【English Translation】 English version Āṭavaka, the Great Yaksha General, Supreme Dhāraṇī Scripture Spoken by the Buddha

Āṭavaka, the Great Yaksha General, Supreme Dhāraṇī Scripture Spoken by the Buddha

Translator unknown, attributed to the Liang Dynasty Record

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rājagṛha (王舍城). At that time, there was a bhikkhu (比丘) in Rājagṛha who was robbed by thieves, bitten by a snake, and harassed by ghosts, suffering great distress.

At that time, the great Yaksha (夜叉) general Āṭavaka (阿吒婆拘), seeing this bhikkhu suffering such distress, felt compassion. He then went to the Buddha's place, and upon arriving, prostrated himself at the Buddha's feet and stood to one side. He said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, in order to subdue all extremely evil ghosts and spirits, I now have compassion for all sentient beings. For the sake of subduing all evil ghosts and spirits, as well as all evil people and poisons, I offer to the Buddha, the World Honored One, an extremely severe evil mantra to subdue these ghosts and spirits. If there is anyone who recites this mantra, their power and virtue will be able to subdue even Brahmā (梵天), let alone other evils.'

At that time, the Buddha said to the great Yaksha general Āṭavaka: 'I do not need this extremely severe evil mantra, lest it harm sentient beings.'

At that time, Āṭavaka again said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, in the evil age of the future, evil ghosts will increase, evil people will be numerous, and poisonous insects and beasts will harm sentient beings. Or they may encounter various calamities, such as the dangers of kings, thieves, water, fire, and weapons, as well as fear, hatred, evil ghosts, and other difficulties. If the Buddha's disciples, whether ordained or lay, whether living in quiet places, mendicant practitioners, in graveyards, under trees, or among the four assemblies, if they are traveling in wilderness, mountain forests, or in the streets and alleys of towns and villages, I should protect them and prevent them from encountering evil. World Honored One, with compassion, I hope you will accept my request. Sugata (善逝), World Honored One, I hope you will consider and record it.'

At that time, the World Honored One, having heard these words, silently accepted. At that time, Āṭavaka, seeing that the Buddha had silently agreed, was filled with joy and recited this mantra before the Buddha:

【English Translation】 English version May there be peace and tranquility. May it cause departure from decay and affliction, extinguishing all evil poisons. May it bring freedom from all suffering and affliction, from the dangers of kings, thieves, and enemies. If any are afflicted or harmed by heavenly dragons, ghosts, spirits, Rākṣasas (evil spirits), Yakṣas (guardian deities or malevolent spirits), Kumbhāṇḍas (pot-shaped demons), Pūtanās (foul-smelling hungry ghosts), Apasmāras (epilepsy demons), Skandas (hindrance deities), and the like, may all such afflictions and harms be eliminated and extinguished. Furthermore, may all poisons in the world, whether from fragrant grasses, the roots, flowers, or fruits of trees, or from clothing, food, or other worldly things, and from insects, birds, fowl, and beasts that can cause poisonous harm to people, be dissipated and destroyed, unable to do evil. Moreover, may the sun, moon, and stars in the sky, whirlwinds, wind wheels, and winds raised by ghosts and spirits, intending to harm people, or various ghosts and spirits seeking food, sucking people's vital essence, eating people's flesh and blood, causing epidemics, fevers, whether for one, two, three, four, up to seven days, or causing cold diseases, wind diseases, damp diseases, cold and other illnesses, whether internal or external, all diseases, whether for seven or sixteen days, be extinguished, unable to cause harm. If these ghosts and spirits, with their hands, mouths, feet, tongues, or minds, intend to afflict people, and if evil people intend to do evil and harm others, first, one should recite this mantra, the power of which can restrain them, causing those evil people and evil ghosts to be silenced, shattered, and lose their minds, unable to do evil. World Honored One, I will now further speak a divine mantra to protect them.

ā-che ā-che, muni muni, mahā-muni muni, ni xiu xiu, mahā-nāga xiu xiu, dou-qie-na-zhi a-hu a-qie-na-zhi a-duo-na-zhi, a-zha a-zha, na-zha na-zha, liu-dou, liu-dou, liu-dou, xiu-xiu-dou-liu, xi-ni xi-ni xi-ni xi-ni, yu-qiu-mo-qiu-mo, qiu-mo, qiu-mo, xi-li xi-li xi-li, xi-li, ni-li, ni-li, mahā-ni-li suō-hē.

This Dhāraṇī is for the protection of those who receive, uphold, and recite it. If there are ghosts who eat people's vital essence, or damage people's assets, or deplete people's wealth, all such terrors and resentments are hereby bound by this boundary. Now, for the family of so-and-so in such-and-such country, immeasurable great protection is made. Now, I shall again speak a mantra to defend against all evils, that is, the mantra says:

At that time, the Great General spoke to the Buddha again, 'World Honored One, this mantra possesses extremely great spiritual power, as described above. Do not let those who hold this mantra have fear of kings, fear of thieves, fear of fire, fear of water, fear of wind, fear of poison, fear of weapons, and so on. And fear of the sun, moon, stars, ghosts, and spirits. Or if other evil acquaintances harbor resentment and evil intentions, wanting to harass and harm the mantra holder, one should first recite this mantra to create a boundary for them. One should cause those evil ghosts, evil people, and enemies who harbor evil intentions of aggression to become foolish, confused, silenced, and shattered, and to encounter various evil retributions themselves. They cannot cross this boundary and cannot harm those who recite this mantra. World Honored One, if there are good men and good women who recite this mantra, all the dragons, nagas, asuras, and various evil ghosts, spirits, humans, and non-humans will attend and protect them, preventing them from encountering evil. World Honored One, I am a great general of ghosts and spirits, with the power to subdue all evil ghosts. If someone recites this mantra, I shall lead the ghosts and spirits to protect this person day and night, without leaving, so that they do not see evil and so that evil ghosts and evil people cannot take advantage of them. If anyone infringes upon, harms, or harasses those who recite this mantra, I shall crush their heads with a thousand-spoked wheel and cause the ghosts and spirits to bring about decline and harm. World Honored One, this mantra possesses extremely great spiritual power and extremely great majesty. May it be widely disseminated to bestow peace and happiness upon the masses. World Honored One, the merit and power of those who recite this mantra are known only to the Buddha. World Honored One, this great divine mantra should be entrusted to virtuous, wise, and good people. If they cannot recite it, they should write it down on good paper, place it in a colored pouch, add various fragrances, and always carry it with them. If there is worry, fear, or danger, they should always remember this mantra, and there is nothing that cannot be eliminated.'

【English Translation】 English version: World Honored One, if someone encounters difficulties, worries, fears, evil spirits, or nightmares, and wishes to eliminate these calamities, they should first establish a boundary to prevent all evils from arising, causing those wicked people, evil spirits, and evil thieves to suffer the consequences of their actions, their bodies withered and their minds deranged. When establishing the boundary, one should first purify themselves with a bath, wear clean clothes, and clean the ground. Prepare seven vessels filled with beverages, two vessels with beverages containing a small amount of blood, and two vessels with various beverages, light eight lamps, burn frankincense, and make offerings with a sincere heart. I will lead the various spirits to his side and grant them what they desire. This person should recite this mantra, tie a red thread into knots, and then carry it with them, which will eliminate all calamities.

At that time, the Buddha told Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha): 'This mantra possesses immense divine power, capable of eliminating all calamities and unfavorable times, protecting sentient beings, and bringing many benefits. You should receive and uphold it well, and spread it widely. If towns and villages recite this mantra, none will fail to receive benefits. If kings and ministers recite this mantra, then their country will be free from the invasion of evil thieves, without fear or calamity, without unexpected disasters, diseases, plagues, floods, droughts, gales, or frosts. If encountering evil thieves, one should recite this mantra. If this mantra is tied to a tall flagpole, the thieves, upon seeing the flagpole, will immediately retreat and surrender. Ananda, this mantra possesses immense divine power and great merit; it should be taught to the fourfold assembly to recite and uphold well.' At that time, the assembly, upon hearing what the Buddha said, joyfully accepted and practiced it.

(Here, the Dan version has a note saying: Use cow dung to make the site, surround it with ashes, erect two knives and twelve arrows. Invite Atavaka, the rest as before. Recite three times, tie twelve knots in the red thread).
