Thus have I heard. At one time, the World Honored One was on Mount Mahāmati-linna, expounding the Dharma in a great jeweled pavilion. At that time, all the Buddhas were praising and extolling Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva-mahāsattva. Thereupon, they all gathered and sat in the assembly. Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva sat on the eastern side of the World Honored One's universally radiant lotus throne. The Buddha comforted sentient beings with his right hand. Next to the Buddha on the right was the four-armed Great Power Vidyaraja, who bowed to the Buddha with his left hand, held a whisk in his right hand, a vajra lasso in his upper left hand, and a vajra club in his upper right hand. His eyes were like vermilion, and his hair was like blazing fire, soaring upwards. Next were Vajrapāṇi and his retinue. Then, on the right was Trailokyavijaya, and on the left was Amritakundalin, shaped like a half-moon, swift and fierce, with a terrifying appearance, red like vermilion. This great terrifying vajra is capable of destroying all afflictions and the firmly held original mind. Next were the holy Trailokyavijaya, holy Mamaki, Amritakundalin, vajra hook, and vajra lasso. Within their gate were two wrathful vajras, holding a vajra hammer in their left hands and a vajra club in their right hands. Next to the Buddha on the left was Avalokiteśvara and his retinue. Then, to the right of the Buddha was the holy White-Robed Avalokiteśvara, as well as Tara and Bhrikuti. On the left was Hayagriva. Next were Mahasita and Mahasri, and so on, hundreds of thousands of Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas. Furthermore, there were the Sun and Moon Devas of the East, Dhritarashtra, and Indra. Thus, this bright mantra should be used to place the mighty Vidyaraja (Wisdom King) in the Mandala. Then, contemplate and secretly perform protection. Next, take refuge and prostrate to all the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, Pratyekabuddha (Solitary Buddha), Elder Shariputra (the foremost disciple in wisdom of the Buddha), Shravaka (Hearer) assembly, etc. Take refuge in the Great Muni (Great Sage), Maitreya (the future Buddha) and all the great Bodhisattvas. Prostrate to the Samyak-sambuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One). Take refuge in Vajrapani (Vajra-bearing Bodhisattva) and all his retinue. Again, the mantra is spoken:

此明王常以威德密為護持。一切所作悉皆成就。爾時釋迦如來應正等覺。即於是時普放焰鬘清凈光明。遍照三千大千世界。燒諸魔王一切宮殿。熾焰周匝為一火聚燒蕩無餘。是時魔王以自業力而不肯伏。是諸魔王及諸魔眾。轉生毒害各各忿怒。手持利劍弓箭刀輪種種器仗。時金剛手秘密主如佛所現。過於東方二十一恒河沙等世界。一切魔王悉盡降伏。身赤眼碧四牙外出。顰眉努目發豎如朱。有大威德右手持棒。左手持金剛。龍為莊嚴虎皮為衣。如是南西北方。亦復二十一恒河沙等世界。皆悉現身而降伏之。爾時無數俱胝那庾多百千萬毒害魔王。為塢粗瑟么(二合)大力明王攝伏。恐怖戰慄心慌迷悶。四肢無力無所覺知。身命不顧魔王自業五種繫縛。時金剛手秘密主作是事已。即時夜魔天眾兜率天化樂天他化自在天眾。各持種種涂香燒香。及眾妙華幢幡繒蓋往。詣釋迦如來之所供養。右繞佛已退坐一面。是時金剛手菩薩。為諸如來稱揚讚歎已。如來大智于最勝大教法中。演出一切所求隨意自在無量威德勇猛大力真言。為欲利益安樂天上人間一切眾生。即說咒曰。

【English Translation】 English version: Tora-ya Maha-tejaya Svaha Om Hum Phat Svaha
This Bright King constantly and secretly protects with his majestic virtue. Everything done will be accomplished. At that time, Shakyamuni Tathagata, the Perfectly Enlightened One, then emitted flames of pure light, illuminating the three thousand great thousand worlds, burning all the palaces of the demon kings. The blazing flames formed a fiery mass, burning away everything without remainder. At this time, the demon kings, due to their own karmic power, refused to submit. These demon kings and their retinues transformed into poisonous beings, each filled with rage, wielding sharp swords, bows and arrows, bladed wheels, and various weapons. Then, Vajrapani (the secret lord), manifested as the Buddha, surpassing twenty-one Ganges-sand-count worlds to the east, completely subduing all the demon kings. His body was red, his eyes were blue, four fangs protruded outwards, his brow was furrowed, his eyes glared, and his hair stood on end like vermilion. He possessed great majestic power, holding a staff in his right hand and a vajra (diamond scepter) in his left. Dragons adorned him, and he wore a tiger skin as clothing. Similarly, in the south, west, and north, surpassing twenty-one Ganges-sand-count worlds, he manifested his form and subdued them all. At that time, countless kotis (ten millions) nayutas (hundred millions) hundreds of thousands of poisonous demon kings were subdued by Ucchusma (the Great Power Bright King), terrified, trembling, panicked, and bewildered, their limbs powerless, unaware of anything, disregarding their lives, the demon kings bound by five kinds of their own karma. After Vajrapani (the secret lord) had done these things, the Yama Heaven hosts, the Tushita Heaven, the Nirmanarati Heaven, and the Paranirmita-vasavartin Heaven hosts, each holding various scented ointments, burning incense, and various wonderful flowers, banners, and canopies, went to the place of Shakyamuni Tathagata to make offerings, circumambulating the Buddha to the right and then retiring to sit on one side. Then, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, after praising and extolling the Tathagatas, the Tathagata, with great wisdom, from within the supreme great Dharma, revealed the all-fulfilling, freely-wielding, immeasurable majestic power, courageous and mighty great dharani (mantra), for the sake of benefiting and bringing peace and happiness to all sentient beings in the heavens and on earth, then spoke the mantra:

是時金剛手菩薩摩訶薩。白佛言世尊。若有善男子善女人。聞此正法受持讀誦廣為他說。慇勤精進尊重供養。彼得一切曼拏攞中灌頂得此真言。即能攝伏破壞一切咒術。爾時金剛手秘密主。復白佛言世尊。佛說此大力明王心陀羅尼。若有人受持。即得彼藥叉藥叉眾。洛乞叉(二合)蘇(引)洛 乞叉(二合)蘇眾。禁𥌊拏禁𥌊拏眾。誐嚕拏誐嚕拏眾。各發誓願而為護持。復有龍王乾闥婆。畢舍遮塢納么(二合)那。拏枳寧。薩𠆙(切身)薩奚攞。俱波三么(二合)啰。羯吒布怛曩。味怛拏。如是等一切惡名恐怖之眾。及諸眷屬不能為害。爾時世尊贊金剛手菩薩秘密主言。善哉善哉汝以大悲。為諸眾生廣興佛事。時金剛手秘密主白佛言。世尊若有受持讀誦此經典者。憶持不忘廣為他說。彼人即得遠離輪迴見者歡喜供養禮拜。時金剛手復說無量勇猛力真。言即說咒曰。

這時,金剛手菩薩摩訶薩(Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva)對佛說:『世尊,如果有善男子、善女人,聽聞此正法,受持讀誦,廣為他人宣說,慇勤精進,尊重供養,他們就能在一切曼拏攞(Mandala,壇城)中得到灌頂,得到這個真言,就能攝伏、破壞一切咒術。』
這時,金剛手秘密主(Vajrapani, the Lord of Secrets)又對佛說:『世尊,佛所說的大力明王心陀羅尼(Mahabala-vajra-vidyaraja-hrdaya-dharani),如果有人受持,就能得到藥叉(Yaksa,夜叉)、藥叉眾(Yaksa hosts)、洛乞叉(二合)蘇(引)洛乞叉(二合)蘇眾、禁𥌊拏(Kinnara,緊那羅)禁𥌊拏眾、誐嚕拏(Garuda,迦樓羅)誐嚕拏眾,各自發誓願來護持。』
『還有龍王(Naga-raja)、乾闥婆(Gandharva)、畢舍遮(Pisaca,毗舍遮)、塢納么(二合)那、拏枳寧、薩𠆙(切身)薩奚攞、俱波三么(二合)啰、羯吒布怛曩、味怛拏,像這樣的一切惡名恐怖之眾,以及他們的眷屬,都不能加害。』
這時,世尊讚歎金剛手菩薩秘密主說:『善哉善哉!你以大悲心,為諸眾生廣興佛事。』
這時,金剛手秘密主對佛說:『世尊,如果有人受持讀誦此經典,憶持不忘,廣為他人宣說,這個人就能遠離輪迴,見到的人都歡喜供養禮拜。』
這時,金剛手又說了無量勇猛力真言,即說咒曰:
『唵(引)吽(引)吽(引)吽(引)吽(引)𠷑𠷑𠷑𠷑屋 訖啰(二合)輸攞播(引)抳吽(引)吽(引)吽(引)吽(引)𠷑𠷑𠷑𠷑 唵(引)蘇濟(二合引。』
【English Translation】 English version 『Tadyatha Om Hara Mala Hana Daha Paca Matha Vikara Vidhvamsaya Jati Jala Mauna Nara Ustsma Krodha Hum Phat Svaha.』
At that time, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if there are good men and good women who hear this Dharma, receive, uphold, read, and recite it, widely explain it to others, diligently strive, respect, and make offerings, they will receive empowerment in all Mandalas and obtain this mantra, which can subdue and destroy all spells.'
At that time, Vajrapani, the Lord of Secrets, further said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if someone upholds the Mahabala-vajra-vidyaraja-hrdaya-dharani (the Great Mighty Vidyaraja Heart Dharani) spoken by the Buddha, they will obtain the Yakshas, the Yaksha hosts, the Rakshasa, the Rakshasa hosts, the Kinnaras, the Kinnara hosts, the Garudas, the Garuda hosts, each making vows to protect them.'
'Furthermore, the Naga-rajas (Dragon Kings), Gandharvas, Pisacas, Udanas, Dakinis, Sakas, Sakilas, Kumbhandas, Kataputanas, Vetalas, and all such hosts of evil names and terrors, along with their retinues, will be unable to harm them.'
At that time, the World Honored One praised Vajrapani Bodhisattva, the Lord of Secrets, saying: 'Excellent, excellent! With great compassion, you are widely promoting the Buddha's work for all beings.'
At that time, Vajrapani, the Lord of Secrets, said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if someone receives, upholds, reads, and recites this scripture, remembers it without forgetting, and widely explains it to others, that person will be able to stay away from samsara, and those who see him will rejoice, make offerings, and prostrate in worship.'
At that time, Vajrapani again spoke the mantra of immeasurable courageous power, that is, he spoke the mantra:

These sixty-two Vajra-holders secretly protect at all times. If anyone receives, upholds, reads, or recites this Dharani, even heavenly fire can be subdued by them. The dead can be revived, and enemies and demons can be defeated. Desired offspring can also be obtained. One can choose a piece of land, and with a handful of water, blessed with the Dharani mantra, one can dissolve all poisons from snakes, scorpions, and the like. Pregnant women can obtain peace and be free from all suffering. All undertakings will be accomplished, and all mantras will also be accomplished. If one can receive and uphold this Sutra, one will obtain great joy. At that time, Iśāna (自在天, the Lord of Freedom) Bhūtapati (鬼主, Lord of Ghosts) was surrounded by countless kotis (千萬, tens of millions) of heavenly beings. These beings arose in the maṇḍala (壇城, sacred circle) and prostrated at the feet of Vajrapani Bodhisattva. They said to Vajrapani Bodhisattva: 'O Holy One, please now expound for us this Dharani of Great Power, Unfailing Accomplishment, and Immeasurable Courageous Strength, which we deeply love.' Even Brahma, Indra, Asuras respectfully prostrate. Yakṣas (夜叉, nature spirits), rākṣasas (羅剎, demons), vetālas (毗陀羅, vampires), katapūtanas (羯吒布單那, a type of demon), and ūnamas (烏摩, a type of demon) are terrified. They are either beaten or killed, subduing those beings. The keys and locks of doors will fall and be destroyed without remainder. This Mandala King can accomplish all kinds of deeds. At that time, those beings praised Bhūtapati, saying: 'Excellent! Excellent! Bhūtapati, you are able to ask the Tathagata and the Vajra-holder on behalf of all beings.' Then, the World Honored One Vajrapani hurled the Vajra-pestle Free Wheel. At that time, that Vajra quickly descended and resided within the Vajra Lotus, immediately entering into Yogic contemplation. All the Mandala assembly saw a great wrathful appearance, with a face of awe-inspiring terror and poisonous snakes covering the body. If one wishes to subdue and destroy all the demonic beings in the Mandala, one should enter into this samādhi (三昧, meditative absorption), that is, enter into the Great Compassion Samadhi of all beings, with light and flames shining universally.

This Great Strength Vidyaraja Sutra, even if it is pure or impure, food or non-food, pure precepts or impure precepts, there are no obstacles. At that time, Vajrapani Bodhisattva Mahasattva (great being) said to the World Honored One: 'If anyone upholds this Sutra and explains it to others, they will live to be a hundred years old and be free from all untimely deaths and suffering.' The Buddha said: 'Vajrapani (Diamond Hand), if there are good men or good women who uphold this true Dharma, their various karmic obstacles will be destroyed swiftly like trees on the riverbank. They should make offerings with scented paste, burning incense, various wonderful flowers, and various banners, and they will obtain vast, immeasurable, and boundless store of merit, and be free from all obstacles and difficulties. If in the place where this Sutra is upheld, recited, and explained, those Nagas (dragons), Asuras (demigods), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), and all humans and devas (gods) will constantly protect and make offerings, and all Mara Kings (demon kings) will not dare to disobey. 【English Translation】 English version: If one hears even a single word or phrase, one will immediately attain the irreversible Bodhisattva path. At that time, Vajrapani (Vajrapani, a Dharma protector in Buddhism) said, 'The Dharma of the Tathagata (Tathagata, one of the titles of the Buddha) is extremely great, profound, subtle, immeasurable, inconceivable, and beyond discussion.' At that time, the beings were confused and unable to understand. The Buddha said, 'Vajrapani, this sutra is spoken for all beings, to encourage all beings, to bring peace and happiness to all beings, to increase the benefit of all beings, to enable all beings to receive empowerment, to liberate all beings from poverty, to eliminate all karmic obstacles, to obtain great auspiciousness, and to enable all beings to attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, unsurpassed complete enlightenment).』 At that time, eight thousand Bodhisattvas, having heard these words, circumambulated the Buddha three times, joined their palms in reverence, and praised, saying, 『Excellent! Excellent! Sakyamuni Tathagata (Sakyamuni Tathagata) skillfully expounds this Dharma.』 Those Bodhisattvas, for the sake of the name of Sakyamuni Tathagata, further said, 『So it is! So it is! World Honored One, this is indeed well spoken.』
At that time, the World Honored One said to Vajrapani, 'Lord of Secrets, I speak of this Dharma-gate of great power and virtue, which can subdue all the demon kings and cause their retinues to gather together, so that all obstacles and calamities will no longer arise, and all that is sought will be fulfilled, even to the attainment of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.' At that time, the World Honored One again spoke this Dharani (Dharani, a type of mantra), that is, he spoke the mantra as follows:

Therefore, relying on the power and virtue of this mighty wrathful Vidyaraja, you should constantly protect all sentient beings, bring great joy, pacify calamities, have compassion and benefit them, destroy all evil poisons, and break apart sorcery. For those who have generated the Mahayana mind, for those who expound the wonderful Dharma, ensure that the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha may abide long in the world.' At that time, Manjushri, the Dharma Prince, rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and joined his palms.
掌向佛白佛言。世尊云何佛說一切緣行為無常相。佛告文殊師利。汝今諦聽。一切緣行如乾闥婆城無有實相。如電光如浮雲。如霧如舍宅。風中燭水上漚。芭蕉心如。諸畫相如。空中花如。夢幻影響如。苦樂輪迴如一切瀑河如一切海波如是如是。此一切眾生從緣所生。而不能知不能見。不能思惟不能解了。唯佛能知。如是見如是思惟如是解了。何以故一切緣行即空相故即真實空故畢竟空故即三空故空空。應如是解。何以故即大空故即如來空故。如是如是知。如是見如是思惟如是解了。菩薩摩訶薩得如是相故。佛復告文殊師利法王子言。若菩薩摩訶薩。行檀波羅蜜多羼提波羅蜜多精進波羅蜜多禪波羅蜜多般若波羅蜜多。亦應如是相而解了故。

【English Translation】 English version: Then, Palm-facing Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, why does the Buddha say that all conditioned phenomena are characterized by impermanence?' The Buddha told Mañjuśrī: 'Listen carefully now. All conditioned phenomena are like a Gandharva city (a mirage), without any real substance. They are like lightning, like floating clouds, like mist, like illusory houses, a candle in the wind, a bubble on water, the heart of a banana tree, like painted images, like flowers in the sky, like dreams, illusions, and echoes, the cycle of suffering and happiness, all waterfalls and rivers, all ocean waves—just like that, just like that. All these beings are born from conditions, yet they cannot know, cannot see, cannot contemplate, cannot understand. Only the Buddha can know, can see in this way, can contemplate in this way, can understand in this way.' Why? Because all conditioned phenomena are the nature of emptiness, the nature of true emptiness, ultimately empty, the nature of the three emptinesses, emptiness of emptiness. One should understand it in this way. Why? Because it is the nature of great emptiness, the nature of Tathagata emptiness. One should know in this way, see in this way, contemplate in this way, understand in this way. Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas attain such an understanding. The Buddha further told Mañjuśrī, the Dharma Prince: 'If a Bodhisattva-mahāsattva practices Dāna-pāramitā (Perfection of Giving), Kṣānti-pāramitā (Perfection of Patience), Vīrya-pāramitā (Perfection of Diligence), Dhyāna-pāramitā (Perfection of Meditation), and Prajñā-pāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom), they should also understand them with such an understanding.' At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-mahāsattva said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, why is this sutra named 'Emergence of the Tathagata's Form'?' The Buddha told Avalokiteśvara: 'If this sutra is widely used to perform Buddha's work after the Tathagata's Parinirvana, therefore this sutra is named 'Emergence of the Tathagata's Form'. If this sutra becomes extinct, the Buddha-dharma will also become extinct, hence it is also named 'Emergence of the Tathagata's Form'. If this sutra abides, the Buddha-dharma also abides, therefore it is named 'Emergence of the Tathagata's Form'.' Why? Because all Bodhisattvas constantly serve and revere this sutra. For this reason, it is named 'Emergence of the Tathagata's Form'. At that time, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva-mahāsattva again said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if anyone upholds, recites, and explains this sutra to others, I will come to protect them.' The Buddha said: 'The majestic power of this sutra can cause all Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas and all devas and humans to gather together.' These Bodhisattvas simultaneously praised: 'Excellent, excellent, World Honored One! We are delighted to hear it; please explain it to us.' At that time, Vajra Guhyapati (another name for Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, meaning 'Lord of Secrets') addressed the Buddha, saying: 'World Honored One, why is this scripture named the Ādi-dharmadhātusvabhāva (Primordial Nature of the Dharmadhātu)?' The Buddha said: 'Good son, listen carefully. This scripture was spoken by all the Tathāgatas (Thus Come Ones) thirty-two days after their enlightenment, while sitting on Mount Mahāmucilinda (a mountain's name) and entering the Mahābala-samādhi (Great Power Samadhi), hence it is named the Ādi-dharmadhātusvabhāva. This scripture enables all sentient beings to abide in the bodhimārga (path to enlightenment) as soon as they generate bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment), hence it is named the Ādi-dharmadhātusvabhāva. The tejas (power) of this scripture enables countless Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (Great Bodhisattvas) to attain all abhimukha-samādhis (present samadhis), hence it is named the Ādi-dharmadhātusvabhāva. Moreover, the tejas of this scripture enables countless sentient beings to attain the Śrāvakayāna (Vehicle of Hearers), hence it is named the Ādi-dharmadhātusvabhāva. Vajrapāṇi (Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva), if anyone upholds, recites, and explains this scripture to others, all the Tathāgatas will regard them as their only child, enabling them to be far from saṃsāra (the cycle of rebirth) and to reach the nirvāṇamārga (path to nirvana) after their life ends.'
Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva said: 'The mahākaruṇā (great compassion) of all the Buddhas (Enlightened Ones) constantly saves all sentient beings, enabling them to escape from saṃsāra and be free from all suffering. They constantly speak the mahāprajñā-dharma (great wisdom-dharma) of Muni (an epithet of Shakyamuni Buddha), cleansing the kleśa (afflictions) and defiled seeds of sentient beings.' The Buddha said: 'Excellent, excellent, Guhyapati! If anyone upholds, recites, explains to others, makes offerings to, and reveres this scripture, personally writes it or has others write it, carefully observes, contemplates, and constantly remembers it, that person will attain koṭis (ten millions) of samadhis, and will see koṭis of Tathāgatas, as well as all the Bodhisattvas and their retinues. They should make vast offerings, with respect and reverence, offering clothing, bedding, food, medicine, and all necessities, thereby attaining great peace and happiness. The good roots planted by this good son will enable them to attain anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (unexcelled perfect enlightenment), all because they have heard the wonderful dharma spoken by those Tathāgata-arhat-samyaksaṃbuddhas (Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Ones), remembering it without forgetting. And because they have obtained the power of Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, this Mahābala-tejas-krodharāja (King of Wrath with Great Power and Majesty) constantly protects, accomplishes, and brings peace and happiness to all sentient beings.'
At that time, after the Bhagavan (Blessed One) finished speaking this scripture, Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Mañjuśrī (Manjushri Bodhisattva), Vajragarbha (Vajragarbha Bodhisattva), and all the compassionate and wise Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, Venerable Subhūti (Subhuti), all the mahāśrāvakas (great disciples), and all sentient beings, all the deva-manuṣyas (gods and humans) of the world, nāgarājas (dragon kings), asuras (demigods), gandharvas (celestial musicians), and others who had come together from the ten directions.
