【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Vaishravana, the Heavenly King, Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Dharma Heaven, Minister of the Honglu Temple and Great Master of Spreading Teachings, under Imperial Order, from the Tripitaka of the Western Regions

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of the Anathapindika Garden in Shravasti. At that time, Vaishravana (the Heavenly King of the North), together with hundreds of thousands of countless Yakshas (a type of guardian spirit) and their retinues, came to the Buddha's place during the first watch of the night. They emitted great light, illuminating all the boundaries of Jetavana. Vaishravana prostrated himself with his five limbs to the ground, paying homage to the World Honored One's feet. He then stood to one side, joined his palms, and praised the Buddha with a verse:

'I take refuge in the Great Fearless One, The Perfectly Awakened Two-Footed Honored One. The devas (gods) observe with their divine eyes, Yet cannot fully perceive you. Buddhas of the past, present, and future, Compassionate lords of the three times. Each and every one is Perfectly and Universally Knowing, I now take refuge and pay homage to you.'

At that time, after Vaishravana spoke this verse, he said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, there are Shravakas (listeners of the Dharma), Bhikshus (Buddhist monks), Bhikshunis (Buddhist nuns), Upasakas (male lay practitioners), and Upasikas (female lay practitioners) who walk, sit, or lie down in the wilderness, forests, or under trees. Among these Yakshas and non-humans (non-human beings) under my command, some believe in the Buddha's teachings, while others believe only a little. There are also countless evil Yakshas who do not believe in the Buddha's teachings, disturbing sentient beings and causing them unrest.'

'Excellent, World Honored One, how wonderful it would be if the Atanatiya Sutra (a protective scripture) could serve as a bright protector! If there are Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas, Upasikas, and devas who uphold, recite, revere, make offerings to, and widely proclaim it to others, they will all be protected and receive auspiciousness.' At that time, there were many Yakshas with right faith in the assembly, who joined their palms and said: 'We beseech the Heavenly King to speak this sutra, as we are eager to hear it.' At that time, Vaishravana silently accepted the request, and immediately prostrated himself before the Buddha, touching his head to the ground in reverence. Receiving the Buddha's majestic power, he told the Yakshas: 'Now, if this sutra can be obtained, proclaimed, and circulated, it can remove all the afflictions of sentient beings. Therefore, I now take refuge and pay homage.'

In the Eastern World, there is a lord of the Gandharvas (celestial musicians) named Dhritarashtra (Upholder of the Nation, Guardian of the East), who possesses great power and virtue, and whose body emits light, like the sun rising and illuminating the world.

English version: Practicing to attain supreme tranquility.

Furthermore, in the northern world, people live for a thousand years without premature death. The land requires no cultivation, and people do not engage in labor. Food and drink arise naturally, possessing all delightful colors, fragrances, and flavors, nourishing the various organs of the body, making it radiant and smooth. Everywhere there are flowers, fruit trees, flowing springs, and ponds, where people can play and enjoy themselves as if experiencing heavenly bliss. Just as Dhṛtarāṣṭra protects the east, Virūḍhaka protects the south, Virūpākṣa protects the west, and Vaiśravaṇa protects the north, each with their power and virtue, guarding the four great continents.

Furthermore, the Gandharva lord has Yakṣa female retinues, some riding elephants, some riding horses, some riding camels, some riding water buffaloes, some riding sheep, some riding snakes, some riding flying birds, some riding young boys, and some riding young girls. They lead with elephants in front, secretly going to various directions in the empty sky, able to perform various transformations, freely and unrestrictedly, and also able to protect people, making themselves invisible. If those Yakṣas have ugly appearances and various forms, they also move freely in the empty sky like flying birds, secretly protecting people. Their names are Āṭānāṭa, Kunāṭa, Parikusanāṭa, Naṇanaṇa, Purika, and so on, as well as the Yakṣa female retinues. They all dwell in the great city of Āṇakavatī in the north. Moreover, in this great city, there is a palace, and on its four sides, there are ninety-nine ponds, with very deep and wide water, called Earth Ponds. The springs flow continuously and can also bring rain. There are also various kinds of flowers and fruit trees, such as Kuṅkubhāka, Kurarāraka, Ma-hua, and so on. The fruits are sweet and delicious, loved by all. Kalaviṅka birds, peacocks, and various other birds constantly emit wonderful sounds. There is a Deva (god) there named Brave, along with his retinue, who also dwells in the palace, guarding the borders of the country. At that time, Vaiśravaṇa, relying on the compassionate power of the Buddha, sequentially proclaimed the true mantra, saying:

Tad-ya-tha i-li mi-li i-li kim-ṭa mu-li hi-li kim-ci mu-li ha-na mi hu-nu ri-nu mi kyo-ri gan-dha-ri gu-nu hi-ni u-ji hu-ji sva-ha

At that time, Vaiśravaṇa, having spoken the true mantra, said to the Buddha, 'World-Honored One, there are also great Gandharva retinues.'

After Vaiśravaṇa (Vaiśravaṇa, one of the Four Heavenly Kings, guardian of the North) had spoken this Āṭānāṭiya Sūtra (Āṭānāṭiya Sūtra), he bowed at the feet of the World Honored One and stood to one side.

At that time, Śākyamuni Buddha (Śākyamuni Buddha) told the assembly of Bhikṣus (Bhikṣu, ordained monks) in the middle of the night: 'This sutra has great power and can be a bright protector.' That Vaiśravaṇa (Vaiśravaṇa) Heavenly King, with countless hundreds of thousands of Yaksa (Yaksa, night spirit) retinues, emitted great light, illuminating all the boundaries of Jetavana (Jetavana, Jeta Grove), and spoke this gatha:

I take refuge in the Great Fearless One, the Perfectly Enlightened, Two-Footed Honored One, The devas with their heavenly eyes, see me and find nothing to fear, The Buddhas of the past and future, the compassionate lords of the three times, Each one perfectly and completely enlightened, I now take refuge and pay homage.

After speaking this verse, he reported to the Buddha: 'If there are Śrāvakas (Śrāvaka, hearers of the Dharma), Bhikṣus (Bhikṣu, ordained monks), Bhikṣuṇīs (Bhikṣuṇī, ordained nuns), Upāsakas (Upāsaka, lay male followers), Upāsikās (Upāsikā, lay female followers) who walk, sit, or lie down in the wilderness, forests, or under trees, there are various kinds of Yakshas (Yaksa, night spirit) and non-human beings, some who believe in the Buddha's words, some who believe a little, and some who are extremely evil and do not believe, they disturb sentient beings, causing them to be uneasy.' To benefit and bring happiness to sentient beings, please speak this sutra. You Bhikṣus (Bhikṣu, ordained monks), listen carefully, listen carefully. This sutra truly has great power and can be a refuge, even devas and humans can always receive secret protection. You should uphold it and widely proclaim and spread it.'
