The Ritual of the Mahā-vaiśravaṇa-ya-deva-harā-rāja-dhāraṇī (One Scroll)
Translated by Prajñācakra
Chapter 1: Painting the Image
If there are good men or good women who uphold this dhāraṇī, they must first paint an image. When painting the image, no hide glue should be used in the colors, only fragrant juice. On the first day of the white month, invite a craftsman to cleanse his body, bathe, observe a fast, and receive the eight precepts. When entering or leaving, he must wear three sets of clothes. If he goes to the toilet, he must bathe with fragrant water. Do not be concerned about the skill of his hands. Then take fine white cotton cloth, or if there is no white cotton cloth, fine silk will also do. Take one丈 five chi (approximately 5 meters), and paint the Heavenly King. The Heavenly King wears armor adorned with seven treasures and vajra. His left hand holds a trident, and his right hand rests on his hip (another version says his left hand holds a pagoda). Under his feet, he treads on three Yaksha (夜叉) ghosts. The one in the center is called the Earthly Deity, also known as the Joyful Deity. The one on the left is called Nilamba (尼藍婆), and the one on the right is called Vilamba (毗藍婆). The Heavenly King's face should be painted as fearsome, with a fierce appearance and wide-open angry eyes. On his right side, paint five princes and the retinues of the two classes of Yakshas (夜叉) and Rakshasas (羅剎). On the left side, paint five celestial maidens who practice the Way, as well as his wives and other retinue. The details are as described in the great sutra.
Chapter 2: Constructing the Altar
If you wish to construct an altar, begin on the first day of the white month. Eight肘 (approximately 4 meters), or six肘 eight寸 (approximately 3.3 meters), this is a square altar. Choose a good location and dig one丈 (approximately 3.3 meters) deep, removing bones, tiles, stones, and other inauspicious objects. Take clean soil from another place and firmly tamp it down until it is level. After it is dry, take fine yellow soil, sift it, and mix it with white sandalwood powder to plaster the altar surface. Scrape it until it is as smooth as a mirror, then take rice flour and dye it five colors. Draw three layers of courtyards on the altar. In the very center, draw a vajra flame wheel, or another version says draw a fire pearl with flames rising upwards, and at each of the four corners draw a cruciform vajra (拔折羅). 【English Translation】 Lianhua (Padma, referring to the Bodhisattvas of the Lotus family). Draw a large conch shell on the northwest side. In the third courtyard, draw the Lion King on the east side, the Dragon King on the south side, the Peacock King on the west side, and the Yaksha King (Yaksa, a type of guardian deity) holding a staff on the north side. In addition, place a fragrant water bottle at each of the four corners of the altar, with various light fruits and flower leaves etc. placed in the mouths of the bottles. Then, the mantra master bathes and puts on clean new clothes, and sets up various fragrant flowers, incense and food offerings before the image of the Heavenly King. After the offering is completed, chant the mantra over one hundred and eight Haritaki fruits (a type of medicinal herb), burning one in the fire after each recitation, until all one hundred and eight are burned. In this way, one will receive a gold ingot every day, providing the mantra master with everything they need. If gold is obtained, it should all be used on the same day to make offerings to the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) and to poor children, without generating any stinginess.
Chapter Three: Establishing Boundaries
If you wish to establish boundaries, first recite the name of Mahavairocana Buddha (Mahavairocana, the Great Sun Buddha) one hundred times, and then begin the boundary establishment. That is, make a great vow, saying: 'I, so-and-so, with the five Yakshas (Yaksa, a type of guardian deity) on my head and the Rakshasas (Rakshasa, a type of demon) under my feet, rely on all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas throughout the entire space and dharma realm, the Vajra Secret Traces Strong Men, all the good Divine Kings, the Heavenly Divine Kings, the Earthly Divine Kings, the Mountain, Forest, River, Sea, Sun, Moon, Five Planets, Twenty-eight Constellations, Yama Dharma King, the Five Paths Generals, Mount Tai Prefect, the Directors of Destiny and Records, the Enemies, Debtors, Underworld Officials, Karma Path, Disease-Spreading Ghost Kings, Vishvakarman Deva (Vishvakarman, the celestial architect), the Five Direction Yaksha Great Generals, the Three Heavenly Youths, the Seven Stars, Seven Mansions, Sun and Moon Devas, Nanda (Nanda, the Joyful Dragon King), Upananda (Upananda, the Virtuous Joyful Dragon King), Vasuki (Vasuki, the nine-headed Dragon King), and all the other Great Dragon Kings, please all be witnesses. 【English Translation】 English version The White Emperor of the West (deity governing the West), the Black Emperor of the North (deity governing the North), the Yellow Emperor of the Center (deity governing the Center), and so on. Their body lengths are the same as the Green Emperor (deity governing the East), and their exhaled breath corresponds to their respective directions. When exhaling, they also invite their retinues.
Chapter Four: Hand Seals
First Mudra: Yaksha Standing Posture
Extend the right leg straight and place the left foot on the ground, separated by about one elbow's length. Straighten three fingers of the left hand, press the thumb on the nail of the little finger, and support the waist. The three fingers point forward. With the five fingers of the right hand, place them on the face, making an angry expression. To create a boundary, circle the altar clockwise once, reciting the mantra once per rotation, which is as follows:

Second Mudra: Calling Rakshasa Body Posture
Join both hands in prayer. Hook the two little fingers together. Bring the two thumbs together and join the wrists. Move the index fingers back and forth.
Third Mudra: Yaksha Hook
Following the previous body posture, place the index finger of the right hand on the third joint of the middle finger, rotating clockwise above the heart. All Yakshas (guardian deities) and their retinues will be delighted and will constantly protect the mantra master.
Fourth Mudra: Yaksha Fire Wheel
The middle finger of the left hand supports the index finger of the right hand, and the middle finger of the right hand supports the index finger of the left hand. Bend the two ring fingers into the palms, with the two joints back to back. The two thumbs and two little fingers are straight and touching at the tips. Recite the Great Heart Mantra.
Fifth Mudra: Yaksha Body
The three Yakshas (three types of Yakshas) can cure all diseases caused by ghosts. This body posture should be followed. It is the same as the Kundali (a Wisdom King) Standing Posture. Bend the thumbs of both hands into the palms, and press the ring fingers onto the nails of the thumbs. The index, middle, and little fingers are straight and touching at the tips. Extend the elbows five inches away from the body and recite the Great Body Mantra.
Sixth Mudra: Great Joy King
Quickly grasp the left hand with the right hand, forming a club shape. Then recite the mantra, which is as follows:
Na (上) Mo Kili Kili (一) Kuma Li (二) Xiu Liu Cha Liu Svaha
If there is an urgent official matter or when a superior is angry, reciting this mantra seventeen times will bring great joy.

誦唸此咒七遍之後,接著誦唸根本咒。如果誦咒的時候,先應當稱念名號,恭敬禮拜三寶以及薜室啰末那天王(Vaisravana,多聞天王),能夠施予財物,使一切眾生所求的願望都圓滿,全部都能成就,給予他們安樂。
又一個版本說是呼召法。
【English Translation】 English version Chapter 7: Ghost Mudra
Both hands: Extend both thumbs straight up. Bend the left index finger and place it at the base of the left thumb. Slightly bend the right index finger. Bend the lower two segments of both middle fingers. All fingers are bent into the palms.
Chapter 8: Food Mudra
Both hands: Bend both thumbs downwards. Extend both index fingers straight up. Also extend both middle fingers, slightly bent. Bend both ring fingers and both little fingers into the palms.
Chapter 9: Tooth Mudra
Both hands: Extend both thumbs straight up. Extend both middle fingers straight up. Extend the left index finger slightly bent. Bend the right index finger and place it on the left thumb. The tips of both middle fingers are about half an inch apart. Bend both ring fingers and both little fingers into the palms.
Chapter 5: Protection Section
If you wish to protect yourself, also invite the Five Direction Yakshas (Yaksa, a type of guardian deity) and the Mahacakra-vajra (a type of Vajra deity). Then recite the Mahacakra-vajra-dharani (Great Wheel Vajra Dharani) twenty-one times, and also recite the Heavenly King's Body Mantra twenty-one times. It then becomes a protection mantra, which reads:

求使者品第六
夫欲驅使鬼神之時。先須別作一位於壇外。著一盞燈一盆凈水。一束凈草佈於地上已。造油餅四十枚。不著油餅四十九枚。散著草上。呼諸鬼神名字施食。然後可得驅使神鬼也。若欲廣誦諸藏經論者。即呼誦使者。
若欲能論義者。便喚論義使者。

【English Translation】 English version: First, place it on the 㪷柄 (a type of container). Burn benzoin incense in front. The practitioner sits in the center, facing the Dou Gate, wearing black clothes. Recite the mantra seven times, and say the name of the ghost or spirit once. Each time you recite the mantra, say the name of the ghost or spirit once, until forty-nine times. Do this for seven days and seven nights, starting from the fifteenth day of the month until the twenty-ninth day, maintaining purity, bathing, and fasting. Burn benzoin incense on the altar and light seven lamps. Place a basin of clean water outside to perform the ritual. The ghost will then appear, and you can talk to it freely. Each ghost will tell you its abilities. Record their names, ranks, and the requirements for commanding them. Chapter Six: Seeking Messengers
When you want to command ghosts and spirits, you must first set up a separate place outside the altar. Place a lamp, a basin of clean water, and a bundle of clean grass on the ground. Make forty oil cakes, or forty-nine cakes without oil, and scatter them on the grass. Call out the names of the various ghosts and spirits and offer them food. Then you can command the gods and ghosts. If you want to widely recite various Tripitaka scriptures and treatises, then call the scripture-reciting messenger.
If you want to be good at debating doctrines, then call the doctrine-debating messenger.
If you want intelligence and wisdom, then call the intelligent and wise messenger.
If you want to obtain treasures buried in the ground, then call the hidden-treasure messenger.
If you want to enter the mountains to practice meditation and cultivate the art of flying and becoming an immortal, then call the law-attending messenger.
If you want treasures from the dragon palace, then call the dragon-palace messenger.
If you want the art of invisibility, ascending to the heavenly palace, and transformation, then call the invisibility messenger.
If you want the art of forbidding and cursing ghosts and spirits, and the art of stepping on boiling water and forbidding fire, then call the forbidding-and-cursing messenger.

If someone constantly recites this mantra before the image of the Heavenly King, the Four Great Heavenly Kings will always be by their side. Or, in a dream, they may sit and talk with noble people, which means the Heavenly King is blessing the mantra master and protecting this matter. At that time, the mantra master should make a great vow, burn benzoin incense before the image of the Heavenly King, and recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, and all that is requested will be fulfilled.

If one seeks the remembrance of noble people, and all that is requested is fulfilled, then recite this mantra one thousand and eighty times, and in a dream, the Heavenly King's messenger will clearly speak in the mantra master's ear.
Also, one must form a hand mudra (symbolic gesture), with the left hand, raise the index finger, bend the lower four fingers into the palm, press the thumb on the upper joint of the index finger, place it by the right ear, and recite the mantra fifty-four times, and do the same for the left ear.

Next, the Great Heart Mantra of Vaiśravaṇa (the King of the North, one of the Four Heavenly Kings) is spoken:

If they see the Heavenly King, they should offer the food and drink from the altar to the Heavenly King, who will then fulfill all the wishes of the practitioner. If the practitioner does not see the Heavenly King, a voice will announce in the void: 'You only need to diligently recite the mantra, and I will fulfill what you seek.' Or there may be a great wind, or only black clouds rising; this method can also succeed. If there are none of the above signs of verification, recite the mantra another seventeen times; if one can bind a person, then this mantra method will surely succeed.

If one seeks the love and respect of a king (曷啰阇, Raja), take one hundred and eight small red beans. Recite the mantra once for each bean and burn them in the fire, completing one hundred and eight recitations. The king will then send someone to summon the mantra master as swiftly as an arrow.
If one seeks the respect of a high-ranking official, take one hundred and eight white mustard seeds. Recite the mantra once for each seed and burn them in the fire, completing one hundred and eight recitations. The high-ranking official will respect you like a Buddha and be greatly pleased.
If one seeks the respect of the women of a high-ranking official's household, take ant-hill soil and mix it with sandalwood water to make one hundred and eight mud balls. Recite the mantra once for each ball and burn them in the fire, completing one hundred and eight recitations. The household will then send someone to ask the mantra master what they need, and they will not hesitate to provide whatever is requested. Sometimes, they themselves will come to respectfully greet the mantra master. Even before seeing the mantra master, they will constantly remember him in their hearts.
If one seeks the respect of all people, take one hundred and eight bitter neem seeds. Recite the mantra once for each seed and burn them in the fire, completing one hundred and eight recitations. All people will come to respect the mantra master as if he were their own parents. All wishes in their hearts will be fulfilled.

If you wish to enter the mountains and be separated from all evil birds and beasts and all evil thieves, take one hundred and eight white mustard seeds. The Goddess of Merit will appear, and all the treasures and all the things that the mantra master seeks will be fulfilled.

If there is an evil person who frequently disturbs and troubles those devoted to the Three Jewels (Triratna, Buddha, Dharma, Sangha) with unkind intentions, chant a mantra twenty-one times over your own hand, call out the name of that evil person, and strike their body from afar. That person will then develop good intentions and will certainly not come to disturb you again. If you wish to change them, the mantra master should generate a compassionate heart and recite the mantra once in front of that evil person, and they will return to their original state.
If you wish to subdue an evil person, chant a mantra over ghee and yogurt one hundred and eight times and burn it in the fire. That evil person will immediately develop a respectful mind.
If you wish to be respected by everyone, take soil, chant a mantra over it twenty-one times, and scatter it on your body. Everyone who sees you will revere you.
If you wish to acquire great power and virtue, chant a mantra over ink and apply it to your forehead. Everyone who sees you will love and respect you.
If you wish for people of great merit to come and respect you, take ashes, chant a mantra over them twenty-one times, and smear them on your body before entering a crowd. Everyone who sees you will be delighted.
If you wish to travel far without being harmed by ferocious beasts, chant a mantra over your left hand, making a fist with the four fingers grasping the thumb. You will be completely safe.
If you wish to know if a young boy or girl is troubled by a ghost sickness, make a Yaksha (a type of guardian deity) figure out of clay and place it in front of a mirror, chanting a mantra over it one hundred and eight times. When asked about the person who is confusing them, the patient will themselves speak the names of the gods and ghosts.
If someone has been poisoned by Gu (a type of venomous insect poison), chant a mantra over water twenty-one times, and the poisonous insects will naturally come out.
If someone is suffering from a ghost sickness, chant a mantra over five-colored threads twenty-one times, making twenty-one knots, and tie it around the patient's neck. The illness will then be cured and disappear.
If someone is suffering from a heart pain, take pomegranate juice, chant a mantra over it twenty-one times, and give it to the patient to drink. The illness will then be cured. Alternatively, chant a mantra over a pomegranate branch and strike the patient with it, and they will also be cured. Or, apply yellow earth to the heart, and they will be cured immediately.
If someone is suffering from fox spirit sickness, chant a mantra over five-colored threads and have a young girl make a rope, chanting a mantra over it one hundred and eight times and tying it around the patient's neck. That woman will think of you every day, with constant and unwavering devotion. If a person desires a woman to come and respectfully serve them, constantly chant the mantra twenty-one times and then scatter ashes on themselves. That woman will think of you day and night, desiring to die for you. If she can see you, she will not be willing to leave even in death, loving you to the point of wanting to die for you. 【English Translation】 English version: Having finished reciting the mantra. Join palms together, sincerely contemplate that oneself is like empty space, without the existence of oneself. When making this contemplation, the practitioner can obtain the ability to become invisible, travel a thousand miles a day, and all undertakings can be accomplished. If you want to subdue heretics and prevent yourself from being burned by fire, take your own blood and mix it with fish blood. Recite the mantra twenty-one times (three times seven) with a wrathful mind. Throw it into the fire, and after the time it takes to eat a meal, you will not be burned by the fire. If subduing heretics, form the aforementioned body mudra, and silently recite the mantra one hundred and eight times with a wrathful mind. All the magic of all heretics will be destroyed and cannot be accomplished. If removing all illnesses caused by Vinayaka (象頭神, elephant-headed deity) and other demons, burn benzoin incense with great wrathful mind, and quickly recite the mantra.
