The Sutra of Māricī Spoken by the Buddha

Translated under Imperial Order by the Tripiṭaka Master Da Guang Zhi Bu Kong of the Tang Dynasty

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World-Honored One) was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti (Śrāvastī). At that time, the World-Honored One told the bhiksus (bhiksu, monks): 'There is a goddess named Māricī (Māricī), who possesses great supernatural powers and the power of self-mastery. She constantly travels before the Sun and Moon Gods. The Sun God and Moon God cannot see her, but she can see the Sun. No one can see her, no one can know her, no one can seize her, no one can bind her, no one can harm her, no one can deceive her, no one can take her property as debt, no one can punish her, and enemies cannot take advantage of her.' The Buddha told the bhiksus: 'If there are those who know the name of this Māricī and constantly remember her, that person will also be invisible, unknowable, unseizable, unbindable, unharmable, and undeceivable. No one will take their property as debt, no one will punish them, and enemies will not be able to take advantage of them. If there are good men and good women who know the name of this Māricī and seek her protection, they should say: 'I (name) know that the Mother Māricī has great divine power. I now take refuge and vow to protect my body. No one can see me, no one can know me, no one can seize me, no one can bind me, no one can harm me, no one can deceive me, no one can take my property as debt, no one can punish me, and enemies cannot take advantage of me.'' 爾時世尊說此陀羅尼已。告諸苾芻。若有受持此經法者。應作是愿。王難中護我賊難中護我。行路難中護我于失道曠野中護我。水火難中護我刀兵軍陣難中護我。鬼神難中護我毒藥難中護我。惡獸難中護我毒蟲難中護我。一切怨家惡人難中護我。佛實語護我法實語護我僧實語護我。天實語護我仙人實語護我。一切處一切時。愿常護我弟子(某甲)莎嚩(二合引)賀(引)。

佛告諸苾芻若善男子善女人苾芻苾芻尼。鄔波索迦鄔波斯迦。國王大臣一切人等有諸難時。但當至心誦此摩利支陀羅尼。不待加功隨誦隨成。遠離諸難除不至心。持誦之時並結本印。以香涂手先結三部心印。二手內相叉為拳並豎二大拇指。是一切如來心印真言曰。

Protect me from the difficulties of travel, protect me in the lost and desolate wilderness. Protect me from the difficulties of water and fire, protect me from the difficulties of knives, weapons, and armies. Protect me from the difficulties of ghosts and spirits, protect me from the difficulties of poison. Protect me from the difficulties of fierce beasts, protect me from the difficulties of poisonous insects. Protect me from the difficulties of all enemies and evil people. The Buddha's truthful words protect me, the Dharma's truthful words protect me, the Sangha's truthful words protect me. The Devas' truthful words protect me, the Immortals' truthful words protect me. In all places, at all times, may you always protect my disciple (name) Svaha.'

The Buddha told the Bhikshus: 'If good men, good women, Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas, Upasikas, kings, ministers, and all people encounter difficulties, they should single-mindedly recite this Marici Dharani. Without waiting for additional effort, it will be accomplished as it is recited. Stay away from all difficulties except for those who are not sincere. When reciting, also form the original Mudra. Anoint the hands with incense and first form the Three Sections Heart Mudra. Cross the two hands inward to form a fist and erect the two thumbs. This is the Heart Mudra of all Tathagatas. The mantra says:

次結大三昧耶印。辟除結界。以右手大指捻小指甲上。餘三指直豎如三股杵形。左手作金剛拳按於心上。隨誦真言以右手印于頂上。左轉三匝辟除一切作障難者。便右旋三匝並揮上下。即成結十方界。一切天龍人非人等不能附近真言曰。

The mantra is: 'Om (引一) Vajra (二合) dhri ka (二合) (半音二)' Next, form the Body-Protecting Tathagata Fist Mudra: Bend the right thumb and place it horizontally in the palm, then grasp the thumb with the other four fingers to form a fist. Use this fist mudra to bless the five places on your body: first the forehead, right shoulder, left shoulder, heart, and throat, reciting the mantra once at each place. Each time, bend the two thumbs to beckon. This is also called the Inviting Mudra. Also, use this mudra to bless the five places on the body, and scatter the mudra on the crown of the head. Next, form the Great Samaya Mudra (Mahasamaya-mudra): For dispelling and establishing boundaries. Make a vajra fist with the left hand and press it against the heart. While reciting the mantra, use the right hand to make the mudra on the crown of the head, rotating it three times to the left to dispel all those who create obstacles. Then rotate it three times to the right and wave it up and down. This establishes the boundaries of the ten directions, and all nagas (Naga), humans, non-humans, etc., cannot approach. 。已下三指握拳令密。又令掌中作孔。安自心前。想自身入此印孔中藏。以右手平掌。右旋摩此印便蓋孔上。想此印即是摩利支天菩薩身。我自身隱藏於摩利支天菩薩心中。一心專注不間斷。誦前根本及心真言。不限遍數但虔誠至心。必獲菩薩威神加護。一切怨家惡人悉不能見。一切災難皆得解脫。若欲供養摩利支菩薩者。應用金或銀或赤銅。或白檀香木或紫檀木等。刻作摩利支菩薩像。如天女形可長半寸。或一寸二寸已下。于蓮花上或立或坐。頭冠瓔珞種種莊嚴極令端正。左手把天扇。其扇如維摩詰前天女扇。右手垂下揚掌向外。展五指作與愿勢。有二天女各執白拂侍立左右。作此像成。戴于頂上或戴臂上或置衣中。以菩薩威神之力不逢災難。于怨家處決定得勝。鬼神惡人無得便。若欲成驗愿見摩利支天真身求勝愿者。誦此陀羅尼滿十萬遍。依法建立曼荼羅。畫摩利支菩薩像。安置壇中種種供養。並作護摩火壇。摩利支天女必現其身。所求勝愿決定成就除不至心。佛告諸苾芻。我為當來惡世苦難恐怖有情。略說摩利支天法。此菩薩有大悲願。常于苦難恐怖之處。護諸有情不令天龍鬼神人及非人怨家惡獸所能為害。汝當受持廣宣流佈饒益。有情諸苾芻等及天龍。八部一切大眾聞佛所說。皆大歡喜信受奉行。

【English Translation】 English version: Then, make a fist with three fingers, making it tight. Also, make a hole in the middle of the palm and place it in front of your heart. Imagine your body entering and hiding in this mudra (mudrā, a symbolic hand gesture) hole. With your right hand, flatten your palm, rotate it to the right, and rub this mudra, then cover the hole. Imagine this mudra is the body of Marici (Mārica, Goddess of Light), and my own body is hidden in the heart of Marici. Focus wholeheartedly and without interruption, reciting the root mantra and heart mantra mentioned earlier. There is no limit to the number of recitations, but be sincere and devout, and you will surely receive the protective power of the Bodhisattva.
