【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Hāritī Sūtra

(Translator lost, now tentatively attributed to the Western Jin Dynasty)

The Buddha was traveling in the country of Mahā-Kapiśa (an ancient country in the Gandhara region). At that time, there was a woman in the country who had many children, but her nature was extremely evil. She often stole other people's children and killed them to eat. The families who lost their children did not know who had taken them, and could only cry in the streets and alleys. People discussed this matter, and this situation did not happen for just one or two days. Ānanda (one of the Buddha's ten great disciples) and many Śrāmaṇas (monastics) often saw crying people when they went out to beg for alms. When they returned, they discussed it together and felt sad for the families who had lost their children. When the Buddha knew about the Śrāmaṇas' discussion, he came to where they were. The Buddha asked the Śrāmaṇas, 'What were you discussing just now?' Ānanda reported to the Buddha, 'We went out to beg for alms and saw many people crying in the streets and alleys. We asked them why they were crying, and they replied, 'Our children who were born have died, and we do not know where their corpses are.' It is not just one family crying like this, but every family has lost children.' The Buddha then explained to Ānanda and the Śrāmaṇas, 'The one who steals children in this country is not an ordinary person, but Hāritī (a Buddhist protective deity). She is now reborn as a human and likes to steal other people's children. This Hāritī has a thousand children, five hundred in the heavens and five hundred in the world. These thousand children are all ghost kings. One ghost king leads tens of thousands of ghosts. Like these five hundred ghost kings, they harass the heavens in the heavens, and five hundred ghost kings harass emperors and people in the world.' The heavens are helpless against these five hundred ghost kings. Ānanda reported to the Buddha, 'Hāritī has now come to this country. Can we now order her not to steal other people's children?' The Buddha said, 'Very good. We can make her not steal other people's children again.' Ānanda asked the Buddha, 'What method should we use to make her not steal other people's children again?' The Buddha then told Ānanda, 'Go to the place where this Hāritī lives. The Śrāmaṇas should wait together for her to go out, and then take all her children away and hide them in the Vihāra (Buddhist monastery).' The Śrāmaṇas immediately went and waited for Hāritī to go out. Then they took her children away, obtained more than a thousand children, and hid them in the Vihāra. Hāritī went to steal other people's children again, but when she returned home, she did not see her own children.

Then she began searching for her own child, looking everywhere in the house, but did not know where the child was. So she went out to the streets, searching throughout the city, but could not find the child. Again, she went outside the city to search, but still could not find the child. Then she returned to the city, walking and weeping. After ten days, the mother went mad, letting her hair down and going to the market. She cried, beat her chest, and wailed to the sky, speaking crazy words. She could no longer eat or drink. The Buddha (Buddha, the awakened one) sent a Śrāmaṇa (Śrāmaṇa, a male renunciate) to see her. The Śrāmaṇa saw the mother and asked, 'Why are you weeping in the market with your hair down?' The mother replied to the Śrāmaṇa, 'Because I have lost many children, that is why I am crying.' The Śrāmaṇa said, 'Do you want to get your children back?' The mother replied, 'I want to get them back.' The Śrāmaṇa said, 'If you truly want to get them back, there is a Buddha (Buddha, the awakened one) here. You can go and ask the Buddha. The Buddha knows about past and future events. If you go, you may be able to get your children back.' Upon hearing these words, the mother felt happy and her mind calmed down. She then followed the Śrāmaṇa to the Buddha's place. She happily went before the Buddha and paid her respects. The Buddha then asked the mother, 'Why are you weeping in the market?' The mother replied to the Buddha, 'Because I have lost my children.' The Buddha asked the mother, 'Where did you leave your children that you lost them?' The mother immediately became silent and did not speak. The Buddha again asked the mother, 'Where did you leave your children and then return?' She remained silent and without words. The mother knew that stealing other people's children was evil. The mother immediately got up, paid her respects to the Buddha, and prostrated with her head to the ground, saying, 'I am too foolish.' The Buddha then asked, 'Do you love your children?' The mother said, 'I love my children; they always want to sit or stand by my side.' The Buddha then asked, 'You know you love your children, so why do you steal other people's children every day? Other people also have children and love them just as you do. The families who lose their children also weep in the streets like you. You, on the contrary, steal other people's children, kill them, and eat them. After death, you should enter Tai Shan Hell (Tai Shan Hell, a Buddhist hell).' Upon hearing these words, the mother became terrified. The Buddha then asked, 'Do you want to get your children back?' The mother immediately got up and again prostrated with her head to the ground, saying, 'Please have mercy on me.' The Buddha then said to the mother, 'If your children are still alive, can you sincerely repent? If you can sincerely repent, I will return your children to you.' The mother said, 'I can sincerely repent.' The Buddha said, 'You can sincerely repent; how do you plan to repent?' The mother said, 'I will listen to the Buddha's teachings and will repent according to the Buddha's words. If the Buddha returns my children, I will not'

【English Translation】 English version Dare to stray from what the Buddha has said? The Buddha said, 'Is it truly as you say?' The mother said, 'It is truly as the Buddha says.' The Buddha then bestowed upon her the five precepts: first, not to kill; second, not to steal; third, not to commit adultery; fourth, not to lie (not to speak with a double tongue); fifth, not to drink alcohol. He told her that if she could uphold these precepts, she could recover her children. The Buddha then said to her, 'You have a thousand children, and I will speak all of their names.' Five hundred children are in the heavens, all of them kings among ghosts, leading the ghost retinues, envying, harming, and disturbing the people of the heavens. Five hundred children are in the world, disturbing the people of the world. Your children, as ghost kings, lead tens of thousands of ghosts. These five hundred children, leading ghost retinues, are countless, extremely envious and wicked. They either claim to be tree spirits, or claim to be earth spirits, or claim to be water spirits, or pretend to be people's brothers and wives, complaining and falsely accusing the family inside and outside the home. Or they claim to be sea gods, or claim to be ship and vehicle gods, or claim to be house gods, or claim to be gods in the darkness of night, or cause people to dream, or cause people to be terrified, creating strange things for people. Or they claim to be the spirits of dead stars, or claim to be those who died of illness. Like this, they waste and disturb people, often not staying in one place, extremely envious and wicked. Like this, they falsely claim, causing people to make sacrifices and slaughter for them. People do not know that they are mostly slaughtering for ghosts, and these foods are for the ghosts, but the ghosts are unwilling to eat them, only envying and wanting to make people commit the act of killing, wanting to make people fall into hell, and do not eat the offerings at all. They are happy to see people making sacrifices, but such ghosts cannot protect people's lives, only increasing their sins. Foolish people do not know, and become poor because of ghosts. When the Hariti (鬼子母) heard the Buddha say these words, she immediately repented wholeheartedly, and instantly attained the Sotapanna (須陀洹果) stage, knowing where she would go in the future. She knelt with palms together and said to the Buddha, 'I am foolish and ignorant, and have done evil in lifetimes to such an extent. Now I am able to uphold the precepts, contemplate the path of righteousness, and my mind can see through everything. I can also see my thousand children. Now I know that what the Buddha says is true and not false. May the Buddha have mercy on me, I want to live next to the Buddha's monastery, I want to call my thousand child kings, I want to make them make a vow with the Buddha, I want to repay the kindness of all people in heaven and earth.' The Buddha said, 'Good, if you have such thoughts, that is very good.' The Buddha said, 'From now on, you should...'

【English Translation】 English version: She agreed with these words and stopped near the Buddha's vihara (monastery). If people in that country who have no children come to her seeking children, she should grant them children, according to their wishes. I should instruct my descendants to send people to follow and protect them, and they must not disturb them recklessly again. Those who wish to seek wishes from Kishimojin (Hārītī, demoness who became a protector of children), should invoke the name 'Putamānipaṭa' (Putamānipaṭa, name of Hārītī). Her elder sister is named 'Jrenī' (Jrenī, name of Hārītī's sister). All the ghosts in heaven and earth are under the jurisdiction of 'Mānipaṭa'. She is the master of ships, vehicles, and the property of livelihoods within the four seas, all belonging to 'Mānipaṭa'. 'Mānipaṭa' made a vow with the Buddha, received precepts, and is in charge of protecting people's property. 'Jrenī' is in charge of people's childbirth and should help them. There is a heavenly king named 'Vaiśravaṇa' (Vaiśravaṇa, one of the Four Heavenly Kings), who is in charge of the four directions and protects people's lives. People often follow 'Vaiśravaṇa' when going in and out. You can also seek wishes from a great ghost king named 'Asura' (Asura, a type of demigod), who is in charge of the dragon kings and various poisonous people. Seeking wishes from him can prevent poison from harming people. When seeking wishes, one should have a compassionate heart, without needing any gifts, nor eating people. When people seek wishes from them, they will be granted whatever they ask for, the important thing is not to ask for anything in return, nor to blame people. People come before 'Putamānipaṭa' and pay homage to her.
