蘇婆呼經云。修真言行者。日日供養護方天神。則無災難。于道場外八方。敷茅草或荷葉。或涂圓壇為十位。于帝釋左右安梵天地天。若道場外無置位處。即于道場前閑凈處為方界。于中在八方。中央安置梵天地天。以施十方天。食應用雜粥。所謂粳米油麻。先置一凈葉令極清凈。香美盛一器中。每坐先置一凈葉或凈荼碗。先以凈瓶盛香水。然後䠒跪合掌。召請十方世天。

謹請東方憍尸迦天主與諸眷屬來降於此。我所辦供愿垂納受。

謹請東南方火天山等與諸眷屬來降於此。我所辦供愿垂納受。

謹請南方琰摩天主。羅剎主。天部多天王。水天龍王。風神王等。多聞天王。伊舍那天王。大梵天王。

謹請地居所有諸大神王與諸眷屬來降於此。我所辦供愿垂納受。

伏願冥加衛護於我。心想本方咨白。

退請。次以梵名請世天。

【English Translation】 English version 'The Method of Offering to the Eight Guardian Deities'

The Method of Offering to the Eight Guardian Deities

Collected by the Monk Faquan of Qinglong Temple

The Subāhuparipṛcchā-tantra says: 'Those who practice mantra should daily make offerings to the guardian deities of the directions to avoid calamities.' In the eight directions outside the mandala, spread thatch or lotus leaves, or paint round platforms to represent the ten positions. To the left and right of Indra (Lord of the East), place Brahmā and Pṛthivī (Earth Deity). If there is no place to set up positions outside the mandala, then demarcate a square boundary in a clean, quiet place in front of the mandala, and within it, place the eight directions, with Brahmā and Pṛthivī in the center, to give offerings to the deities of the ten directions. The food should be mixed porridge, that is, rice and sesame. First, place a clean leaf, making it extremely pure, and fill a vessel with fragrant and delicious food. Before each sitting, first place a clean leaf or a clean teacup, first fill a clean bottle with fragrant water, and then kneel and join palms, inviting the deities of the ten directions of the world.

Respectfully invite Kauśika (Indra, Lord of the East) and his retinue to descend here. May you accept the offerings I have prepared.

Respectfully invite Yama (Lord of Death, Lord of the South), Rakshasa (Lord of Demons), Bhūta (King of Spirits), Varuna (Water Deity, Dragon King), Vāyu (Wind God), Vaiśravaṇa (Guardian King of the North), Īśāna (Guardian King of the Northeast), and Mahābrahmā (Great Brahmā).

Respectfully invite all the great divine kings residing on the earth and their retinues to descend here. May you accept the offerings I have prepared.

Humbly pray that you secretly add your protection to me. In your heart, think of your own direction and report.

Withdraw the invitation. Next, address the worldly deities by their Sanskrit names.

Īśāna (Lord of the Northeast) and his retinue of Bhūtas (spirits), holding the spear mudra, samadhi fist, fire erect, wind bent back. The Īśāna mantra says:

namaḥ samanta buddhānāṃ rūdra ya svāhā

Indra Mudra: Inner binding of both hands, with the two index fingers extended like needles. The mantra of Indra (Indra, a protective deity in Buddhism) is:

'Namo samanta buddhanam shakra ya svaha'

Agni Mudra: With the meditation hand, the fire finger and the space finger are pinched together to form a triangle. The wisdom hand raises the four wheel fingers, and the space finger is placed horizontally in the palm. The wind finger is bent, invoking three times. The mantra of Agni (Agni, the god of fire) is:

'Namo samanta buddhanam agnaye svaha'

Yama Mudra: The meditation hand and the wisdom hand are joined together, the earth fingers are back to back, and placed in the moon finger. The mantra of Yama (Yama, the king of hell) is:

稱名敬白。護方天王十二宮神。九執大天二十八宿。業道冥宮本命宿主。我今遇此災變。某事相凌敬謝天眾。順佛教敕。受我迎請。悉來赴會響此。單誠發歡喜心。為我某甲息除災障。增長福壽。或云。從今日起首習真言。我承大聖護念力故。拔濟我等一切有情輪迴苦業。唯愿護世天主游空宿曜。順佛教令輪施我無畏令安樂住。

次應供養凈香水。寫少水葉上以獻。真言曰。

The space mudra (sky element) touches the first joint of the fire mudra (fire element). The mantra says: 'Namo Samanta Buddhanam Chandraya Svaha' Respectfully announcing the names: Guardian Kings of the Four Directions, the Twelve Palace Gods, the Nine Luminaries, the Twenty-Eight Constellations, the Underworld of Karma, and the Lords of the Natal Stars. 【English Translation】 English version: Maṇḍo me buddhānām arara karara malaṃ nandanā mīmā nade me mahā mala svāhā.

The Light Illuminating Dharani says: Make a fist with the right hand and raise it upright. Press the fire wheel against the air, and pinch the middle joint of the fire finger.

Namo samanta buddhānāṃ tathāgatotpadā rocaya spharaṇa vabhāsa nagagana dhiye svāhā.

The Universal Offering Dharani of Bodhisattva Ākāśagarbha (Space Treasury) says:

Namo sarva tathāgatebhyaḥ viśva mukhebhyaḥ sarvathā khaṃ udgate spharaṇe imaṃ gagana kham svāhā.

Visualize the Guardian Kings of the Directions each descending from their respective heavenly palaces to this place. According to their original positions, mark the location with a mudra and cause them to abide there. Recite their names and respectfully announce: Guardian Kings of the Directions, the Twelve Palace Gods, the Nine Luminaries, the Twenty-eight Constellations, the Underworld of Karmic Paths, and the Lords of the Natal Stars. I now encounter this calamity, a certain matter encroaching upon me, and I respectfully apologize to the heavenly hosts. In accordance with the Buddha's teachings, accept my invitation, all come to this assembly, respond to my sincerity, generate a joyful mind, and for me, so-and-so, extinguish calamities and increase blessings and longevity (or say: So-and-so, starting from today for a certain number of days, will recite a certain dharani, during which time protect the mandala, eliminate obstacles and difficulties, and so-and-so will report the remaining matters). I, relying on the power of the Great Sage's protection and mindfulness, deliver myself and all sentient beings from the suffering of karmic cycles. May the Guardian Lords of the Directions, traversing the sky, and the constellations, in accordance with the Buddha's commands, revolve and bestow upon me fearlessness, causing me to abide in peace and happiness. After the announcement is complete, then offer pure water from a clean vase on a leaf. The dharani says:

Namo samanta buddhānām indrāya arghaṃ.

每位從水至燭獻畢然向。其次其燭作意獻諸位。未遍已來莫令燭滅。或須助伴驅使數人。各執一事以祇供。若一一自取。恐燭不終法事似不吉祥。再白求事。或可施繞。或復安坐。念大吉祥真言三七遍。又唸佛慈護真言一百八遍。將此持誦饒益諸天。愿諸天樂轉更增勝。供獻之間多不如法。唯愿慈悲施我歡喜。師應執爐遍乞歡喜求請無災。說偈□明發遣天主諸天自在威神力。今□求者速成就。唯愿天主還本宮后。若請時垂哀赴。

次施一切鬼神食。蘇婆呼經云。複次蘇婆呼。若唸誦人慾得成就作持諸法令無障難得悉地者。以諸飲食祭祀諸天修羅藥叉龍王迦嚕拏共命鳥羯吒布單那乾闥婆部多諸鬼魅等。或居地上或處虛空。令唸誦人無諸難事。意願所求皆悉滿足。真言契印牢結護。右膝著地啟請言曰。

【English Translation】 English version: Then, flick the middle finger and offer a small amount of scented paste, saying 'Offer Dam'.

Next, place a flower next to the seat. The offering of the flower is called Bu Se (two combined, Bù sè) Gan (Bǔ gān reverse, Gān), and burn Dong □ incense. Burn incense in front of the seat in Sanskrit, called Du (extended, Dù) Bu Gan (two combined, Bù gān).

Then, scoop a spoonful of porridge and place it on a leaf, and say 'Wei Lin'. Next, give food to all ghosts and spirits. The Subāhuparipṛcchā-sūtra says: 'Again, Subāhu (Sū pó hū). Offering the True Word Mudra and other things to the Ten Directional Heavenly Kings.

Whenever one receives various Dharmas, completes a session of recitation, or performs Homa (fire ritual), Abhisheka (initiation), etc., one must make offerings to the deities so that one may quickly obtain freedom from difficulties. The verse says:

Contemplate the mind, the Dharmadhatu arises, forming the wrathful Mandala, with the three-cornered Nāga (dragon) form, fiercely blazing and penetrating the Brahma heaven. The three sections follow □□, using a rope to summon and invite four times, completing the body by reciting three times, or perhaps one □□. After the event, having made vows, then form the Mudra of the honored one of the respective direction, each reciting their respective True Word, sending the holy ones to protect the directional heavens.
