爾時,世尊在迦毗羅城尼俱律那僧伽藍所,與諸比丘,並諸菩薩,無數眾會,前後圍繞,而為說法。

爾時,阿難獨居靜處,念所受法。即于其夜三更已后,見一餓鬼,名曰「焰口」,其形醜陋、身體枯瘦、口中火然、咽如針鋒、頭髮蓬亂、爪牙長利,甚可怖畏,住阿難前,白阿難言:「卻後三日,汝命將盡,即便生於餓鬼之中。」

是時,阿難聞此語已,心生惶怖,問餓鬼言:「若我死後,生餓鬼者,行何方便,得免斯苦?」

爾時,餓鬼白阿難言:「汝于明日,若能佈施百千那由他恒河沙數餓鬼,並百千婆羅門仙等,以摩伽陀國所用之斛,各施一斛飲食,並及為我供養三寶,汝得增壽,令我離於餓鬼之苦、得生天上。」

阿難見此焰口餓鬼,身形羸瘦、枯燋極醜、口中火然、咽如針鋒、頭髮蓬亂、毛爪長利,又聞如是不順之語,甚大驚怖,身毛皆豎。即從座起,疾至佛所,五體投地,頂禮佛足,身體戰慄,而白佛言:「愿救我苦

當時,阿難(Ananda)獨自在安靜的地方,憶念所學之法。就在那夜的後半夜,他看見一個餓鬼,名叫『焰口』(Yamaka),它的形狀醜陋,身體枯瘦,口中燃燒著火焰,咽喉細如針尖,頭髮蓬亂,爪牙又長又利,非常可怕。它站在阿難面前,對阿難說:『三天之後,你的壽命將盡,就會墮入餓鬼道中。』

當時,餓鬼對阿難說:『你如果在明天,能夠佈施百千那由他(nayuta,數量單位,意為億)恒河沙數(gangga sandhya,數量單位,形容極多)的餓鬼,以及百千婆羅門(brahmanas)仙人等,用摩伽陀國(Magadha)所使用的量器,每人施捨一斛(hu,量器單位)的飲食,並且為我供養三寶(triratna),你就能增加壽命,使我脫離餓鬼的痛苦,得以往生天上。』

阿難看到這個焰口餓鬼,身形羸弱消瘦,枯槁焦黑極其醜陋,口中燃燒著火焰,咽喉細如針尖,頭髮蓬亂,毛髮爪牙又長又利,又聽到這樣不吉利的話,非常驚恐,渾身汗毛都豎了起來。他立刻從座位上站起來,快速地來到佛陀那裡,五體投地,頂禮佛足,身體戰慄,對佛陀說:『愿您救我脫離苦難!』

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of Buddha Speaking on Saving the Flaming Mouth Hungry Ghost

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Bukong (Amoghavajra) of Daxingshan Temple, who was appointed by imperial decree as the Grand General of the Mansion, holding the Three Excellencies, Special Advancement, Acting Director of the Court of State Ceremonials, Duke of Su of the State, with an estate of three thousand households, bestowed with purple robes, posthumously awarded the title of Grand Minister of Works, with the posthumous title of Dajian and the honorary title of Greatly Wise.

At that time, the World Honored One was in the Nigrodharama (Nigrodharama) of Kapilavastu (Kapilavastu), surrounded by many Bhikshus, Bodhisattvas, and countless assemblies, preaching the Dharma.

At that time, Ananda (Ananda) was alone in a quiet place, contemplating the Dharma he had received. In the third watch of the night, he saw a hungry ghost named 'Flaming Mouth' (Yamaka), whose form was ugly, body emaciated, mouth ablaze with fire, throat as thin as a needle, hair disheveled, claws and teeth long and sharp, extremely frightening. It stood before Ananda and said, 'In three days, your life will end, and you will be reborn among the hungry ghosts.'

When Ananda heard these words, he was terrified and asked the hungry ghost, 'If I am to be reborn as a hungry ghost after death, what means can I employ to escape this suffering?'

At that time, the hungry ghost said to Ananda, 'If tomorrow you can give alms to hundreds of thousands of nayutas (nayuta, a unit of measurement meaning a hundred million) of Ganges sands (gangga sandhya, a unit of measurement describing a very large number) of hungry ghosts, as well as hundreds of thousands of Brahmanas (brahmanas) and immortals, each with a peck (hu, a unit of measurement) of food using the measure used in the country of Magadha (Magadha), and also make offerings to the Triple Jewel (triratna) for me, you will increase your lifespan, and I will be freed from the suffering of hungry ghosts and be reborn in the heavens.'

Ananda saw this Flaming Mouth hungry ghost, its body weak and emaciated, withered and extremely ugly, its mouth ablaze with fire, its throat as thin as a needle, its hair disheveled, its hair and claws long and sharp, and he heard such inauspicious words, he was greatly frightened, and all the hairs on his body stood on end. He immediately rose from his seat, quickly went to the Buddha, prostrated himself with his five limbs on the ground, bowed at the Buddha's feet, his body trembling, and said to the Buddha, 'May you save me from suffering!'


!所以者何?我住靜處,念所授法,見焰口餓鬼,而語我言:『汝過三日,必當命盡,生餓鬼中。』我即問言:『云何令我得免斯苦?』餓鬼答言:『汝今若能施於百千那由他恒河沙數餓鬼,及百千婆羅門仙等種種飲食,汝得增壽。』世尊!我今云何能辦若干餓鬼、仙人等食?」

爾時,世尊告阿難言:「汝今勿怖!我有方便,令汝能施若干百千恒河沙餓鬼,及諸婆羅門仙等,種種飲食,勿生憂惱。」

佛告阿難:「有陀羅尼,名曰『無量威德自在光明殊勝妙力』。若有誦此陀羅尼者,即能充足俱胝那由他百千恒河沙數餓鬼,及婆羅門仙等,上妙飲食。如是等眾,乃至一一,皆得摩伽陀國所用之斛七七斛食。阿難!我於前世作婆羅門,于觀世音菩薩所,及世間自在威德如來所,受此陀羅尼故,能散施與無量餓鬼及諸仙等種種飲食,令諸餓鬼解脫苦身、得生天上。阿難!汝今受持,福德、壽命皆得增長。」

爾時,世尊即為阿難說陀羅尼曰:

「那謨 薩嚩 怛他蘗多(引) 嚩盧枳帝 唵 參婆啰 參婆啰 吽」

佛告阿難:「若有善男子、善女人,欲求長壽、福德增榮,速能滿足檀波羅蜜,每於晨朝、及一切時,悉無障礙,取一凈器,盛以凈水,置少飯麨及諸餅食等,以右手加器,

【English Translation】 English version: 『What is the reason for this?』 I dwell in a quiet place, reciting the Dharma I have received, and I saw a Flaming-Mouth Hungry Ghost (Yankou Egui), who told me: 『In three days, your life will surely end, and you will be reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts.』 I immediately asked: 『How can I be spared this suffering?』 The hungry ghost replied: 『If you can now give to hundreds of thousands of Nayutas (Nayuta, a unit of measurement meaning ten million) of Ganges Sands (Gangesha, the number of sands in the Ganges River, describing an extremely large number) of hungry ghosts, and hundreds of thousands of Brahmin Immortals (Luomen Xianren), various kinds of food and drink, you will increase your lifespan.』 World Honored One (Shizun, a respectful title for the Buddha)! How can I now provide food for so many hungry ghosts, immortals, and others?』 At that time, the World Honored One told Ananda (Ananda, one of the Buddha's ten great disciples): 『Do not be afraid now! I have a skillful means to enable you to give to hundreds of thousands of Ganges Sands of hungry ghosts, and various Brahmin Immortals, various kinds of food and drink, do not generate worry or distress.』 The Buddha told Ananda: 『There is a Dharani (Tuoluoni, mantra), called 『Unlimited Majestic Virtue, Self-Mastery, Radiant Light, Supreme Wonderful Power.』 If someone recites this Dharani, they will be able to fully provide for Kotis (Juzhi, a unit of measurement meaning ten million) of Nayutas of hundreds of thousands of Ganges Sands of hungry ghosts, and Brahmin Immortals, etc., with supreme and delicious food and drink. Such beings, even each one of them, will receive seven times seven pecks of food, using the peck (Hu, a unit of measurement) used in the country of Magadha (Magadha, an ancient Indian kingdom). Ananda! In my past life, when I was a Brahmin, I received this Dharani from Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva (Guanshiyin Pusa), and the Worldly Sovereign Majestic Virtue Thus Come One (Shijian Zizai Weide Rulai), so I was able to scatter and give to countless hungry ghosts and various immortals, various kinds of food and drink, allowing all the hungry ghosts to be liberated from their suffering bodies and be reborn in the heavens. Ananda! If you now receive and uphold this Dharani, your blessings and lifespan will both increase.』 At that time, the World Honored One then spoke this Dharani for Ananda: 『Namo Sarva Tathagata Avalokite Om Sambhara Sambhara Hum』 The Buddha told Ananda: 『If there are good men and good women who wish to seek longevity, increase their blessings and glory, and quickly fulfill the Dana Paramita (Tan Poluomi, the highest state of giving), every morning and at all times, without any obstacles, take a clean vessel, fill it with clean water, add a little rice flour and various cakes and foods, etc., and bless the vessel with your right hand,


誦前陀羅尼滿七遍,然後稱四如來名號:

「曩謨 婆誐嚩帝 缽啰(二合)枳娘(二合)部(引)多啰怛曩(二合) 怛他孽多也(此云多寶如來)

「由稱多寶如來名號加持故,能破一切諸鬼多生已來慳吝惡業,即得福德圓滿。

「那謨 婆誐嚩帝 素嚕波(引)耶 怛他誐哆野(此雲南無妙色身如來)

「由稱妙色身如來名號加持故,能破諸鬼醜陋惡形,即得色相具足。

「曩謨 婆誐嚩帝 尾缽啰(二合)誐攞孽多怛啰(二合)也 怛他孽多也(此云廣博身如來)

「由稱廣博身如來名號加持故,能令諸鬼咽喉寬大,所施之食,恣意充飽。

「曩謨 婆誐嚩帝 阿(上)婆(去)孕迦啰也 怛他蘗多也(此云離怖畏如來)

「由稱離怖畏如來名號加持故,能令諸鬼一切恐怖悉皆除滅,離餓鬼趣。」

佛告阿難:「若族姓善男子等,既稱四如來名號加持已,彈指七遍,取于食器,于凈地上,展臂瀉之。作此施已,于其四方,有百千那由他恒河沙數餓鬼,前各有摩伽陀國七七斛食。受此食已,悉皆飽滿,是諸鬼等,悉舍鬼身,生於天上。

「阿難!若有比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,常以此密言及四如來名號加持食施鬼,便能具足無量福德,則

'Namo Bhagavate Surūpāya Tathāgatāya (This is the Namo Wonderful Form Body Tathāgata)' By the power of chanting the name of Wonderful Form Body Tathāgata (Surūpa-Tathāgata), one can break the ugly and evil forms of all ghosts, and immediately obtain complete and beautiful features. 'Namo Bhagavate Vipula-gatrāya Tathāgatāya (This is the Extensive Body Tathāgata)' By the power of chanting the name of Extensive Body Tathāgata (Vipula-gatra-Tathāgata), one can make the throats of all ghosts wide, so that the food offered can fill them up as they wish. 'Namo Bhagavate Abhayaṃ-karāya Tathāgatāya (This is the Fearless Tathāgata)' By the power of chanting the name of Fearless Tathāgata (Abhayaṃ-kara-Tathāgata), one can eliminate all the fears of all ghosts, and liberate them from the realm of hungry ghosts. The Buddha told Ānanda: 'If good men and women of noble families, after chanting the names of the Four Tathāgatas and empowering the food, snap their fingers seven times, take a food container, and pour the food onto clean ground with outstretched arms. After making this offering, in the four directions, there will be hundreds of thousands of nayutas of Ganges River sands worth of hungry ghosts, each with seventy-seven斛 of food from the country of Magadha in front of them. After receiving this food, they will all be full, and these ghosts will all abandon their ghost bodies and be reborn in the heavens.' 'Ānanda! If there are bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās who constantly use this secret mantra and the names of the Four Tathāgatas to empower food and give it to ghosts, they will be able to accumulate immeasurable merit, then


同供養百千俱胝如來功德等無差別,壽命延長、增益色力、善根具足,一切非人、夜叉、羅剎、諸惡鬼神不敢侵害,又能成就無量福德壽命。

「若欲施諸婆羅門仙等,以凈飲食滿盛一器,即以前密言加持二七遍,投于凈流水中。如是作已,即為以天仙美妙之食,供養百千俱胝恒河沙數婆羅門仙。彼諸仙人得加持食故,以密言威德,各各成就根本所愿、諸善功德,各各同時發誓愿言:『愿是食人,令壽延長、色力安樂;又令其人,心所見聞,正解清凈,具足成就梵天威德、行梵天行。又同供養百千恒河沙如來功德,一切冤仇不能侵害。』

「若比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,若欲供養佛、法、僧寶,應以香、華及凈飲食,以前密言加持二十一遍,奉獻三寶。是善男子、善女人,則成以天肴膳上味,奉獻供養滿十方界佛、法、僧寶,亦為讚歎、勸請、隨喜功德,恒為諸佛憶念稱讚,諸天善神恒來擁護,即為滿足檀波羅蜜。

「阿難!汝隨我語,如法修行,廣宣流佈,令諸眾生普得見聞,獲無量福。是名『救焰口餓鬼及苦眾生陀羅尼經』,以是名字,汝當奉持。」

一切大眾及阿難等,聞佛說已,一心信受,歡喜奉行。

救拔焰口餓鬼陀羅尼經

【現代漢語翻譯】 現代漢語譯本 供養百千俱胝(俱胝:古代印度計數單位,意為千萬)如來的功德,與此功德等同沒有差別,能使壽命延長,增益色身和力量,圓滿具足善根,一切非人(非人:指天龍八部等)、夜叉(夜叉:一種鬼神)、羅剎(羅剎:一種惡鬼)、各種惡鬼神都不敢侵害,又能成就無量的福德和壽命。

『如果想要佈施給婆羅門仙人等,用乾淨的飲食盛滿一個器皿,就用前面的密言加持十四遍(二七遍),投入到乾淨的流水中。這樣做了之後,就等於用天上的仙人美味食物,供養百千俱胝恒河沙數(恒河沙數:形容極多的數量)的婆羅門仙人。那些仙人因為得到加持的食物,憑藉密言的威德,各自成就根本的願望和各種善的功德,各自同時發誓愿說:『愿這個施食的人,壽命延長,色身和力量安樂;又令這個人,心所見聞,正確理解清凈,具足成就梵天(梵天:印度教的創造之神)的威德,修行梵天的行為。又等同供養百千恒河沙數如來的功德,一切冤家仇敵不能侵害。』

『如果比丘(比丘:佛教出家男眾)、比丘尼(比丘尼:佛教出家女眾)、優婆塞(優婆塞:在家男居士)、優婆夷(優婆夷:在家女居士),如果想要供養佛、法、僧三寶,應該用香、花以及乾淨的飲食,用前面的密言加持二十一遍,奉獻給三寶。這位善男子、善女人,就等於用天上的美味佳餚,奉獻供養充滿十方世界的佛、法、僧三寶,也等於讚歎、勸請、隨喜功德,恒常被諸佛憶念稱讚,諸天善神恒常來擁護,就等於圓滿了檀波羅蜜(檀波羅蜜:佈施的最高境界)。』

『阿難(阿難:佛陀的十大弟子之一)!你隨順我的話語,如法修行,廣泛宣揚流佈,令一切眾生普遍得到見聞,獲得無量的福報。這部經名為《救焰口餓鬼及苦眾生陀羅尼經》,用這個名字,你應當奉持。』

一切大眾以及阿難等,聽聞佛陀所說之後,一心信受,歡喜奉行。

救拔焰口餓鬼陀羅尼經

【English Translation】 English version The merit of offering to hundreds of thousands of kotis (koti: an ancient Indian unit of counting, meaning ten million) of Tathagatas is equal and undifferentiated. It prolongs life, increases physical strength and vigor, perfects good roots, and prevents harm from all non-humans (non-humans: referring to Devas, Nagas, etc.), Yakshas (Yakshas: a type of spirit), Rakshasas (Rakshasas: a type of demon), and various evil ghosts and spirits. It also enables the achievement of immeasurable merit and longevity.

『If you wish to give to Brahmin ascetics, etc., fill a clean vessel with pure food and drink, then empower it with the aforementioned mantra fourteen times (two sets of seven), and cast it into clean flowing water. Having done this, it is equivalent to offering celestial, exquisite food to hundreds of thousands of kotis of Ganges-sand-number (Ganges-sand-number: describing an extremely large quantity) of Brahmin ascetics. Because those ascetics receive the blessed food, by the power and virtue of the mantra, each achieves their fundamental wishes and various virtuous merits. Each simultaneously makes a vow, saying: 『May this person who gives the food have prolonged life, physical strength, and happiness; and may this person's mind, in what it sees and hears, have correct understanding and purity, fully achieving the majesty of Brahma (Brahma: the Hindu god of creation) and practicing the conduct of Brahma. Furthermore, it is equivalent to offering to hundreds of thousands of Ganges-sand-number of Tathagatas, and all enemies will be unable to harm them.』

『If a Bhikshu (Bhikshu: a Buddhist monk), Bhikshuni (Bhikshuni: a Buddhist nun), Upasaka (Upasaka: a lay Buddhist man), or Upasika (Upasika: a lay Buddhist woman) wishes to make offerings to the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, they should use incense, flowers, and pure food and drink, empower them with the aforementioned mantra twenty-one times, and offer them to the Triple Gem. This good man or good woman is then equivalent to offering celestial delicacies and supreme flavors to the Buddhas, Dharma, and Sangha filling the ten directions, and is also equivalent to praising, requesting, and rejoicing in merit. They are constantly remembered and praised by all Buddhas, and the benevolent gods of the heavens constantly come to protect them, thus fulfilling the Dana Paramita (Dana Paramita: the perfection of giving).』

『Ananda (Ananda: one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha)! Follow my words, practice according to the Dharma, widely proclaim and disseminate it, so that all sentient beings may universally see and hear it, and obtain immeasurable blessings. This sutra is named the 『Dharani Sutra for Saving the Flaming-Mouth Hungry Ghosts and Suffering Beings』; with this name, you should uphold it.』

The entire assembly, including Ananda and others, having heard the Buddha's words, wholeheartedly believed and accepted them, and joyfully practiced accordingly.
