爾時,世尊在迦毗羅城尼俱律那僧伽藍所,與諸比丘,並諸菩薩、無數眾生周匝圍繞,而為說法。

爾時,阿難獨居凈處,一心計念。即于其夜三更之後,見一餓鬼,名曰「面然」,住阿難前,白阿難言:「卻後三日,汝命將盡,即便生此餓鬼之中。」是時,阿難聞此語已,心生惶怖,問餓鬼言:「我此災禍,作何方計,得免斯苦?」爾時,餓鬼報阿難言:「汝于晨朝,若能佈施百千那由他恒河沙數餓鬼,並百千婆羅門及仙人等,以摩伽陀國鬥,各施一斗飲食,並及為我供養三寶,汝得增壽,令我離於餓鬼之苦、得生天上。」

阿難見此面然餓鬼,身形羸瘦、枯燋極醜、面上火然、其咽如針、頭髮蓬亂、毛爪長利,身如負重,又聞如是不順之語,甚大驚怖,身毛皆豎。即從座起,疾至佛所,五體投地,頂禮佛足,身心戰慄,而白佛言:「救我!世尊!救我!善逝!過此三日,命將終盡。昨夜見一面然餓鬼,而語我言:『汝於三日,必當命盡,生餓鬼中。』我即問言:『以何方計,得免斯

當時,阿難(Ananda)獨自在清凈之處,一心專注思念。就在那夜三更之後,見到一個餓鬼,名叫『面然』(Flaming-mouth),站在阿難面前,對阿難說:『再過三天,你的壽命將盡,就會生到我們餓鬼道中。』當時,阿難聽到這話后,心中非常惶恐,問餓鬼說:『我這個災禍,用什麼方法才能避免這種痛苦?』當時,餓鬼回答阿難說:『你如果在早晨,能夠佈施百千那由他(nayuta,數量單位,意為百萬)恒河沙數(Ganges river sands,極大的數量)的餓鬼,以及百千婆羅門(Brahmin)和仙人等,用摩伽陀國(Magadha)的斗來量,每人施捨一斗飲食,並且為我供養三寶(Three Jewels,佛、法、僧),你就能增長壽命,使我脫離餓鬼的痛苦,得以往生天上。』

阿難見到這個面然餓鬼,身形羸弱消瘦、枯槁焦黑極其醜陋、臉上燃燒著火焰、咽喉細如針孔、頭髮蓬亂、毛髮指甲又長又尖利,身體好像揹負著重物,又聽到這樣不吉利的話語,非常驚恐,全身的毛都豎了起來。立刻從座位上站起,快速地來到佛陀處所,五體投地,頂禮佛足,身心戰慄,對佛陀說:『救救我!世尊(World-Honored One)!救救我!善逝(Well-Gone One)!過了這三天,我的性命就要終結了。昨夜見到一個面然餓鬼,對我說:『你將在三天後,必定命盡,生到餓鬼道中。』我便問它:『用什麼方法,才能避免這種痛苦?』

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha Speaking the Dharani Spell for Saving Flaming-Mouth Hungry Ghosts

At that time, the World-Honored One was in the Nigrodharama monastery in Kapilavastu, surrounded by many bhikshus, bodhisattvas, and countless beings, expounding the Dharma for them.

At that time, Ananda was alone in a quiet place, mindfully contemplating. In the third watch of the night, he saw a hungry ghost named 'Flaming-mouth' standing before him, saying, 'In three days, your life will end, and you will be reborn among us hungry ghosts.' Upon hearing this, Ananda was terrified and asked the hungry ghost, 'What means can I employ to avoid this suffering?' The hungry ghost replied, 'If, in the morning, you can give alms to hundreds of thousands of nayutas of Ganges river sands of hungry ghosts, as well as hundreds of thousands of Brahmins and immortals, each receiving a dou (a unit of measurement) of food measured by the Magadha dou, and if you make offerings to the Three Jewels for my sake, you will increase your lifespan, and I will be liberated from the suffering of a hungry ghost and be reborn in the heavens.'

Ananda saw this Flaming-mouth hungry ghost, whose body was emaciated, withered, and extremely ugly, with flames burning on its face, a throat as thin as a needle, disheveled hair, long and sharp claws, and a body burdened with weight. Upon hearing these inauspicious words, he was greatly frightened, and his hair stood on end. He immediately rose from his seat, quickly went to the Buddha's place, prostrated himself with his five limbs on the ground, bowed at the Buddha's feet, trembling in body and mind, and said to the Buddha, 'Save me, World-Honored One! Save me, Well-Gone One! In three days, my life will end. Last night, I saw a Flaming-mouth hungry ghost who told me, 'In three days, you will surely die and be reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts.' I then asked him, 'What means can I employ to avoid this suffering?'


苦?』餓鬼答言:『汝若施於百千那由他恒河沙數餓鬼,及百千婆羅門並諸仙等飲食,汝得增壽。』世尊!我今云何得免此苦?」

爾時,世尊告阿難言:「汝今勿怖!有異方便,令汝得施如是餓鬼、諸婆羅門及仙等食,勿生憂惱。」

佛告阿難:「有陀羅尼,名曰『一切德光無量威力』。若有誦此陀羅尼者,即成已施俱胝那由他百千恒河沙數餓鬼,及六十八俱胝那由他百千婆羅門並諸仙等前,各有摩伽陀斗四斛九斗飲食。」

佛告阿難:「我於前世曾為婆羅門時,于觀世音菩薩及世間自在德力如來所,受此陀羅尼。我當以此陀羅尼力,便得具足施於無量無數餓鬼及婆羅門並仙等食,以我施諸餓鬼食故,舍離此身,得生天上。阿難!汝今受持此陀羅尼,當自護身。」

即說咒曰:

「那麼 薩縛(無可反,下同) 怛他揭多(去聲呼之) 縛路枳帝(一) 三(上聲,下同)跋(鞞楬反,下同)啰 三跋啰(二) 虎吽(二合)(三)」

佛言:「阿難!若欲作此施食法者,先取飲食,安置凈盤器中,誦此陀羅尼咒,咒食七遍,于門內立,展臂戶外,置槃凈地,彈指七下。作此施已,于其四方,有百千俱胝那由他恒河沙數餓鬼,於一一餓鬼前,各有摩伽陀斗四斛九斗飲食。如是

於是說了咒語:

『那麼 薩縛(Sarva,一切) 怛他揭多(Tathagata,如來) 縛路枳帝(Avalokite,觀) 三(Sam,正)跋啰 三跋啰 虎吽(Hum,種子字)』

佛說:『阿難!如果想要做這個施食法,先取飲食,安置在乾淨的盤子中,誦持這個陀羅尼咒,對著食物唸誦七遍,在門內站立,伸出手臂到門外,把盤子放在乾淨的地上,彈指七下。做了這個佈施之後,在它的四方,有成百上千俱胝那由他恒河沙數的餓鬼,在每一個餓鬼面前,各有摩伽陀斗四斛九斗的飲食。像這樣』

【English Translation】 English version: 『Is it suffering?』 The hungry ghost replied: 『If you bestow food upon hundreds of thousands of Nayutas (a unit of measurement, meaning ten million) of Ganges sands (Ganges sands, describing an extremely large quantity) of hungry ghosts, as well as hundreds of thousands of Brahmins (Brahmin, Hindu priests) and various immortals, you will increase your lifespan.』 World-Honored One! How can I now escape this suffering?』

At that time, the World-Honored One told Ananda (Ananda, one of the Buddha's ten major disciples): 『Do not be afraid now! There is a special method that allows you to bestow food upon these hungry ghosts, Brahmins, and immortals. Do not be worried or distressed about this.』

The Buddha told Ananda: 『There is a Dharani (Dharani, mantra), called 『All Virtues Light Immeasurable Power』. If someone recites this Dharani, it is equivalent to having already bestowed food upon Kotis (Koti, a unit of measurement, meaning ten million) of Nayutas of hundreds of thousands of Ganges sands of hungry ghosts, as well as sixty-eight Kotis of Nayutas of hundreds of thousands of Brahmins and various immortals. In front of each of them, there will be four Hu and nine Dou of Magadha measure (Magadha measure, an ancient Indian measuring tool) of food and drink.』

The Buddha told Ananda: 『In my previous life, when I was a Brahmin, I received this Dharani from Avalokiteśvara (Avalokiteśvara, the Bodhisattva of great compassion) and Lokesvararaja-vikridita-tejo-ratna-tathagata (Lokesvararaja-vikridita-tejo-ratna-tathagata, the name of a Buddha). I should use the power of this Dharani to be able to fully bestow food upon immeasurable and countless hungry ghosts, Brahmins, and immortals. Because I bestowed food upon these hungry ghosts, I abandoned this body and was able to ascend to the heavens. Ananda! You should now uphold this Dharani and protect yourself.』

Then he spoke the mantra:

『Nama Sarva (Sarva, all) Tathagata (Tathagata, Thus Come One) Avalokite (Avalokite, observing) Sambhara Sambhara Hum (Hum, seed syllable)』

The Buddha said: 『Ananda! If you want to perform this food-giving ritual, first take the food and place it in a clean plate, recite this Dharani mantra, chanting it seven times over the food. Stand inside the door, extend your arm outside the door, place the plate on the clean ground, and snap your fingers seven times. After making this offering, in its four directions, there will be hundreds of thousands of Kotis of Nayutas of Ganges sands of hungry ghosts, and in front of each hungry ghost, there will be four Hu and nine Dou of Magadha measure of food and drink. 鬼等,遍皆飽滿。是諸餓鬼,吃此食已,悉舍虛身,盡得生天。」

復言:「阿難!若比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,若能常誦此陀羅尼並奉飲食,即為具足無量功德,命得延長;即成供養百千俱胝如來功德,顏色鮮潔、威德強記;一切非人、步多鬼等,夜叉、羅剎,並諸餓鬼,皆畏是人,心不忍見。是人即為成就具足大力勤進。」

復言:「阿難!若欲施婆羅門及仙食者,當取飲食,滿置缽中,誦此陀羅尼咒,咒食七遍,瀉流水中。具足奉獻無量俱胝百千恒河沙數婆羅門及諸仙等,如天飲食。其婆羅門並仙人等,吃此食已,諸根具足、圓滿吉祥,各發其愿,讚歎施人:『其施食人,心得清凈,而便疾證梵天威德,常修凈行,具足成就供養百千俱胝恒河沙數如來功德,于諸怨敵而常得勝。』

「若比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,若欲供養一切三寶,應當具辦香、華、飲食,誦此陀羅尼咒,咒所施食及香、華等二十一遍,供養三寶。此善男子、善女人等,具足成就諸天妙供及無上供,尊重、讚歎一切如來剎土三寶,諸佛憶念、稱揚讚歎,諸天擁護。」

佛言:「汝去,阿難!當自護身。並及廣為諸眾生說,令諸眾產生就具足無量功德,所生之世常值百千俱胝諸佛。」

Those ghosts, etc., all become full. After these hungry ghosts eat this food, they all abandon their weak bodies and are all able to be reborn in the heavens. The Buddha further said: 'Ananda (one of the ten great disciples of the Buddha)! If bhiksus (male monastics), bhiksunis (female monastics), upasakas (lay male followers), upasikas (lay female followers), if they can constantly recite this dharani (a sacred utterance or spell) and offer food, they will possess immeasurable merit and their lives will be extended; they will accomplish the merit of offering to hundreds of thousands of kotis (an Indian unit of counting, meaning ten million) of Tathagatas (another name for Buddha), their complexions will be bright and pure, their majestic virtue will be strong, and their memory will be good; all amanussas (non-human beings, such as devas and nagas), bhuta ghosts (ghosts), yakshas (a type of guardian deity), rakshasas (evil spirits), and various hungry ghosts will fear this person and will not bear to see them. This person will then accomplish the possession of great strength and diligence.' The Buddha further said: 'Ananda! If you wish to give food to Brahmans (Hindu priests) and immortals, you should take food and fill a bowl with it, recite this dharani mantra, chant the mantra over the food seven times, and then pour it into flowing water. This will fully offer to immeasurable kotis of hundreds of thousands of Ganges sands (an expression for an extremely large number) of Brahmans and various immortals, like heavenly food. After those Brahmans and immortals eat this food, their faculties will be complete, perfect, and auspicious, and they will each make their vows, praising the giver: 'This person who gives food will have a pure mind and will quickly attain the majestic virtue of Brahma (the Hindu god of creation), constantly cultivate pure conduct, and fully accomplish the merit of offering to hundreds of thousands of kotis of Ganges sands of Tathagatas, and will always be victorious over all enemies.' 'If bhiksus, bhiksunis, upasakas, upasikas wish to make offerings to all the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), they should prepare incense, flowers, and food, recite this dharani mantra, chant the mantra over the food, incense, flowers, etc., twenty-one times, and offer them to the Three Jewels. These good men and good women will fully accomplish the wonderful offerings of the devas and the unsurpassed offerings, respect and praise the Three Jewels in all Buddha-ksetras (Buddha-fields), the Buddhas will remember, praise, and extol them, and the devas will protect them.' The Buddha said: 'Go, Ananda! You should protect yourself and widely proclaim this to all sentient beings, so that all sentient beings may accomplish immeasurable merit and constantly encounter hundreds of thousands of kotis of Buddhas in their lifetimes.'
