特進試鴻臚卿大興善寺三藏沙門大廣智不空奉 詔譯

先出眾生食。事須如法。周匝種種皆著並須凈好。或一分或少許或一器。皆須安凈銅器中如法。如無銅器白瓷亦得。如無瓷器可用漆器。其飲食須和清水。面向東立坐亦得作法。

夫欲施一切餓鬼飲食者。先鬚髮廣大心普請餓鬼。先誦此偈至心一遍。然後作召請法。所獲福利果報不可校量。

比丘比丘尼(某甲)發心奉持  一器凈食  普施十方  窮盡虛空  周遍法界  微塵剎中  所有國土  一切餓鬼  先亡久遠  山川地主  乃至曠野  諸鬼神等  請來集此  我今悲愍  普施汝食  愿汝各各  受我此食  轉將供養  盡虛空界  以佛及聖  一切有情  汝與有情  普皆飽滿  亦愿汝身  乘此咒食  離苦解脫  生天受樂  十方凈土  隨意游往  發菩提心  行菩提道  當來作佛  永莫退轉  前得道者  誓相度脫  又愿汝等  晝夜恒常  擁護於我  滿我所愿  愿施此食  所生功德  普將回施  法界有情  與諸有情  平等

比丘、比丘尼(某甲)發心奉持一器乾淨的食物,普遍佈施給十方,窮盡虛空,周遍法界,微塵剎中所有國土的一切餓鬼,先亡的、久遠的、山川地主,乃至曠野的諸鬼神等,請你們都來聚集在這裡,我現在以悲憫之心,普遍佈施食物給你們,愿你們各自接受我的這些食物,轉而供養盡虛空界的佛及聖眾,一切有情眾生,你與有情眾生,都普遍得到飽滿。也愿你們的身軀,憑藉這咒食的力量,脫離痛苦,得到解脫,往生天界享受快樂,在十方凈土隨意游往,發起菩提心,行菩提道,將來成佛,永遠不要退轉。先得道的人,誓願互相救度解脫。又愿你們日夜恒常擁護我,滿足我的願望。愿佈施這些食物所產生的功德,普遍迴向給法界一切有情眾生,與諸有情眾生平等。

'The Method of Giving Food and Water to All Hungry Ghosts' (with Mudras)

Translated by the Great Master of Tripiṭaka, Śramaṇa Amoghavajra (Daguangzhi Bukong) of Daxingshan Temple, holding the title of Special Advance and Acting as Director of the Court of State Ceremonials, under Imperial Decree.

First, prepare the food for sentient beings. This matter must be done according to the Dharma. All kinds of food around should be prepared, and they must be clean and intact. Either one portion, or a small amount, or one container. All must be placed in clean copper vessels, according to the Dharma. If there are no copper vessels, white porcelain vessels can also be used. If there are no porcelain vessels, lacquerware can be used. The food must be mixed with clean water. Face east, standing or sitting, you can perform the ritual.

Those who wish to give food to all hungry ghosts must first generate a vast compassionate heart and universally invite the hungry ghosts to come. First, recite this verse once with utmost sincerity, and then perform the method of summoning. The resulting blessings and rewards are immeasurable.

Bhikkhu/Bhikkhuni (name) aspires to offer a vessel of clean food, universally giving to the ten directions, exhausting the void, pervading the Dharma realm, all hungry ghosts in all lands within the dust-mote realms, the deceased, the long departed, the mountain and land deities, and even the various ghosts and spirits in the wilderness, please come and gather here. I now, with a compassionate heart, universally give you food. May each of you receive this food of mine, and in turn offer it to the Buddhas and sages of the exhaustless void, and all sentient beings. May you and all sentient beings be universally satisfied. Also, may your bodies, relying on the power of this mantra-food, be liberated from suffering, attain liberation, be reborn in the heavens to enjoy happiness, freely roam in the pure lands of the ten directions, generate the Bodhi mind, practice the Bodhi path, become Buddhas in the future, and never regress. Those who attain the path first, vow to mutually save and liberate each other. Also, may you protect me day and night, constantly, fulfilling my wishes. May the merits generated from giving this food be universally dedicated to all sentient beings in the Dharma realm, equally to all sentient beings.


共有  共諸有情  同將此福  盡將回向  真如法界  無上菩提  一切智智  愿速成佛  勿招余果  愿乘此法  疾得成佛

合掌當心誦此偈。以印作召請 開喉印 以右手大指與中指。面相捻。餘三指相去。微作曲勢即是。名普集印 咒曰。

誦此咒語時,以左手執持食器,以右手作前召請印。唯改變為誦咒一次,彈指一次。以大拇指與中指頭相捻,彈指作聲即是。其餘三指打開稍微彎曲,此名破地獄門及開咽喉印。爾時如來,即說無量威德自在光明勝妙之力加持飲食陀羅尼(Dharani,總持)。

【English Translation】 English version Shared with All: May all sentient beings together share this merit. Complete Dedication: May we completely dedicate this merit to the Dharmadhatu (the realm of reality as it is), to attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (unsurpassed complete enlightenment). Sarvajnata (the wisdom that knows all things as they are): May we quickly attain Buddhahood, without attracting other consequences. May we rely on this Dharma: May we, relying on this Dharma, quickly attain Buddhahood.

Join palms at the heart, and recite this verse. Use the mudra (hand gesture) to summon. The throat-opening mudra: With the right hand, pinch the tips of the thumb and middle finger together, face to face. The other three fingers are separated and slightly curved. This is called the Universal Gathering Mudra. The mantra is:

na mo bhū pu ri ka ri ta ri ta thā ga tā ya

Make this mudra and recite this mantra seventeen times. Broadly cultivate compassion, wishing that all hungry ghosts in the dust-mote lands of the Dharma realm may gather together.

Also, recite the mantra for opening the gates of hell and the throat:

oṃ bhū pu te ri ka ta ri ta thā ga tā ya

When reciting this mantra, hold the food vessel with the left hand, and make the previous summoning mudra with the right hand. Only change it to reciting the mantra once and snapping the fingers once. Pinch the tips of the thumb and middle finger together to make a snapping sound. The other three fingers are open and slightly curved. This is called the Hell-Breaking Gate and Throat-Opening Mudra. At that time, the Tathagata (Buddha), then speaks the Dharani (mantra) for blessing food with immeasurable majestic virtue, self-mastery, light, and wondrous power.

又誦蒙甘露法味真言。作施無畏印。以右手豎臂。展五指直上即是。真言曰。

'na maḥ sa rva ta thā ga tā va lo ki te oṃ saṃ bha ra saṃ bha ra hūṃ' (Homage to all Tathagata Avalokite, Om, complete, complete, Hum)

Recite this mantra seventeen times. Each and every hungry ghost will receive seventy-seven 'hu' (斛, a unit of dry volume) of food measured by the Magadha (ancient Indian kingdom) standard. After eating, they will all be reborn in the heavens or pure lands. This can eliminate the karmic obstacles of the practitioner and increase their lifespan. In this life, they will obtain immeasurable and boundless blessings, let alone in the future. Then, make a hand seal and recite this mantra to bless the food. Use the thumb of the right hand to rub the middle fingernail three or two times. Keep the three fingers straight. Also, use the thumb to pinch the index finger and snap the fingers to make a sound. One recitation of the mantra and one snap of the fingers is sufficient.

Also, recite the mantra for receiving the nectar of Dharma. Make the gesture of fearlessness. Raise the right arm and extend the five fingers straight up. The mantra says:

'na maḥ su rū pa ya ta thā ga tā ya ta dya thā oṃ srū srū pra srū pra srū svā hā' (Homage to the Tathagata of excellent form, Om, Suru, Suru, Prasuru, Prasuru, Svaha)

作前施無畏印。誦此咒施甘露真言一七遍。能令飲食及水。變成無量乳及甘露。能開一切餓鬼咽喉。能令飲食廣得增多平等得吃也。

次作毗盧遮那一字心水輪觀真言印。先想此vaṃ 鑁字于右手心中。猶如乳色。變為八功德海。流出一切甘露醍醐。即引手臨食器上咒曰。誦此vaṃ 鑁字一七遍。即展開五指。向下臨食器中。觀想乳等從字中流出。猶如日月乳海。一切鬼等皆得飽滿無有乏少。此名普施一切餓鬼印真言曰。

【English Translation】 English version Sūru svāhā (two combined) hā (elongated)

Make the gesture of fearlessness. Recite this mantra, the true words of nectar, seventeen times. It can transform food and drink, and water, into limitless milk and nectar. It can open the throats of all hungry ghosts (egui, hungry ghosts). It can cause food and drink to be greatly increased, allowing them to eat equally.

Next, make the mudra and mantra of the one-syllable heart water wheel contemplation of Virocana (Virocana, name of a Buddha). First, visualize the syllable vaṃ (seed syllable), the character 鑁, in the center of your right hand, like the color of milk. It transforms into the ocean of eight merits, flowing out all nectar and ghee. Then, bring your hand over the food vessel and chant the mantra. Recite this syllable vaṃ (seed syllable), the character 鑁, seventeen times. Then, spread your five fingers and lower them over the food vessel. Visualize milk and other substances flowing out from the syllable, like the sun, moon, and ocean of milk. All ghosts will be full and without lack. This is called the mantra of the seal of universal giving to all hungry ghosts (egui, hungry ghosts).

Having visualized and recited this mantra seventeen times, write it in a clean place where no one walks, or by a pool, or under a tree. But do not write it under peach trees, willow trees, or pomegranate trees. After writing, with utmost sincerity, recite the names of the Five Tathagatas three times, and the merit will be immeasurable.

【English Translation】 English version Namo Ratnasambhava Tathagata: Homage to the Tathagata Ratnasambhava (Jewel-born), who eliminates the karma of stinginess and greed, and whose merits and virtues are complete. Namo Surūpa Tathagata: Homage to the Tathagata Surūpa (Beautiful Form), who destroys ugly forms and appearances, and whose excellent marks and qualities are complete. Namo Amrita-rāja Tathagata: Homage to the Tathagata Amrita-rāja (King of Nectar), who pours nectar into the Dharma body and mind, causing them to receive happiness. Namo Vipula-gatra Tathagata: Homage to the Tathagata Vipula-gatra (Broad Body), whose throat is wide and spacious, allowing one to receive wonderful flavors.

若施食已。行者當更為諸鬼神等。誦受菩薩三昧耶戒陀羅尼。每誦三遍真言曰(印合掌也)。

若施食已,行者當更為諸鬼神等,誦受菩薩三昧耶戒陀羅尼。每誦三遍,真言曰(印合掌也)。

唵 三 摩 耶 薩怛梵 (oṃ sa ma ya stvaṃ):唵 三 摩 耶 薩怛梵(三昧耶,你的存在)。

誦三遍已,一切鬼神皆得堪聞甚深秘法,盡得具足三昧耶戒,獲無量福。

已施諸餓鬼悉皆飽滿訖,當須以陀羅尼法發遣,方得歸於本所。發遣解脫真言曰。

唵 嚩 日啰 目 乞灑 穆 (oṃ va jra mukṣa muḥ):唵 嚩 日啰 目 乞灑 穆(金剛解脫)。

若誦發遣咒,先作咒印。以右手作拳,以大指捻頭指,仰掌彈指作聲。

【English Translation】 English version: A te a bha yaṃ ka rā: Homage to the Bhagavan (Lord), Arhat (Worthy One), Samyak-saṃbuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One), Abhayankara (The Fearless Giver). Ya ta thā ga tā ya: Ya tathāgatāya (To the Thus-Gone One).

Homage to the Fearless Tathagata (Thus-Gone One), who completely removes fear and liberates from the realm of hungry ghosts.

If a practitioner can do this, reciting the names of the Five Tathagatas (Thus-Gone Ones), they will be blessed by the Buddha's majestic light. This enables all hungry ghosts to have their immeasurable sins extinguished and immeasurable blessings generated. They will obtain wonderful and vast forms, gain fearlessness, and the food they receive will transform into nectar, a delicious food. They will quickly leave their suffering bodies and be born in the pure lands of the heavens.

After offering food, the practitioner should further recite the Bodhisattva Samaya Vow Dharani for all the ghosts and spirits. Recite it three times each time. The mantra is (seal with joined palms).

Oṃ sa ma ya stvaṃ: Oṃ samaya stvaṃ (Om, Samaya, your being).

After reciting it three times, all ghosts and spirits will be able to hear the profound secret Dharma, fully receive the Samaya Vow, and obtain immeasurable blessings.

After all the hungry ghosts have been fed and are full, it is necessary to use the Dharani method to dismiss them so that they can return to their original places. The mantra for dismissal and liberation is:

Oṃ va jra mukṣa muḥ: Oṃ vajra mukṣa muḥ (Om, Vajra, release!).

If reciting the dismissal mantra, first make the mantra mudra (hand gesture). Make a fist with the right hand, pinch the index finger with the thumb, turn the palm upward, and snap the fingers to make a sound.


是名發遣啟。每寫食了誦一七遍彈指。能令一切鬼神。得此食已當得去也。若不發遣不得去也。

若不具足如是法者。施諸餓鬼皆不得周匝。或有得者或有不得者。虛用功力深可愍哉。

若有行者發菩提心。能如是修行者。具足此法施諸餓鬼者。一切餓鬼皆得飽滿無有乏少。持法之人悉應知之。若以加持飲食陀羅尼。持一器凈食寫凈流水中。能令一切婆羅門仙皆得此食食已異口同音咒愿。此人于現世中即得延壽。其人具足梵天威德行梵天行。若以此咒咒一切供養佛物。若水若香花飲食。皆咒二十一遍。而然供養佛。即如是種種。以供養十方一切諸佛無異。

施燋面餓鬼一切鬼神陀羅尼經要決

別有救面然餓鬼陀羅尼經唐實叉難陀譯。

如果不能完全按照這些方法去做,佈施給餓鬼的食物就不能周全。有的餓鬼能得到,有的餓鬼得不到。白費力氣,實在可憐啊。

如果有修行者發菩提心,能夠這樣修行,完全按照這些方法佈施給餓鬼,那麼一切餓鬼都能得到飽滿,不會缺少。持法之人應當知道這些。如果用加持飲食的陀羅尼,持誦后將一器乾淨的食物倒入乾淨的流水中,能讓一切婆羅門仙人都能得到這些食物,他們食用後會異口同聲地為此人咒愿。這個人于現世中就能得到延壽,並且具足梵天的威德,行梵天之行。如果用這個咒語加持一切供養佛的物品,無論是水、香、花還是飲食,都念誦二十一遍,然後供養佛,那麼這樣種種的供養,與供養十方一切諸佛沒有區別。

【English Translation】 English version: This is called the 'Dispatch Proclamation'. Each time after writing about the food, recite it seven times and snap your fingers. This enables all ghosts and spirits to receive this food and then depart. If the dispatch is not performed, they cannot leave.

If one does not fully adhere to these methods, the food offered to the hungry ghosts will not be comprehensive. Some hungry ghosts may receive it, while others may not. It is a waste of effort and truly pitiable.

If there is a practitioner who generates Bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment), and is able to practice in this way, fully adhering to these methods when giving to hungry ghosts, then all hungry ghosts will be satiated and will lack nothing. Those who uphold the Dharma should know this. If one uses the Dharani (mantra) for blessing food, and after reciting it, pours a clean vessel of food into clean flowing water, it can enable all Brahmin (a member of the highest Hindu caste) immortals to receive this food. After eating, they will unanimously offer blessings for this person. This person will immediately attain longevity in this present life, and will be endowed with the majesty of Brahma (the creator god in Hinduism) and practice the conduct of Brahma. If one uses this mantra to bless all offerings to the Buddha, whether it be water, incense, flowers, or food, reciting it twenty-one times and then offering it to the Buddha, then such various offerings are no different from offering to all Buddhas in the ten directions.
