爾時,世尊告虛空藏菩薩摩訶薩言:『善男子,是一比丘惡鬼所捉,復一比丘著于邪魅。』時虛空藏菩薩白佛言:『世尊,如來今日憐愍一切諸眾生故,除滅一切諸病苦故,應說神咒。』

The Sutra of the Tathagata's Skillful Means and Expedient Mantra

Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Jñānagupta of the Sui Dynasty

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World-Honored One) was on the summit of Mount Kailasa (Kailasa, name of a mountain), the dwelling place of gods and the abode of immortals. He was with a gathering of five hundred great Bhikshus. There were also five hundred great Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. Their names were Maitreya Bodhisattva (Maitreya Bodhisattva), Akasagarbha Bodhisattva (Akasagarbha Bodhisattva), Samantabhadra Bodhisattva (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva), Boundless Flower Bodhisattva, Universal Flower Bodhisattva, and others. All these Bodhisattvas were dwelling in the stage of 'one lifetime away from Buddhahood', destined to inherit the honored position. At that time, the World-Honored One was in that forest, surrounded by the great assembly. Then, a certain Bhikshu was possessed by a ghost, his body was , and he was not aware of himself. He raised his hands and shouted, his speech was coarse and wild. Another Bhikshu was attached to heresy and turned his back on the Buddha, wailing in the empty sky, unable to be free. Then, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, having seen and heard this, immediately arose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and, with his palms joined, said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, who is it that is making this sound in the empty sky? What is the cause and condition? This Bhikshu's body is , raising his hands and shouting?'

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva-Mahasattva: 'Good man, this Bhikshu is seized by an evil ghost, and another Bhikshu is afflicted by evil spirits.' Then, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, today the Tathagata, out of compassion for all sentient beings and to eliminate all suffering from illness, should speak a divine mantra.'

At that time, the World-Honored One, with his supernatural power, caused six Tathagatas to suddenly appear in the empty sky, each speaking a mantra. The first was named Vipasyin Buddha (Vipasyin), the second was named Sikhin Buddha (Sikhin), the third was named Visvabhu Buddha (Visvabhu), the fourth was named Krakucchanda Buddha (Krakucchanda), the fifth was named Kanakamuni Buddha (Kanakamuni), and the sixth was named Kasyapa Buddha (Kasyapa). At that time, Vipasyin Buddha dwelt in the empty sky, for the sake of protecting all sentient beings and eliminating all evil and wicked ghosts, and

南無佛陀耶(一)南無達摩耶(二)南無僧伽耶(三)唵(四)呵羅呵羅(五)醯隸醯隸醯羅耶(六)南莫結隸結羅耶(七)阇健模柘那耶(八)南無那摩蘇婆訶

爾時毗婆尸佛說是咒已。告虛空藏菩薩言。善男子若清信士及清信女。有能受持讀誦於是陀羅尼者。一切刀杖不能加損。一切水火所不能害。非人惡鬼不能侵惱終不橫死。若中毒藥變成美食易消無病。若欲食時先取一匙七遍咒之。然後乃食。能除一切咒詛厭魅。一切諸病皆得除愈。壽命延長耳所聞事憶持不忘于睡眠中夢見諸佛。若復有人被厭魅者。于其耳邊誦咒七遍。是人聞已即便除愈。若復有人著于癲病及白癲者。應以蘇摩那華。熏胡麻為油。取青木香青蓮華懷香草東門東。皆悉等分令使作末。和油煎之咒一百八遍。涂其身上即便除愈。一切諸病皆能破之。爾時尸棄佛住在虛空。為護一切眾生。除一切病斷一切鬼邪故。說是神咒。

【English Translation】 English version: The mantra is spoken as follows:

Namo Buddhaya (Homage to the Buddha) (1), Namo Dharmaya (Homage to the Dharma) (2), Namo Sanghaya (Homage to the Sangha) (3), Om (Seed syllable) (4), Hara Hara (5), Hili Hili Hilaya (6), Namo Kili Kilaya (7), Jakenamojanaya (8), Namo Namo Svaha.

At that time, Vipasyin Buddha, having spoken this mantra, said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva: 'Good man, if a pure believing man or a pure believing woman is able to receive, uphold, read, and recite this dharani, all swords and staves will not be able to harm them, all water and fire will not be able to injure them, non-human beings and evil ghosts will not be able to harass them, and they will ultimately not die a violent death. If they are poisoned, it will turn into delicious food that is easily digested and without illness. If they wish to eat, they should first take a spoonful of food and chant the mantra seven times, and then eat it. It can eliminate all curses and enchantments, and all diseases can be cured, life can be prolonged, and they will remember everything they hear and not forget it, and they will dream of all the Buddhas in their sleep. If someone is bewitched, chant the mantra seven times in their ear, and that person will be healed immediately after hearing it. If someone is afflicted with epilepsy or vitiligo, they should use Sumanas flowers to fumigate sesame oil, and take Aquilaria sinensis, blue lotus, Angelica dahurica, and soil from the east side of the east gate, all in equal parts, and grind them into powder, and boil them with oil, chanting the mantra one hundred and eight times, and apply it to their body, and they will be healed immediately. It can destroy all diseases.'

At that time, Sikhin Buddha resided in the sky, in order to protect all sentient beings, eliminate all diseases, and cut off all ghosts and evil, therefore, he spoke this divine mantra:

Namo Buddhaya (Homage to the Buddha) (1), Namo Dharmaya (Homage to the Dharma) (2), Namo Sanghaya (Homage to the Sangha) (3), Namo Sikhinidathagataya (Homage to Sikhin Tathagata) (4), Om (Seed syllable) (5), Pata Pata (6), Pataya (7), Sarva Bhutanam (To all beings) (8), Candalaya (9), Prabhidyam (10), Svaha.

At that time, Sikhin Tathagata, having spoken this mantra, said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva: 'Good man, this dharani is spoken by immeasurable hundreds of thousands of millions of nayutas of Buddhas, and I also speak it now, for the sake of compassionating...'


愍一切眾生。除一切病卻一切鬼。及諸惡夢枉橫死等。虛空藏若善男子及善女人。有能晝夜憶念誦持是神咒者。終不為于惡病所惱。及諸惡人之所𥜒魅。于睡眠中夢見諸佛。若捨身時得值彼佛。于其佛所克獲道證。虛空藏是陀羅尼威力無量。我今為汝更略說之。若有善男子善女人。欲斷一切病。當取五色縷結其咒索。若有疫病取蘇摩那華油。咒一百八遍。涂其身上即得除愈。若護自身令安隱者。咒水一百八遍。散於四方結其界場。取五色縷結咒索帶行。小兒著邪者。取青色縷結為咒索。若值惡邪之所嬈亂悶無省者。于其耳邊誦是陀羅尼。乃至七遍即得除愈。如是等一切事中隨意所用。

爾時毗舍浮佛住在虛空。為護一切除諸眾生一切病苦。斷一切惡鬼故。說是陀羅尼。

爾時毗舍浮佛說是咒已。告虛空藏菩薩言。善男子是陀羅尼。賢劫之中所有諸佛。及三世諸佛皆悉說之。我今亦說。虛空藏汝應護持。若有善男子善女人。受持讀誦是陀羅尼。一切刀杖所不能害。一切惡毒亦不能傷。諸瘧熱病皆得遠離。水不能漂火

【English Translation】 English version: Showing compassion for all sentient beings, eliminating all illnesses, dispelling all ghosts, and all kinds of nightmares and accidental deaths, etc. Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, if good men and good women are able to remember and recite this divine mantra day and night, they will ultimately not be troubled by evil diseases, nor will they be deceived by various evil people. In their sleep, they will dream of all the Buddhas, and if they encounter these Buddhas when they abandon their bodies, they will be able to attain the path and realization in the presence of these Buddhas. Akasagarbha Bodhisattva, the power of this Dharani is immeasurable. I will now briefly explain it to you. If there are good men and good women who wish to eliminate all illnesses, they should take five-colored threads and tie them into a mantra cord. If there is an epidemic disease, take Sumana flower oil, chant the mantra one hundred and eight times, and apply it to the body, and they will be cured. If they want to protect themselves and ensure their peace, chant the mantra over water one hundred and eight times, sprinkle it in the four directions, and create a boundary field. Take five-colored threads and tie them into a mantra cord to wear while walking. If a child is possessed by evil spirits, take blue threads and tie them into a mantra cord. If they are disturbed by evil influences and are confused and unconscious, recite this Dharani near their ear, even seven times, and they will be cured. In all such matters, it can be used as desired.

At that time, Vipashyin Buddha (Vipashyin Buddha) resided in the sky, for the sake of protecting all beings, eliminating all suffering from illness, and cutting off all evil ghosts, he spoke this Dharani.

At that time, Vipashyin Buddha, after speaking this mantra, said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva (Akasagarbha Bodhisattva): 'Good man, this Dharani has been spoken by all the Buddhas in the Bhadrakalpa (Bhadrakalpa), as well as the Buddhas of the three times. I am also speaking it now. Akasagarbha, you should protect and uphold it. If there are good men and good women who receive, uphold, read, and recite this Dharani, no swords or staves can harm them, no evil poisons can injure them, all malarial fevers can be kept away, water cannot drown them, and fire cannot burn them.'


不能燒。終不橫死。一切惡病亦不能侵。唯除宿業定報。若有比丘比丘尼優婆塞優婆夷。于晨朝時應凈澡浴著凈潔衣。在佛像前燒好妙香。誦持是咒足一百八遍。一切厭魅咒詛等事悉不能害。一切病苦皆能遠離。舍除諸障壽命延長。所有錢財什物隨心所樂莫不稱遂。若有惡人惡賊。縣官帝主先意慰喻。一切眾生無不同意。若有恐怖斗諍縣官所對者。取白色縷誦咒一百八遍。結咒索帶行者。于諸事中皆悉得勝。若欲長壽者取酪蜜稻穀華和之。以匙抄咒一遍擲火中。乃至一千八遍即便如意。若欲除自他諸障念。一切錢財珍寶等。離一切惡成就一切功巧。受持一切咒降諸怨敵者。取懷香草香末香尸利沙華多伽羅香石上華恭居摩香香附子帝釋手草香。樹枝出白汁者取等分作末。和之咒一千八遍。涂身上即得如意。若欲見縣官大臣等。取樹枝出白汁者然火。咒胡麻一撮咒一遍。擲著火中燒之。乃至一千八遍即得如意。若欲治毒藥者。于佛像前用泥塗地。取紫剛木枝長二寸截一百八枚。內酥蜜中。一一稱彼人名字擲著火中。咒之即得如意。若欲除一切惡鬼者。取燒死屍殘火頭一百八枚。各咒一遍擲火中燒之即便除愈。如是等一切處中用悉皆得。唯除損害眾生身命。

爾時拘婁孫佛住在虛空。為護一切眾生除一切病。斷一切惡

這時,拘婁孫佛(Krakucchanda Buddha)住在虛空中,爲了守護一切眾生,去除一切疾病,斷除一切罪惡。

【English Translation】 English version It cannot be burned. Ultimately, one will not die a violent death. All kinds of evil diseases also cannot invade. Except for the fixed retribution of past karma. If there are bhikshus (bhiksu, male monastic), bhikshunis (bhiksuni, female monastic), upasakas (upasaka, lay male devotee), or upasikas (upasika, lay female devotee), they should purify themselves with bathing in the morning, wear clean clothes, burn fine incense before the Buddha image, and recite this mantra one hundred and eight times. All kinds of enchantments and curses will not be able to harm them. All kinds of suffering from illness can be avoided, all obstacles can be removed, and life can be prolonged. All money and possessions will be as desired, and nothing will be unsatisfactory. If there are evil people or thieves, or county officials or emperors, they will first come to comfort and appease. All sentient beings will agree. If someone is facing terror, strife, or lawsuits in court, take a white thread, recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, tie it into a charmed rope and wear it on the body, and they will be victorious in all matters. If one wants longevity, take milk, honey, rice, and flowers, mix them together, scoop them with a spoon, recite the mantra once, and throw it into the fire, even up to one thousand and eight times, and it will be as desired. If one wants to remove all obstacles for oneself and others, recite all money, treasures, etc., be free from all evil, accomplish all merits and skills, uphold all mantras, and subdue all enemies, take fragrant grass, powdered incense, sirisa-hua (sirisa-hua, acacia flower), tagara-xiang (tagara-xiang, a kind of spice), stone flowers, gungguma-xiang (gungguma-xiang, saffron), cyperus, the grass of the hand of Emperor Sakra, and the sap from tree branches, take equal parts, grind them into powder, mix them together, recite the mantra one thousand and eight times, and apply it to the body, and it will be as desired. If one wants to meet county officials or ministers, take the sap from tree branches, light a fire, chant a handful of sesame seeds, recite the mantra once, and throw it into the fire to burn, even up to one thousand and eight times, and it will be as desired. If one wants to cure poison, use mud to cover the ground in front of the Buddha image, take purple sandalwood branches, cut them into one hundred and eight pieces, each two inches long, put them in ghee and honey, recite the name of that person one by one, throw them into the fire, and recite the mantra, and it will be as desired. If one wants to remove all evil ghosts, take one hundred and eight pieces of the remaining fire from burning a corpse, recite the mantra once for each piece, and throw them into the fire to burn, and they will be removed and healed. Like this, using it in all places will be as desired, except for harming the lives of sentient beings.

At that time, Krakucchanda Buddha (Krakucchanda Buddha) resided in the void, in order to protect all sentient beings, remove all diseases, and cut off all evil.

At that time, Krakucchanda Buddha, having spoken this mantra, said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva: 'Good man, this dharani, even as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, shares the name Krakucchanda Buddha, and is praised and rejoiced by all Buddhas of the three times. If a person receives and upholds this divine mantra, in the future age of the final kalpa, they will be able to establish the Three Jewels and generate right faith. If a Bhikshu, Bhikshuni, Upasaka, or Upasika, in the morning, after cleansing and bathing and wearing new, clean clothes, prepares various wonderful incense and flowers, and makes offerings to the Buddha, reciting this mantra one hundred and eight times, that person will be able to know the events of their past seven lives. If they are born in the heavens, they will be honored among the gods; if they remain in the human realm, they will become a ruler among people. If they can uphold it according to the Dharma throughout their life, at the time of their death, they will be born in the Land of Bliss. If they can constantly recite and uphold it in this way, in their present life, they will be free from all kinds of suffering from illness, and they will obtain dharani, remembering everything they hear. If they wish to eat or drink, before the food enters their mouth, they should first chant the mantra seven times, and then eat it. In this way, they will be free from all poisons and diseases. At that time, Krakucchanda Buddha (拘那含牟尼佛: one of the past seven Buddhas) dwells in the sky, protecting all confused beings, eliminating all illnesses, and cutting off all evil ghosts and demons. If there are good men or good women who can constantly recite and uphold it, they will forever be free from fear and all enemies. Water cannot drown them, fire cannot burn them. If they accidentally eat any poison, it will turn into sweet food, nourishing their bodies and increasing their lifespan. There will be no untimely illnesses or accidental deaths. Their lifespan will be extended, and their official positions will be increased. They will always be protected and remembered by all the Buddhas. If past karmic obstacles arise, reciting it three times a day will eliminate and heal them all. If you want to cure the illnesses and sufferings of others, prepare food and drink according to your ability, as well as various fragrant flowers, whether it be Aquilaria agallocha or frankincense. Make a clean and good soup, chant it one thousand and eight times, and use it to bathe the body. Then, perform the mantra. Those afflicted by illnesses, sufferings, and evil ghosts will all be eliminated and healed. If treating leprosy, bodily swelling, paralysis, or cold diseases, take powdered Acorus calamus, mix it with white honey. Recite the mantra one thousand and eight times before the Buddha, and take it on an empty stomach, and it will immediately be eliminated.'

【English Translation】 English version: Furthermore, if there are those suffering from various malarial fevers such as quartan, tertian, quotidian, or daily fevers, one can also plaster the altar ground in front of the Buddha with cow dung mud. Take Sumanā flowers (jasmine) and make them into garlands to wear on the head, and the fever will immediately be dispelled. If someone is bewitched to the point of fainting and losing consciousness, reciting this mantra one hundred and eight times near their ear will eliminate the affliction. If someone suffers from epilepsy or various forms of madness, or is possessed by spirits such as Kataka-putana (a type of evil spirit) or Pisacas (flesh-eating demons), plaster the ground in front of the Buddha image with cow dung mud. Burn fine incense as before. Take the withered flowers offered to the Buddha, chant this mantra one thousand and eight times, burn them in the fire, and fumigate their nostrils with the smoke, and they will be immediately cured. At that time, after Kasyapa Buddha spoke this mantra, he said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva (Akasagarbha Bodhisattva): 'Good man, this Dharani is spoken by Buddhas as numerous as thirty-three Ganges sands. You should receive, uphold, recite, and practice it.' Akasagarbha, if there are good men or good women who recite this mantra three times during the day and night, they will immediately dream of seeing the Buddhas, and be free from all karmic obstacles, except for the fixed retribution from past lives. In all matters, they will obtain whatever they desire. If someone suffers from leprosy or white leprosy, plaster the ground in front of the Buddha image with cow dung mud, burn fine incense, take all the withered flowers offered to the Buddha, chant this mantra one thousand and eight times, grind them into powder, mix with water, and take it in front of the Buddha, and they will be immediately cured. If someone suffers from chronic illness or various epidemics, the method of treatment is the same. If someone has a headache, you can also apply the flower powder to their forehead. 和油煎之涂其女根。有如是等隨其事用無不蒙益。若疥濕瘡亦用萎華。細末酥和火上煎之。咒千八遍塗上即愈。若欲止雨亦取萎華。咒千八遍露地燒之。令其作煙即時便晴。若大風起雷電震雹亦得除止。若著瘧病一日二日乃至四日。亦取萎華咒千八遍。細搗作末酒和服之即時除愈。著羊癲者咒華如前。若燒若服皆得除愈。若被𥜒魅或毗舍遮諸鬼神等之所捉持。或風冷病月食病等。和水服之。諸如是等一切疾病。悉于佛前牛糞泥地。咒于萎華一千八遍。或燒或服皆悉除愈各受安樂勿生疑惑。應決定信隨心用之。

【English Translation】 English version: If you fry this flower in oil and use it to anoint a woman's genitals, in this way, depending on the specific use, there is no benefit that will not be received. If suffering from scabies or eczema, you can also use withered flowers, grind them into a fine powder, mix with ghee, and fry over a fire. After chanting the mantra one thousand and eight times, apply it to the affected area, and it will heal immediately. If you want to stop the rain, you can also take withered flowers, chant the mantra one thousand and eight times, and burn them in the open air, causing smoke to rise, and it will clear up immediately. If there are strong winds, thunder, lightning, or hail, it can also be eliminated and stopped. If suffering from malaria, for one day, two days, or even four days, you can also take withered flowers, chant the mantra one thousand and eight times, carefully pound them into a powder, mix with wine, and take it, and it will heal immediately. If suffering from epilepsy, chant the mantra for the flowers as before, whether burned or taken, it can be eliminated and healed. If possessed by ghosts or Pisacas (Pisaca, flesh-eating demons) or other spirits, or suffering from wind-cold disease, lunar eclipse disease, etc., mix with water and take it. For all such diseases, in front of the Buddha, on the ground smeared with cow dung, chant the mantra for the withered flowers one thousand and eight times, whether burned or taken, they can all be eliminated and healed, each receiving peace and happiness, do not have doubts. You should firmly believe and use it as you wish.

At that time, Sakyamuni Tathagata (Sakyamuni, the founder of Buddhism) was also in the sky, in order to protect all immeasurable sentient beings, eliminate all diseases, cut off all evils and various evil ghosts, therefore he spoke this divine mantra.

At that time, Shakyamuni Buddha, having spoken this mantra, said to Akasagarbha Bodhisattva (Bodhisattva representing limitless space): 'Akasagarbha, if good men and good women receive, uphold, read, and recite this dharani, no swords or staves can harm them, no water or fire can injure them, no evil diseases can afflict them, and they will never die a violent death. Like the divine mantras spoken by the previous six Buddhas, there is no difference.'

At that time, Akasagarbha Bodhisattva-Mahasattva (Great Akasagarbha Bodhisattva) said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, I shall protect and uphold the divine mantras spoken by the Buddhas mentioned above. Now I also speak a divine mantra to protect all limitless sentient beings, to eliminate all obstacles, cut off all karma, extinguish all sins, dispel all calamities, drive away all ghosts, remove all evil, and heal all diseases. For this reason, I speak this divine mantra.'

議。若有善男子善女人惡鬼所持以諸縷綖作于咒索。一百八遍帶行坐者。是諸惡鬼即便舍離。復更取蘇摩那華好凈牛酥白芥子等。和置一處誦咒一遍一擲火中。如是乃至一百八遍。一百八擲即得除愈。若有惡人欲來害已。取鑌鐵刀子咒一百八遍。斫彼惡人所行道徑便不能害。或復咒水散於四方。結四方界止住其中。一切諸惡則不能加。欲護自身令無損者。以五色縷索作于繩。咒百八遍坐起帶行。若欲除毒手把藥草以咒咒之。若為除病應當咒油。一百八遍涂之即愈。若患耳者取青木香。細搗作末油內煎之。著于耳中。若患腹者咒于姜水一百八遍服之即愈。若患牙齒蟲風齲者。取蘇摩那木枝咒一百八遍以口嚼之。並揩牙齒即便除愈。小兒患者當結白縷。以為咒索令其帶行。若患頭者或用刀子。或用於手咒百八遍即得除愈。若被𥜒魅當咒刀子以用解之。若斷惡風雹雨。咒石榴枝以用擬之。斷惡毒藥咒水用之。諸如是等一切事中隨意所用。於一切處在佛像前泥地。散華燒香如法受持。如是諸佛所說此咒經已。虛空藏菩薩並及一切諸大菩薩阿羅漢等。聞佛所說歡喜奉行。

如來方便善巧咒經

《如來方便善巧咒經》

【English Translation】 English version Furthermore, if good men or good women are possessed by evil spirits, they can make a cursed rope with threads of various colors. By reciting the mantra one hundred and eight times and wearing it while walking or sitting, those evil spirits will immediately depart. Again, take Sumanā flowers (a type of flower), good pure ghee, white mustard seeds, etc., mix them together, and throw them into the fire after reciting the mantra once. Continue reciting and throwing in this way one hundred and eight times, and the illness will be cured. If there are wicked people who want to harm you, take a steel knife, recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, and strike the path that the wicked person will take, and they will not be able to harm you. Or, recite a mantra over water and sprinkle it in the four directions, forming a boundary in the four directions, and staying within it, all evils will not be able to harm you. If you want to protect yourself from harm, make a rope with five-colored threads, recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, and wear it while sitting, standing, or walking. If you want to remove poison, hold medicinal herbs and bless them with the mantra. If it is to remove illness, you should bless oil with the mantra one hundred and eight times and apply it, and it will be cured. If you have an ear ailment, take costus root (Qing Mu Xiang), grind it into a fine powder, fry it in oil, and put it in your ear. If you have an abdominal ailment, bless ginger water with the mantra one hundred and eight times and drink it, and it will be cured. If you suffer from tooth decay or cavities, take a branch of the Sumanā tree, recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, chew it in your mouth, and rub your teeth with it, and it will be cured. If a child is sick, tie a white thread to make a cursed rope and have them wear it. If you have a headache, you can use a knife or your hand, recite the mantra one hundred and eight times, and you will be cured. If you are bewitched by demons, you should bless a knife with the mantra and use it to dispel them. If you want to stop evil winds and hail, bless a pomegranate branch and point it at them. To counteract poisonous drugs, bless water with the mantra and use it. In all such matters, use the mantra as you wish. In all places, in front of the Buddha image, prepare an altar with mud, scatter flowers, burn incense, and uphold the mantra according to the Dharma. Thus, the sutra of this mantra spoken by all the Buddhas is complete. The Bodhisattva Ākāśagarbha (Bodhisattva symbolizing wisdom), as well as all the great Bodhisattvas and Arhats, heard what the Buddha said and joyfully practiced it.
