如是我聞。一時婆伽婆。住王舍城耆阇崛山中。與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。復有菩薩大眾一萬二千人俱。阿逸多菩薩為首。

爾時世尊告彌勒菩薩言。彌勒東方去此佛剎有十不可說諸佛剎億百千微塵等。過諸佛剎有一佛土。名曰解脫主世界。彼世界內有一佛。名曰虛空功德清凈微塵等目端正功德相光明華波頭摩琉璃光寶體香最上香供養訖種種莊嚴頂髻無量無邊日月光明願力莊嚴變化莊嚴法界出生無障礙王如來阿羅訶三藐三佛陀。現在隨心欲行逍遙在處說法。若善男子善女人。犯四重五逆誹謗三寶。及犯四波羅夷。是人罪重假使如閻浮履地變為微塵。一一微塵成於一劫。是人有若干劫罪。稱是一佛名號禮一拜者。悉得滅除。況復晝夜受持讀誦憶念不忘者。是人功德不可思議而彼佛世界中有菩薩名無比。無障礙王如來授彼菩薩記。當得成佛。號豪相日月光明華寶蓮華堅如金剛身毗盧遮那無障礙眼圓滿十方放光照一切佛剎相王如來阿羅訶三藐三佛陀善逝世間解無上士調御丈夫天人師佛世尊

當時,世尊告訴彌勒菩薩(Maitreya Bodhisattva)說:『彌勒,從這裡向東方經過十個不可說那麼多的佛剎(Buddhakṣetra,佛土),再經過億百千微塵數那麼多的佛剎,有一個佛土,名叫解脫主世界。那個世界裡有一尊佛,名叫虛空功德清凈微塵等目端正功德相光明華波頭摩琉璃光寶體香最上香供養訖種種莊嚴頂髻無量無邊日月光明願力莊嚴變化莊嚴法界出生無障礙王如來(Vimalaprabhāsakāya-ratnagandha-agragandha-pūjita-sarva-alaṃkāra-śikhā-ananta-aparimāṇa-sūryacandra-prabhāsa-praṇidhāna-alaṃkāra-vikurvita-dharmadhātu-utpāda-anāvaraṇa-rāja-tathāgata),阿羅訶(Arhat,應供),三藐三佛陀(Samyaksaṃbuddha,正等覺)。現在隨心所欲地行走,逍遙自在地說法。如果善男子、善女人,犯了四重罪(caturmahāpatti,比丘所犯四種最重的罪)、五逆罪(pañcānantarya,殺父、殺母、殺阿羅漢、出佛身血、破和合僧)、誹謗三寶,以及犯了四波羅夷罪(caturaḥ pārājikāḥ,比丘、比丘尼所犯的四種斷頭罪),這個人罪業深重,假使將閻浮提(Jambudvīpa,我們所居住的這個世界)的土地變為微塵,每一粒微塵算作一劫(kalpa,極長的時間單位),這個人有若干劫的罪業。如果稱念這一佛的名號,禮拜一次,都能滅除。更何況晝夜受持、讀誦、憶念不忘呢?這個人的功德不可思議。』而且那個佛世界中有一位菩薩名叫無比(Atula),無障礙王如來(Anāvaraṇa-rāja-tathāgata)授記這位菩薩,將來會成佛,號豪相日月光明華寶蓮華堅如金剛身毗盧遮那無障礙眼圓滿十方放光照一切佛剎相王如來(Tejorāśi-sūryacandra-prabhāsa-puṇḍarīka-vajrakāya-vairocana-anāvaraṇa-netra-paripūrṇa-daśadig-avabhāsa-sarva-buddhakṣetra-lakṣaṇa-rāja-tathāgata),阿羅訶(Arhat,應供),三藐三佛陀(Samyaksaṃbuddha,正等覺),善逝(Sugata,善於去者),世間解(Lokavidū,瞭解世間事者),無上士(Anuttara,無與倫比者),調御丈夫(Puruṣadamyasārathi,善於調伏者),天人師(Śāstā devamanuṣyāṇām,天和人的導師),佛(Buddha,覺者),世尊(Bhagavan,有德者)。

【English Translation】 English version The Sutra of the Buddha's Twelve Names and Divine Mantras, Comparing Merits, Eliminating Obstacles, and Eradicating Sins

Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Jñānagupta from India during the Sui Dynasty

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Blessed One) was dwelling in Rājagṛha (Royal City), on Gṛdhrakūṭa (Vulture Peak) Mountain, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikṣus (monks). There was also an assembly of twelve thousand Bodhisattvas (enlightenment beings), with Ajita Bodhisattva (Invincible Bodhisattva, another name for Maitreya Bodhisattva) as their leader.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Maitreya Bodhisattva: 'Maitreya, going east from this Buddha-kṣetra (Buddha-field) through ten inexpressible Buddha-kṣetras, and then through as many Buddha-kṣetras as there are fine dust particles in a hundred thousand million, there is a Buddha-land called the World of the Lord of Liberation. Within that world, there is a Buddha named Vimalaprabhāsakāya-ratnagandha-agragandha-pūjita-sarva-alaṃkāra-śikhā-ananta-aparimāṇa-sūryacandra-prabhāsa-praṇidhāna-alaṃkāra-vikurvita-dharmadhātu-utpāda-anāvaraṇa-rāja-tathāgata (The King Tathagata of Unobstructed Realm, Born from the Dharmadhatu, Adorned with Transformations, Adorned with the Power of Vows of Limitless and Boundless Sun and Moon Light, Adorned with All Kinds of Adornments, Whose Crown is Adorned, Who is Worshipped with the Best Incense, Whose Body is Like a Lapis Lazuli Light Treasure, Whose Eyes are Like Fine Dust Particles of Pure Merit of Space), Arhat (Worthy of Offerings), Samyaksaṃbuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One). He now freely wanders according to his will, teaching the Dharma wherever he is. If a good man or good woman commits the four grave offenses (caturmahāpatti, the four heaviest offenses committed by a Bhikṣu), the five rebellious acts (pañcānantarya, patricide, matricide, killing an Arhat, shedding the blood of a Buddha, and creating disunity in the Sangha), slanders the Triple Gem (Three Jewels), and commits the four pārājika offenses (caturaḥ pārājikāḥ, the four offenses that lead to expulsion for monks and nuns), the sins of such a person are heavy. Even if the land of Jambudvīpa (the world we live in) were to be turned into fine dust, and each fine dust particle represented one kalpa (an extremely long period of time), the sins of this person would amount to that many kalpas. If one recites the name of this Buddha and makes one bow, all those sins will be eradicated. How much more so if one upholds, recites, and remembers him day and night without forgetting! The merits of such a person are inconceivable.' Moreover, in that Buddha-world, there is a Bodhisattva named Atula (Incomparable). The Anāvaraṇa-rāja-tathāgata (The King Tathagata of Unobstructed Realm) prophesied that this Bodhisattva will attain Buddhahood in the future, and will be named Tejorāśi-sūryacandra-prabhāsa-puṇḍarīka-vajrakāya-vairocana-anāvaraṇa-netra-paripūrṇa-daśadig-avabhāsa-sarva-buddhakṣetra-lakṣaṇa-rāja-tathāgata (The King Tathagata of All Forms, Illuminating All Buddha Lands with Complete Light Radiating in Ten Directions, Unobstructed Eyes of Vairocana, Vajra Body Like a Diamond, Lotus Flower Treasure of Light, Radiance of the Sun and Moon, Whose Markings are Majestic), Arhat (Worthy of Offerings), Samyaksaṃbuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One), Sugata (Well-Gone), Lokavidū (Knower of the World), Anuttara (Unsurpassed), Puruṣadamyasārathi (Tamer of Men), Śāstā devamanuṣyāṇām (Teacher of Gods and Humans), Buddha (Enlightened One), Bhagavan (Blessed One).


彼東方復有佛。名曰一切莊嚴無垢光如來阿羅訶三藐三佛陀。亦應當稱彼佛名亦修恭敬。亦須稱其名號。亦須心念彼佛名號。

南方有佛。名曰辯才瓔珞思念如來阿羅訶三藐三佛陀。亦應當稱彼佛名亦修恭敬。亦須稱其名號。亦須心念彼佛名號。

One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the south, there is a Buddha named Pratibhana-kundala-cinta-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the west, there is a Buddha named Nirmala-candra-mandala-raja-nama-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the north, there is a Buddha named Puspa-alankara-krta-prabha-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the southeast, there is a Buddha named Krta-aloka-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the southwest, there is a Buddha named Ratna-uttama-rupa-nama-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the northwest, there is a Buddha named Abhaya-avalokita-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha in one's mind.

In the northeast, there is a Buddha named Abhaya-nirbhaya-roma-harsha-anama-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). Below, there is a Buddha named Simha-vikridita-mula-Tathagata-Arhat-Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha, Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and remember the name of that Buddha.


亦須心念彼佛名號。

上方有佛。名曰金光威王相似如來阿羅訶三藐三佛陀。亦應當稱彼佛名亦修恭敬。亦須稱其名號。亦須心念彼佛名號。

爾時佛告彌勒。若有正信善男子正信善女人。稱此十二諸佛名號之時。經於十日當修懺悔一切諸罪。一切眾生所有功德皆隨喜勸請。一切諸佛久住於世。以諸善根迴向法界。是時即得滅一切諸罪。得凈一切業障。即得具足成就莊嚴一切佛土。成就具足無畏。復得具足莊嚴身相。復得具足菩薩眷屬圍繞。復得具足無量陀羅尼。復得具足無量三昧。復得具足如意佛剎莊嚴。亦得具足無量善知識。速得成就如上所說不增不減。在於煩惱中行阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。而得端正可喜果報。亦得財寶充足。常生大姓豪族種姓之家。身相具足亦得善和眷屬圍繞。爾時世尊重宣此義而說偈言。

若有善男子  若善女人等  受持此佛名  生生世世中  得他人愛敬  光明威力大  生處為人尊  於後得成佛

佛復告彌勒。若有善男子善女人。若當受持此佛名者。亦須誦此陀羅尼咒。

那時,佛告訴彌勒(Maitreya,菩薩名):『如果有具足正信的善男子、具足正信的善女人,稱念這十二位諸佛名號的時候,經過十日,應當修習懺悔一切諸罪,對於一切眾生的所有功德都隨喜勸請,祈請一切諸佛長久住世,以這些善根迴向法界。』這時,就能滅除一切諸罪,得到清凈一切業障,就能具足成就莊嚴一切佛土,成就具足無畏,又能具足莊嚴的身相,又能具足菩薩眷屬圍繞,又能具足無量陀羅尼(Dharani,總持、真言),又能具足無量三昧(Samadhi,禪定),又能具足如意佛剎的莊嚴,也能具足無量善知識,迅速成就如上面所說的不增不減,在煩惱中修行阿耨多羅三藐三菩提(Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi,無上正等正覺),而得到端正可喜的果報,也能得到財寶充足,常生於大姓豪族種姓之家,身相具足,也能得到善良和睦的眷屬圍繞。那時,世尊再次宣說這個意義而說偈頌:

『若有善男子,若有善女人等,受持此佛名,生生世世中,得他人愛敬,光明威力大,生處為人尊,於後得成佛。』

佛又告訴彌勒:『如果有善男子、善女人,如果應當受持此佛名者,也必須誦此陀羅尼咒。』

【English Translation】 English version: One must also mentally recite the name of that Buddha.

Above, there is a Buddha named Jin Guang Wei Wang Xiang Si Rulai A Luo He San Miao San Fo Tuo (金光威王相似如來阿羅訶三藐三佛陀, meaning Golden Light Majestic King Similar Tathagata Arhat Samyak-sambuddha). One should also recite the name of that Buddha, cultivate reverence, and must recite his name, and must mentally recite the name of that Buddha.

At that time, the Buddha told Maitreya (彌勒, name of a Bodhisattva): 'If there are good men of true faith, good women of true faith, when reciting the names of these twelve Buddhas, after ten days, they should cultivate repentance for all sins, rejoice in and encourage all the merits of all sentient beings, and request all Buddhas to dwell in the world for a long time.' With these good roots, they should dedicate them to the Dharma realm. At this time, they will be able to extinguish all sins, purify all karmic obstacles, and fully accomplish the adornment of all Buddha lands, achieve complete fearlessness, and also achieve complete adornment of their physical appearance, and also achieve the surrounding of Bodhisattva relatives, and also achieve immeasurable Dharani (陀羅尼, mantras), and also achieve immeasurable Samadhi (三昧, meditative absorption), and also achieve the adornment of wish-fulfilling Buddha lands, and also achieve immeasurable good teachers, and quickly achieve what was said above without increase or decrease, practicing Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (阿耨多羅三藐三菩提, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment) in afflictions, and obtain the beautiful and pleasing fruit of retribution, and also obtain abundant wealth and treasures, and be constantly born into families of great surnames and noble lineages, with complete physical appearances, and also obtain the surrounding of kind and harmonious relatives. At that time, the World Honored One again proclaimed this meaning and spoke in verse:

'If there are good men, if there are good women, etc., who receive and uphold the names of these Buddhas, in life after life, they will gain the love and respect of others, have great light and power, be respected as people in the place of birth, and later attain Buddhahood.'

The Buddha again told Maitreya: 'If there are good men, good women, if they should receive and uphold the names of these Buddhas, they must also recite this Dharani mantra.'

受持此咒者  得值六十億  現在十方佛  常憶念是人  一切受生處  常遇善知識  心欲所愿者  一切皆吉祥  誦此陀羅尼  常生諸佛前  微妙蓮華上  化生不受胎  正念正行意  增長智慧等  一聞悉總持  所聞不忘失  受持此咒者  獲得如是福  誦此佛名者  彼人所生處  遠離諸惡道  速得生善處  得陀羅尼定  最妙最勝處  受持不忘失  乃至於菩提  皆由諸佛名  及以陀羅尼  若人施七寶  滿千萬億剎  受持此佛名  福報過於彼  行於菩提行  恒常識宿命  遠離諸眾難  即得自在處  常生

Those who uphold this mantra will encounter sixty billion Buddhas. The Buddhas of the ten directions in the present will constantly remember these people. In all places of rebirth, they will always meet good spiritual friends. Whatever wishes they desire in their hearts, all will be auspicious. Reciting this Dharani, they will always be born before the Buddhas, Born by transformation on a wondrous lotus flower, not from a womb. Right mindfulness, right conduct, increasing intention, increasing wisdom, and so on. Upon hearing it once, they will retain it all, and will not forget what they have heard. Those who uphold this mantra will obtain such blessings. Those who recite these Buddha names, in the places where they are born, Will be far from all evil paths, and quickly be born in good places. They will obtain the samadhi of Dharani, the most wondrous and supreme state. Upholding it without forgetting, until they attain Bodhi. All of this is due to the names of the Buddhas, and the power of the Dharani. If someone were to give seven treasures, filling millions of billions of lands, Upholding these Buddha names, their blessings would surpass that person. Walking the path of Bodhi, they will constantly know their past lives. Far from all calamities, they will immediately attain a state of freedom. Constantly born

After encountering the Buddha and hearing the Dharma, great joy arises in their heart. If they are able to see all the Buddhas, they make offerings to all the Buddhas with wonderful offerings. Those who uphold the name of the Buddha, in countless kalpas (aeons, a unit of time in Buddhism), are able to relinquish the sins of birth and death, and quickly attain Buddhahood. If someone can wholeheartedly, for seven days, recite the name of the Buddha, they will obtain pure eyes and be able to see countless Buddhas. Being able to uphold this Buddha's name, they will obtain immeasurable blessings. The place where this person is born, gods and humans will always respect. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, in countless kalpas, they will not be slandered or insulted by others, and in all the worlds, their name will be widely spread. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, in countless kalpas, gods will always make offerings, and no one will slander them, and they will quickly attain Buddhahood. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, they will not give rise to a timid heart, their wisdom will be without flattery or deceit, and they will always be in the presence of all the Buddhas. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, the place where that person is born, Nāgas (dragons, a type of supernatural being), Yakṣas (a type of guardian spirit), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), Kiṃnaras (half-human, half-bird deities), Asuras (warring deities), Garuḍas (mythical birds), and Mahoragas (serpent deities), humans and non-humans, etc., will always make offerings to this person. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, in every lifetime where they are born, they will often be born into wealthy and noble families, possessing the characteristics of a great man, without stinginess or jealousy, brave and fond of giving. The pores of their body will often emit various wonderful fragrances, and between the teeth in their mouth, a rich fragrance will also emanate, heavenly red sandalwood (a precious fragrant wood), and various other fragrances, for countless kalpas, the fragrance will always be continuous. In every lifetime where they are born, their voice will be like that of Brahmā (the creator god in Hinduism), and also like that of the Kalaviṅka (a beautiful bird), Jīvaṃjīvaka birds, and other birds. The blessings of those who uphold the name of the Dharma-rāja (Dharma-king, another name for the Buddha) are also like this. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, they will be born in a seven-jeweled lotus flower, that lotus flower will have a billion petals, and be complete with majestic light and appearance. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, their parents and all their relatives, will be harmonious and without disputes, and will never experience separation or death.

【English Translation】 English version If there are women who uphold this sutra, they will relinquish their female form and be reborn as wise men. Having obtained a male body, they will then achieve bodhi (覺悟), turn the unsurpassed dharma wheel (佛法), and enter nirvana (寂滅) at will. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, swords and staves cannot harm them, water and fire cannot burn or drown them, and government officials cannot kill them. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, all demons and Mara (魔王), whether they walk, stand, sit, or lie down, will not be able to find an opportunity to harm them. If someone upholds the name of the Buddha, in every place they are born in lifetime after lifetime, they will possess spiritual powers, freely fly in the sky, and be able to reach boundless Buddha lands. They will be able to see all the Buddhas face to face and ask about profound meanings of the Dharma. Those immeasurable Buddhas will immediately know their intentions, speak subtle Dharma for them, and bestow upon them a prediction of bodhi (vyakarana, 預言成佛). Having heard the prediction, great joy will arise in their hearts, and they will have no more doubts about the teachings of all the Buddhas. The profound Dharma spoken by those Buddha-World Honored Ones, that person, having heard the Dharma, will uphold it and never lose it. In the future, they will be able to accomplish the six perfections (paramita, 佈施、持戒、忍辱、精進、禪定、智慧) and the various stages (bhumi, 菩薩修行的階位), fearlessness, powers, and so on, various excellent marks and superior qualities. Regarding the Buddha lands and sentient beings, they can take and use them at will, being born in those Buddha lands, they can quickly achieve perfect enlightenment (samyak-sambodhi, 完全覺悟). They will turn the unsurpassed dharma wheel and enter nirvana at will. If there are good men and good women who uphold this sutra, they will have the same merits as described above. If those who uphold this sutra are cautious and not lax, having heard of the blessings and rewards mentioned earlier, whether it is a full kalpa (劫, a very long unit of time) or less than a kalpa, they must always diligently recite it. Not giving rise to a lazy mind, I command that there be such merits. These Buddhas always reside in the treasury of merit. The King in the Clouds of Space always resides in that place. If someone hears the name of the Buddha, the karmic debt of one kalpa is reduced. Having heard it and giving rise to a respectful mind, that is the strongest person, also a person of great wisdom, also the most superior among people, also a strong man, with great fame in the world.
