如是我聞。一時佛在舍衛國祇陀林中孤獨精舍。與大比丘僧千二百五十人俱。大菩薩眾四萬人俱。娑婆世界主梵天王釋提桓因。四大天王提頭賴吒天王毗留勒叉天王。毗留博叉天王毗沙門天王。將二十八部鬼神大將軍。如是等諸天八萬四千。呵利多將其子及眷屬悉來會坐。
爾時去此佛世界過十萬億佛土有世界名眾華。佛號最勝燈王如來等正覺。今現在說法。遣二菩薩。一名大光二名無量光。而告之曰。善男子汝持此陀羅尼句。至娑婆世界與釋迦牟尼佛。此咒多所饒益。能令眾生長夜安隱。獲大善利色力名譽。即說咒曰。
[口殊]隸 摩訶[口殊]隸 [口*殊]羅尼 阿溪摩溪(用吳音)娑曼汦 摩訶娑曼汦 薩移莎攬寐 娑波呵
時二菩薩從佛受持此陀羅尼句。猶如壯夫屈申臂頃。從眾華國沒。到舍衛國祇陀林中孤獨精舍。時二菩薩前禮佛足。卻住一面白佛言世尊。去此佛世界過十萬億佛土。有世界名眾華。佛號最勝燈王如來正等覺。今現在說法。

The Dhāraṇī Sūtra of the Eastern Supreme Light King
Translated by Tripiṭaka Jñānagupta from North India of the Sui Dynasty
Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove (Jetavana) in Śrāvastī (舍衛國), at the Solitary Garden. He was with a gathering of 1,250 great Bhikṣu monks and 40,000 great Bodhisattvas. Brahmā (梵天王), the lord of the Sahā world (娑婆世界), Śakra devānām Indra (釋提桓因), the Four Great Kings: Dhṛtarāṣṭra (提頭賴吒天王), Virūḍhaka (毗留勒叉天王), Virūpākṣa (毗留博叉天王), and Vaiśravaṇa (毗沙門天王), leading the twenty-eight classes of Yaksha (鬼神) great generals, and eighty-four thousand devas (諸天), Hāritī (訶利多) with her children and retinue, all came to the assembly.
At that time, beyond a hundred trillion Buddha-lands from this Buddha-world, there was a world named Abundant Flowers (眾華), where the Buddha was named Jina-jyotirāja Tathāgata (最勝燈王如來), the Samyaksaṃbuddha, now expounding the Dharma. He sent two Bodhisattvas, one named Great Light (大光) and the other named Immeasurable Light (無量光), and told them: 『Good men, take this Dhāraṇī phrase to the Sahā world and give it to Śākyamuni Buddha (釋迦牟尼佛). This mantra will greatly benefit beings, enabling them to have peace and security throughout the long night, and obtain great benefits, physical strength, reputation.』 Then he spoke the mantra:
[口殊]隸 摩訶[口殊]隸 [口*殊]羅尼 阿溪摩溪(using Wu pronunciation)娑曼汦 摩訶娑曼汦 薩移莎攬寐 娑波呵
At that time, the two Bodhisattvas received and upheld this Dhāraṇī phrase from the Buddha, as quickly as a strong man bends and stretches his arm. They disappeared from the country of Abundant Flowers and arrived at the Solitary Garden in the Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī. The two Bodhisattvas prostrated themselves at the Buddha's feet, stepped back to one side, and said to the Buddha: 『World-Honored One, beyond a hundred trillion Buddha-lands from this Buddha-world, there is a world named Abundant Flowers, where the Buddha is named Jina-jyotirāja Tathāgata, the Samyaksaṃbuddha, now expounding the Dharma.』
遣我等來問訊世尊無病無惱。諸弟子眾不為若魔若鬼。若天若龍若夜叉。若浮陀若富單那若毗舍耶。若餓鬼若干人鬼若乾陀鬼。若狂人鬼若使人心亂鬼。若方道鬼若起死屍鬼。若一日二日三日四日發病鬼。若日月星宿師子虎豹。毒蛇狼狗蝙蝠人若非人。而來惱害。怖畏之者無有是處。
阿難若有善男子善女人。受持讀誦書寫解說。廣令流佈此陀羅尼句。火不能燒不溺水死。刀不能傷毒不能害。王亦不殺梵等諸天不嫌恨之。能自憶念十世生事。阿難此咒是七十七億諸佛所說。若有違犯此咒及持咒者奪其精氣。即為侵毀違逆是諸佛已。
爾時彌勒菩薩。即從坐起整衣服。偏袒右肩右膝著地。合掌叉手前白佛言世尊。我今亦欲說陀羅尼句用饒益眾生。令獲善利色力名譽。即說咒曰。
阿[口致]婆[口致] 㖠[口致]拘㖠[口致] 阿㝹跋帝 婆羅提跋致 兜樓寐 樓漏寐 阿那迦賜 波那迦賜 迦賜 摩訶迦賜 阿㝹多 波羅㝹多 卻翅 摩訶卻翅 斯陀[這-言+卑]啼利 多檀底啼利 寐利 知利 尸利 哹寐 摩訶哹寐 哹哹寐 哹賒婆帝 娑波呵

【English Translation】 English version: We were sent here to inquire after the World-Honored One's well-being, wishing you freedom from illness and affliction. May the assembly of disciples not be troubled by demons, ghosts, gods, dragons, Yakshas (Yaksha, a type of guardian deity), Putanas (Putana, a type of evil spirit), Kumbhandas (Kumbhanda, a type of man-eating demon), Pisachas (Pisacha, a type of flesh-eating demon), hungry ghosts, various human ghosts, Gandharvas (Gandharva, a type of celestial musician), madman ghosts, ghosts that confuse people's minds, ghosts of directions, reanimated corpse ghosts, ghosts that cause illness on the first, second, third, or fourth day, the sun, moon, stars, lions, tigers, leopards, poisonous snakes, wolves, dogs, bats, humans, or non-humans, and may there be no such thing as harm or fear.
Ananda (Ananda, one of the Buddha's ten principal disciples), if there are good men or good women who receive, uphold, read, recite, write, explain, and widely propagate this Dharani phrase, fire will not burn them, they will not die by drowning, swords will not harm them, poison will not hurt them, the king will not kill them, and the Brahmas and other gods will not resent them. They will be able to recall their past lives for ten existences. Ananda (Ananda), this mantra was spoken by seventy-seven billion Buddhas. If anyone violates this mantra or those who hold it, their essence will be taken away, which is to offend and go against these Buddhas.
At that time, Maitreya Bodhisattva (Maitreya Bodhisattva, the future Buddha) immediately rose from his seat, arranged his robes, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms together, and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, I now also wish to speak a Dharani phrase to benefit sentient beings, so that they may obtain good benefits, physical strength, and reputation.' Then he spoke the mantra:
阿[口致]婆[口致] 㖠[口致]拘㖠[口致] 阿㝹跋帝 婆羅提跋致 兜樓寐 樓漏寐 阿那迦賜 波那迦賜 迦賜 摩訶迦賜 阿㝹多 波羅㝹多 卻翅 摩訶卻翅 斯陀[這-言+卑]啼利 多檀底啼利 寐利 知利 尸利 哹寐 摩訶哹寐 哹哹寐 哹賒婆帝 娑波呵
At that time, the Buddha again told Ananda (Ananda): 'You should receive, uphold, read, recite, write, explain, and widely propagate this Dharani phrase.' Why? Ananda (Ananda), this mantra can enable one to recall their past lives for thirteen existences. Ananda (Ananda), this mantra was spoken by eighty-four billion Buddhas.
諸佛所說。若有違犯此咒及持咒者奪其精氣。即為侵毀違逆是諸佛已。
爾時文殊師利法王子菩薩摩訶薩。即從坐起齊整衣服。偏袒右肩右膝著地。合掌叉手前白佛言。世尊我今亦欲說陀羅尼句欲饒益眾生。令獲善利色力名譽。即說咒曰。
阿叉企 娑企 那祇 那祇膩 那祇娑隸 婆那尼利 [口蟲也]呵疑 [口蟲也]呵羅跋致 禪弟疑 禪提羅跋致 娑波呵

爾時佛復告阿難。汝當受持讀誦書寫解說。廣令流佈此陀羅尼句。所以者何。阿難此咒是三世諸佛所說。普除一切患難魔事繫縛。擁護某甲令得安隱。若有毒病若風冷病。若除結病若心腹脊痛。眼耳身痛及以頭痛。如是等患。最勝燈王如來。遣陀羅尼句來與世尊。亦欲令此娑婆世界眾生

這時,佛又告訴阿難(Ananda):『你應當受持、讀誦、書寫、解說,廣泛流佈這個陀羅尼句。』為什麼呢?阿難,這個咒語能夠自己憶念十三世的往事。阿難,這個咒語是過去九十九億諸佛共同宣說的。如果有人違犯此咒語,或者奪取持咒者的精氣,那就是侵犯、毀壞了諸佛。

這時,佛又告訴阿難:『你應當受持、讀誦、書寫、解說,廣泛流佈這個陀羅尼句。』為什麼呢?阿難,這個咒語是三世諸佛所說,普遍去除一切患難、魔事、繫縛,擁護某甲,使他得到安穩。如果有毒病、風冷病、除結病、心腹脊痛、眼耳身痛以及頭痛等患,最勝燈王如來(Most Excellent Lamp King Tathagata)派遣陀羅尼句來給世尊,也想讓這個娑婆世界(Saha World)的眾生……』
English version: The Buddhas said: If anyone violates this mantra or steals the essence of the mantra holder, it is an offense, destruction, and defiance against all the Buddhas.

長夜安隱。獲大善利色力名譽。說咒如上。
爾時四天王以佛神力命不中夭。佛告阿難。若入賊中當念此咒。若入水火欲詣王宮。亦當念此咒。若有種種斗諍疾病怖畏之處。亦當憶念此咒。若有王賊水火。若天龍若夜叉。若浮陀若富單那若毗舍阇。若餓鬼若乾陀鬼。若狂人鬼若使人心亂鬼。若方道鬼若起死屍鬼若吸人精氣鬼。若一日二日三日四日發病鬼。若日月星宿師子虎豹。毒蛇狼狗若蝙蝠。若人若非人而來惱害。怖畏之者無有是處。
阿難若有比丘比丘尼善男子及善女人。若有受持讀誦書寫解說。廣令流佈此陀羅尼句。火不能燒不溺水死。刀不能傷毒不能害不中方道。若以此咒結縷系枯樹上。求哀救護還生華果。何況人耶。惟除宿業已定果報。阿難若於清旦日中及以日暮。三時誦行不令使有廢舍。重罪為輕。若有死罪得杖即止。應被杖者呵責便當即止。若有所求即得勝意。以此神咒力故。諸佛聖人之所護念故。
爾時四大天王。即從座起整衣服。偏袒右肩右膝著地。合掌叉手前白佛言世尊。我今亦欲說陀羅尼句用饒益眾生。令獲善利色力名譽若有比丘比丘尼優婆塞優婆夷。受持讀誦書寫解說。廣令流佈此陀羅尼句。若有惡人若非人。不能得其便。即說咒曰。

這時,四大天王憑藉佛的神力,不會中途夭折。佛告訴阿難(Ananda,佛陀的十大弟子之一):『如果進入盜賊之中,應當唸誦此咒。如果進入水火之中,想要前往王宮,也應當唸誦此咒。如果遇到各種爭鬥、疾病、恐怖畏懼的地方,也應當憶念此咒。如果有來自國王、盜賊、水、火,或者天龍、夜叉(Yaksa,一種守護神),或者浮陀(浮陀,一種鬼),或者富單那(Putana,一種女鬼),或者毗舍阇(Pisaca,一種惡鬼),或者餓鬼,或者乾陀鬼(Gandharva,一種天神),或者狂人鬼,或者使人心亂的鬼,或者方道鬼,或者起死屍鬼,或者吸人精氣的鬼,或者一日、二日、三日、四日發病的鬼,或者日月星宿、獅子、老虎、豹子、毒蛇、狼、狗,或者蝙蝠,或者人,或者非人前來惱害、使人恐怖畏懼,這種情況是不會發生的。』
阿難,如果有比丘(Bhikkhu,出家男子)、比丘尼(Bhikkhuni,出家女子)、善男子以及善女人,如果有人受持、讀誦、書寫、解說,廣泛流佈此陀羅尼句,火不能燒,不會溺水而死,刀不能傷,毒不能害,不會中方道之術。如果用此咒結成繩索,繫在枯樹上,求哀救護,還能重新生長出花果,更何況是人呢?唯獨宿業已定的果報除外。阿難,如果在清晨、中午以及日暮,三個時辰誦行此咒,不令其有廢止,重罪也能變為輕罪。如果有死罪,得到杖刑就能停止;應被杖刑的人,呵責就能停止。如果有所求,就能得到如意的結果。憑藉此神咒的力量,諸佛聖人都會護念。
這時,四大天王立即從座位上站起,整理衣服,袒露右肩,右膝著地,合掌叉手,向前對佛說:『世尊,我現在也想說陀羅尼句,用來饒益眾生,使他們獲得善利、色相、力量和名譽。如果有比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞(Upasaka,在家男居士)、優婆夷(Upasika,在家女居士),受持、讀誦、書寫、解說,廣泛流佈此陀羅尼句,如果有惡人或者非人,不能得其便利。』隨即說咒語道:
多[口*侄]他 多檀多檀
【English Translation】 English version: May the long night be peaceful and secure. May great benefits, beauty, strength, and fame be obtained. The mantra is as described above.
At that time, the Four Heavenly Kings, through the Buddha's divine power, would not suffer premature death. The Buddha told Ananda (one of the ten principal disciples of the Buddha): 'If you enter a place of thieves, you should recite this mantra. If you enter water or fire, or wish to go to the royal palace, you should also recite this mantra. If there are various conflicts, illnesses, or places of fear and dread, you should also remember this mantra. If there are harms from kings, thieves, water, fire, or from dragons, Yakshas (a type of guardian spirit), or Putas (a type of ghost), or Putanas (a type of female ghost), or Pisacas (a type of demon), or hungry ghosts, or Gandharvas (a type of celestial musician), or mad ghosts, or ghosts that confuse people's minds, or ghosts of directions, or ghosts that raise the dead, or ghosts that suck people's vital energy, or ghosts that cause illness for one, two, three, or four days, or from the sun, moon, stars, lions, tigers, leopards, poisonous snakes, wolves, dogs, or bats, or from humans or non-humans who come to harass and cause fear, such things will not occur.'
Ananda, if there are Bhikkhus (monks), Bhikkhunis (nuns), good men, and good women, if they uphold, recite, write, explain, and widely disseminate this Dharani phrase, fire cannot burn them, they will not drown, swords cannot harm them, poison cannot hurt them, and they will not be affected by directional magic. If this mantra is used to tie a thread around a withered tree, and one prays for help and protection, it will revive and produce flowers and fruits, let alone a person? Except for the fixed karmic retribution of past deeds. Ananda, if one recites and practices this mantra three times a day, in the morning, at noon, and at dusk, without fail, heavy sins will be lightened. If there is a death sentence, it will be stopped with a beating; if one is to be beaten, it will be stopped with a reprimand. If one seeks something, one will obtain the desired result. Because of the power of this divine mantra, the Buddhas and sages will protect and remember them.
At that time, the Four Great Heavenly Kings immediately rose from their seats, arranged their robes, bared their right shoulders, knelt on their right knees, joined their palms, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, we also wish to speak Dharani phrases to benefit sentient beings, so that they may obtain benefits, beauty, strength, and fame. If there are Bhikkhus, Bhikkhunis, Upasakas (laymen), and Upasikas (laywomen) who uphold, recite, write, explain, and widely disseminate this Dharani phrase, if there are evil humans or non-humans, they will not be able to take advantage of them.' At that time, the World-Honored One spoke this verse:
This Dharani Sutra, has been spoken by all Buddhas in the past, I now also expound it, to benefit all sentient beings, if people with faithful and joyful hearts, hear and uphold this mantra, it can increase their eloquence, wherever they go, they will not encounter any calamities, no human or non-human beings, Kumbhanda Putana, can cause harm, by reciting and upholding this mantra, they will not be killed by others, by reciting and upholding this mantra, the demon king Mara, especially honored in the desire realm, cannot create obstacles, by reciting and upholding this sutra, their parents, brothers, relatives and close friends, will not encounter any misfortunes, by reciting and upholding this sutra, the unwholesome karma created in hundreds of thousands of millions of kalpas, the ten evils and five rebellious acts, can be extinguished in seven days, by reciting and upholding this mantra, the Bodhisattvas' merits accumulated in millions of kalpas, can be surpassed in seven days, by reciting and upholding this mantra, the Four Great Heavenly Kings, Vidura Dita, Boksha Virudha, their ministers and retinues, rejoice and praise, and respectfully protect them always, by reciting and upholding this mantra.
After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, Sariputra and all the Bhikkhus, and all the worldly gods, humans, asuras, etc., hearing what the Buddha said, were all very happy, accepted it with the crown of their heads, practiced it respectfully, paid homage and departed.

(此經丹藏即云東方最勝燈王如來經。文句大多陪宋本而有餘。按開元錄云。前後四譯三存一失。即東晉失譯。名為陀羅尼章句經。或無章字者是第三譯而一闕本也。今此崛多譯。宋丹兩本文義大別名亦小異。未知孰是。意者宋本古質。似非崛多之譯。又于文中數云陀羅尼句。即恐此經是失本陀羅尼句經。宋藏失崛多譯而得東晉失本陀羅尼經。見經中有最勝燈王之言。遂為崛多所譯燈王經耳。不然何一人之譯。而有名題始末之殊。廣略質文之異耶。今雙存之則四譯還具矣)。

東方最勝燈王陀羅尼經

If one sees a monk with dignified demeanor and foreigners, these are all auspicious. If one sees a monk with an ugly appearance, and sees people weeping and wearing tattered clothes, these are inauspicious signs.
Eastern Most Excellent Lamp King Dharani Sutra
(This sutra is also called 'Eastern Most Excellent Lamp King Tathagata Sutra' in the Dan Tripitaka. The sentences are mostly similar to the Song version but with some additions. According to the 'Kaiyuan Record', there were four translations in total, three of which were preserved and one lost, namely the lost translation during the Eastern Jin Dynasty, named 'Dharani Chapter and Sentence Sutra', or the version without the word 'Chapter' is the incomplete version of the third translation. Now, this sutra translated by Gupta differs greatly from the Song and Dan versions in meaning, and the names are also slightly different, and it is not known which one is correct. I think the Song version is ancient and simple, and does not seem to be translated by Gupta. Moreover, the phrase 'Dharani sentence' is mentioned many times in the text, and I am afraid that this sutra is the lost 'Dharani Sentence Sutra'. The Song Tripitaka lost the version translated by Gupta, but obtained the lost 'Dharani Sutra' of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Because there is a saying of 'Most Excellent Lamp King' in the sutra, it was considered to be the 'Lamp King Sutra' translated by Gupta. Otherwise, why would the translation of the same person have different names, titles, beginnings and ends, and differences in content, detail, simplicity and elegance?
