【English Translation】 English version The Buddha Speaks the Hua Ji Dharani Divine Mantra Sutra
Translated by Layman Zhi Qian of the Yuezhi Kingdom of Wu
Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Dragon King's palace in Anavatapta (Anavatapta, the lake without heat), together with five hundred great Bhikshus (Bhikshu, monks), and one thousand Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas (Bodhisattva-Mahasattva, great Bodhisattvas) who were complete with all Dharanis (Dharani, mantras). These Bodhisattvas had only one more life before residing in the Dasabhumi (Dasabhumi, the ten stages of a Bodhisattva), and would next become Buddhas, like crown princes, all achieving Buddhahood in the ten directions, possessing great adornments, and having no doubt about all the Tathagata's (Tathagata, Thus Come One) merits and virtues. The eight classes of gods and dragons (Devas and Nagas, eight kinds of protective deities) all gathered together at that time. Then, Simhavikridita Bodhisattva (Simhavikridita Bodhisattva) arose from his seat, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One, if a good man or good woman cultivates offerings at the place of the Tathagata, is the merit great?' The Buddha told Simhavikridita: 'Do not speak like this. If a good man or good woman cultivates offerings at the place of the Tathagata, how could the merit not be great?' Why? The Tathagata has achieved immeasurable precepts, concentration, wisdom, liberation, and the knowledge and vision of liberation. If a good man or good woman cultivates offerings at the place of the Tathagata, whether living or deceased, Simhavikridita, you should know that these people will ultimately be liberated in the Sravakayana (Sravakayana, Vehicle of Hearers), Pratyekabuddhayana (Pratyekabuddhayana, Vehicle of Solitary Buddhas), or Bodhisattvayana (Bodhisattvayana, Bodhisattva Vehicle), according to their respective conditions. 'Furthermore, Simhavikridita, if someone sees the Buddha, the World Honored One, and their heart generates joy, respect, and praise, and they give various offerings to the Tathagata; and if someone, after the Tathagata's extinction, sees a Sarira (Sarira, relics) and their heart generates joy, these two merits are equal and without difference.' 'Furthermore, Simhavikridita, if a Bodhisattva at home uses treasures piled up like Mount Sumeru (Sumeru, Mount Meru) to make offerings to Sravakas (Sravaka, Hearers) and Pratyekabuddhas (Pratyekabuddha, Solitary Buddhas), it is not as good as a Bodhisattva who has left home generating Bodhi-citta (Bodhi-citta, the mind of enlightenment) and using one gold coin to make offerings to the Tathagata.' 'Furthermore, Simhavikridita, if someone for millions of years draws near to the World Honored One and fully cultivates offerings; if someone, after the Tathagata's extinction, generates Bodhi-citta and enters a Samgharama (Samgharama, monastery) with a fragrant flower, and says thus when lifting and lowering their feet: Namo (Namo, Homage).'
