Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the dragon king's palace of Anavatapta (阿耨達多, name of a lake), together with five hundred Bhikshus. There were one thousand Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas, all being Ekajatipratibaddha (一生補處, those who will be reborn only once more before attaining Buddhahood), all having attained the Dharani (陀羅尼, a type of mantra or spell) position and the ten Bhumi (十地, ten stages of Bodhisattva path). Just as a prince will soon inherit the throne, so too were these Bodhisattvas, adorned with great merit, and soon to attain the position of Abhisheka (灌頂, empowerment) and become Buddhas. These Bodhisattvas came from various Buddha-worlds in other directions, and had no doubts or hesitations regarding the Buddhas. At that time, in the assembly, there was a Bodhisattva named Simhavikridita (師子奮迅, Lion-like Play), who rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, if there are good men and good women who, throughout their lives, offer all kinds of delightful things to the Tathagata (如來, Thus Come One), how great is the merit they obtain?'
The Buddha told the Bodhisattva Simhavikridita: 'Do not speak like that, giving rise to doubts in your mind. Offering to the Tathagata brings immense merit. Why? Because the Tathagata has immeasurable precepts and virtues, immeasurable Samadhi (禪定, meditative absorption), immeasurable wisdom, immeasurable liberation, and immeasurable knowledge and vision of liberation, as well as all the Shravakas (聲聞, Hearers), Pratyekabuddhas (緣覺, Solitary Buddhas), and Pratyekabuddhas (辟支佛, Solitary Buddhas), and all the virtuous and noble ones. Their merit is immense and immeasurable.' At that time, the Bodhisattva Simhavikridita, hearing what the Buddha said, gave rise to faith and understanding in his mind, and with redoubled reverence, made offerings, honored, respected, and praised the Buddha. He offered clothing, dwellings, bedding, medicine for illnesses, and all kinds of delightful things, providing everything without lack. If there are good men and good women who, after the Parinirvana (滅度, passing away) of the Tathagata, take a grain-sized relic of the Buddha and make offerings and prostrations, their merit is equal to the previous merit. If someone were to use the seven treasures, as numerous as Mount Sumeru (須彌山, the central mountain in Buddhist cosmology), to make offerings to Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas for one Kalpa (劫, eon), they would obtain
【English Translation】 English version 'Is merit much?' 'No, World Honored One.' The Buddha said, 'If there is someone, whether a monastic or a layperson, who can use one copper coin to give alms to someone who has initially aroused the Bodhi mind (bodhicitta, the mind of enlightenment), the merit obtained is such that the previous merit cannot compare to it by one percent, one thousandth, one hundred millionth, or even by calculation or analogy.' 'Yes, yes, as the Buddha said.' If there is someone who, after the Nirvana (parinirvana, complete liberation) of the Tathagata (tathāgata, 'the one who has thus come' or 'the one who has thus gone', referring to the Buddha), walks on a wilderness road and sees a stupa (stupa, a dome-shaped structure serving as a Buddhist shrine) or temple of the Tathagata, whether a good man or a good woman, who can use one flower, one lamp, or one lump of mud to smear before the Buddha image for offering; if there is a good man or good woman who donates one copper coin to the Buddha image for the sake of repair; or who sprinkles a handful of water on the ground of the Buddha's stupa, removing impurities, withered flowers, and candle remnants; or who burns incense for offering, takes one step towards the stupa or temple, or utters once 'Namo Buddha' (Homage to the Buddha), wanting to make this person fall into the three evil realms, for hundreds of thousands of kalpas (kalpa, an aeon, a very long period of time) there will never be such a thing.'
The Buddha told the Bodhisattva Simha Vikridita (Simhavikridita Bodhisattva, Lion's Courage Bodhisattva): 'There is a dharani (dharani, a sacred utterance or spell) called Flower Cluster (Puspakuta), which greatly benefits gods and people. If someone can receive, uphold, recite, understand, and practice it according to the Dharma (dharma, the teachings of the Buddha), the merit obtained exceeds what was mentioned above.' 'Offering to Sravakas (sravaka, a hearer or disciple), Pratyekabuddhas (pratyekabuddha, a solitary Buddha), and Bodhisattvas (bodhisattva, an enlightened being), it cannot compare by one hundred thousand times, or even be known by calculation or analogy.' 'After this person's life ends, they will never be born in the eight difficult places (eight conditions where practicing the Dharma is difficult) or a lowly family. In the place where they are born, the six senses will be complete, they will be able to recognize their past lives, they will always encounter the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), see the Buddha and hear the Dharma, they will never forget the Bodhi mind, they will be able to obtain profound and immeasurable eloquence, ride the six supernormal powers and travel to the Buddha worlds in the ten directions, consult and receive the wonderful Dharma, and teach sentient beings.' At that time, the World Honored One spoke the mantra:
Tadyatha Om Dharaṇi Dharaṇi Dharaṇi Maṇibhadre Subhasani Siddhe Candre Nermale Nirahare Lokapati Buddhapati Tili Ukkacolkhi Khakacolki Rasupagate Tejavati Visala Buddhe Dharmapasi Aksayakarpe Vikaravati Amitakarpe

The Buddha said: If there are good men and good women who wish to practice this Dharani (陀羅尼, Dhāraṇī, a mnemonic device, incantation), they should, in the second, third, or eighth month, from the eighth to the fifteenth day of the white month (referring to the period from the first to the fifteenth of the lunar month), purify themselves by bathing and wearing new, clean clothes. They should sit in a quiet place before an image of the Buddha, hang silk banners and canopies, offer flowers and incense, and perform prostrations and repentance. They should recite this Dharani six times day and night. Whether sitting or walking, they should not let their minds be disturbed. After seven days, they should be able to see the Buddha. If they do not see the Buddha, they should continue for another two or three weeks, reciting this Dharani with focused attention. They will surely see the Buddha sitting on a lotus flower, expounding the Dharma for them. At that time, they will be able to recognize their past lives, their power of mindfulness will be strengthened, and they will attain unobstructed eloquence in Dharani. If they seek extensive learning, seek meditative concentration, seek wisdom, seek eloquence, seek medical knowledge, seek incantations, seek skillful craftsmanship, or seek artistic talent, in this way, whatever they desire in their hearts, they will all obtain. Even until they attain Buddhahood, they will never forget, except for the Four Noble Truths (四諦, sì dì, the Four Noble Truths: suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path to its cessation).
At this time, the Lion Swift Bodhisattva (師子奮迅菩薩, Shī zi fèn xùn pú sà), the gods, people, asuras (阿修羅, ā xiū luó), and all the Bhikshus (比丘, bǐ qiū) joyfully accepted and practiced what the Buddha had said.
