English version

The Sutra of Good Night Spoken by the Buddha, one volume

Translated by the Tang Dynasty Tripiṭaka Master Yijing under Imperial Decree

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World Honored One) was in the Bamboo Grove (Venuvana) of Rajagrha (Rajagrha). Not far from there, there was a Bhikshu (Bhikshu, monk) dwelling near a hot spring. At that time, a Deva (Deva, deity) with a dignified and beautiful appearance and extraordinary radiance, after the first watch of the night, came to the Bhikshu's dwelling. The Deva's majestic light surrounded and illuminated the entire hot spring. He joined his palms in reverence, sat to one side, and said to the Bhikshu, 'Venerable One, have you ever heard of the Sutra of Good Night?' The Bhikshu replied, 'I have never heard of such a Sutra.' The Deva then asked, 'Do you know of it?' The Deva said, 'I also do not know.' The Bhikshu said, 'Who would know?' The Deva said, 'The Supreme Compassionate Father (referring to the Buddha) is in the Bamboo Grove. You may go and inquire of him, and act according to what the Buddha says.' Having spoken these words, he suddenly disappeared.

At that time, after dawn, the Bhikshu went to the World Honored One's dwelling, prostrated at the World Honored One's feet, stood to one side, and reported, 'World Honored One, last night a Deva came to my dwelling after the first watch of the night, his light illuminating the entire hot spring. He asked me, 'Have you ever heard of the Sutra of Good Night?' I said I had not heard of it. I asked the Deva, 'Do you know of it?' He replied that he did not know. I then asked, 'Who would know?' He said, 'The Supreme Compassionate Father is in the Bamboo Grove; you may go and inquire of him, and act according to what the Buddha says.' Having spoken these words, he suddenly disappeared. Because of this matter, I have come here to inquire of the World Honored One.' The Buddha told the Bhikshu, 'Do you recognize that Deva?' He replied that he did not. 'You should know that he is a magnificent Deva of the Trayastrimsa (Trayastrimsa) Heaven, a great general of majestic virtue, named Candana (Candana). He came to awaken you and ask about the name of this Sutra for the benefit of all beings.' At that time, the Bhikshu again said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One, I now wish to hear the Sutra of Good Night; may the World Honored One have compassion and explain it for me.' Thereupon, the World Honored One told the Bhikshu, 'This Sutra of Good Night possesses great merit. If anyone hears it, they can sever afflictions and quickly attain Bodhi (Bodhi, enlightenment). You should listen carefully.'

【English Translation】 English version: Skillful and excellent mindfulness: I shall explain it to you. One should not dwell on things of the past, nor should one crave things of the future. Do not become attached to things of the present. One who practices in this way is called truly liberated. Then, the World Honored One spoke this verse: 'Do not dwell on the past, do not crave the future, in the present moment, observe all things according to the Dharma. It is difficult to dispel delusional thoughts, the wise should observe carefully, one should quickly and diligently cultivate, for who knows what tomorrow will bring, since the hosts of the King of Death are constantly following you. Therefore, I, the Muni (Shakyamuni Buddha), now speak the Good Night Sutra, may all sentient beings always be free from suffering and attain peace and happiness, not create any evil deeds, and constantly cultivate all good deeds.' Then, the World Honored One, wishing to benefit all sentient beings, so that they may obtain peace and happiness in the long night, be free from all obstacles and afflictions, increase their roots of goodness in every birth, always encounter the Three Jewels (Buddha, Dharma, Sangha), and not fall into evil realms, again spoke this Dharani (mantra): 'Tadyatha, vini varani, bhadra matamte, mani ni ci ci ci ci, gauri gandhari, candali matangi, sara rante, mohu ratani sabari, cakra vaki, sabari maha sabari, bhujingi, nimi ni mingi, kritani, svaha, samyeti tam, arghate, nadra ghate, bamsuka vapi, kabu te, kapi, tapu tani svaha.'

【English Translation】 English version: This is the right path that leads to Nirvana (the state of liberation from the cycle of birth and death). If there are good men or good women who receive, uphold, read, and recite this 'Good Night Sutra', they will surely attain the wisdom of remembering past lives in their future rebirths. They will always be honored, secure, and happy. The Buddha further spoke in verse: This person will never encounter unjust or accidental misfortunes at any time. Because they cultivate virtuous deeds in accordance with the times, they will forever be free from untimely death. They will protect all sentient beings, freeing them from illness, sorrow, and fear. They will dispel inauspicious omens and bad dreams, and they will always be safe and secure even on dangerous paths. If men or women wear and uphold this sutra, they will possess beautiful features, be respected by others, and all their wishes will be fulfilled. If there are any unwholesome actions of body, speech, or mind, due to the power of this sutra, there will ultimately be no evil consequences. If they encounter disasters such as floods, fires, lawsuits, thieves, lightning, poison, or enemies in battle, they will be liberated by reciting this sutra. The Buddha also spoke a bright Dharani (a mantra that encapsulates and retains all the meanings of the Dharma). If one can recite this Dharani, at all times, one can increase good roots and eliminate all evils. Then He spoke the Dharani: Tadyatha Nimini mindari Triloka-lokini (Eye of the Three Realms) Trisula-dharini (Holder of the Trident) Akubi Dhriti-nule Kutu-kunti Kutu-kutsi Kirti-kubini Protect, protect me, so-and-so, from all places of terror, from all places of sickness and suffering, from all places of sorrow and distress, from all places of poisonous insects and poisonous drugs, from all places of demonic enchantments and curses, from all places of kings, thieves, water, and fire, from all places of frightening wild beasts, from all places of slander and litigation, from all places of enmity and strife, from all places of evil deeds of body and mind, from all places of the four transgressions of speech, from all places of calamity and danger, and may Vajrapani (a Buddhist Dharma protector), always protect me, so-and-so, and all my family. Svaha. The Buddha spoke another Dharani: Tadyatha Hili hili Mili mili Pisachi-pana Shavari-chili svaha. At that time, the World Honored One finished speaking this sutra. The Bhikshus (Buddhist monks) present, as well as the great assembly, including humans, devas, the Eight Classes of beings (Nagas and other protective deities), and various ghosts and spirits.
