The Sutra of the Great Dharani King Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Shih-hu (Shihu), Grand Master of the Court for Diplomatic Reception, Acting Vice Minister of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, and Dharma Transmission Master, by Imperial Decree from the Western Heaven.

Thus have I heard. At one time, the World-Honored One was in the Jeta Grove (Jetavana) of Anathapindika (Anathapindika-arama) in Shravasti (Shravasti). At that time, Ananda (Ananda) had peacefully spent the rainy season in a secluded place, and upon completion of the retreat, he silently came to the Buddha's assembly. Having arrived, he prostrated himself with his five limbs to the ground, paid homage to the Buddha's feet, and then withdrew to one side, sitting respectfully and awaiting the Buddha's teachings.

At that time, the World-Honored One said to Ananda: 'Ananda, for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings, I will now speak the verses of the Great Dharani (Dharani). You should listen attentively.' At that time, Ananda received the Buddha's command, focused his mind and body, and stood with his palms together.

The Buddha said: 'Ananda, I have a Maha Dharani (Mahadharani), the Great King of Total Retention, which was proclaimed by seventy-seven koti (koti) Tathagatas (Tathagata) in the past, and I also rejoice in it. Ananda, these verses of the Great Dharani can bring great joy to sentient beings, and they will be fully endowed with majestic virtue and power. If there are good men or good women who encounter this Dharani, they should think thus: This Great Dharani is extremely rare and difficult to encounter, just as it is difficult to encounter a Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha (Tathagata Arhat Samyaksambuddha) appearing in the world, and it is as rare to see as an udumbara (udumbara) flower. They should think in this way and offer it with sincere faith.'

At that time, the World-Honored One further said to Ananda: 'If there are good men or good women who, with sincere hearts, receive, uphold, recite, and make offerings to these verses of the Great Dharani, then blades cannot harm them, poison cannot affect them, fire cannot burn them, water cannot carry them away, the laws of the king will not be applied to them, and they will never die prematurely. Even Devas (Deva), humans, Asuras (Asura), Marutas (Maruta), Garudas (Garuda), Gandharvas (Gandharva), Kinnaras (Kinnara), Mahoragas (Mahoraga), Yakshas (Yaksa), Rakshasas (Rakshasa), Pretas (Preta), Pisacas (Pisaca), Kumbhandas (Kumbhanda), Putanas (Putana), Apasmaras (Apasmara), and other such beings who create evil deeds and do not benefit others, will not be able to harm them. Even illusions, evil spells, and other evil practices will not be able to disturb them.' Furthermore,

Ananda, this great Dharani (mantra) chapter and verse, possesses great majestic virtue, power, and immeasurable strength. If there are good men and good women who faithfully receive and uphold it, whether they read or recite it, contemplate and make offerings to it, they will gain knowledge of past lives and know the events of twenty-one lifetimes, and they will never regress from the Bodhi (enlightenment) mind.

Ananda, this great Dharani (mantra), possesses great majestic virtue, has great power and strength, and its merits are immeasurable, surpassing the previous one many times over. It can bring great benefits to sentient beings. If there are good men and good women who generate sincere faith and do not give rise to doubts, and who receive, uphold, and recite this great Dharani, or who provide protection for others, or who provide relief, or who quell disasters, then those people will not be harmed by knives or staves, poison will not affect them, and all evil things will be unable to harm them. If there are also people who seek protection for themselves, and write this Dharani on plain silk and carry it on their body or arms, the merits they obtain will be immeasurable and boundless.

【English Translation】 English version: With relief, that withered tree will revive again. Its roots and leaves will regrow, displaying a coral color. Its flowers and fruits will flourish, delighting people.

Ananda, if there are wise individuals who constantly uphold and repent for the sins committed in their previous lives, and if they sincerely repent, there is no sin that cannot be eradicated. Why is that, Ananda? It is like the sun and moon, whose majestic light is vast and can illuminate the world. Through the power of the Dharani (mantra), even a fall can be reversed. It is also like the four great oceans, where numerous rivers converge, immeasurably deep and vast. Through the power of the Dharani, they can be dried up. As for the earth, boundless and limitless, through the power of the Dharani, it can be divided into thousands of pieces. What sin, then, cannot be extinguished?

Ananda, wherever such great Dharani verses are present, one should respect, revere, believe in, and make offerings to them. One should not be disrespectful or defy them. If there are Nagas (dragons), Yakshas (spirits), Rakshasas (demons), Pretas (hungry ghosts), Pisacas (flesh-eating demons), Kumbhandas (gourd-shaped demons), Putanas (foul-smelling demons), Katanaputanas (extremely foul-smelling demons), Apasmaras (epileptic demons), Vetalas (corpses animated by spirits), humans, and non-humans, who commit evil deeds and act unbeneficially in the world, if they defy or disobey these great Dharani verses, then Dhritarashtra (Guardian King of the East) will appear in extreme anger, his flames gathering and not dispersing, using a hot iron wheel to split their heads into seven pieces, like branches of an Arali tree. Moreover, Indra (Lord of the Devas) will also be greatly enraged, his flames blazing and gathering, using a Vajra (thunderbolt) to shatter their heads into seven pieces, like branches of an Arali tree. Furthermore, Vajrapani (Vajra-bearing Yaksha chief) will also strike their heads with a Vajra, like branches of an Arali tree. Moreover, if they defy these great Dharani verses, even if they dwell in the heavens, they will never be able to obtain the merit water from the Crystal King's palace.

After the Buddha finished speaking this Sutra, Ananda and the assembly, including Devas (gods), Asuras (demi-gods), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), humans, and non-humans, hearing what the Buddha had said, joyfully accepted and practiced it, paid homage to the Buddha, and withdrew.
