【English Translation】 English version Thus I have heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Jetavana Anathapindika-arama in Shravasti (Śrāvastī). He was with a large gathering of Bhikshus (monks). There were also Devas (gods), Asuras (demons), Gandharvas (celestial musicians), and others who came together for the assembly.

At that time, the Buddha said to the Venerable Ananda (Ānanda): 'You should listen carefully. I have a Dharani (mantra) named Kukkura. It has great power, can bring auspiciousness, can break the obstacles caused by Bhutas (spirits) and evil stars, and can eliminate all diseases, such as diseases caused by food, cold and heat illnesses, headaches, migraines, coughs, asthma, even hemorrhoids, gonorrhea, and various sores. Ananda, for those whose lives are about to end, this Dharani can also extend their lives. Therefore, I will now proclaim it to you. Ananda, if someone hears this Dharani, generates firm faith, recites and upholds it, the benefits that person obtains will be immeasurable and boundless.' At that time, the Bhagavan (World-Honored One) then spoke the Dharani, saying:

Tad-yathā Om Ili Mili Cili Mi Vara Kukeili Sri Mati Kundali Nonudbhi Nonudbhi Indra Vajra Ghini Murdhni Sarva Vajra Ghini Murdhni Brahma Sri Svaha Yatha Uru Buddha Sattvanam Viraga Srista

At that time, the World Honored One, having spoken this Dharani, said to Ananda: 'In the place where this Dharani is, I have not seen any Brahma, Mara, Shramana, or Brahmin in the heavens or on earth who dares to violate it. You should receive and uphold it, and speak it for others, so that many people may obtain great benefit.' Ananda, as well as the Devas, Asuras, Gandharvas, and others in the assembly, hearing what the Buddha said, rejoiced, believed, accepted, and withdrew after making obeisance.
