【English Translation】 English version The Dhāraṇī Sutra for Uprooting Suffering and Calamity

Translated under Imperial Order by the Tang Dynasty Tripiṭaka Master Xuanzang

Thus have I heard. At one time, the Bhagavan (Bhagavan, World-Honored One) was in Śrāvastī (Śrāvastī, City of Shravasti), residing in the Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍika-ārāma (Jetavana Anāthapiṇḍika-ārāma, Jeta Grove Anathapindika Park). He was with countless Śrāvakas (Śrāvaka, Hearers), Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (Bodhisattva-mahāsattva, Great Bodhisattvas), and also gods, humans, Asuras (Asura, Demigods), and other immeasurable multitudes surrounding him.

At that time, among the assembly, there was a Bodhisattva named Inexpressible Merit Adornment, who arose from his seat, prostrated at the Buddha's feet, and, with palms joined respectfully, said to the Buddha: 'World-Honored One, in this world, countless sentient beings (Sattva, beings) create various evil karmas due to the causes and conditions of afflictions. They are destined to fall into hells, the realms of hungry ghosts, and the realms of animals, or to suffer severe pain among gods and humans. I beseech you to have compassion and provide expedient means to rescue and deliver them.'

The Buddha said: 'Good man, excellent! Excellent! You are able to have compassion for all sentient beings and make such a request. Listen attentively, listen attentively. I will now briefly explain to you the expedient means for uprooting the suffering of the masses. Good man, there is a Buddha World-Honored One, named Acalanātha-tathāgata-arhat-samyaksaṃbuddha (Acalanātha-tathāgata-arhat-samyaksaṃbuddha, Immovable Tathagata, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened One). For the sake of benefiting and bringing joy to all sentient beings, he speaks a Dhāraṇī (Dhāraṇī, Mantra), instructing the masses to recite it. The Dhāraṇī is:'

Kaṭkaṭani Kaṭkaṭani Ruṭcani Ruṭcani Truṭatrāṭani Truṭatrāṭani Trāsayani Trāsayani Pratighāna Pratighāna Sarva Karma Paramparāṇi Svāhā

'If there are good men and good women who sincerely and respectfully venerate Acalanātha-tathāgata-arhat-samyaksaṃbuddha and uphold this mantra, the five heinous offenses (pañcānantarya, patricide, matricide, killing an Arhat, causing disunity in the Sangha, shedding the blood of a Buddha), the four grave offenses (four root precepts of a Bhikshu: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying), the ten evil deeds (three of body: killing, stealing, sexual misconduct; four of speech: false speech, divisive speech, harsh speech, idle speech; three of mind: greed, hatred, delusion) previously committed, the sins of slandering sages and disparaging the true Dharma, will all be completely eradicated. When approaching the end of their lives, that Immovable Buddha, together with various Bodhisattvas, will appear before them, praising and comforting them, causing them to rejoice. Furthermore, he will tell them: Now I come to welcome you; you should follow me to the Buddha-land to which you belong. After this person's life ends, they will definitely be reborn in the pure Buddha-land of the Immovable Tathagata. Good man, there is also a World-Honored One, named Sarvadurgatipariśodhanarāja-tathāgata-arhat-samyaksaṃbuddha (Sarvadurgatipariśodhanarāja-tathāgata-arhat-samyaksaṃbuddha, King Tathagata Who Purifies All Evil Destinies, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Enlightened One).'

【English Translation】 English version: For the sake of benefiting and bringing happiness to all sentient beings, I will speak the Dhāraṇī, so that all may recite it. The Dhāraṇī is as follows: 'Śuddhani (Purifier), Śuddhani (Purifier), Sarva-pāpa-viśuddhāni (Purifier of all sins), Śuddhe (Pure), Viśuddhe (Completely Pure), Sarva-karma-viśuddhe (Completely Pure of all karma), Svāhā (So be it)' If there are good men or good women who sincerely pay homage to the Tathāgata Arhat Samyak-saṃbuddha (滅惡趣王如來應正等覺, the Thus Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One, King who eradicates evil destinies) and uphold this mantra, they will be able to remember their past lives for 14,000 kalpas (劫, aeons). They will quickly attain Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (無上正等菩提, unsurpassed perfect enlightenment) and will never regress from the Ten Pāramitās (十到彼岸, Ten Perfections). They will always wish to benefit and bring happiness to all sentient beings, and all their practices will not be solely for their own benefit. Wherever they are born, they will always be able to see the Buddha, protect the right Dharma, and be among the assembly of the wise and noble.
