如是我聞。一時佛在日月宮中。與無量大菩薩眾俱。普賢菩薩文殊師利菩薩。陀羅尼自在王菩薩執金剛菩薩。如是等菩薩摩訶薩而為上首。

爾時東方有佛號智炬如來。南方有佛。號金光聚如來。西方有佛號實語如來。北方有佛號雷音王如來。各從本國而來此會。

爾時世尊與諸如來及菩薩眾。共在金幢樓觀之中。各坐寶嚴師子之座。時日月天子來詣佛所。頭頂禮敬諸佛菩薩。以眾妙物而為供養。供養畢已退坐一面。互相謂言。我等云何從諸如來及菩薩所。而得發起一切眾生光明破諸黑闇滿十方智炬陀羅尼耶。以是陀羅尼力故。當令我等能為眾生作大明炬。說是語時。彼諸如來及菩薩眾。即共同聲而說咒曰。

【English Translation】 English version The Jnana-ulka-dharani Sutra, One Scroll Translated under imperial decree by Tripitaka Master Prajna and others of the Tang Dynasty Thus have I heard. At one time, the Buddha was in the Palace of the Sun and Moon, together with a countless great assembly of Bodhisattvas. The foremost among them were Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Manjusri Bodhisattva, Dharani-isvara-raja Bodhisattva, Vajrapani Bodhisattva, and other Bodhisattva-Mahasattvas. At that time, from the east came a Buddha named Jnana-ulka-tathagata (智炬如來). From the south came a Buddha named Kanaka-rasmi-kuta-tathagata (金光聚如來). From the west came a Buddha named Satya-vacana-tathagata (實語如來). From the north came a Buddha named Megha-ghosa-raja-tathagata (雷音王如來). Each came from their own Buddha-land to this assembly. At that time, the World-Honored-One, together with the Tathagatas and the assembly of Bodhisattvas, were together in the golden banner tower, each seated on a jeweled lion throne. Then, the Devas of the Sun and Moon came to the Buddha's abode, bowed in reverence to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and made offerings with various wonderful objects. Having completed their offerings, they retreated and sat to one side, saying to each other, 'How can we obtain from the Tathagatas and Bodhisattvas the Jnana-ulka-dharani (智炬陀羅尼) that can generate the light of all beings, destroy all darkness, and fill the ten directions? Because of the power of this dharani, we should be able to act as great torches of light for sentient beings.' As they spoke these words, those Tathagatas and the assembly of Bodhisattvas together uttered the mantra: sa (borrowing the sound, that is, this character, the upper tone of 'xi nei', but the characters beside it are marked with the departing tone, all following this pattern) ya ti (pronounced 'ta di fan') tan (phrase one) chakshu (upper) da tuo (phrase two) chakshu (upper) bo luo po (upper phrase three) du luo mi tuo (upper phrase four) jia (the upper tone of jia, jia is pronounced 'ji jia fan') luo (upper) tuo (upper phrase five) yi (upper) ti (pronounced 'ta zhi fan') tan (pronounced 'ta deng fan', same below) suo (upper phrase six) su (upper) ra (pronounce it by rolling the tongue according to the original sound of the character 'ra', all those with 'kou bian' (口邊) in the mantra written as 'lu li li lu luo' are

爾時普賢菩薩告日月天子言。諸天子此陀羅尼八十八億諸佛如來。為欲利益諸眾生故之所演說。諸天子優曇缽花猶可易現。此陀羅尼出現甚難。諸天子諸佛出世猶可值遇。此陀羅尼。得值甚難。此陀羅尼猶可易得。誦持之者。斯復轉難。諸天子若欲救拔造五逆罪謗正法人。當受阿毗地獄苦者。可於閑處凈涂其地隨其所辦種種香花而為供養。於三七日中晝夜六時。誦此陀羅尼咒。以是陀羅尼威神力故。令阿毗地獄應時破壞為百千分。是中眾生即得解脫。何況有人在於人間而得聞者。當知是人。則為諸佛及我等菩薩之所護念。諸天子於此所說勿生疑惑。佛說此經已。日月天眾歡喜奉行。

爾時,普賢菩薩告訴日月天子說:『諸位天子,此陀羅尼是八十八億諸佛如來,爲了利益一切眾生而宣說的。諸位天子,優曇缽花尚且容易出現,此陀羅尼出現卻非常難得。諸位天子,諸佛出世尚且可以遇到,此陀羅尼,能夠遇到更是難上加難。此陀羅尼尚且容易得到,誦持此陀羅尼的人,更是難得。』

『諸位天子,如果想要救拔那些造作五逆罪、誹謗正法的人,以及那些應當承受阿鼻地獄痛苦的人,可以在清凈的場所,清凈地塗抹地面,並根據自己的能力,用各種香花來供養。在三七日(二十一天)中,晝夜六時,誦持此陀羅尼咒。憑藉此陀羅尼的威神力,能使阿鼻地獄應時破壞成百千份,其中的眾生立即得到解脫。更何況有人在人間能夠聽聞此陀羅尼呢?應當知道這個人,就會得到諸佛以及我等菩薩的護念。』

『諸位天子,對於我所說的這些,不要產生疑惑。』佛說完這部經后,日月天眾歡喜地信受奉行。

【English Translation】 English version: Tathāgata (Thus Gone One) śya (sentence 35) Namo Viśva-svara (Homage to the Universal Sound) Rāgate Arhatebhyaḥ Tathāgatebhyaḥ (To the passionate, to the worthy ones, to the Tathāgatas) (sentence 36) Siddhyantu mantra padāni (May the paths of mantras be accomplished) (sentence 37) Svāhā (Hail!) (sentence 38)

At that time, Samantabhadra Bodhisattva said to the Sun and Moon Devas: 'O Devas, this Dharani has been spoken by eighty-eight billion Buddhas Tathagatas for the sake of benefiting all sentient beings. O Devas, the Udumbara flower may still be easily seen, but the appearance of this Dharani is extremely rare. O Devas, the appearance of Buddhas in the world may still be encountered, but encountering this Dharani is even more difficult. This Dharani may still be easily obtained, but those who recite and uphold it are even rarer.'

'O Devas, if you wish to rescue those who have committed the five rebellious acts and slandered the True Dharma, and those who are destined to suffer the pain of Avici Hell, you may purify a place, cleanse the ground, and offer various incense and flowers according to your ability. For three seven-day periods (twenty-one days), recite this Dharani mantra six times day and night. By the power of this Dharani, the Avici Hell will be destroyed into hundreds of thousands of pieces, and the beings within will be liberated immediately. How much more so for those who hear this Dharani in the human realm? Know that such a person will be protected and remembered by all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, including myself.'

'O Devas, do not have any doubts about what I have said.' After the Buddha spoke this Sutra, the Sun and Moon Devas joyfully accepted and practiced it.
