The Method of the Great Cloud Sutra Rain-Seeking Altar
If there is a severe drought and one wishes to pray for rain, an altar should be made in an open area. Remove tiles, debris, and all impure objects. Set up a blue curtain and hang blue banners. Smear and wipe with fragrant mud to create a square altar. Draw a seven-jeweled pond in the center of the altar. In the pond, draw the palace of the Sea Dragon King. In the Dragon Palace, draw the scene of Śākyamuni Tathāgata (釋迦牟尼如來) preaching the Dharma. To the right of the Buddha, draw Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva (觀自在菩薩). To the left of the Buddha, draw Vajrapāṇi Bodhisattva (金剛手菩薩) and other attendants. In front of the Buddha on the right, draw the Wheel-Cover Dragon King, lord of the three thousand great thousand worlds. In front of the Buddha on the left, draw the two Dragon Kings Nanda (難陀) and Upananda (跋難陀). On the four sides of the altar, draw one Dragon King each using cow dung juice. In the east, draw one Dragon King with one body and three heads, measuring three cubits in length, surrounded by attendants. In the south, draw one Dragon King with one body and five heads, measuring five cubits in length, along with various attendants. In the west, draw one Dragon King with one body and seven heads, measuring seven cubits in length, surrounded by attendants. In the north, draw one Dragon King with one body and nine heads, measuring nine cubits in length, surrounded by attendants. All are in thick, dark blue-black clouds. The lower half of their bodies is in the shape of a snake, with their tails in the pond. The upper half of their bodies is in the shape of a Bodhisattva, all with their palms together, emerging from the pond. At the four corners of the altar, place four clean water bottles. According to one's ability, food, fruits, etc., should all be dyed blue. Arrange offerings with sincere and pure hearts, burn incense, and scatter blue flowers. Everything used in the Dharma practice should be made blue. If the person praying for rain is an ordained Bhikṣu (比丘), they should fully observe the precepts. If they are a layperson, they should observe the Eight Precepts. When performing the ritual, eat the 'three white foods' (dairy products). Bathe in fragrant water every day and wear new, clean blue clothes. On the west side of the altar, use blue objects as a seat. Anoint the hands with fragrance, and first use the three secrets (body, speech, and mind) to bless oneself and protect the altar. Place this Great Cloud Sutra on the table. Generate great compassion for all sentient beings, sincerely request the blessings of all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, and be devout day and night.

《大云經》祈雨壇法 English version: Sincerely recite this Mahāmegha-sūtra (Great Cloud Sutra). It can be recited in turns by two, three, or even seven people, and the sound of reciting the sutra should not be interrupted. In times of drought, if you recite this Mahāmegha-sūtra in accordance with the Dharma in this way, or after one day, two days, or even seven days, sweet rain will surely fall. If the disaster is severe and it does not rain, perform (the sutra recitation for rain) again, and sweet rain will surely fall. Even if the tides of the great ocean exceed their limits, if you perform according to the rituals of this sutra, it will be invariably effective. You should vow to dedicate the merits generated from reciting the sutra to all the Nāgas (dragons), wishing them to be free from all suffering, and to generate the unsurpassed anuttarā-bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment), in order to bring sweet rain to all sentient beings.
