佛說園生樹經
西天譯經三藏朝奉大夫試鴻臚卿傳法大師臣施護奉 詔譯
如是我聞:
一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,與苾芻眾俱。是時佛告諸苾芻言:「汝等當知,彼三十三天中有一大樹名為園生,其樹盤根及五由旬,高百由旬,所有枝葉覆五十由旬。彼天子眾依時往彼樹下游觀,其樹即生半努缽羅舍。時諸天子見是事已,即生歡喜適悅快樂。其後非久,復生尸啰拏缽羅舍,諸天子眾依時往彼遊觀,轉增適悅快樂。又復非久即生寶網,以覆其上而為莊嚴。彼天子眾依時往彼樹下游觀,轉復增于適悅快樂。又復非久生叉啰迦,彼天子眾依時往彼樹下游觀,見是事已,轉復增于適悅快樂。又復非久生俱砧摩羅迦,彼天子眾依時往彼樹下游觀,轉復增于適悅快樂。又復非久生迦迦寫,彼天子眾依時遊觀,轉增適悅。又復非久彼園生樹滿樹開華,其華清凈異香殊妙,微風吹動,其香馥郁五十由旬,大風所吹滿百由旬,復有殊妙光明照於八十由旬。其樹既開華已,彼天子眾見樹開華,轉倍於前生大快樂,于夏四月居其樹下適悅娛樂。」
佛告諸苾芻:「汝等當知,彼園生樹有如是事,妙華異香人所愛樂;諸聲聞人亦復如是。彼樹初生半努缽羅舍時,即如聲聞人初發信心出家向道;複次彼樹生尸啰拏缽羅舍時,即如聲聞人剃除鬚髮、被袈裟衣,成聲聞相;複次彼樹生寶網時,即如聲聞人厭離諸欲、舍不善法,遠離種種思惟分別,獲得初禪離生喜樂定。
「複次彼樹生叉曪迦時,即如聲聞人外相善寂、內心靜住,離諸思惟、定心一想,獲得二禪定生喜樂定。
「複次彼樹生俱砧摩羅迦時,即如聲聞人離諸喜愛,身得輕安適悅妙樂,獲得第三禪離喜妙樂定。
「複次彼樹生迦迦寫時,即如聲聞人斷除一切憂苦喜樂住平等心,獲得第四禪舍念清凈定。
「複次彼樹開敷妙華,異香遍聞,人所愛樂時,即如聲聞人諸漏已盡、非漏隨增,證無學果不受後有,人天瞻敬受大供養,同彼華開其事如是。」
佛告諸苾芻:「汝等當知,彼三十三天諸天子眾,各各色相殊異嚴好種種莊飾,居善法堂集會圍繞,聽受帝釋天主宣說妙法。汝諸苾芻!各獲果證清凈圓滿,梵行具足一切見敬,圍繞世尊聽受妙法,同彼天眾亦復如是。」
爾時諸苾芻聞佛宣說園生樹已,各各心生歡喜踴躍,信受奉行
現代漢語譯本: 一時,佛陀在舍衛國的祇樹給孤獨園,與眾多比丘在一起。當時,佛陀告訴眾比丘說:『你們應當知道,在三十三天中有一棵大樹,名為園生樹。這棵樹的根盤踞五由旬,高一百由旬,枝葉覆蓋五十由旬。天上的眾天子按時到這棵樹下觀賞遊玩。這棵樹就生出半努缽羅舍。當時,眾天子看到這種情況,就生起歡喜、舒適和快樂。不久之後,又生出尸啰拏缽羅舍,眾天子按時到那裡遊玩觀賞,更加感到舒適和快樂。又過不久,樹上生出寶網,覆蓋在樹上作為裝飾。眾天子按時到樹下觀賞遊玩,更加感到舒適和快樂。又過不久,生出叉啰迦,眾天子按時到樹下觀賞遊玩,看到這種情況,更加感到舒適和快樂。又過不久,生出俱砧摩羅迦,眾天子按時到樹下觀賞遊玩,更加感到舒適和快樂。又過不久,生出迦迦寫,眾天子按時到那裡遊玩觀賞,更加感到舒適。又過不久,這棵園生樹滿樹開花,花朵清凈,香氣獨特而美妙,微風吹動,香氣飄散五十由旬,大風吹動,香氣飄散一百由旬,還有奇妙的光明照耀八十由旬。這棵樹開花之後,眾天子看到樹開花,比之前更加快樂,在夏季四個月里,他們在這棵樹下享受舒適和快樂。』 佛陀告訴眾比丘:『你們應當知道,這棵園生樹有這樣的特點,花朵美妙,香氣獨特,令人喜愛;各位聲聞人也是如此。這棵樹初生半努缽羅舍時,就像聲聞人初發信心出家修行;其次,這棵樹生出尸啰拏缽羅舍時,就像聲聞人剃除鬚髮、穿上袈裟,成為聲聞的形象;其次,這棵樹生出寶網時,就像聲聞人厭離各種慾望、捨棄不善的法,遠離各種思慮分別,獲得初禪的離生喜樂定。 『其次,這棵樹生出叉曪迦時,就像聲聞人外表安詳寂靜、內心平靜安住,遠離各種思慮,一心專注,獲得二禪的定生喜樂定。 『其次,這棵樹生出俱砧摩羅迦時,就像聲聞人遠離各種喜愛,身體得到輕安舒適的妙樂,獲得三禪的離喜妙樂定。 『其次,這棵樹生出迦迦寫時,就像聲聞人斷除一切憂愁痛苦和喜樂,安住于平等心,獲得四禪的舍念清凈定。 『其次,這棵樹開滿美妙的花朵,獨特的香氣傳遍四方,令人喜愛時,就像聲聞人各種煩惱都已斷盡,不再有新的煩惱產生,證得無學果位,不再受後世的輪迴,受到人天瞻仰敬重,接受盛大的供養,如同這棵樹開花一樣。』 佛陀告訴眾比丘:『你們應當知道,三十三天的眾天子,各自的容貌都非常特別,裝飾得非常美好,居住在善法堂中,被眾人圍繞,聽受帝釋天主宣說妙法。你們各位比丘!各自獲得果位的證悟,清凈圓滿,梵行具足,受到一切人的尊敬,圍繞在世尊身邊聽受妙法,也如同那些天眾一樣。』 當時,眾比丘聽聞佛陀宣說園生樹的道理后,各自心中生起歡喜踴躍,信受奉行。
English version: Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park in Shravasti, together with a large assembly of monks. At that time, the Buddha told the monks, 'You should know that in the Thirty-three Heavens there is a great tree called the Garden-born Tree. The roots of this tree extend for five yojanas, it is a hundred yojanas tall, and its branches and leaves cover fifty yojanas. The heavenly beings go to the tree at the appropriate times to enjoy and observe. Then the tree produces half-nupala shoots. When the heavenly beings see this, they feel joy, comfort, and happiness. Not long after, it produces shiranapala shoots, and the heavenly beings go there to enjoy and observe, feeling even more comfort and happiness. After a while, a jeweled net appears on the tree, covering it as an ornament. The heavenly beings go to the tree to enjoy and observe, feeling even more comfort and happiness. After a while, it produces ksharakas, and the heavenly beings go to the tree to enjoy and observe, and seeing this, they feel even more comfort and happiness. There is also a wonderful light that shines for eighty yojanas. After the tree has blossomed, the heavenly beings see the tree in bloom and feel even greater joy than before. For four months in the summer, they stay under the tree, enjoying comfort and happiness.' The Buddha told the monks, 'You should know that the Garden-born Tree has these characteristics: its flowers are beautiful, its fragrance is unique, and it is loved by people. The same is true for the Shravakas. When the tree first produces half-nupala shoots, it is like a Shravaka who first develops faith and leaves home to practice the Way. Next, when the tree produces shiranapala shoots, it is like a Shravaka who shaves his head and beard, puts on the monastic robe, and takes on the appearance of a Shravaka. Next, when the tree produces a jeweled net, it is like a Shravaka who is disgusted with all desires, abandons unwholesome dharmas, and is free from various thoughts and discriminations, attaining the joy and happiness of the first dhyana, which is born of detachment.' 'Next, when the tree produces ksharakas, it is like a Shravaka who is outwardly peaceful and inwardly calm, free from all thoughts, and focused on one point, attaining the joy and happiness of the second dhyana, which is born of concentration.' 'Next, when the tree produces kutimmalakas, it is like a Shravaka who is free from all attachments, whose body experiences the wonderful joy of lightness and comfort, attaining the wonderful joy of the third dhyana, which is born of detachment from joy.' 'Next, when the tree produces kakashyas, it is like a Shravaka who has cut off all sorrow, suffering, joy, and happiness, and dwells in equanimity, attaining the purity of the fourth dhyana, which is free from thought.' 'Next, when the tree is covered with beautiful blossoms, its unique fragrance spreads everywhere, and it is loved by people, it is like a Shravaka who has exhausted all defilements, no new defilements arise, and who has attained the fruit of non-learning, no longer subject to future rebirth, and is revered by humans and gods, receiving great offerings, just like the tree in bloom.' The Buddha told the monks, 'You should know that the heavenly beings of the Thirty-three Heavens each have unique appearances, are adorned beautifully, live in the Hall of Good Dharma, are surrounded by others, and listen to the wonderful Dharma preached by the Lord Indra. You monks! Each of you has attained the realization of the fruit, is pure and complete, has fulfilled the pure conduct, is respected by all, and surrounds the World Honored One to listen to the wonderful Dharma, just like those heavenly beings.' At that time, the monks, having heard the Buddha explain the Garden-born Tree, each felt joy and elation in their hearts, and accepted and practiced it.
