The Sutra of King Mandhata

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. At that time, Ananda was contemplating in seclusion: 'There are few people in the world who are slightly weary of the five desires, but many who do not know satisfaction until death.' After midday, Ananda went to the Buddha, bowed to him, and then said to the Buddha: 'I was contemplating in seclusion, and I realized that there are few people in the world who are slightly weary of the five desires, but many who do not know satisfaction until death.'

The Buddha said: 'Ananda, it is indeed as you say. There are few people in the world who are slightly weary of the five desires, but many who do not know satisfaction until death. Why is this so? In the past, there was a king named Mandhata, who was born from his mother's crown, hence the name Mandhata. Later, he became a Chakravartin king, and the east, west, south, and north all belonged to him. He had seven treasures: the golden wheel, the white elephant, the dark blue horse, the bright moon pearl, the jade maiden, the wise minister, and the guiding military minister. As a Chakravartin king, he possessed these seven treasures. The king was benevolent and virtuous, practiced the Dharma, and did not disturb the people. He had a thousand sons, all of whom were handsome, highly talented, brave, and strong. The entire four continents submitted to him. After ruling for thousands of years, he thought to himself: 'I possess the four continents, the people are prosperous, the grain is abundant, and the people are wealthy.' The king further thought: 'I have a thousand sons, all of whom are handsome, incomparably talented, brave, and strong. How wonderful it would be if the heavens would rain gold and silver coins for me for seven days and seven nights.' The gods heard his words and, according to his wish, rained gold and silver coins for seven days and seven nights. The king, seeing the heavens rain gold and silver coins for seven days and seven nights, was overjoyed and enjoyed himself with everyone for thousands of years. The king thought to himself: 'The four continents are all under my rule, I have a thousand sons, the seven treasures are all before me, I have obtained everything I desired, and the heavens do not take away my wishes, but also rain gold and silver coins for me for seven days and seven nights.' King Mandhata heard that there was a great and prosperous country called Jambudvipa in the south, and he wanted to go there. As soon as he had this thought, he flew there with his seven treasures and four kinds of troops. Jambudvipa was 280,000 miles away, and the king there surrendered to King Mandhata upon seeing him. King Mandhata had done good deeds in his past lives, which is why he received such blessings.

'After staying in Kuru for thousands of years, the king thought again: 'I have a great country in the west called Kuru, which is 320,000 miles wide and long. I have seven treasures, the heavens rained gold and silver coins for me for seven days and seven nights, I have a thousand sons, all of whom are handsome, incomparably talented, brave, and strong, and I also have Jambudvipa in the south, which is 280,000 miles wide.' The king heard that there was a country called Aparagodaniya in the east, where the people were prosperous, the grain was cheap, and the country was very happy. The king wanted to go there, and as soon as he had this thought, he flew there with his seven treasures and four kinds of troops. The king and people there surrendered to him. The king then ruled the country with the Dharma.

'After thousands of years, the king thought again: 'I have Jambudvipa, which is 280,000 miles wide, I have Kuru, which is 320,000 miles wide, and I have Aparagodaniya, which is 360,000 miles wide.' The king heard that there was Uttarakuru in the north, where the world was peaceful and the people were prosperous. The king wanted to go to that country, where there was no poverty, no strong or weak, no slaves or masters, and everyone was equal. 'Let my people and officials eat the natural rice and wear the natural clothes and various treasures.' As soon as the king had this thought, he flew with his seven treasures and four kinds of troops to the border of Uttarakuru. From afar, he saw that the ground was as green as a kingfisher's feather. The king asked his ministers, 'Do you see that the ground is as green as a kingfisher's feather?' The ministers replied, 'Yes, we see it.' The king said, 'This is the land of Uttarakuru.' As the king continued forward, he saw that the ground was as white as snow. The king asked his ministers again, 'Do you see that the ground is white?' The ministers replied, 'Yes, we see it.' The king said, 'This is the naturally produced rice of Uttarakuru, you should all eat it together.' As they continued forward, they saw various jeweled trees, trees with hundreds of kinds of clothing, gold, silver, jade rings, and necklaces hanging on the trees. The king asked his ministers, 'Do you see these jeweled trees?' The ministers replied, 'Yes, we see them.' The king said, 'These are the trees with hundreds of kinds of clothing, gold, silver, jade rings, and necklaces. You should all go and take them to wear.' The king then arrived in Uttarakuru, and the people there all surrendered to him.

'After ruling Uttarakuru for thousands of years, the king thought to himself: 'I have Jambudvipa, I have Kuru, I have Aparagodaniya, and I have Uttarakuru, which is 400,000 miles wide.' The king wanted to ascend Mount Sumeru, the king of the four jeweled mountains, to the place where Sakra, the king of the Trayastrimsa Heaven, resided. As soon as the king had this thought, he flew with his seven treasures and his officials to Mount Sumeru, and then entered the palace of Sakra. Sakra, seeing King Mandhata coming from afar, rose to greet him and said, 'I have long heard of your merits and have wanted to see you for a long time.'

English version: 'The benevolent one has come, how wonderful!' Then (King Venda-kaja) pulled (the Buddha) to sit together, offering half of his seat to King Venda-kaja. As soon as he sat down, (King Venda-kaja) looked around at the heavens, seeing jade maidens attending, their palaces adorned with seven treasures: gold, silver, lapis lazuli, crystal, coral, amber, and giant clamshells. Upon seeing this, he thought: 'I possess Jambudvipa, Kuru, Aparagodaniya, and Uttarakuru, and in my palace, it rained gold and silver coins for seven days and seven nights.' King Venda-kaja then thought to himself: 'If the heavenly king Sakra were to die, I would want to take his place and rule the heavens, just as I enjoyed ruling the world.' As soon as the king had this thought, his divine power vanished, and he immediately returned to the human realm, where he fell ill and was bedridden. The king's ministers and officials gathered around his bed, asking: 'Do you have any last words?' The king said: 'If anyone asks you, 「What are the king's last words?」 tell them: 「When the king was alive, he ruled the four continents, and it rained gold and silver coins for seven days and seven nights. The king had a thousand sons, possessed seven treasures, and all could fly. The king went to the Trayastrimsa Heaven, where the heavenly king Sakra rose to greet him, inquired after his well-being, and offered him half of his seat. Yet, he still harbored the desire to take Sakra's position. As soon as he had this thought, he immediately returned to the human realm, where he fell ill and became weak. He regretted, saying: 『People are never satisfied until death, and those who know contentment are few.』」』 The scriptures say that even if it rained gold and silver coins for seven days and seven nights, it would not satisfy people. The benefit is small, but the fault is very serious. Wise people should contemplate this matter. Even having half of Sakra's seat was not enough. People who practice the path seek to attain Srotapanna, Sakadagami, Anagami, Arhat, Pratyekabuddha, and only upon attaining Buddhahood will they be satisfied.' The Buddha told Ananda: 'The King Venda-kaja at that time was my past life.' Having said this, Ananda was very pleased and bowed to the Buddha.
