English version: This is the 'Mula-sarva-dharma Sutra' from the Taisho Tripitaka, Volume 01, No. 0059. The Buddha Speaks the Mula-sarva-dharma Sutra (Separately translated from the Madhyama Agama) Translated by Upasaka Zhi Qian of the Yuezhi Kingdom of Wu Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. The Buddha said to the monks, 'Listen to me speak about the roots of all dharmas.' The monks replied, 'Yes, Venerable One.' The World-Honored One said, 'If any outsiders or those of other schools come and ask, 'What is the root of dharmas?' you should answer, 'Desire is the root of all dharmas.' 'What is practice?' 'Again is practice.' 'What is the common destination?' 'Feeling is the common destination.' 'What is the cause of existence?' 'Mindfulness is the cause of existence.' 'What is the path of clarity?' 'Reflection is the path of clarity.' 'What is the foremost?' 'Samadhi is the foremost.' 'What is the highest?' 'Wisdom is the highest.' 'What is steadfast?' 'Liberation is steadfast.' 'What is the ultimate?' 'Nirvana is the ultimate.' 'Thus, monks! Desire is the root of all dharmas, again is the practice of all dharmas, feeling is the common destination of all dharmas, mindfulness is the cause of existence of all dharmas, reflection is the path of clarity of all dharmas, samadhi is the foremost of all dharmas, wisdom is the highest of all dharmas, liberation is the steadfast of all dharmas, and nirvana is the ultimate of all dharmas.' 'Monks! You should learn these things, and always have the thought of leaving home, the thought of impermanence, the thought of extreme suffering, the thought that suffering is not the body, the thought of loathing food, the thought of impurity, the thought of death, the thought that there is no joy in all the world, the thought of knowing the right and wrong of the world, and the thought of distinguishing the existence and non-existence of the world. The changes and final destination of the joys that the world is accustomed to and pursues should be understood with right view as they are. Monks! Mindfulness of these things is for cutting off desire and entering right wisdom to reach the end of suffering.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, everyone joyfully practiced it.
