聞如是:
一時,婆伽婆在釋䩭瘦迦維羅衛城尼拘盧園中,與大比丘眾俱受歲。彼時,大女人瞿曇彌至世尊所,到已禮世尊足,卻住一面。大女人瞿曇彌卻住一面已,白世尊曰:「唯,世尊!可有是處,女人得為四沙門果不?令女人於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道不?」「止!瞿曇彌!不須爾。女人不得於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道。汝瞿曇彌!常可剃頭被袈裟,至竟行清凈梵行。」於是大女人瞿曇彌為世尊所制,禮世尊足,繞世尊已,離世尊還。
彼時諸比丘為世尊作衣,世尊不久至釋䩭瘦當受歲。受歲竟,三月作衣竟已成衣,與衣缽俱游諸人間。
彼大女人瞿曇彌聞諸比丘為世尊作衣,世尊不久當至釋䩭瘦受歲,受歲竟三月作衣已成衣,與衣缽俱遊人間。彼大女人瞿曇彌聞已,至世尊所,到已禮世尊足,卻住一面。彼大女人瞿曇彌卻住一面已,白世尊曰:「唯,世尊!可有是處,令女人得四沙門果,令女人於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道不?」「止!瞿曇彌!不須爾。女人不應於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道。汝瞿曇彌!剃頭被著袈裟,至竟行清凈梵行。」於是大女人瞿曇彌已被世尊再所制,禮世尊足,繞世尊,離世尊還。
彼時世尊在釋䩭瘦受歲,受歲已竟,三月作衣已成衣,與衣缽俱游於人間行。大女人瞿曇彌,聞世尊在釋䩭瘦受歲,受歲已竟,三月作衣已成衣,與衣缽俱至人村間行。大女人瞿曇彌聞已,與諸老女人俱隨世尊后。隨世尊后,彼時世尊,次第遊行到那婆提,住那婆提耆尼舍。彼時大女人瞿曇彌至世尊所,到已禮世尊足,卻住一面。大女人瞿曇彌卻住一面已,白世尊曰:「唯,世尊!可有是處,令女人得四沙門果不?令女人於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道不?」「止!瞿曇彌!不須爾。女人不得於此法律出家、棄家學道。汝瞿曇彌!剃頭被著袈裟,至竟清凈行梵行。」於是大女人瞿曇彌為世尊三所制,禮世尊足,繞世尊已,離世尊而還。
彼時大女人瞿曇彌,不洗足,身有塵土,身瞪懵,啼泣在門前立。尊者阿難,遙見大女人瞿曇彌不洗足,身有塵土,身瞪懵,啼泣門前立,見已作是言:「何以故,瞿曇彌!不洗其足,身有塵土,身瞪懵,啼泣在門前立?」「如是。唯,尊者阿難!女人不得於此法律,不得信樂出家、棄家學道。」
「汝瞿曇彌住此間,我當往至世尊所,到已當白世尊。」於是尊者阿難至世尊所,到已禮世尊足,卻住一面。尊者阿難卻住一面已,白世尊曰:「唯,世尊!可有是處,令女人得四沙門果,令女人於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道不?」
「此阿難!止,不須爾。女人不得於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道。此阿難!若於此法律女人得出家,信樂出家、棄家學道者,梵行者不得久存。猶若,阿難!有家多有女人少有男人,寧廣有產不?」
「不也。唯,世尊!」
「如是,阿難!若於此法律女人得出家,信樂出家、棄家學道者,梵行者不得久存。猶若,阿難!成就稻田、成就麥田,中間若有雹雨為不饒益,彼因彼雹雨故令彼敗壞。如是,阿難!若有於此法律女人信樂出家、棄家學道者,梵行者不得久存

English version: Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Nigrodha Park in Kapilavastu of the Sakyas, together with a large assembly of monks, observing the rainy season retreat. At that time, the great woman Gotami came to the World Honored One, and after arriving, she bowed at the feet of the World Honored One and stood to one side. After the great woman Gotami had stood to one side, she said to the World Honored One: 'World Honored One, is it possible for women to attain the four fruits of a Sramana? To allow women to have faith and joy in this Dharma, to leave home and practice the Way?' 'Stop, Gotami! There is no need for that. Women cannot have faith and joy in this Dharma, to leave home and practice the Way. You, Gotami, should shave your head, wear the robes, and ultimately practice the pure Brahma-faring.' Thereupon, the great woman Gotami, being restrained by the World Honored One, bowed at the feet of the World Honored One, circumambulated the World Honored One, and departed from the World Honored One. At that time, the monks were making robes for the World Honored One, and the World Honored One would soon go to Sakya to observe the rainy season retreat. After the retreat, the robes were completed in three months, and with the robes and bowl, he traveled among the people. You, Gotami, should shave your head, wear the robes, and ultimately practice the pure Brahma-faring.' Thereupon, the great woman Gotami, having been restrained by the World Honored One for the third time, bowed at the feet of the World Honored One, circumambulated the World Honored One, and departed from the World Honored One. At that time, the great woman Gotami, without washing her feet, with dust on her body, looking dazed, stood weeping at the door. The Venerable Ananda, seeing from afar that the great woman Gotami had not washed her feet, with dust on her body, looking dazed, stood weeping at the door, and having seen this, he said: 'Why, Gotami! Ananda, if women were to leave home in this Dharma, having faith and joy in leaving home and practicing the Way, then the Brahma-faring would not last long. Just like, Ananda, if a household has many women and few men, would it have abundant property?' 'No, World Honored One!' 'It is so, Ananda! If women were to leave home in this Dharma, having faith and joy in leaving home and practicing the Way, then the Brahma-faring would not last long. Just like, Ananda, if there are mature rice fields and mature wheat fields, and in between there is hail, it would not be beneficial, and because of that hail, they would be ruined. It is so, Ananda! If there are women in this Dharma who have faith and joy in leaving home and practicing the Way, then the Brahma-faring would not last long.'

「唯,世尊!大女人瞿曇彌,是有所益。世尊母命終,因此長養乳哺。」
「如是,阿難!如是,阿難!此大女人瞿曇彌多有所益,我母命終,此以乳哺長養我。此阿難!我亦饒益大女人瞿曇彌,彼依我,歸於我、歸於法、歸比丘僧,于佛無疑、於法無疑、于眾無疑,于苦、習、盡、道無疑。具足信、戒、聞、施,具足智慧,棄于殺離殺、不與取、邪淫妄言,至棄飲酒離飲酒。此阿難!若有人依因於人,歸於佛、歸於法、歸比丘僧,不疑佛、不疑法、不疑比丘僧,不疑苦、習、盡、道,具足信、戒、聞、施,具足智慧,棄殺離殺、不與取、邪淫妄言,至棄飲酒離飲酒。此阿難!此人有所作,盡命衣被床臥病瘦醫藥,于彼人不能報。
「複次,阿難!女人當施設八重法,令女人不得犯,女人當盡命具此戒。猶若,阿難!巧水底行若巧弟子,入于深水中而施羅網,于中護水截水不令流。如是,阿難!女人者當行八重法,令女人不得犯,女人當盡命與戒俱。云何為八?此阿難!比丘尼當從比丘求索具足。是為,阿難!我施設女人初重法,令女人不得犯,令女人當盡命與戒俱。此阿難!比丘尼當從比丘半月當受禮節。是為,阿難!我施設女人二重法,令女人不得犯,令女人盡命當與戒俱。此阿難!若無比丘者,比丘尼不得受歲。坐是為,阿難!我施設女人三重法,令女人不得犯,令女人盡命當與戒俱。阿難!若比丘尼若至受歲,當與二僧俱,以三事受歲見聞知。是為,阿難!我施設女人四重法,令女人不得犯,令女人當盡命與此戒俱。此阿難!若比丘不容,比丘尼不得問比丘契經、毗尼、阿毗曇;阿難!若比丘聽,比丘尼當問比丘契經、毗尼、阿毗曇。是為,阿難!我施設女人五重法,令女人不得犯,令女人當盡命與此戒俱。此阿難!若比丘尼不得譏比丘見聞知;阿難!比丘當譏比丘尼見聞知。是為,阿難!我施設女人六重法,令女人不得犯,令女人盡命與此戒俱。此阿難!若比丘尼,有所犯僧伽婆尸沙,當於二僧中當半月掃灑。是為,阿難!我施設女人七重法,令女人不得犯,令女人當盡命與此戒俱。阿難!若比丘尼受具足至百歲,當向初受具足比丘接足禮之,當恭敬承事。是為,阿難!我施設女人八重法,令女人不得犯,令女人盡命當與此戒俱。是為,阿難!我為女人施設此八重法,令女人不得犯,令女人盡命與此戒俱。此阿難!大女人瞿曇彌!當與此八重法俱者,當於此法律學道,當受具足為比丘尼。」
於是尊者阿難聞世尊所說,善思惟念,誦習受持,禮世尊足,繞世尊,離世尊而還至大女人瞿曇彌所。到已,語大女人瞿曇彌作是言:「已得,瞿曇彌!女人當於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道。瞿曇彌!世尊作是言:『當行八重法,女人不得犯,女人當盡命與此戒俱。』云何為八?瞿曇彌!比丘尼當從比丘求受具足。是為,瞿曇彌!世尊為女人初施設此一重法,令女人不得犯,盡命當與此戒俱。至,此瞿曇彌!若比丘尼受具足百歲,當向具足比丘接足作禮,當恭敬禮事。是為,瞿曇彌!世尊為女人施設此八重法,令女人不得犯,令女人當盡命與此戒俱。是為,瞿曇彌!世尊為女人施設此八重法,令女人不得犯,令女人當盡命與此戒俱。此瞿曇彌!能與此八重法俱者,當於此法律學道受具足,為比丘尼。」
「如是,尊者阿難!當聽我喻
「是的,世尊!大女人瞿曇彌確實有恩於我。世尊的母親去世后,是她養育我,用乳汁哺育我。」 「是的,阿難!是的,阿難!這位大女人瞿曇彌確實對我恩重如山,我的母親去世后,是她用乳汁哺育我長大。阿難,我也對大女人瞿曇彌有所助益,她依止我,歸依我、歸依法、歸依比丘僧,對佛無疑、對法無疑、對僧無疑,對苦、集、滅、道無疑。她具足信、戒、聞、施,具足智慧,捨棄殺生,遠離殺生;捨棄不與取,遠離不與取;捨棄邪淫,遠離邪淫;捨棄妄語,遠離妄語;乃至捨棄飲酒,遠離飲酒。阿難,如果有人因為某人而歸依佛、歸依法、歸依比丘僧,不懷疑佛、不懷疑法、不懷疑比丘僧,不懷疑苦、集、滅、道,具足信、戒、聞、施,具足智慧,捨棄殺生,遠離殺生;捨棄不與取,遠離不與取;捨棄邪淫,遠離邪淫;捨棄妄語,遠離妄語;乃至捨棄飲酒,遠離飲酒。阿難,這個人所做的一切,即使盡其一生供養衣物、床鋪、臥具、醫藥,也無法報答那人的恩情。 「再者,阿難!女人應當設立八項重法,使女人不得違犯,女人應當盡其一生遵守這些戒律。就像,阿難!一個擅長潛水的人,或者一個熟練的弟子,進入深水中設定羅網,在水中保護水流不讓其流失。同樣,阿難!女人應當奉行八項重法,使女人不得違犯,女人應當盡其一生遵守這些戒律。這八項是什麼呢?阿難,比丘尼應當從比丘那裡請求受具足戒。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第一項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,比丘尼應當每半個月從比丘那裡接受教誡。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第二項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,如果沒有比丘,比丘尼不得受歲。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第三項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,如果比丘尼要受歲,應當在兩個僧團中,以見聞知三事受歲。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第四項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,如果比丘不允許,比丘尼不得向比丘請教契經、毗尼、阿毗曇;阿難,如果比丘允許,比丘尼應當向比丘請教契經、毗尼、阿毗曇。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第五項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,比丘尼不得批評比丘的見聞知;阿難,比丘應當批評比丘尼的見聞知。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第六項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,如果比丘尼犯了僧伽婆尸沙罪,應當在兩個僧團中進行半個月的掃灑。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第七項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,如果比丘尼受具足戒一百年,應當向初受具足戒的比丘行接足禮,應當恭敬承事。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的第八項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。這是,阿難!我為女人設立的這八項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。阿難,大女人瞿曇彌!如果能遵守這八項重法,就可以在此法律中學習修行,可以受具足戒成為比丘尼。」 於是,尊者阿難聽聞世尊所說,善加思惟,誦習受持,禮拜世尊的腳,繞世尊一週,離開世尊回到大女人瞿曇彌那裡。到達后,告訴大女人瞿曇彌說:「瞿曇彌,已經可以了!女人可以在此法律中信樂出家,捨棄家庭修行。瞿曇彌,世尊這樣說:『應當奉行八項重法,女人不得違犯,女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。』這八項是什麼呢?瞿曇彌,比丘尼應當從比丘那裡請求受具足戒。這是,瞿曇彌!世尊為女人設立的第一項重法,使女人不得違犯,盡其一生應當遵守此戒。乃至,瞿曇彌!如果比丘尼受具足戒一百年,應當向初受具足戒的比丘行接足禮,應當恭敬承事。這是,瞿曇彌!世尊為女人設立的第八項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。這是,瞿曇彌!世尊為女人設立的這八項重法,使女人不得違犯,使女人應當盡其一生遵守此戒。瞿曇彌,如果能遵守這八項重法,就可以在此法律中學習修行,受具足戒,成為比丘尼。」 「是的,尊者阿難!請聽我的比喻。」
'Yes, Venerable Sir! The great woman Gotami has indeed been of great benefit. When the Blessed One's mother passed away, it was she who raised me, nourishing me with her milk.' 'So it is, Ananda! So it is, Ananda! This great woman Gotami has been of great benefit, for when my mother passed away, it was she who nourished me with her milk. And Ananda, I too have been of benefit to the great woman Gotami, for she has taken refuge in me, taken refuge in the Dharma, taken refuge in the Sangha, has no doubt about the Buddha, no doubt about the Dharma, no doubt about the Sangha, no doubt about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path. She is endowed with faith, virtue, learning, generosity, and wisdom. She has abandoned killing, abstaining from killing; abandoned taking what is not given, abstaining from taking what is not given; abandoned sexual misconduct, abstaining from sexual misconduct; abandoned false speech, abstaining from false speech; and even abandoned intoxicants, abstaining from intoxicants. Ananda, if someone, because of another, takes refuge in the Buddha, takes refuge in the Dharma, takes refuge in the Sangha, has no doubt about the Buddha, no doubt about the Dharma, no doubt about the Sangha, no doubt about suffering, its origin, its cessation, and the path, is endowed with faith, virtue, learning, generosity, and wisdom, has abandoned killing, abstaining from killing; abandoned taking what is not given, abstaining from taking what is not given; abandoned sexual misconduct, abstaining from sexual misconduct; abandoned false speech, abstaining from false speech; and even abandoned intoxicants, abstaining from intoxicants. Ananda, whatever this person does, even if they were to provide clothing, bedding, lodging, and medicine for the rest of their life, they could not repay the kindness of that person.' 'Furthermore, Ananda! Women should establish eight weighty rules, which women should not transgress, and women should uphold these precepts for the rest of their lives. Just as, Ananda, a skilled diver or a skilled disciple enters deep water and sets a net, protecting the water and preventing it from flowing away. Similarly, Ananda, women should practice eight weighty rules, which women should not transgress, and women should uphold these precepts for the rest of their lives. What are these eight? Ananda, a bhikkhuni should request full ordination from a bhikkhu. This, Ananda, is the first weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, a bhikkhuni should receive instruction from a bhikkhu every half-month. This, Ananda, is the second weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, if there is no bhikkhu, a bhikkhuni should not observe the rains retreat. This, Ananda, is the third weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, if a bhikkhuni is to observe the rains retreat, she should do so in the presence of both Sanghas, with three things: seeing, hearing, and knowing. This, Ananda, is the fourth weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, if a bhikkhu does not permit it, a bhikkhuni should not ask a bhikkhu about the Suttas, the Vinaya, or the Abhidhamma; Ananda, if a bhikkhu permits it, a bhikkhuni should ask a bhikkhu about the Suttas, the Vinaya, or the Abhidhamma. This, Ananda, is the fifth weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, a bhikkhuni should not criticize a bhikkhu's seeing, hearing, or knowing; Ananda, a bhikkhu should criticize a bhikkhuni's seeing, hearing, or knowing. This, Ananda, is the sixth weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, if a bhikkhuni commits a Sanghadisesa offense, she should perform penance for half a month in both Sanghas. This, Ananda, is the seventh weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, if a bhikkhuni has been fully ordained for a hundred years, she should pay homage to a bhikkhu who has been fully ordained for even a single day, and should respectfully serve him. This, Ananda, is the eighth weighty rule I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. These, Ananda, are the eight weighty rules I have established for women, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives. Ananda, great woman Gotami! If you can abide by these eight weighty rules, you may study and practice in this Dharma and discipline, and receive full ordination as a bhikkhuni.'" Then, Venerable Ananda, having heard what the Blessed One had said, carefully considered it, recited it, and memorized it, paid homage to the Blessed One's feet, circumambulated the Blessed One, and departed from the Blessed One to return to the great woman Gotami. Having arrived, he said to the great woman Gotami, 'Gotami, it is done! Women may now, in this Dharma and discipline, find joy in going forth from home into homelessness. Gotami, the Blessed One said, 'You should practice eight weighty rules, which women should not transgress, and which women should uphold for the rest of their lives.' What are these eight? Gotami, a bhikkhuni should request full ordination from a bhikkhu. This, Gotami, is the first weighty rule that the Blessed One has established for women, which women should not transgress, and which they should uphold for the rest of their lives. And so on, Gotami! If a bhikkhuni has been fully ordained for a hundred years, she should pay homage to a bhikkhu who has been fully ordained for even a single day, and should respectfully serve him. 。智慧聞喻已知其義,猶若,尊者阿難!若剎利女、若婆羅門女、若工師女、若庶人女,極澡浴涂香,著白凈衣,或有人作是念憐愍,欲有所益、欲令安隱,或以優缽羅華鬘,或以瞻匐華鬘、婆師華鬘、阿提牟多華鬘授與之,彼以兩手受之舉著頭上。如是,尊者阿難!世尊施設八重法,我當盡命頂受之。」
「汝大女人瞿曇彌!當於此法律學道,受具足為比丘尼。」
於是大女人瞿曇彌,於後時共諸老宿比丘尼眾,與諸比丘尼上尊長老皆與俱,共行梵行,共至尊者阿難所。到已,禮尊者阿難足,卻住一面。大女人瞿曇彌卻住一面已,白尊者阿難曰:「尊者阿難!當此比丘尼是上尊長老,皆行梵行,此諸比丘是新成,學道未久,入此法律未久,此諸比丘,當向此諸比丘尼如長老,當爲作禮承事。」
「止,瞿曇彌!我當往至世尊所,到已當以此言白世尊。」今隨尊者阿難。於是尊者阿難至世尊所,到已禮世尊足,卻住一面。尊者阿難卻住一面已,白世尊曰:「唯,世尊!今日此大女人瞿曇彌,與諸比丘尼俱是上尊長老,皆行梵行,來至我所,到已禮我足,卻住一面。大女人瞿曇彌卻住一面已,語我曰:『唯,尊者阿難!當知此諸比丘尼是上尊長老,皆行梵行,此諸比丘是新成,學道不久,於此法未久,令此諸比丘當向此諸比丘尼如長老,如長老當為作禮承事。』」「止,阿難!當護此言,汝莫復作是言。汝阿難!當知如我所知,一句不可解,況復作如斯言?此阿難!女人不於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道者,婆羅門居士當以衣敷地,以衣敷地已當作是言:『此諸沙門有戒行,沙門當在上行,沙門精進甚奇,我等當於長夜得義饒益。』汝阿難!若女人不於此法律信樂棄家,出家學道,婆羅門居士當敷頭髮著地,當作是言:『令沙門在上行,令沙門在上住,沙門戒行甚難,我等當於此長夜得義饒益。』若阿難!女人不於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道者,婆羅門居士當在道路,手執種種囊滿中物,當作是言:『此諸賢!當持此隨意飲食,我等於長夜得義饒益安隱。』此阿難!若女人不於此法律信樂出家,棄家學道者,婆羅門居士,當信彼諸沙門戒行,當以手抱之,入著己家種種施與,『隨諸賢取用,我等於長夜得義饒益安隱樂。』此阿難!若女人不於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道者,如此日月極有威神、極有所能,彼戒行沙門所有光明能勝於彼,況復弊惡異學所能及?阿難!若女人不於此法律信樂出家、棄家學道者,遺法當住千歲,今已五百歲減,余有五百歲。此阿難!無有是處,不可容,女人終不得五事:不得成如來、無所著、等正覺,及轉輪王,不得為釋,不得為魔,不得為梵,無有是處。可有是處,男子得五事:得成如來、無所著、等正覺,得為轉輪王,得為釋、魔、梵者,可有是處。」

If a woman from a Kshatriya family, a Brahmin family, an artisan family, or a commoner family, after bathing and applying fragrant oils, puts on clean white clothes, and someone, out of compassion, wants to help them and make them secure, and gives them a garland of blue lotuses, a garland of champak flowers, a garland of vasika flowers, or a garland of atimukta flowers, they would receive it with both hands and place it on their head. Today, this great woman Gotami, along with the Bhikkhunis, who are all venerable elders and practice the holy life, came to me, bowed to my feet, and stood to one side. Ananda, if women do not have faith in this Dharma to leave home and practice, Brahmin householders should spread their clothes on the ground, and after spreading them, should say: 'These Samanas have precepts, the Samanas should walk on them, the Samanas' diligence is very rare, we should gain benefit in the long night.' Ananda, if women do not have faith in this Dharma to leave home and practice, Brahmin householders should spread their hair on the ground, and should say: 'Let the Samanas walk on it, let the Samanas dwell on it, the Samanas' precepts are very rare, we should gain benefit in the long night.' Ananda, if women do not have faith in this Dharma to leave home and practice, Brahmin householders should stand on the road, holding bags full of various items, and should say: 'Venerable ones! Please take these and eat as you wish, we will gain benefit and security in the long night.' Ananda, if women do not have faith in this Dharma to leave home and practice, Brahmin householders should believe in the precepts of those Samanas, should hold them in their arms, bring them into their homes, and give them various offerings, 'Venerable ones, please take and use as you wish, we will gain benefit, security, and happiness in the long night.' Ananda, if women do not have faith in this Dharma to leave home and practice, just like the sun and moon, which have great power and ability, the light possessed by those Samanas who have precepts can surpass them, let alone what those evil heretics can compare to? Ananda, if women do not have faith in this Dharma to leave home and practice, the true Dharma will remain for a thousand years, now five hundred years have passed, and five hundred years remain. Ananda, there is no such reason, it is impossible, women can never achieve five things: they cannot become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Samyaksambuddha, they cannot become a Chakravartin king, they cannot become Sakra, they cannot become Mara, they cannot become Brahma, there is no such reason. However, men can achieve five things: they can become a Tathagata, an Arhat, a Samyaksambuddha, they can become a Chakravartin king, they can become Sakra, Mara, and Brahma, this is possible.' The Buddha spoke thus. Venerable Ananda, having heard what the Buddha said, was joyful and delighted.
