English version: This is the 'Sanguipañcasīla Maitrī Vairāgya Guṇa Sūtra' (Sutra on the Merits of Taking the Three Refuges, Five Precepts, Loving-kindness, and Renunciation) from the Taisho Tripitaka, Volume 01, No. 0072. The translator of this sutra is unknown, and it is now attached to the records of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. The Buddha said to the elder Anathapindika: 'In the distant past, there was a Brahmin named Piroma, who was very wealthy and had many treasures. When he gave alms, he used eighty-four thousand gold bowls filled with crushed silver, eighty-four thousand silver bowls filled with crushed gold, eighty-four thousand gold and silver washbasins, eighty-four thousand cows with gold and silver covered horns, eighty-four thousand jade maidens adorned with ornaments, eighty-four thousand beds covered with various colored cloths, eighty-four thousand sets of clothing, eighty-four thousand elephants and horses with gold and silver saddles, and eighty-four thousand houses for alms; he also gave alms at the four city gates, giving whatever people desired; and he also gave a house to the Sangha. The merit of the above almsgiving is not as great as the merit of taking the Three Refuges. The reason for this is that those who take the Three Refuges give fearlessness to all sentient beings. Therefore, taking refuge in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, the merit is immeasurable.' 'The merit of the above almsgiving and taking the Three Refuges is not as great as the merit of taking the Five Precepts. Those who take the Five Precepts have complete merit, and their merit is even more superior. The merit of the above almsgiving and taking the Three Refuges and Five Precepts is not as great as the merit of having loving-kindness towards sentient beings for the time it takes to snap one's fingers. The merit of the above almsgiving, taking the Three Refuges and Five Precepts, and having loving-kindness towards sentient beings is not as great as the merit of generating the thought of the unattractiveness of all worldly things. The reason for this is that the merit of generating the thought of the unattractiveness of all worldly things can enable practitioners to extinguish the suffering of birth and death and ultimately attain Buddhahood, so its merit is the most superior.' At that time, the elder, having heard what the Buddha said, joyfully practiced it.
