English version: The Sutra of the Elder's Rewards for Giving Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. At that time, there was an elder named Anathapindika who came to where the Buddha was, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, and sat down to one side. The Buddha said to the elder, 'If someone gives excellent food as alms, according to the Dharma, whether giving it personally or regularly, they will not obtain great merit. What do you think is the reason for this? It is because their minds seek wealth and happiness. If someone does not seek clothing, food, bedding, wealth, or happiness, but gives excellent food as alms according to the Dharma, they will obtain great wealth, and their wives, children, servants, and family members will be filial and serve them. What do you think is the reason for this? It is because they give alms for the sake of all sentient beings.' The Buddha said, 'Elder, in the past, there was an elder Brahmin named Mi Luo Mo, who held a large almsgiving ceremony. He used 80,000 gold plates filled with gold dust to give alms; he also used 80,000 silver plates filled with silver dust to give alms; he also used 80,000 gold plates filled with silver dust to give alms; he also used 80,000 silver plates filled with gold dust to give alms; he also used 80,000 copper plates filled with various fine and precious foods to give alms; he also used 80,000 milk cows to give alms; he also used 80,000 young girls, adorned with fine clothes, pearl necklaces, and various ornaments, to give alms; he also used 80,000 gold beds, silver beds, ivory beds, and wooden beds, placing various fine and soft mattresses on them, to give alms; he also used 80,000 carriages and chariots, covered with white felt and Kausika cloth, adorned with various decorations, to give alms.' The Buddha said, 'Elder, the almsgiving of Mi Luo Mo in this way is not as meritorious as someone giving food to a person with right view. The merit obtained is greater than the previous merit. What do you think is the reason for this? It is because this person will not fall into wrong views.' The Buddha said, 'Elder, the almsgiving of Mi Luo Mo in this way is not as meritorious as someone giving food to a person with right view. Giving to one person with right view is not as meritorious as giving to one hundred people with right view. The merit obtained is greater than the previous merit.' The Buddha said, 'Elder, the almsgiving of Mi Luo Mo in this way is not as meritorious as someone giving food to a person with right view. Giving to one person with right view is not as meritorious as giving to one hundred people with right view. Then, after the World Honored One spoke these words, he told the householder, 'In the past, the great giving assembly held by the Brahmin Mi Luomo was not by other Shramanas or Brahmins, but by myself.' At that time, after the householder Anathapindika heard the Buddha's teaching, he had no self-view, person-view, sentient being-view, or life-span-view. He was free from deluded thoughts, his mind became pure, and he attained the patience of extinction.
