English version The Sutra of the Eight Precepts Fast Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Layman Juqu Jingsheng of the Song Dynasty

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. At that time, the World Honored One told the Bhikkhus: 'I will now speak of the Holy Eight Precepts Fast. Listen carefully, listen carefully, and contemplate well, I will now speak.' They replied: 'Yes, World Honored One!' At that time, those Bhikkhus received the teachings from the Buddha.

The World Honored One told them: 'O Bhikkhus! If a son or daughter of a good family who has faith wishes to know the Holy Eight Precepts Fast, then teach so-and-so to say: 『Like an Arhat, for the rest of my life I will not kill, nor will I teach others to kill, I will have no resentment, I should feel shame, and with a compassionate heart, I will have pity for all living beings. I, named so-and-so, am taught by the Arhat, from today onwards, according to my will, I will no longer kill, I will have no resentment, I will always feel shame, and with a compassionate heart, I will have pity for all living beings. Like an Arhat, for the rest of my life I will not steal, I will be generous, nor will I teach others to steal, I will always enjoy solitude. I, named so-and-so, am taught by the Arhat, according to my will, I will no longer steal, I will always be generous, and I will enjoy solitude. Like an Arhat, for the rest of my life I will not engage in impure conduct, I will always cultivate pure conduct, pure and without defilement, and I will find joy in it. I, named so-and-so, am taught by the Arhat, from now on I will no longer engage in sexual misconduct, I will remain pure and without defilement. Like an Arhat, for the rest of my life I will not speak falsely, I will always practice truthfulness, the most honored and respected, and I will be respected by all elders and the world. I, named so-and-so, am taught by that Arhat, from now on I will no longer speak falsely, nor will I teach others to speak falsely, I should practice truthfulness, as a disciple of the World Honored One, I will not speak falsely.』

English version: 'Just like an Arhat, one does not drink alcohol. I, named so-and-so, from this day forward, whether I desire it or not, will not drink alcohol, nor will I encourage others to drink alcohol. Just like an Arhat, one does not break the fast for the duration of their life, eating at any time. I, named so-and-so, for this one day and night, whether I desire it or not, will not break the fast, nor will I encourage others to break the fast, eating at any time. Just like an Arhat, one does not sit on a high and comfortable bed for the duration of their life. I, named so-and-so, for this one day and night, will not sit on a high and wide bed, nor will I encourage others to sit on one. Just like an Arhat, one does not engage in singing, dancing, and entertainment for the duration of their life, nor does one wear ornaments or use fragrant perfumes on the body. For this one day and night, I will not engage in singing, dancing, and entertainment, nor will I wear ornaments or use fragrant perfumes on the body.' 'Such is the practice of the Noble Eight Precepts, and the merits within these eight precepts are immeasurable. It cannot be said how much merit, how much virtue, how much reward there is; such numerous merits are incalculable. Monks! Just as five great rivers all converge at one place, namely the Ganges, the Yamuna, the Indus, the Aciravati, and the Sarayu, the flow of their waters is immeasurable. It cannot be said how much water there is, how many bottles of water, how many thousands or hundreds of thousands of bottles of water. Likewise, the merit of the Noble Eight Precepts is immeasurable. It cannot be said how much merit, how much virtue, how much reward there is; this great merit is incalculable.' At that time, the monks, having heard what the Buddha had said, joyfully practiced accordingly.
