English version The Sutra on Wrong Views (Name of the translator lost, now appended to the Eastern Jin Record) Thus have I heard: At one time, the Venerable Ananda was dwelling in the Kalandaka Bamboo Grove in Rajagriha. Not long after the World Honored One's Parinirvana, there was a certain heretic, an old friend of the Venerable Ananda, who, after his midday meal, while strolling, came to the Venerable Ananda's dwelling. Having arrived, he exchanged greetings with the Venerable Ananda. After the greetings, he sat down to one side. Having sat down to one side, that heretic said to the Venerable Ananda, 'I have some questions I would like to ask; please allow me to ask them.' 'Ask away, worthy one!' The heretic, having heard this, began to ask. 'This Ananda! That Shramana Gautama! He abandons wrong views, eliminates wrong views, and does not assert whether the world is eternal or not eternal, whether the world is finite or infinite, whether the life and the body are the same or different, whether there is a Tathagata after death or not, whether there is this or not this, whether there is not or there is an end to life. This Ananda! That Shramana Gautama! Does he know wrong views, should he know them in this way?' 'This Brahmin! That World Honored One possesses wisdom, possesses knowledge and insight, is a Tathagata, unattached, and fully enlightened. He abandons wrong views, eliminates wrong views, and does not assert whether the world is eternal, up to whether there is no end to life. This Brahmin! That World Honored One possesses wisdom, possesses knowledge and insight. Regarding wrong views, the Tathagata, unattached, and fully enlightened, should know them in this way.' 'This Ananda! That Shramana Gautama! He abandons wrong views, eliminates wrong views, and does not assert whether the world is eternal, up to whether there is no end to life.'

English version: 'What is this, Ananda? Does that ascetic Gotama know this wrong view? How does he know it?' 'This Brahmin, that Blessed One has wisdom and vision, is a Tathagata, unattached, a fully enlightened one. He has abandoned wrong views, removed wrong views, and does not declare that the world is permanent until the end of life. This Brahmin, this wrong view is corresponding, equally corresponding, it is in this way that it tends, in this way that it arises, and in the next life. This Brahmin, that Blessed One knows in this way, he has knowledge and vision, is a Tathagata, unattached, a fully enlightened one, he knows wrong views, he should know in this way.' 'Therefore, Ananda, I now take refuge in you.' 'Brahmin, do not take refuge in me, as I have taken refuge in the Blessed One, you should also take refuge in him.' 'Therefore, Ananda, I now take refuge in that Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. I am a lay follower of that Blessed One, from today I will abstain from killing, today I take refuge in the Venerable one.' Ananda spoke thus. That ascetic of wrong livelihood, having heard what the Venerable Ananda said, was joyful and delighted.
