English version Taisho Tripitaka Volume 01, No. 0095, The Ant Simile Sutra

The Buddha Speaks the Ant Simile Sutra

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Shi Hu, Minister of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, Great Master of Dharma Transmission, bestowed with Purple Robe, under Imperial Decree, from the Western Heaven

At that time, the World Honored One emitted great light, illuminating everywhere, and then told the assembly of monks, 『You should know! At one time, there was a gathering of ants, from which smoke arose at night and fire blazed during the day. A Brahmin, upon seeing this, said, 『If there were someone wielding a sharp knife, they would surely be able to break apart and scatter their gathering.』 Having said this, he then saw a large turtle, and the Brahmin also said, 『If there were someone wielding a sharp knife, they would surely be able to destroy it.』 Next, he saw some jellyfish-like insects, then a leech, then some Asisuna insects, then a large snake, then a Ruotuo Bota insect, then a [昝-人+幾] Ge Wata insect. Upon seeing these insects, the Brahmin said the same as before. Finally, he saw a large dragon, and the Brahmin said, 『What is the meaning of what I have seen? Only the World Honored Buddha can fully understand.』 He immediately went to a monk, explained the above matters in detail, and said, 『Monk! Please ask the Buddha about this matter for me, so that my doubts may be resolved. If the Buddha speaks, I shall remember it. Why is that? Monk! I have not seen among the gods, humans, ascetics, or Brahmins in this world anyone who can ask the Buddha about this meaning, and therefore cannot resolve my doubts.』

『Then that monk, according to his words, came to me. Having arrived, he bowed at my feet and stood to one side.』

English version: Having stated the above, he further inquired: 『As the Brahmin saw the ant colony, what does that signify? Smoke rising at night and fire burning during the day, what do these mean? Also, seeing a large turtle, a jellyfish, a leech, an Asisuna insect, a large snake, a Ruotabata insect, a [昝-人+幾]Gakavata insect, and a great dragon, what do all these visions represent? Who is that Brahmin? And why is he called the one who shatters with a sharp knife? I beseech the Buddha to explain.』 『Monks!』 I then said to that monk: 『The ant colony represents the five aggregates of all sentient beings. The smoke rising at night represents the various thoughts and deliberations that arise in sentient beings. The fire burning during the day represents the actions of body and speech that arise from those thoughts and deliberations. The large turtle represents the five hindrances that defile the mind. The jellyfish represents anger. The leech represents stinginess and jealousy. The Asisuna insect represents the five objects of desire. The snake represents ignorance. The Ruotabata insect represents doubt. The [昝-人+幾]Gakavata insect represents pride. The dragon represents the Arhats. The Brahmin represents the Tathagata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. The sharp one represents the wise person. The knife represents wisdom. Shattering represents the initiation of diligent and superior practice.』 『Monks! What do you think? The visions he saw, in short, represent the five aggregates of all sentient beings, the Kalala and so on, born from the impure substances of parents, composed of the four great elements, a false appearance, coarse, inferior, weak, accumulating suffering, and ultimately subject to destruction. Yet, sentient beings are unable to realize this, and throughout the day and night, they engage in various thoughts and deliberations, their actions of body and speech are not virtuous, they are covered by the five hindrances, they are attached to the five objects of desire, they increase their ignorance, they give rise to pride, they are indecisive about the sacred teachings, anger, stinginess, and jealousy arise in every moment, and they do not seek liberation.』

Therefore, the Tathagata, the Arhat, the Perfectly Enlightened One, wishes to encourage all wise beings to generate diligent practice, cultivate wisdom, sever all afflictions, and strive to attain the holy fruit. You, Bhikshus! Having exhausted all defilements and attained the Arhat fruit, are therefore said to be like dragons. Furthermore, Bhikshus! The Buddhas, the World Honored Ones of the past and future, out of compassion and for the benefit and happiness of all sentient beings, wishing them to sever all afflictions and strive to attain the holy fruit, extensively proclaim this meaning to all Sravakas. Today, I am also like the Buddhas, and for this reason, I am proclaiming it to you. You, Bhikshus! Remember this matter, and in quiet places such as wildernesses, empty dwellings, under trees in the mountains, in caves and hermitages, carefully contemplate and observe this meaning. Do not be negligent and generate a mind of regression, and also turn to explain and teach others, universally enabling them to practice and obtain great benefit and happiness. At that time, after the World Honored One had spoken thus to the Bhikshus, all the Bhikshus completely accepted it with faith.
