English version The Sutra of the Buddha's Discourse on Being Carried Away by Water Foam

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan was by the side of the Ganges River at Ayodhya (a place of observation built by King Pasenadi), together with a large assembly of five hundred bhikkhus. At that time, there was a large mass of foam being carried away by the water. The World-Honored One, having seen it, said to the bhikkhus, 'Do you see this mass of foam being carried away by the Ganges River?'

The bhikkhus replied, 'Yes, World-Honored One!'

The World-Honored One said, 'This mass of foam, if there is a person with eyes, who carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns it, that person, having seen it, carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns it, will find it to be empty and without substance, without coming or going, and not firm. What can be relied upon in this mass of water foam? Likewise, all forms, whether past, future, or present, whether coarse or fine, whether far or near, if there is a person with eyes who carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns them, that person, having seen them, carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns them, will find them to be empty and without substance, without coming or going, and not firm. What firmness is there in this aggregate of form? For example, like bubbles appearing in the summer rain, some arise and some perish, if there is a person with eyes who carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns them, that person, having seen them, carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns them, will find them to be empty and without substance, without coming or going, and not firm, just like this water foam, what firmness is there? Likewise, the feelings in this body, whether past, future, or present, whether coarse or fine, whether good or bad, whether far or near, if there is a person with eyes who carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns them.'

English version: He has observed, contemplated, and discerned, realizing that (the feeling aggregate) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this feeling aggregate? It is like the midday sun in summer, without any clouds, where the mirage is intense. A person with good eyesight observes, contemplates, and discerns it. Having observed, contemplated, and discerned, he realizes that (the mirage) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this mirage? Likewise, all perceptions, whether past, future, or present, gross or subtle, good or bad, far or near, a person with good eyesight observes, contemplates, and discerns them. Having observed, contemplated, and discerned, (he realizes that the perception aggregate) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this perception aggregate? It is like a person who leaves a city or village, seeking a solid vessel, and goes into a large forest. If he sees a banana tree growing lush and beautiful, which people are pleased to see, growing alone without branches or leaves, and if he cuts its root into three or four pieces, peeling off the skin from each piece, he cannot find anything substantial, let alone anything solid. A person with good eyesight carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns it. Having observed, contemplated, and discerned, (he realizes that the banana tree) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this banana tree? Likewise, all volitional formations, whether past, future, or present, gross or subtle, good or bad, far or near, a person with good eyesight observes, contemplates, and discerns them. Having observed, contemplated, and discerned, he realizes that (the volitional formations aggregate) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this volitional formations aggregate? It is like a clever magician or a magician's apprentice who performs illusions in front of a crowd. A person with good eyesight carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns it. Having observed, contemplated, and discerned, (he realizes that the illusion) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this illusion? Likewise, all consciousness, whether past, future, or present, gross or subtle, good or bad, far or near, a person with good eyesight carefully observes, contemplates, and discerns it. He has observed, contemplated, and discerned, realizing that (the consciousness aggregate) is empty, without coming or going, and not solid. What solidity is there in this consciousness aggregate?

English version: He has observed, contemplated, and discerned that (the consciousness aggregate) is empty and without substance, with no coming or going, and not firm. What firmness can this consciousness aggregate have? At that time, the World Honored One spoke in verse: 'Form' is like a mass of foam, 'feeling' is like a water bubble, 'Perception' is like a wild horse in a summer field, 'volition' is like a banana tree (hollow and unreal), 'Consciousness' is like an illusion, this is the most excellent teaching. If one can observe carefully, contemplate and discern, one will find that (the five aggregates) are empty and without substance. If one can observe in this way, carefully examine this body, this is the teaching of great wisdom, one can extinguish these three dharmas (form, feeling, perception), and be able to abandon and remove form (aggregate), this volition (aggregate) is also like this, like the illusory magic of a magician. At that time, the monks, having heard what the Buddha said, joyfully practiced accordingly.
