佛說戒德香經
東晉天竺三藏竺曇無蘭譯
聞如是:
一時,佛游舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。時,賢者阿難閑居獨思:「世有三香,一曰根香,二曰枝香,三曰華香,是三品香唯隨風香不能逆風,寧有雅香隨風逆風者乎?」賢者阿難獨處思惟此義所歸,不知所趣,即從坐起往詣佛所,稽首佛足下,長跪叉手而白佛言:「我獨處思惟,世有三香,一曰根香,二曰枝香,三曰華香,此三品香唯能隨風不能逆風,寧有雅香隨風逆風者乎?」
佛告阿難:「善哉!善哉!誠如汝問,有香真正隨風逆風。」
阿難白佛:「愿聞其香。」
佛言:「若於郡國縣邑村落,有善男子善女人,修行十善,身不殺、盜、淫,口不妄言、兩舌、惡口、綺語,意不嫉妒、恚、癡,孝順父母,奉事三尊,仁慈道德威儀禮節,東方無數沙門梵志歌頌其德,南西北方四維上下沙門梵志咸歌其德:『某郡國土縣邑村落,有善男子善女人,奉行十善敬事三寶,孝順仁慈道德恩義不失禮節
現代漢語譯本 如是我聞: 一時,佛陀在舍衛國的祇樹給孤獨園。當時,賢者阿難獨自靜思:『世間有三種香,一是根香,二是枝香,三是花香,這三種香都只能順風飄散,不能逆風。難道就沒有一種高雅的香氣可以順風逆風都飄散嗎?』賢者阿難獨自思考這個問題的含義,不知其究竟,便從座位起身前往佛陀處,向佛陀的足部頂禮,長跪合掌對佛陀說:『我獨自思考,世間有三種香,一是根香,二是枝香,三是花香,這三種香都只能順風飄散,不能逆風。難道就沒有一種高雅的香氣可以順風逆風都飄散嗎?』 佛陀告訴阿難:『好啊!好啊!正如你所問,確實有香可以真正地順風逆風飄散。』 阿難問佛:『希望聽聞這種香。』 佛陀說:『如果在郡、國、縣、邑、村落,有善男子善女人,修行十善,身體不殺生、不偷盜、不邪淫,口不說謊、不挑撥離間、不說惡語、不說花言巧語,心裡不嫉妒、不嗔恚、不愚癡,孝順父母,侍奉三寶,仁慈道德,威儀禮節,東方無數的沙門、婆羅門歌頌他們的德行,南西北方、四維上下,沙門、婆羅門都歌頌他們的德行:『某郡、國土、縣、邑、村落,有善男子善女人,奉行十善,敬事三寶,孝順仁慈,道德恩義,不失禮節』
English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Sravasti. At that time, the venerable Ananda, while in seclusion, pondered: 'In the world, there are three kinds of fragrance: one is root fragrance, the second is branch fragrance, and the third is flower fragrance. These three kinds of fragrance can only travel with the wind and cannot go against it. Is there not a noble fragrance that can travel both with and against the wind?' The venerable Ananda, while pondering the meaning of this question, not knowing its true nature, arose from his seat and went to the Buddha, bowed at the Buddha's feet, knelt down, and with palms joined, said to the Buddha: 'I was pondering alone, and in the world, there are three kinds of fragrance: one is root fragrance, the second is branch fragrance, and the third is flower fragrance. These three kinds of fragrance can only travel with the wind and cannot go against it. Is there not a noble fragrance that can travel both with and against the wind?' The Buddha said to Ananda: 'Excellent! Excellent! As you have asked, there is indeed a fragrance that can truly travel with and against the wind.' Ananda asked the Buddha: 'I wish to hear about this fragrance.' The Buddha said: 'If in a district, country, county, town, or village, there are good men and good women who practice the ten good deeds, whose bodies do not kill, steal, or engage in sexual misconduct, whose mouths do not lie, slander, speak harshly, or engage in frivolous talk, whose minds are free from jealousy, anger, and ignorance, who are filial to their parents, serve the Three Jewels, are benevolent, virtuous, and observe proper decorum, countless ascetics and Brahmins in the east sing praises of their virtue, and ascetics and Brahmins in the south, west, north, and all directions sing praises of their virtue: 'In such and such a district, country, county, town, or village, there are good men and good women who practice the ten good deeds, respect the Three Jewels, are filial, benevolent, virtuous, and righteous, and do not fail in proper decorum.'
。』是香名曰隨風逆風靡不周照,十方宣德一切蒙賴。」
佛時頌曰:
「雖有美香花, 不能逆風熏, 不息名栴檀, 眾雨一切香。 志效能和雅, 爾乃逆風香, 正士名丈夫, 普熏於十方。 木蜜及栴檀, 青蓮諸雨香, 一切此眾香, 戒香最無上。 是等清凈者, 所行無放逸, 不知魔徑路, 不見所歸趣。 此道至永安, 此道最無上, 所獲斷穢源, 降伏絕魔網。 用上佛道堂, 升無窮之慧, 以此宣經義, 除去一切弊。」
佛告阿難:「是香所布,不礙須彌山川天地,不礙四種地水火風,通達八極上下亦然,無窮之界咸歌其德。一身不殺生,世世長壽,其命無橫。不盜竊者,世世富饒又不妄遺財寶常存,施為道根。不淫色者,人不犯妻,所在化生蓮華之中。不妄言者,口氣香好言輒信之。不兩舌者,家常和合無有別離。不惡口者,其舌常好言辭辯通。不綺語者,人聞其言莫不咨受宣用為珍。不嫉妒者,世世所生眾人所敬。不瞋恚者,世世端正人見歡喜。除愚癡者,所生智慧靡不咨請,舍于邪見常住正道,從行所得各自然生,故當棄邪從其真妙。」
佛說如是。時,諸比丘聞之歡喜,作禮而去
現代漢語譯本:'這香的名字叫做隨風和逆風都能飄散,沒有不能照到的地方,十方世界都宣揚它的功德,一切都蒙受它的恩惠。' 佛陀當時說了偈頌: '縱然有美好的香花,也不能逆風飄散;不息香名為栴檀,能勝過一切香。志向和品性如果能平和優雅,就能逆風飄香;正直的人被稱為大丈夫,他的美德能普熏十方。木蜜香和栴檀香,青蓮花等各種香,所有這些香中,戒香最為殊勝。這些清凈的人,行為沒有放縱,不知道魔的路徑,也看不到歸宿。這條道路通向永恒的安樂,這條道路最為殊勝,所獲得的能斷絕污穢的根源,降伏並斬斷魔的羅網。用它來登上佛道的殿堂,提升無窮的智慧,用它來宣講經義,除去一切弊端。' 佛陀告訴阿難:'這種香所散佈的範圍,不會被須彌山、山川、天地所阻礙,也不會被地、水、火、風這四種元素所阻礙,它能通達八方上下,乃至無窮的境界,都讚頌它的美德。一個人如果不殺生,世世代代都會長壽,生命不會遭受橫禍。不偷盜的人,世世代代都會富饒,而且不會遺失財寶,財富常存,佈施是修道的根本。不邪淫的人,他的妻子不會被侵犯,他所投生之處都在蓮花之中。不妄語的人,口氣芬芳,說的話都會被人相信。不兩舌的人,家庭和睦,沒有離別。不惡語傷人的人,他的舌頭總是能說出美好的言辭,辯才無礙。不說綺語的人,人們聽到他的話沒有不接受並珍視的。不嫉妒的人,世世代代都會受到眾人的尊敬。不嗔怒的人,世世代代都會相貌端正,讓人見了歡喜。去除愚癡的人,他所擁有的智慧,人們沒有不請教的,他會捨棄邪見,常住正道,從修行中獲得的果報,都會自然而生,所以應當捨棄邪道,追隨真理的奧妙。' 佛陀說完這些話,當時,眾比丘聽了之後都非常歡喜,行禮后離去。
English version: 'This fragrance is named 'flowing with the wind and against the wind,' it pervades everywhere, and the ten directions proclaim its merits, with all benefiting from its grace.' The Buddha then spoke in verse: 'Though there are beautiful fragrant flowers, they cannot spread against the wind; the fragrance called sandalwood is unsurpassed, surpassing all other fragrances. If one's will and character are peaceful and elegant, then one can spread fragrance against the wind; an upright person is called a great being, and their virtue pervades the ten directions. The fragrance of wood honey and sandalwood, the fragrance of blue lotuses and other flowers, among all these fragrances, the fragrance of precepts is the most supreme. Those who are pure, whose actions are without indulgence, do not know the path of demons, nor do they see their destination. This path leads to eternal peace, this path is the most supreme, what is gained cuts off the source of defilement, subdues and destroys the net of demons. Use it to ascend the hall of the Buddha's path, elevate infinite wisdom, use it to proclaim the meaning of the scriptures, and remove all evils.' The Buddha told Ananda: 'The range of this fragrance is not obstructed by Mount Sumeru, mountains, rivers, heaven, or earth, nor is it obstructed by the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind. It can reach the eight directions, above and below, and even to infinite realms, all praising its virtue. A person who does not kill will have longevity in every life, and their life will not suffer misfortune. A person who does not steal will be wealthy in every life, and will not lose their treasures, wealth will always remain, and giving is the root of the path. A person who does not engage in sexual misconduct will not have their spouse violated, and they will be born in a lotus flower. A person who does not lie will have fragrant breath, and their words will be believed. A person who does not speak divisively will have a harmonious family, without separation. A person who does not speak harshly will always have a tongue that speaks beautiful words, with eloquence. A person who does not speak frivolously, people will listen to their words and cherish them. A person who is not jealous will be respected by all in every life. A person who is not angry will have a beautiful appearance in every life, and people will be happy to see them. A person who removes ignorance, their wisdom will be sought by all, they will abandon wrong views, and always abide in the right path, the results gained from practice will naturally arise, therefore, one should abandon the wrong path and follow the wonders of truth.' After the Buddha spoke these words, the monks were very happy, bowed, and departed.
