佛說戒香經

西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試光祿卿明教大師臣法賢奉，　詔譯

如是我聞：

一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園，與大比丘眾俱。爾時，尊者阿難來詣佛所，到已頭面禮足，合掌恭敬而白佛言：「世尊！我有少疑欲當啟問，唯愿世尊為我解說。我見世間有三種香，所謂根香、花香、子香，此三種香遍一切處，有風而聞，無風亦聞，其香云何？」

爾時，世尊告尊者阿難：「勿作是言，謂此三種之香，遍一切處有風而聞，無風亦聞。此三種香有風無風，遍一切處而非得聞。阿難！汝今欲聞普遍香者，應當諦聽，為汝宣說。」

阿難白佛言：「世尊！我今樂聞，唯愿宣說。」

佛告阿難：「有風無風香遍十方者，世間若有近事男、近事女，持佛凈戒行諸善法，謂不殺、不盜、不淫、不妄及不飲酒。是近事男、近事女，如是戒香遍聞十方，而彼十方咸皆稱讚，而作是言：『于某城中有如是近事男女，持佛凈戒行諸善法，謂不殺、不盜、不淫、不妄及不飲酒等

現代漢語譯本西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試光祿卿明教大師臣法賢奉詔譯一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園，與大比丘眾在一起。當時，尊者阿難來到佛陀所在的地方，到達后，他頭面禮足，合掌恭敬地對佛說：『世尊！我有一些疑惑想要請教，希望世尊能為我解答。我看到世間有三種香，分別是根香、花香和子香。這三種香遍佈各處，有風的時候可以聞到，沒有風的時候也可以聞到，它們的香氣是怎樣的呢？』這時，世尊告訴尊者阿難：『不要這樣說，說這三種香遍佈各處，有風的時候可以聞到，沒有風的時候也可以聞到。這三種香，無論有風沒風，雖然遍佈各處，但並非都能聞到。阿難！你現在想聽普遍的香，應當仔細聽，我為你宣說。』阿難對佛說：『世尊！我現在很想聽，希望您能宣說。』佛告訴阿難：『有風沒風香氣都能遍佈十方的，世間如果有在家男居士、在家女居士，他們持守佛陀的清凈戒律，奉行各種善法，即不殺生、不偷盜、不邪淫、不妄語以及不飲酒。這些在家男居士、在家女居士，他們的戒香會遍聞十方，而十方都會稱讚他們，並且這樣說：『在某個城市裡有這樣的在家男女，他們持守佛陀的清凈戒律，奉行各種善法，即不殺生、不偷盜、不邪淫、不妄語以及不飲酒等。』

English version The Sutra of the Buddha's Discourse on the Fragrance of Precepts Translated by the Tripitaka Master, Minister Fa Xian, of the Mingjiao Monastery, who held the title of Grand Master of Court Service and was granted the title of Minister of the Court of Imperial Sacrifices, by Imperial Decree. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti, together with a large assembly of monks. At that time, the Venerable Ananda came to where the Buddha was. Having arrived, he bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, joined his palms in reverence, and said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One! I have a few doubts that I wish to ask. I hope the World Honored One will explain them for me. I see that there are three kinds of fragrance in the world, namely root fragrance, flower fragrance, and seed fragrance. These three kinds of fragrance pervade all places. They can be smelled when there is wind, and they can also be smelled when there is no wind. What is the nature of their fragrance?' At that time, the World Honored One said to the Venerable Ananda, 'Do not say that these three kinds of fragrance pervade all places and can be smelled whether there is wind or not. These three kinds of fragrance, whether there is wind or not, although they pervade all places, are not necessarily smelled. Ananda! If you now wish to hear about the universal fragrance, you should listen carefully, and I will explain it to you.' Ananda said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One! I am now eager to hear. I hope you will explain it.' The Buddha said to Ananda, 'The fragrance that pervades the ten directions whether there is wind or not is this: If there are laymen or laywomen in the world who uphold the pure precepts of the Buddha and practice various good deeds, namely not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, and not drinking alcohol, the fragrance of their precepts will be heard throughout the ten directions, and the ten directions will praise them, saying, 'In such and such a city, there are such laymen and laywomen who uphold the pure precepts of the Buddha and practice various good deeds, namely not killing, not stealing, not engaging in sexual misconduct, not lying, and not drinking alcohol, etc.'

。』具此戒法，是人獲如是之香，有風無風遍聞十方，咸皆稱讚而得愛敬。」

爾時，世尊而說頌曰：

「世間所有諸花果，　　乃至沉檀龍麝香，如是等香非遍聞，　　唯聞戒香遍一切。旃檀鬱金與蘇合，　　優缽羅並摩隸花，如是諸妙花香中，　　唯有戒香而最上。所有世間沉檀等，　　其香微少非遍聞，若人持佛凈戒香，　　諸天普聞皆愛敬。如是具足清凈戒，　　乃至常行諸善法，是人能解世間縛，　　所有諸魔常遠離。」

爾時，尊者阿難及比丘眾，聞佛語已，歡喜信受，禮佛而退

現代漢語譯本：『如果有人持守這樣的戒律，這個人就能獲得這樣的香氣，無論有沒有風，他的美名都會傳遍十方，所有人都稱讚他，愛戴他，尊敬他。』當時，世尊說了這樣的偈語：『世間所有各種花果的香氣，乃至沉香、檀香、龍涎香、麝香等香氣，這些香氣都不能傳遍四方，只有持戒的香氣才能傳遍一切地方。旃檀、鬱金、蘇合香，以及優缽羅花和摩隸花，這些美好的花香中，只有戒香最為殊勝。世間所有的沉香、檀香等香氣，它們的香氣微弱，不能傳遍四方，如果有人持守佛陀清凈的戒律，諸天都會聽到，並且愛戴他、尊敬他。這樣具足清凈戒律，乃至常常奉行各種善法的人，能夠解脫世間的束縛，所有的魔障都會遠離他。』當時，尊者阿難和比丘們聽了佛陀的教誨后，都歡喜信受，向佛陀頂禮後退下。

English version: 'If a person possesses these precepts, that person will obtain such fragrance. Whether there is wind or not, their reputation will spread throughout the ten directions. All will praise them, love them, and respect them.' At that time, the World Honored One spoke these verses: 'All the fragrances of flowers and fruits in the world, even the fragrances of agarwood, sandalwood, dragon musk, and musk, these fragrances cannot spread everywhere. Only the fragrance of precepts can spread everywhere. Sandalwood, turmeric, storax, as well as the utpala flower and the malati flower, among these beautiful floral fragrances, only the fragrance of precepts is the most supreme. All the fragrances of agarwood, sandalwood, etc., in the world, their fragrances are weak and cannot spread everywhere. If a person upholds the pure precepts of the Buddha, all the devas will hear it, and they will love and respect that person. A person who thus possesses pure precepts, and even constantly practices all good dharmas, can break free from the bonds of the world, and all demonic obstacles will stay far away from them.' At that time, Venerable Ananda and the assembly of monks, having heard the Buddha's teachings, joyfully accepted them, bowed to the Buddha, and withdrew.
