西晉沙門法炬譯
聞如是:
一時,婆伽婆在舍衛城祇樹給孤獨園。爾時,眾多比丘到時著衣持缽,入舍衛城乞食。時,眾多比丘入舍衛城乞食,聞王波斯匿宮門外,有眾多人民,各攜手啼哭喚呼,便作是說:「於此國土有大惡賊名鴦崛髻,殺害人民暴虐無慈心,村落居止不得寧息,城廓亦不得寧息,人民亦不得寧息。殺害人民各取一指用作華髻,以是故名曰鴦崛髻,愿王當降伏此人。」
時,眾多比丘,從舍衛城乞食已過,食后攝衣缽,澡手洗足,以尼師檀著肩上,詣世尊所,頭面禮足在一面坐。時,諸比丘白世尊言:「我等眾多比丘,到時著衣持缽,入舍衛城乞食。便聞拘婆羅王在宮門外,有眾多人民攜手啼哭,便作是說:『今境界中有大賊名鴦崛髻,殺害人民至各取一指用作花髻,以是故名曰鴦崛髻,愿當降伏彼。』」
時世尊從比丘聞,即從坐起若鴦崛髻居三處,世尊便往彼所

English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park in Sravasti. At that time, many monks, when it was time to beg for alms, put on their robes, took their bowls, and entered Sravasti to beg for food. Then, many monks, while begging for alms in Sravasti, heard that outside King Pasenadi's palace gate, there were many people weeping and crying, holding each other's hands, and they said: 'In this country, there is a great evil thief named Angulimala, who kills people with cruelty and no compassion. Villages and cities cannot find peace, and the people cannot find peace either. He kills people and takes one finger from each victim to make a garland, hence he is named Angulimala. We hope the king will subdue this person.' At that time, many monks, having finished begging for alms in Sravasti, after eating, put away their robes and bowls, washed their hands and feet, placed their sitting cloths on their shoulders, and went to where the World Honored One was, bowed their heads to his feet, and sat down on one side. Then, the monks said to the World Honored One: 'We, many monks, when it was time to beg for alms, put on our robes, took our bowls, and entered Sravasti to beg for food. We heard that outside King Pasenadi's palace gate, there were many people weeping and crying, holding each other's hands, and they said: 'Now in this territory, there is a great thief named Angulimala, who kills people and takes one finger from each victim to make a garland, hence he is named Angulimala. We hope the king will subdue him.' At that time, the World Honored One, having heard the monks, immediately rose from his seat. If Angulimala was in three places, the World Honored One would go to those places.
。時,有眾人擔薪負草及耕田人,有行路人詣世尊所,語世尊言:「沙門莫從此道行。所以然者,此道中有鴦崛髻,殺害人民無有慈心於眾生,城廓村落皆為彼人所害,彼殺人以指作花髻。觸嬈世尊,諸有沙門人民之類從此道行者,十人共集然後得過,或二十人、或三十人、或四十人、或五十人、或百人、或千人,然後得過。彼鴦崛髻從意所欲皆取食之。」時,世尊遂便前行,無退轉意。
時,鴦崛髻遙見世尊來,見已便作是念:「諸有人民欲來過此道者,十人共集至,或千人然後得過,隨意所欲而殺害之。然此沙門獨來無伴,我今當取殺之。」時鴦崛髻即拔腰劍往至世尊所。時,世尊遙見鴦崛髻來便複道還。時,鴦崛髻走逐世尊,盡其力勢欲及世尊然不能及。時,鴦崛髻便作是念:「我走能逮象、亦能及馬、亦能及車、亦能及暴惡牛、亦能及人,然此沙門行亦不疾,然盡其力勢不能及。」時,鴦崛髻遙語世尊言:「住!住!沙門。」世尊告曰:「我久自住,然汝不住。」
時,鴦崛髻便說此偈:
「沙門行言住, 謂我言不住, 沙門說此義, 自住我不住。」
爾時世尊語鴦崛髻言:「汝聽我所說,我住汝不住義

English version: At that time, there were many people carrying firewood and grass, as well as farmers and travelers, who came to where the World Honored One was. They said to the World Honored One, 'Shramana, do not walk on this path. The reason is that there is Angulimala on this path, who kills people and has no compassion for living beings. Towns and villages have all been harmed by him. He makes a garland of fingers from the people he kills. He will harass the World Honored One. Any Shramana or people who pass this way must gather in groups of ten to pass, or twenty, thirty, forty, fifty, one hundred, or even one thousand to pass. That Angulimala can take and eat them at will.' At that time, the World Honored One continued to walk forward, without any intention of retreating. At that time, Angulimala saw the World Honored One coming from afar. Upon seeing him, he thought, 'Those who want to pass this path must gather in groups of ten, or even one thousand, to pass, and I can kill them at will. However, this Shramana is coming alone, without any companions. Today, I should kill him.' At that time, Angulimala drew his sword from his waist and went to where the World Honored One was. At that time, the World Honored One saw Angulimala coming from afar and turned back. At that time, Angulimala chased after the World Honored One, using all his strength to catch up, but he could not. At that time, Angulimala thought, 'When I run, I can catch up with elephants, horses, carts, fierce oxen, and people. However, this Shramana is not walking fast, yet I cannot catch up even with all my strength.' At that time, Angulimala said to the World Honored One from afar, 'Stop! Stop! Shramana.' The World Honored One told him, 'I have long since stopped, but you have not stopped.' At that time, Angulimala spoke this verse: 'The Shramana walks but says to stop, says that I have not stopped. The Shramana speaks this principle, that he has stopped, but says that I have not stopped.' At that time, the World Honored One said to Angulimala, 'Listen to what I say, the principle of how I have stopped but you have not.'
。」時便說偈言:
「世尊常自住, 一切蒙其恩, 汝自殺害心, 亦不避惡行。」
爾時鴦崛髻便作是念:「我今作惡行耶?」時,鴦崛髻,便說偈言:
「於我發慈心, 沙門說此偈。」 即時舍腰劍, 五體歸命佛。 頭面而禮足, 求為作沙門, 佛言來比丘, 即受具足戒。
諸佛世尊常法,如諸佛世尊作是言:「善來!比丘!」即時鬚髮自墮猶如剃頭,經七日中,若彼所著袈裟極妙細滑,若施布劫貝育越衣,則化成袈裟。世尊作是說已:「善來!比丘!當修梵行於我法中,無憍慢意當盡苦源本。」
時,鴦崛髻鬚髮自墮,身著袈裟在世尊后。時,世尊將鴦崛髻在後行,從阇梨園詣祇洹便就座坐。時,鴦崛髻為諸尊長比丘所教訓威儀禮節,作是教訓已,所以族姓子,以信堅固出家學道修無上梵行,盡生死源梵行已立,所作已辦,更不復受母胎。時,鴦崛髻成阿羅漢。
時,尊者鴦崛髻,修阿練若行無人之處,常乞食不選擇家,著五納衣人所不利。時,王波斯匿集四部兵,集四部兵已出舍衛城,欲往殺賊鴦崛髻。時,波斯匿王便作是念:「可先往至世尊所,以此義具向世尊說,若世尊教敕者,我當奉行。」時,波斯匿王詣祇洹步行至世尊所

English version: Then, the World Honored One spoke in verse: 'The World Honored One always dwells in himself, all beings receive his grace, yet you harbor a murderous heart and do not avoid evil deeds.' At that time, Angulimala thought, 'Am I now doing evil deeds?' Then, Angulimala also spoke in verse: 'This Shramana has shown compassion towards me and spoken these verses.' He immediately discarded the sword at his waist and prostrated himself before the Buddha with his five limbs touching the ground. He bowed his head to the Buddha's feet and requested to become a Shramana. The Buddha said, 'Come, Bhikkhu!' He immediately received the full ordination. It is the constant practice of the Buddhas, the World Honored Ones, that when they say, 'Welcome, Bhikkhu!' his hair and beard will naturally fall off as if shaved. Within seven days, if the robe he wears is extremely fine and smooth, or if the donated cloth is of the finest quality, it will transform into a robe. After the World Honored One said these words, he added, 'Welcome, Bhikkhu! You should practice the Brahma-faring in my Dharma, without arrogance, and you should exhaust the source of suffering.' At that time, Angulimala's hair and beard naturally fell off, and he was wearing a robe, standing behind the World Honored One. Then, the World Honored One, with Angulimala following behind, went from Jali Garden to Jetavana, and then sat down. At that time, Angulimala was taught the proper conduct and etiquette by the elder Bhikkhus. After this instruction, this son of a good family, because of his firm faith, left home to study the Way, practiced the supreme Brahma-faring, exhausted the source of birth and death, established the Brahma-faring, completed what needed to be done, and would no longer be reborn from a mother's womb. At that time, Angulimala became an Arhat. At that time, the Venerable Angulimala practiced the Aranya-faring, in secluded places, often begging for food, not choosing houses, wearing five patched robes, and people were unfavorable towards him. At that time, King Pasenadi gathered his four divisions of troops, and after gathering them, left Shravasti, intending to kill the thief Angulimala. At that time, King Pasenadi thought, 'I should first go to the World Honored One and tell him about this matter in detail. If the World Honored One has any instructions, I should follow them.' At that time, King Pasenadi walked to Jetavana and arrived at the World Honored One.
。夫剎利王種有五相。云何為五?謂蓋、天冠、朱拂柄、劍寶、履屣,盡舍著一面,頭面禮足在一面坐。
時,波斯匿王坐已,世尊問曰:「王何故集四部兵,塵土坌衣來至我所?」
時,波斯匿王白世尊言:「於此舍衛城有賊名鴦崛髻,殺害人民無有慈心,城廓村落皆厭患之,人民分離,彼殺害人民已而取其指用作華髻。欲往殺彼人。」
世尊告曰:「若今王見鴦崛髻剃除鬚髮著三法衣,以信堅固出家學道,王欲取云何?」
王報言:「當取何為?當問訊禮敬,承事供養,無有害心向。然!世尊。彼兇惡人無有慈心於眾生類,能修沙門行耶?」
時,尊者鴦崛髻,去世尊不遠結加趺坐,直身正意繫念在前。時,世尊舉右手示鴦崛髻處:「大王!此是賊鴦崛髻。」時,波斯匿王見鴦崛髻已,便懷恐怖衣毛皆豎。時世尊告王波斯匿言:「大王!勿懷恐怖,自到彼所自當與王語。」
時,波斯匿王便往至鴦崛髻所,到已頭面禮足在一面立。時,波斯匿王問鴦崛髻言:「尊者鴦崛髻,今名何等?」鴦崛髻答言:「大王!我名伽瞿,母名曼多耶尼。」王報言:「汝善自勉進,我今盡形壽供養尊者伽瞿,衣被、飯食、病瘦醫藥、床臥具,無所吝惜,常當以法擁護

English version: The Kshatriya royal lineage has five symbols. What are the five? They are: the parasol, the royal crown, the crimson fly-whisk handle, the sword, and the shoes. They would set these aside, then bow their heads to the Buddha and sit to one side. At that time, after King Pasenadi had sat down, the World-Honored One asked, 'Why has the king gathered the four divisions of his army, and come to me covered in dust?' At that time, King Pasenadi said to the World-Honored One, 'In this city of Sravasti, there is a thief named Angulimala, who kills people without any compassion. The World-Honored One said, 'If now the king were to see Angulimala with his head shaved, wearing the three robes, having left home with firm faith to practice the Way, what would the king do?' The king replied, 'What else could I do? I should greet him, bow to him, serve and make offerings to him, and have no intention of harming him. But, World-Honored One, that cruel man has no compassion for living beings, can he practice the life of a Shramana?' At that time, the Venerable Angulimala was not far from the World-Honored One, sitting in the lotus position, his body upright, his mind focused. Then, the World-Honored One raised his right hand, pointing to where Angulimala was, and said, 'Great King, this is the thief Angulimala.' When King Pasenadi saw Angulimala, he was immediately terrified, and his hair stood on end. The World-Honored One said to King Pasenadi, 'Great King, do not be afraid, go to him yourself, and he will speak with you.' At that time, King Pasenadi went to where Angulimala was, and after arriving, he bowed to him and stood to one side. King Pasenadi asked Angulimala, 'Venerable Angulimala, what is your name now?' Angulimala replied, 'Great King, my name is Gagga, and my mother's name is Mantani.' The king said, 'You must strive diligently in your practice. For the rest of my life, I will make offerings to Venerable Gagga, providing you with clothing, food, medicine, and bedding. I will not be stingy, and I will always protect you with the Dharma.'
。」時,波斯匿王頭面禮足繞三匝,詣世尊所頭面禮足在一面坐。時,波斯匿王白世尊言:「世尊,不降伏者能降伏之,如來皆使剛強者降伏,乃不加刀杖降伏眾生。我有眾多事欲還國。」世尊告曰:「今正是時隨意所欲。」時,波斯匿王即從座起,頭面禮足繞三匝便退而去。
時,鴦崛髻,即其日著衣持缽入舍衛城乞食。時,鴦崛髻乞食時,見一女人懷妊,欲產未得時產,見已便作是念:「此眾生甚為苦惱。」時,鴦崛髻入舍衛城乞食,食后攝衣缽澡手洗足,以尼師檀著肩上,便至世尊所頭面禮足在一面坐。時,指髻白世尊言:「我向者著衣持缽,入舍衛城乞食。乞食時見一女人懷妊欲產,然不得時產,見已我便作是念:『此眾生類甚為苦惱。』」
世尊告曰:「汝!指髻,往彼女人所便語彼女人言:『諸聖所生,我從聖生以來,不自憶殺害眾生命,以至誠語,使彼女人安隱得產。』」
爾時,指髻白世尊言:「此非於彼我有妄語耶?所以然者,我於此身殺害無數百千眾生。」
世尊告曰:「汝處俗時,今處聖時不與本同。汝指髻入舍衛城于街巷作是唱令:『諸賢當護五事。以何為五?不殺生、不與取、不淫、不妄語、不飲酒

Angulimala said to the Buddha, 'Earlier, I put on my robes, took my bowl, and entered Shravasti to beg for food. While begging for food, I saw a pregnant woman who was about to give birth but could not deliver smoothly. Upon seeing this, I thought, 『This sentient being is suffering greatly.』' The Buddha said to him, 'You, Angulimala, go to that woman and tell her: 『Since I became a saint, I do not remember killing any sentient being. With this truthful statement, may that woman have a safe and smooth delivery.』' At that time, Angulimala said to the Buddha, 'Wouldn't this be a lie on my part? Because I have killed countless sentient beings in the past.' The Buddha said, 'Your state when you were a layman is different from your state now as a saint. You, Angulimala, enter Shravasti and proclaim in the streets: 『Virtuous ones, you should protect five things. What are the five? Do not kill, do not steal, do not engage in sexual misconduct, do not lie, and do not drink alcohol.』'
。所以然者,殺生之報,以刀施得刀報,盜報增益貧窮、淫報妻婦增益奸邪、妄語報眾生口氣臭穢、飲酒報增益眾亂。』往彼女人所,到已語彼女人言:『我從聖生以來,未曾憶殺害眾生,以是真誠語使女人安隱得產。』」對曰:「如是,世尊。」
時,指髻到時著衣持缽,入舍衛城乞食。于街巷作是唱令:「諸賢當護五事,至女人安隱得產。」漸往至彼女人所。到已語女人言:「我自從聖生,不自憶殺害一人命,以是真誠語使女人安隱得產。」時,指髻說是語適竟,彼女人即得產。
時,指髻食后欲出舍衛城。有一人以石打指髻身,復有一人以杖打指髻身,復有一人以刀斫指髻身體破。時指髻頭破身血,出舍衛城到世尊所。時,世尊遙見指髻來,頭破血流污僧伽梨身體破,見已語言:「忍勿發惡意,此之行報無數百千劫當入地獄中,今所受報亦不足言。」
時指髻白言:「如是!世尊!如是!如來!」時,指髻以和悅心即于佛前,說此偈言:
「我忍甚堅固, 無有增減心, 我今聞正法, 是故不懈慢。 聞法亦堅固, 好信佛法僧, 親近善知識, 諸能分別法。 我曾為惡賊, 名曰鴦崛髻, 為水所漂溺

English version: Therefore, the retribution for killing is that one who uses a knife will receive a knife in return; the retribution for stealing increases poverty; the retribution for sexual misconduct increases the wickedness of wives or women; the retribution for lying makes the breath of beings foul; and the retribution for drinking increases confusion.』 He went to that woman, and upon arriving, said to her, 『Since my birth, I have never remembered killing any living being. With this truthful statement, may the woman have a safe delivery.』 The woman replied, 『Yes, Venerable One.』 Then, when it was time for Zhi Ji to eat, he put on his robes, took his bowl, and entered the city of Savatthi to beg for food. In the streets and alleys, he made this proclamation: 『Virtuous ones, you should protect five things, so that women may have safe deliveries.』 He gradually went to that woman. Upon arriving, he said to the woman, 『Since my birth, I do not remember killing a single person. With this truthful statement, may the woman have a safe delivery.』 At that moment, as soon as Zhi Ji finished speaking, the woman gave birth safely. Then, after Zhi Ji had eaten, he wanted to leave Savatthi. One person hit Zhi Ji』s body with a stone, another person hit Zhi Ji』s body with a wooden staff, and another person cut Zhi Ji』s body with a knife, causing his body to break. At that time, Zhi Ji』s head was broken and bleeding, and his body, wearing the sanghati robe, was also broken. He left Savatthi and went to the Venerable One. Then, the Venerable One saw Zhi Ji coming from afar, his head broken and bleeding, his sanghati robe stained with blood, and his body broken. Upon seeing this, he said, 『Be patient, do not generate ill will. The retribution for this action will cause you to fall into hell for countless hundreds of thousands of kalpas. The retribution you are receiving now is insignificant.』 Then, Zhi Ji replied, 『Yes! Venerable One! Yes! Tathagata!』 Then, with a peaceful and joyful heart, Zhi Ji spoke this verse before the Buddha: 『My patience is very firm, without increase or decrease in my mind. Now I hear the true Dharma, therefore I am not lazy. Hearing the Dharma is also firm, I have good faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha. I draw near to good teachers, who can distinguish the Dharma. I was once an evil thief, named Angulimala, who was drowned by water.』
。 自歸命三佛, 當歸自歸命, 於法分別法, 已得三達智, 還得佛跡處。 本為放逸行, 殺害眾生命, 今名至誠諦, 不復殺害人。 身口之所行, 意亦無所害, 彼名為殺者, 不為人所嫉。 夫年少比丘, 亦應佛戒律, 此明照世間, 如月雲霧消。 前為淫逸行, 后改不復犯, 為水所漂沒, 亦如被練剛, 巧匠解木理, 智者自修身。 或以加刀杖, 或鞭韁靽𩋙, 無力亦無持, 為佛所降伏。 亦不希望死, 亦不希望生, 自觀察時節, 安詳不卒暴。」
爾時,世尊觀樂指髻,便告諸比丘:「汝等,頗見比丘中如我弟子,有捷疾智聞法便解,所謂伽瞿比丘聞法便解。」
諸比丘言:「不也。世尊!」
爾時,世尊告諸比丘:「我聲聞中第一比丘有捷疾智,所謂指髻比丘是。」
爾時,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行
我皈依三佛,應當皈依自身,于佛法中分辨法理,已獲得三明智,還需追隨佛陀的足跡。 過去我放縱自己,殺害眾生,現在我真心懺悔,不再殺害任何生命。 身口意所行,都不再傷害他人,這樣的人才配稱為『不殺者』,不會被人憎恨。 年輕的比丘,也應遵守佛陀的戒律,他的光芒將照耀世間,如同明月驅散雲霧。 過去我行為淫蕩,現在我改過自新,不再犯錯,他的光芒將照耀世間,如同明月驅散雲霧。 如同被水淹沒,又如同被堅硬的鋼鐵束縛,如同巧匠理解木頭的紋理,智者應自我修行。 即使被刀杖加身,或被鞭打束縛,無力反抗,也應被佛陀的教誨所降伏。 不貪生,不怕死,觀察時機,安詳不急躁。 這時,世尊看著樂指髻,對眾比丘說:『你們見過比丘中像我弟子一樣,有敏捷的智慧,聽聞佛法就能理解的嗎?就像伽瞿比丘那樣,聽聞佛法就能理解。』 眾比丘回答說:『沒有,世尊!』 這時,世尊告訴眾比丘:『我的聲聞弟子中,第一位擁有敏捷智慧的比丘,就是指髻比丘。』 這時,眾比丘聽聞佛陀所說,歡喜地奉行。
I take refuge in the Three Buddhas, I should take refuge in myself, discern the Dharma within the teachings, having attained the three kinds of wisdom, I must also follow the Buddha's footsteps. In the past, I indulged myself, killing living beings, now I sincerely repent, and will no longer kill any life. What I do with my body, mouth, and mind, will no longer harm others, such a person is worthy of being called a 'non-killer', and will not be hated by others. Young monks should also abide by the Buddha's precepts, their light will illuminate the world, like the bright moon dispelling the clouds. In the past, I acted licentiously, now I have reformed and will not make mistakes again, their light will illuminate the world, like the bright moon dispelling the clouds. Like being submerged in water, or like being bound by hard steel, like a skilled craftsman understanding the grain of wood, the wise should cultivate themselves. Even if struck by swords and staffs, or whipped and bound, powerless to resist, one should be subdued by the Buddha's teachings. Not greedy for life, not afraid of death, observe the timing, be peaceful and not impatient. At this time, the World Honored One looked at Lè Zhǐ Jì, and said to the monks: 'Have you seen among the monks, one like my disciple, who has quick wisdom, and understands the Dharma as soon as they hear it? Like the monk Gā Qú, who understands the Dharma as soon as they hear it.' The monks replied: 'No, World Honored One!' At this time, the World Honored One told the monks: 'Among my disciples who are hearers, the first monk with quick wisdom is the monk Zhǐ Jì.' At this time, the monks heard what the Buddha said, and joyfully practiced it.
