聞如是:

一時,佛在舍衛國王舍城中。有一長者,名阿那邠池,有一女名曰須摩提,此女久殖妙因,天殊奇特,受佛高行靜心玄室。爾時,滿富城中有滿財長者,遠涉諸國募求精婇,因入舍衛城與邠池相見,披釋曠永歡敘情至。爾時須摩提女,以公類同尊暫出敬拜,敷理光顏萬姿並美,面如白月初圓,目如眾星夜朗。滿財語邠池言:「此女是誰家女?」邠池言:「此女正是我女。」滿財聞是,欣然自嘆:「我相與少舊周旋義不容外,我有小兒始欲覓婇,未有定處,卿此小女可為婚匹。」邠池言:「事不宜爾。」滿財自怨:「何以故事不宜爾?為當門望不齊,為當居生不等?卿亦豪尊富貴,我亦豪尊富貴,何以故事不宜爾?」邠池復言:「我女長夜唸佛奉持齋戒,卿家繼屬外神殺生血食,以是繼屬不同,事不宜爾。」滿財語邠池言:「卿家所事別自供養,我家所事別自供養,雖復所事不同,何妨人自私好?」

爾時,邠池心不相與,苦相難卻:「我索卿黃金萬斤,明珠百石,龍肝為禮貺,鳳髓為案具,若能爾者脫可相與。」滿財聞是驚喜誓言:「我能得備。」邠池復言:「我為戲耳,非是情實,要當問佛然後相與

現代漢語譯本 如是我聞: 一時,佛陀在舍衛國的王舍城中。有一位長者,名叫阿那邠池,他有一個女兒名叫須摩提。這個女子因久遠以來種下殊勝的因緣,天生就特別出衆,她接受佛陀的高尚教誨,在清凈的禪房中靜心修行。當時,滿富城中有一位名叫滿財的長者,他遠行到各國去尋覓美麗的女子。他來到舍衛城,與阿那邠池相見,兩人敞開心扉,暢談許久,情誼深厚。這時,須摩提女因為同輩的緣故,暫時出來向滿財致敬。她容貌光彩照人,姿態萬千,美麗無比,面容像新月般皎潔,眼睛像夜空中閃爍的星星。滿財問阿那邠池說:『這位女子是誰家的女兒?』阿那邠池回答說:『這位女子正是我的女兒。』滿財聽了,欣喜地自言自語道:『我與你相識已久,情誼深厚,不應見外。我有一個小兒子,正想找個妻子,還沒有確定人選,你的這個小女兒可以與他結為夫婦。』阿那邠池說:『這件事不合適。』滿財不解地問:『為什麼說不合適呢?難道是門第不相當,還是出身不同?你也是豪門貴族,我也是豪門貴族,為什麼說不合適呢?』阿那邠池又說:『我的女兒長久以來念佛,奉持齋戒,而你家信奉外道,殺生祭祀,飲食血腥,因為信仰不同,所以不合適。』滿財對阿那邠池說:『你家信奉的,你們自己供養,我家信奉的,我們自己供養,雖然信仰不同,又有什麼妨礙各自的喜好呢?』 當時,阿那邠池心中不同意,但又難以推辭,就故意刁難道:『我索要你黃金萬斤,明珠百石,龍肝作為聘禮,鳳髓作為案具,如果能做到這些,或許可以答應。』滿財聽了,驚喜地發誓說:『我能辦到。』阿那邠池又說:『我只是開玩笑罷了,並非真心,這件事要問過佛陀之後才能決定。』

English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the city of Rajagriha in the kingdom of Shravasti. There was an elder named Anathapindika, who had a daughter named Sumati. This woman, due to the excellent causes she had cultivated for a long time, was naturally extraordinary. She received the Buddha's noble teachings and practiced meditation in a quiet chamber. At that time, there was an elder named Purna-dhana in the city of Purna, who traveled to various countries in search of beautiful women. He came to Shravasti and met Anathapindika. They opened their hearts and talked for a long time, their friendship deepening. At this time, Sumati temporarily came out to pay her respects to Purna-dhana because of their similar status. Her face was radiant, her posture was graceful, and she was extremely beautiful. Her face was as bright as the new moon, and her eyes were like the stars shining in the night sky. Purna-dhana asked Anathapindika, 'Whose daughter is this woman?' Anathapindika replied, 'This woman is my daughter.' Upon hearing this, Purna-dhana happily said to himself, 'I have known you for a long time, and our friendship is deep, so there is no need to be distant. I have a young son who is looking for a wife, and he has not yet decided on anyone. Your young daughter can marry him.' Anathapindika said, 'This matter is not suitable.' Purna-dhana asked in confusion, 'Why is it not suitable? Is it because our families are not of equal status, or because our backgrounds are different? You are a noble and wealthy family, and I am also a noble and wealthy family, so why is it not suitable?' Anathapindika further said, 'My daughter has long been reciting the Buddha's name and observing the precepts of fasting. Your family worships external gods, kills living beings for sacrifices, and eats bloody food. Because our beliefs are different, it is not suitable.' Purna-dhana said to Anathapindika, 'What your family worships, you can offer yourselves, and what my family worships, we can offer ourselves. Although our beliefs are different, what harm is there in each of us having our own preferences?' At that time, Anathapindika did not agree in his heart, but it was difficult to refuse, so he deliberately made things difficult, saying, 'I demand ten thousand catties of gold, one hundred stones of pearls, dragon liver as a betrothal gift, and phoenix marrow as a table setting. If you can do these things, perhaps I can agree.' Upon hearing this, Purna-dhana was overjoyed and vowed, 'I can do it.' Anathapindika then said, 'I was just joking, not being serious. This matter must be decided after asking the Buddha.'

邠池於是往問佛:「世尊!今須摩提女為滿富城中滿財長者所求為婚,為當可與?為當不可與?」

佛言:「若須摩提女嫁適彼國,當大度人民不可稱計。」邠池於是還語滿財言:「卻後十五日備卿家禮法。」滿財聞是歡喜匍匐歸返。

爾時,滿富城、舍衛城相去三千二百里,滿財于中,引車萬乘,龍馬俠從,憧麾絙云,聲鐘地震,婇女扶輪僮奴侍隔。

爾時,阿那邠池,先與女造十二種寶車,先以赤蓮華簟內、摩尼覆外,黃金重布,白銀羅絡,琥珀揚班,珊瑚、琉璃、車𤦲,合雜馬瑙交間水精,鱗暉琉璃采飾,復以紫磨徘徊懸灑疊起,於是明明相發,光光相照,遠瞻者不覺東影西傾,近視者不覺雙目俱眩。

爾時,滿富城中先有製法:「若此中有女嫁適彼國當重刑罰,若彼國索婦將來內入亦重刑罰。若犯制者,使供養六千梵志,兼可情意,梵志所食,䐗肉為羹,三釀為酒。」滿財自知犯制,大請群師寬庭列會,命須摩提女為諸師作禮。須摩提言:「我雖女人志剛不可屈,此梵志之徒無異牛犢,醜陋五形貪嗜美味無慚無恥,與畜生何別。我寧形毀五兀,不能為是作禮。」

爾時,六千梵志聞即同忿:「何處索民小家婢來罵辱我等?」於是散坐處處告集,剋日卜時欲來誅殺滿財並及五族。滿財於是自閉高樓稱天怨抂:「胡為索是損我五族。」以此為憂無方自釋

邠池於是去問佛陀:『世尊!現在須摩提女被滿富城中的富豪滿財求婚,應該答應嗎?還是不應該答應?』 佛陀說:『如果須摩提女嫁到那個國家,將會度化無數的人民。』邠池於是回去告訴滿財說:『十五天後,準備好你家的婚禮禮儀。』滿財聽了非常高興,匍匐著回去。 當時,滿富城和舍衛城相距三千二百里。滿財在途中,帶領著一萬輛車,龍馬護衛,旌旗飄揚,鐘聲震動大地,侍女扶著車輪,僕人侍候在旁。 當時,阿那邠池,事先為女兒製造了十二種寶車,先用紅蓮花席鋪在裡面,外面覆蓋著摩尼寶珠,用黃金重重鋪設,白銀羅網交織,琥珀閃耀光芒,珊瑚、琉璃裝飾車軸,混合著瑪瑙和水晶交錯,鱗片般的光輝和琉璃色彩裝飾,又用紫磨金懸掛著層層疊疊的裝飾,於是光芒相互輝映,遠遠望去,讓人感覺不到太陽的東昇西落,近看的人感覺雙眼都眩暈。 當時,滿富城中先有規定:『如果這裡有女子嫁到別的國家,將處以重刑,如果從別的國家娶媳婦進來,也要處以重刑。』如果違反規定,就要供養六千梵志,還要滿足他們的心意,梵志所吃的,用肉做羹,用三次釀造的酒。 滿財知道自己違反了規定,就大擺宴席,請來眾多老師,在庭院裡列席,命令須摩提女向各位老師行禮。須摩提說:『我雖然是女人,但意志剛強不可屈服,這些梵志之徒和牛犢沒什麼區別,長相醜陋,貪圖美味,不知羞恥,和畜生有什麼區別。我寧願毀壞自己的容貌,也不能向他們行禮。』 當時,六千梵志聽了,一起憤怒地說:『從哪裡找來的小戶人家的婢女,竟然敢辱罵我們?』於是分散在各處,召集人手,選定日子,想要誅殺滿財以及他的五族。滿財於是把自己關在高樓上,向天抱怨說:『為什麼會招來這樣的災禍,損害我的五族。』為此憂愁,不知如何是好。

Then Bimbisara went to ask the Buddha: 'World Honored One! Now, Sumati is being sought in marriage by the wealthy man, Purna-dhana, of Purna-dhana City. Should she be given in marriage? Or should she not?' The Buddha said: 'If Sumati marries into that country, she will greatly convert countless people.' Bimbisara then returned and told Purna-dhana: 'In fifteen days, prepare your family's wedding rituals.' Purna-dhana was overjoyed upon hearing this and prostrated himself in return. At that time, Purna-dhana City and Shravasti were three thousand two hundred miles apart. Purna-dhana, along the way, led ten thousand carriages, with dragon horses as escorts, banners fluttering, the sound of bells shaking the earth, maids supporting the wheels, and servants attending nearby. At that time, Anathapindika had previously made twelve kinds of jeweled carriages for his daughter. First, red lotus mats were placed inside, and mani jewels covered the outside. Gold was layered heavily, and silver nets were interwoven. Amber shone brightly, coral and lapis lazuli adorned the axles, mixed with agate and crystal intermingled. The scales of light and lapis lazuli colors decorated them. Furthermore, purple gold was suspended in layers, so that the lights reflected each other. Those who looked from afar did not notice the sun's east-west movement, and those who looked closely felt their eyes dazzled. At that time, there was a law in Purna-dhana City: 'If a woman from here marries into another country, she will be severely punished. If a woman is brought in from another country, she will also be severely punished.' If one violated the law, they had to provide for six thousand Brahmins, and also satisfy their desires. The Brahmins would eat meat soup and drink thrice-brewed wine. Purna-dhana knew that he had violated the law, so he held a grand banquet, inviting many teachers, arranging seats in the courtyard, and ordering Sumati to pay respects to the teachers. Sumati said: 'Although I am a woman, my will is strong and cannot be bent. These Brahmins are no different from calves, ugly in appearance, greedy for delicacies, and shameless. What difference is there between them and animals? I would rather disfigure myself than pay respects to them.' At that time, the six thousand Brahmins, upon hearing this, were filled with anger and said: 'Where did this lowly maid come from, daring to insult us?' So they scattered to various places, gathering people, and choosing a day to kill Purna-dhana and his five clans. Purna-dhana then locked himself in a high tower, complaining to the heavens: 'Why has this disaster come upon me, harming my five clans?' He was worried about this and did not know what to do.

爾時,須拔飛來樓上,見滿財憂悴語言:「卿為當盜賊所侵,為當死亡不埋,何故憂色乃爾?」滿財答言:「非是死亡盜賊,但自昨日為兒娶婦,毀辱諸師並及五族,以此為憂無方自釋。」

爾時,須拔語滿財言:「卿何處娶婦?」滿財答言:「舍衛城中阿那邠池女。」須拔聞是大驚大懼:「卿婦今來此中,我等將大遇也。」滿財問言:「君何以知之?」須拔報言:「我本共舍利弗最小沙彌,名字均頭,年始三四,到雪山北乞食,各得一缽,我於是高飛來至阿耨池邊。爾時,池邊有天龍鬼神,遮護池水不聽我近。

「爾時,均頭沙彌亦復飛來,乃更歡喜稱言:『大善!』坐以金案奉修精竭,須臾之間,上越四空還複本處。此最小沙彌有此神德,何況所事大師?」滿財問言:「彼師可得見不?」須拔報言:「若欲見彼大師,當好求須摩提女。」於是滿財下樓敬意白鬚摩提女言:「汝今所事之師可得見不?」須摩提言:「若長者回心倒意深自歸德,我當爲長者香粉涂身登樓遠請。」爾時,須摩提女以香油涂身登高樓頭,遙白佛言:「世尊!女今在難,為眾邪所逼,愿世尊大慈大悲救濟危厄。」於是,香氣如雲往到祇桓精舍。阿難見香非常所見,白佛言:「世尊!此香異香從何處來?」佛言:「此香是佛使之香,今須摩提女在滿富城中,為諸邪道所逼,今遣香來請我並及卿等。速鳴槌集眾普會堂上,語言:『今須摩提女在滿富城中,為眾邪道所逼,今遣香來請佛並及時眾,若有得神通變化者受籌,不得者默然

當時,須拔飛到樓上,看到滿財憂愁的樣子,便問:『你是因為被盜賊侵擾,還是因為有親人去世未安葬,為何如此憂愁?』滿財回答說:『不是因為死亡或盜賊,而是因為我昨天為兒子娶媳婦,侮辱了各位老師以及五族,因此憂愁,不知如何是好。』 當時,須拔問滿財說:『你是在哪裡娶的媳婦?』滿財回答說:『是在舍衛城中阿那邠池的女兒。』須拔聽后大驚失色:『你的媳婦現在來到這裡,我們恐怕要遭大難了!』滿財問:『你為何知道?』須拔回答說:『我曾經和舍利弗最小的沙彌,名字叫均頭,他才三四歲,一起到雪山北邊乞食,各自得到一個缽。我於是高飛來到阿耨池邊。當時,池邊有天龍鬼神,遮擋池水,不讓我靠近。』 『當時,均頭沙彌也飛來了,那些天龍鬼神反而歡喜地稱讚說:『太好了!』並用金案供奉他精美的食物,須臾之間,他就超越了四禪天,回到原來的地方。這個最小的沙彌都有如此神力,更何況他所侍奉的大師呢?』滿財問:『他的老師可以見到嗎?』須拔回答說:『如果想見他的大師,應當好好求須摩提女。』於是滿財下樓,恭敬地對須摩提女說:『你所侍奉的老師可以見到嗎?』須摩提說:『如果長者能回心轉意,真心歸順佛法,我當爲長者塗上香粉,登上高樓,遙請佛陀。』當時,須摩提女用香油涂身,登上高樓,遙向佛陀稟告說:『世尊!我現在身處困境,被眾多邪道所逼迫,愿世尊大慈大悲,救濟我的危難。』於是,香氣如雲一般飄到祇桓精舍。阿難看到這香氣不同尋常,便問佛陀:『世尊!這奇異的香氣是從哪裡來的?』佛陀說:『這香氣是佛的使者所發出的,現在須摩提女在滿富城中,被各種邪道所逼迫,現在派遣香氣來請我和你們。快敲鐘集合大眾到講堂,告訴大家:『現在須摩提女在滿富城中,被各種邪道所逼迫,現在派遣香氣來請佛陀和僧眾,如果有神通變化的人可以接受籌碼,沒有的就保持沉默。』

At that time, Subha flew to the upper floor and saw that Manac was worried, so he asked, 'Are you troubled by thieves, or is it because someone has died and not been buried? Why do you look so worried?' Manac replied, 'It's not because of death or thieves, but because yesterday I took a wife for my son and insulted all the teachers and the five clans. This is why I am worried and don't know what to do.' Then, Subha asked Manac, 'Where did you get your wife?' Manac replied, 'She is the daughter of Anathapindika's pond in Sravasti.' Upon hearing this, Subha was greatly alarmed, 'Your wife has come here, we are likely to face great trouble!' Manac asked, 'How do you know?' Subha replied, 'I once went with Sariputra's youngest novice, named Juntou, who was only three or four years old, to beg for food north of the Himalayas. We each got a bowl. I then flew high to the edge of Anavatapta Lake. At that time, there were dragons and spirits guarding the lake, not allowing me to approach.' 'Then, the novice Juntou also flew over, and those dragons and spirits were instead delighted and praised him, saying, 'Excellent!' They offered him exquisite food on a golden tray. In a short while, he transcended the four dhyanas and returned to his original place. This youngest novice has such divine power, how much more so the master he serves?' Manac asked, 'Can his master be seen?' Subha replied, 'If you want to see his master, you should earnestly seek Sumati.' So Manac went downstairs and respectfully said to Sumati, 'Can the master you serve be seen?' Sumati said, 'If the elder can repent and sincerely turn to the Dharma, I will anoint the elder with fragrant powder, ascend the high tower, and invite the Buddha from afar.' At that time, Sumati anointed herself with fragrant oil, ascended the high tower, and reported to the Buddha from afar, 'World Honored One! I am now in distress, being oppressed by many heretics. May the World Honored One, with great compassion, save me from this danger.' Then, the fragrance, like clouds, drifted to Jetavana Monastery. Ananda saw that this fragrance was unusual and asked the Buddha, 'World Honored One! Where does this strange fragrance come from?' The Buddha said, 'This fragrance is emitted by the Buddha's messenger. Now Sumati is in Manac's city, being oppressed by various heretics. She has sent this fragrance to invite me and you all. Quickly strike the bell to gather everyone in the lecture hall and tell them: 'Now Sumati is in Manac's city, being oppressed by various heretics. She has sent this fragrance to invite the Buddha and the Sangha. Those who have supernatural powers can accept a token, and those who do not should remain silent.'

爾時,眾中有周利槃特伽、佛子羅云、須菩提、舍利弗、迦葉、目連等,未受具戒眾中有一均頭沙彌,于先受籌監拔聖路。阿難白佛言:「彼國之中必無大器熟食,遣干緒負釜先路。」干緒雖是使人,五通以備,揹負萬斛大釜,手提百斛大杓,踴身高飛徑向彼國。

爾時,滿財樓頭遙見,語須摩提言:「我見一人揹負千斛大釜,手提百斛大杓,從空中來,是汝師非?」須摩提言:「此非我師,此是眾僧中使人,名曰干緒,世尊欲來,並使負釜先路。」

爾時,均頭沙彌次後化作五百華樹,人在其上結加趺坐,踴身高飛亦向彼國。滿財樓頭遙見,語須摩提言:「我見五百華樹,人在其上結加趺坐從虛空中來,是汝師非?」須摩提言:「此非我師,此是舍利弗最小沙彌,名字均頭。」周利槃特伽,次後化作五百師子,舉聲一喚飛落走伏,人在其上結加趺坐,踴身高飛徑向彼國。滿財樓頭遙見,問須摩提言:「我見五百師子舉聲一喚飛落走伏,人在其上結加趺坐從虛空中來,是汝師非?」「此非我師,此是如來弟子周利槃特伽。」

佛子羅云次後來,化作五百金翅鳥王,人在其上結加趺坐,踴身高飛徑向彼國。滿財樓頭遙見。問須摩提言:「我見五百金翅鳥王,人在其上結加趺坐從虛空中來,是汝師非?」須摩提女言:「此非我師,此是如來弟子佛子羅云。」

須菩提次後化作五百象王,齊有六牙,被以金鞍,人在其上結加趺坐,踴身騰虛空亦向彼國

Among the monks who had not yet received full ordination was a novice named Juntou. They first received tokens, overseeing and clearing the sacred path. Ananda said to the Buddha, 'That country must not have ready-to-eat food. Please send Ganxu to carry the pot and clear the way first.' Although Ganxu was just a messenger, he possessed the five supernatural powers. He carried a pot of ten thousand hu and held a ladle of one hundred hu, soaring into the sky and flying directly to that country. At that time, Mancai Lou Tou saw from afar and said to Sumati, 'I see a person carrying a pot of a thousand hu and holding a ladle of a hundred hu, flying from the sky. Is that your teacher?' Sumati said, 'This is not my teacher. This is a messenger from the Sangha named Ganxu. The World Honored One is coming, so he is sent to carry the pot and clear the way first.' At that time, the novice Juntou then transformed into five hundred flowering trees, each with a person sitting in the lotus position. They soared into the sky and also flew to that country. Mancai Lou Tou saw from afar and said to Sumati, 'I see five hundred flowering trees, each with a person sitting in the lotus position, flying from the sky. Is that your teacher?' Sumati said, 'This is not my teacher. This is Sariputra's youngest novice, named Juntou.' Zhouli Pantuoqie then transformed into five hundred lions, roaring in unison, flying down, walking, and crouching. Each lion had a person sitting in the lotus position. They soared into the sky and flew directly to that country. Mancai Lou Tou saw from afar and asked Sumati, 'I see five hundred lions roaring in unison, flying down, walking, and crouching. Each lion has a person sitting in the lotus position, flying from the sky. Is that your teacher?' 'This is not my teacher. This is the Tathagata's disciple Zhouli Pantuoqie.' Buddha's son Rahula then came, transforming into five hundred Garuda kings, each with a person sitting in the lotus position. They soared into the sky and flew directly to that country. Mancai Lou Tou saw from afar and asked Sumati, 'I see five hundred Garuda kings, each with a person sitting in the lotus position, flying from the sky. Is that your teacher?' Sumati said, 'This is not my teacher. This is the Tathagata's disciple Buddha's son Rahula.' Subhuti then transformed into five hundred elephant kings, each with six tusks, adorned with golden saddles. Each elephant had a person sitting in the lotus position. They soared into the sky and also flew to that country.

。滿財樓頭遙見,問須摩提言:「我見五百象王齊有六牙被以金鞍,人在其上結加趺坐從空中來,是汝師非?」「此非我師,此是如來弟子須菩提。」

爾時,須摩提女即為長者,而說偈言:

「我師今當來,  光明非此比, 長者一心念,  莫懷余異想。」

爾時,如來知眾生心至時運將會,身披僧伽梨,于虛空之中去地七多羅樹,身色紫金艷光騰赫。阿若車鄰在如來左,舍利弗在如來右,阿難承佛威神覆在如來左,自余比丘或復現神變相百千萬種,彌塞虛空云行到彼

At that time, the Tathagata, knowing the minds of the sentient beings and that the time was approaching, donned his sanghati robe, and rose seven tala trees high into the void, his body radiating a brilliant purple-gold light. Ajnatakaundinya was on the Tathagata's left, Sariputra on the Tathagata's right, and Ananda, empowered by the Buddha's divine might, was again on the Tathagata's left. The other monks manifested miraculous transformations, numbering in the hundreds of thousands, filling the void and moving like clouds towards that place.

爾時,如來還攝聖眾到祇桓精舍,阿難長跪叉手前白佛言:「世尊!此須摩提女有何因緣,恒在大富家生,復當邪網道中,不轉女身今得法眼,城中人民皆悉得道?唯愿世尊,說其往因。」

佛語阿難:「汝等諦聽諦聽,當爲汝說。昔過去迦葉佛時,有一王女,在高樓頭遙發弘誓大愿:『愿我恒大富家生,生常值佛,佈施眾生心不退轉,莫轉女身今得法眼,城中人民悉發弘誓。』崇集大齋積功累德,以此因緣今得值我兼度一切。爾時,阿難!將來大愿不可不發,聞者不可不助。

比丘僧、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷,以及諸天、龍王等八部眾,聽聞佛經后都非常歡喜,信奉並遵照教義,行禮致敬。
