English version The Samagga Sutta Spoken by the Buddha Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Zhuluyan from Tianzhu of Wu Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti, together with twelve hundred and fifty monks and five hundred bodhisattvas. There were also countless kings, people, and gods, dragons, and spirits. At that time, there was a king named Nan, whose name was Fenpodan. He did not believe in the Buddha's teachings but favored external paths. Every day, he would provide meals for over ten thousand Nirgranthas in his palace. King Nan often liked to be arrogant, considering himself to have unparalleled wisdom. He would wrap his abdomen with iron plates, constantly fearing that his wisdom would burst out from his belly. The king wanted to find a wife for his prince, so he asked his ministers: 'Is there anyone in the world as wise as I am? If there is, I want to marry his daughter for my son.' The ministers accepted the king's order and searched throughout the country, finding no one like the king. Knowing that there was no one in the country, they sent messengers to other countries to seek the daughter of a wise person. At that time, the messengers accepted the king's order and went to Shravasti. The messengers asked the people in the country: 'Is there a virtuous person who practices the Way in this country?' The people replied: 'Yes.' The messengers asked: 'What is his name?' The people replied: 'His name is Buddha.' The messengers asked: 'Does the Buddha have a daughter?' The people said: 'The Buddha is a practitioner of the Way and has no daughter.' The messengers asked: 'Who is next?' They replied: 'There is another person named Anathapindika, a great virtuous person who practices the Way, and he has a good daughter, the best in the country.' The messengers asked: 'Why is he considered the best?' The people in the country said: 'He once joined the prince in requesting to buy eighty acres of land to offer to the Buddha, and he also used elephants to transport tens of millions of gold to pay for the land. He does not covet precious treasures but only thinks of doing good.' The messengers, hearing the words of the people in the country, were very happy, knowing that they had obtained information. They returned to their country and reported to the king, saying: 'In Shravasti, there is a virtuous person who greatly loves the Way, named Anathapindika.' King Nan, hearing the messengers' words, wrote a letter and sent the prince and hundreds of officials, with carriages and treasures, to Shravasti. The prince stayed outside the city, and they sent people into the city to Anathapindika's residence.
English version: At that time, the gatekeeper went in and reported to Ananda Bindhi: 'There is a messenger outside.' Ananda Bindhi immediately went out to answer the door himself, and saw that the messenger was black and ugly, like a ghost. Ananda Bindhi was greatly shocked and said, 'Who are you?' The messenger replied, 'I am a messenger from King Nan.' Ananda Bindhi asked, 'What do you seek?' The messenger said, 'I have come to convey an order. Although King Nan has not come to see you in person, he respects and admires you from afar. People often come and go, praising your immeasurable merits. He has heard that you are virtuous and kind, with profound spiritual practice, and that you have a daughter. Therefore, he has come to seek your daughter for the prince. The king has also sent a letter to you.' Ananda Bindhi wanted to scold him, but he restrained himself and did not speak. He invited the messenger in to sit down together, and they exchanged greetings and talked. The messenger then showed him the letter. After Ananda Bindhi finished reading the letter, he replied to the messenger, 'I need to consult with a great person before I can respond. If he agrees, I will tell you the news.' He had the messenger sit and wait, and Ananda Bindhi went to the Buddha. He went before the Buddha, bowed, and then knelt with his palms together, reporting to the Buddha, 'Now King Nan has sent a messenger to my house. The man looks like a black ghost. He says that he wants to seek my daughter, Samagga, for the king's prince. What should I do?' The Buddha said, 'Give her to him.' Ananda Bindhi said, 'The messenger looks like a black ghost, what will the king's prince be like? I have heard from the Buddha that King Nan only believes in the Nigantas, who are naked, without clothes, and look ugly and dark. Will they frighten my daughter?' The Buddha said, 'No, give her to him. You should know that this is a karmic connection. Samagga should liberate 80,000 people in the naked country.' Ananda Bindhi did not dare to ask the Buddha again, and with resentment in his heart, he went back and told the messenger, 'You have come from afar to seek my daughter on the king's order. Very well, I agree to give my daughter to you.' When the messenger heard Ananda Bindhi's words, he immediately returned to the outside of the city, to the prince, and together they went to Ananda Bindhi's residence. They got out of the carriage, and presented gold, silver, and betrothal gifts to Ananda Bindhi. Then they invited guests and feasted for seven days. Ananda Bindhi sent Samagga off with countless servants, clothes, and treasures. The prince then took Samagga back to his own country. At that time, King Nan was very happy to see his daughter-in-law return. He invited his teacher, Niganta Jothaputra, and 12,000 disciples to the palace for a meal. King Nan's wife and the prince personally set out the food.
English version: At that time, the king called Samagga to come out, intending for her to distribute the food to the teachers and to bow together. Samagga had just reached the third gate when she saw from afar that the Niganthas were all naked, without any clothes covering them. Samagga was greatly shocked, feeling that they were no different from dogs and livestock. She covered her face with both hands and spat at them from a distance, then returned to her room, refusing to come out again. The Niganthas were all angry at Samagga and told the king, 'Where did you find this bewitching and inauspicious person in the palace? Quickly send her away. If you don't send her away, she will ruin the entire kingdom.' The Niganthas refused to eat any more and were about to leave. The king apologized to the teachers, saying, 'I will definitely send her away for the masters. She will not appear in the palace again tomorrow.' After the Niganthas finished eating, they left. That day, the crown prince went to Samagga himself. At that time, Samagga was very angry and ordered the maid to close the door. After four or five days, the crown prince did not dare to go again. The queen asked the crown prince, 'Why don't you go?' The crown prince remained silent. After the queen understood the reason, she went to Samagga herself and said, 'I married you for my son. Now you should serve my son. Why do you insult my son like this?' Samagga replied, 'The teachers your son serves, as well as the people of the whole country, are no different from dogs and livestock.' The queen was very ashamed and went back to tell the king, 'Your Majesty! You consider yourself to have unparalleled wisdom and think that there is no one in the country who can satisfy you. That's why you troubled your ministers to travel eight thousand miles to seek a wife. Now this wife is fearless, insulting my son and even scolding me to my face, saying that we are like dogs and livestock.' Upon hearing the queen's words, the king went to Samagga himself. At that time, Samagga was very arrogant and refused to come out to bow to the king. The king asked Samagga from a distance, 'I traveled eight thousand miles to marry you because you were virtuous. Now you have insulted my teachers and also insulted the queen and the crown prince to their faces. Shouldn't you be punished?' Samagga replied, 'Yes. The king's teachers, the queen, the crown prince, and the people of the whole country are no different from dogs and livestock.'
English version: The king, upon hearing this, exclaimed in alarm, 'This is a mere woman! Now she humiliates me like this, I fear she will generate wisdom from her belly and encase my abdomen with iron plates. I feed over ten thousand Taoists daily, who can compare to me? And now you dare to insult me to my face?' Samagadhi replied, 'The teachers whom the people of your kingdom serve often have no clothes, viewing each other naked. What kind of morality is that? Even if they had morality, it would not be worthy of respect, let alone having none. O King! Even if you feed ten thousand of such people daily, they are all those whom I do not respect, I often despise them.' At that time, King Nan was very perplexed, thinking, 'Who should I consult about this matter?' So he went to visit Nigandha Nataputta, bowed to the teacher and said, 'I married a wife from Shravasti. Recently, she has been misbehaving, not only humiliating the master but also arrogantly insulting me, the queen, and the prince, comparing us to dogs and livestock. Although she is my wife, she does not treat me with the respect due to a husband. What should I do now?' The teacher told the king, 'Go ask her again, say: 'What is the difference between what the people of your country serve and what the people of our country serve?' Ask her like that. When you go again, do not get angry, ask her slowly, and she will naturally answer you.' The king accepted the teacher's instruction, and according to what the teacher said, he went to Samagadhi and asked, 'What is it that the people of your country serve that is superior to what the people of our country serve?' Samagadhi said, 'What the people of our country serve is the most honorable. Men and women all have clothes to wear, the noble and the humble are separate, and their bodies do not see each other. Now there are Buddhas with great and small names, teaching billions of people, all of whom are able to transcend the world and enter the path of Nirvana, not burning in fire, not drowning in water. He can control the sun and moon of the three thousand great chiliocosms, as well as the twelve billion universes, transforming and entering without gaps, knowing the past, present, and future. His body has thirty-two major marks and eighty minor marks, his morality is all-encompassing, and all the heavenly emperors and people come to bow and pay homage.' Upon hearing Samagadhi's words, the king was overjoyed and leaped with joy. At that time, King Nan said to Samagadhi, 'Can I see the Buddha you serve?' Samagadhi said, 'I can invite him for the king from afar, and he will arrive immediately.' The king said, 'Excellent! It is eight thousand miles away, how can you invite the Buddha?' Samagadhi said, 'There is no need for the king to send someone to invite him, just sincerely burn incense and invite him from afar. The Buddha has supernatural powers and knows what people think in their hearts. The king, the queen, and the prince should all follow behind me.'
English version: Then Samagada descended from the high platform, adjusted his robes, and knelt towards the country of Shravasti, burning incense. He prostrated himself with his head to the ground and said, 'Now, King Nanda does not know that there is a Buddha in the world. For the sake of all the people, and out of compassion for their many toils and sufferings, I wish that the Buddha, tomorrow morning, would lead the monks and graciously come to King Nanda's place to receive offerings.' As soon as he finished speaking, the smoke of the incense reached the Buddha's location, circled him three times, and transformed into a canopy of incense above the Buddha. At that time, the Buddha was preaching to countless thousands of people. Then, Ananda stepped forward, knelt with his palms together, and said to the Buddha, 'What kind of response is this? May the Buddha explain its meaning.' The Buddha told Ananda, 'King Nanda and Samagada will invite the Buddha and the monks tomorrow morning. Samagada has a sincere heart and wants the people of Nanda to abandon their wrong views and turn to the right path. The incense came here to invite the Buddha.' At that time, the Buddha told Mahamogallana, instructing the monks that they should go to Samagada's place in Nanda to receive offerings the next morning. Mahamogallana received the Buddha's teaching and immediately told the monks, 'Tomorrow we will go to accept the invitation, do not do anything else.' Then Samagada had the king, queen, prince, and all the palace women fast, burn incense, lay out seats, and prepare all the food and utensils. Samagada knew that the Buddha was coming, so he stood in the middle courtyard with the king, queen, prince, palace women, and all the Niganthas. Samagada told the king, queen, and prince, 'Follow behind me. Now the Arhats will come first, and the Buddha will come last. Do not be alarmed or afraid, just follow what I do.' Then Samagada knelt again, burned incense, and said, 'The food is ready, may the Buddha partake.' The Buddha knew what Samagada was thinking, so he told the monks, 'Today we will go to Nanda to eat. Each of you should use your supernatural powers freely.' The monks immediately accepted the teaching. Some transformed into dragons, tigers, phoenixes, peacocks, cows, doves, and pigeons. Some transformed into hundreds of birds, owls, and others into canopies. The monks all sat within them, each different. At that time, the Buddha himself sat in a lion-shaped canopy, and together with twelve hundred and fifty monks, five hundred Bodhisattvas, and gods, ghosts, and dragons, he flew from the sky with supernatural powers. As soon as they arrived in Nanda, the Buddha emitted light, and the earth shook greatly. The Arhats and Bodhisattvas each transformed and came down first. The people of Nanda were greatly frightened by this transformation. The king asked Samagada, 'Is this the Buddha?' He replied, 'It is not the Buddha.' Samagada told the king, 'Do not be afraid, these are the Buddha's disciples.'
English version: The Buddha arrived last, with thirty-two auspicious marks and eighty excellent characteristics on his body. In a short while, the Buddha descended from above, with Śakra and the Four Heavenly Kings leading the way. The gods played musical instruments and sang praises to the Buddha. Samagga and the king, queen, and prince immediately took flowers and incense to welcome the Buddha, bowed to him, and then together entered the palace and took their seats. The Bodhisattvas and Arhats all sat in front, arranged according to their seniority. Samagga then had the king, queen, and prince wash their hands, and then the meal was set. Many people from the country came to watch, and the king ordered the ministers to close the palace gates. The people, seeing the king close the gates, were very angry and, holding axes, wanted to break down the gates. The Buddha, knowing this from afar, said, 'What I teach is to make people do good. Now the people of the difficult country have all come to watch, but the king has closed the gates.' At that time, the Buddha, wanting everyone to see him, transformed the walls of the palace gates into the color of crystal, so that the inside and outside could see each other. The people of the difficult country, seeing the Buddha and the Bodhisattvas and Arhats, were all very happy. At that time, the Buddha had an Arhat named Pindola, who was sitting on a mountain and suddenly forgot that he had arrived in the difficult country. Pindola had been sitting for a long time and was about to sew his clothes with a needle. He stuck the needle into the ground, and the thread and the clothes became connected. At this time, the Buddha was already sitting in the palace of the difficult king. Pindola then flew to the difficult country using his supernatural powers, and the mountain followed behind Pindola. At that time, there was a pregnant woman in the country who, seeing the mountain coming, dark and oppressive, was afraid of falling onto it and was terrified, causing her to miscarry. The Buddha, knowing this from afar, had Mahāmaudgalyāyana fly over using his supernatural powers to ask, 'Pindola! What is behind you?' Pindola looked back and saw the mountain, and with his hand, he threw the mountain back to its original place, eight thousand miles away. At that time, Pindola came before the Buddha, bowed to him, and then sat down. The Buddha said to Pindola, 'I teach all people in the world to liberate themselves from suffering. Now that you have missed the opportunity and killed a person. Human life is of utmost importance, and this is not what my teachings like. From now on, you are not allowed to eat with me or attend public gatherings. If you want to stay here, you must wait until Maitreya Buddha appears before you can enter Nirvana.' Pindola, hearing the Buddha say this, was silent and sorrowful, and he reproached himself. After eating, he got up, bowed to the Buddha, and bid farewell to the Bodhisattvas and Arhats, and then entered the mountains. At that time, the national teacher of the difficult country, Nigrantha Jñātaputra, said to the Buddha, 'Can we compete in our doctrines? If I am not as good as you, I will jump into the well.'
English version: The Buddha said, 'Excellent! No need for much talk. If one cannot answer three questions, they should be thrown into a well.' Nigandha Nataputta said, 'Excellent!' The Buddha immediately asked, 'What do you do when reciting scriptures?' Nigandha Nataputta said, 'When I recite scriptures, I crawl on the ground.' The Buddha said, 'Crawling on the ground is the behavior of a dog, only dogs crawl on the ground.' Nigandha Nataputta could not answer, and his disciples were all angry. The others thought that Cīna was speaking correctly about this matter, and they all went back to blame their teacher, wanting to throw him into the well. His teacher was very frightened, using both hands to brace himself against the ground, refusing to enter the well. The Buddha said, 'Let him go.' At that time, a great fire naturally arose in the courtyard, its flames reaching the seventh Brahma heaven. Within the fire, a thousand-petaled lotus flower naturally appeared, and on the flower were five hundred Brahma gods, all with their hands clasped, kneeling and asking the Buddha, 'Who receives the most merit from offerings? Who receives the least merit from offerings?' The Buddha answered the Brahma gods, 'For example, if you scatter five kinds of grains into a fire, will they grow?' The Brahma gods said, 'They will not grow.' The Buddha said, 'The offerings made to the Nigandhas by the king before and after are like scattering five grains into a fire, they will never grow; today, offerings made to the Buddha and all the Bodhisattvas and Arhats will bring immeasurable merit. It is like a person having good land and good seeds, and the heavens sending timely rain, why worry about not growing? Now the Buddha is the field of merit for all people, and whatever they sow, they will surely achieve their wishes. Foolish people like to teach others to follow external paths, and these people, when their lives end, will all fall into the Tai Mountain hell and suffer greatly, and it will be too late for regret. The people before have not yet come out because of doing this, and the people after are teaching others to do the same. The people of the world are foolish, only deceiving and teasing each other, so they do not know the true path. If there are wise people, they should learn the true path, which is not born, does not age, does not get sick, and does not die, this is the great path of Nirvana. There are ninety-six paths in the world, but none can compare to the Buddha's path.' The Buddha said, 'If you use all the branches of trees and bird feathers in the world to write Buddhist scriptures, the branches and feathers will all be used up, but the Buddha's wisdom will never be exhausted; if you grind ink as large as Mount Sumeru, and use the water of the four seas to dip the brush, the ink of Mount Sumeru and the water of the four seas will all be used up, but the Buddha's wisdom will never be exhausted.' The five hundred Brahma gods, upon hearing the Buddha's words, immediately exclaimed, 'Excellent! It is indeed as the Buddha has said.' Then the five hundred Brahma gods suddenly disappeared. At that time, King Nanda's family of three hundred people, twelve hundred palace women, and five hundred ministers, seeing the Buddha's transformations, all rejoiced and were delighted, and all generated the mind of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.
English version: At that time, two thousand Brahmins shaved their heads and beards, all becoming monks, and immediately all attained the Arhat path. Twelve thousand Nirgranthas were immediately liberated, some attaining the Srotapanna path, some attaining the Sakadagami path, and some attaining the Anagami path. Furthermore, sixty-four thousand common people in the country all believed in the Buddha's teachings, received the five precepts, and all became Upasakas. After the Buddha finished speaking the sutra, he, together with the Bodhisattvas and Arhats, manifested supernatural powers and flew away. At that time, King Nanda, his queen, the crown prince, ministers, and the people were all greatly delighted, and they all placed their heads on the ground, bowing to the Buddha from afar.
