聞如是:

一時婆伽婆在舍衛城祇樹給孤獨園。爾時,僧伽羅摩長者子,乃至六出家為道便,往至世尊所,頭面禮足在一面立。時僧伽羅摩長者子白世尊言:「愿世尊聽出家學道,時僧伽羅摩得出家學道。」時,世尊告僧伽羅摩比丘:「汝當行二法。云何為二?止觀是也。」僧伽羅摩比丘白佛言:「甚解世尊!甚解如來!」世尊告曰:「我取要而說,云何言甚解耶?」僧伽羅摩白佛言:「止者諸結永息,觀者世尊,觀一切諸法。」世尊告曰:「善哉善哉!僧伽羅摩!我取要說法,能廣分別。」時僧伽羅摩即從佛受如此教,在閑靜處而思惟此義,在閑靜處思惟此義已,族姓子剃除鬚髮著三法衣,以信堅固出家學道,修無上梵行,盡生死原,梵行已立,所作已辦,更不復受母胞胎。時,尊者僧伽羅摩便成阿羅漢果。

時,僧伽羅摩未出家時有婦母在,聞女夫出家,僧伽羅摩長者子乃至七反,于如來所出家學道,更不習欲,舍家業僕從。時,僧伽羅摩婦母便將女詣僧伽羅摩比丘所,在前默然立,再三嘆息,便作是語:「汝僧伽羅摩!無義無禮,不端思惟舍我女,于如來所出家學道,諸有舍衛城王及大臣長者婆羅門剎利,見我女者悉皆迷惑莫知所在,如常懷敬念愿與居止,汝不思惟而棄我女

English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. At that time, the son of the elder Sangharama, having six reasons to leave home and practice the Way, went to where the World Honored One was, bowed his head to the ground at the Buddha's feet, and stood to one side. Then, the son of the elder Sangharama said to the World Honored One, 'May the World Honored One allow me to leave home and study the Way.' Thereupon, Sangharama left home and studied the Way. At that time, the World Honored One said to the bhikkhu Sangharama, 'You should practice two dharmas. What are the two? They are cessation and contemplation.' The bhikkhu Sangharama said to the Buddha, 'I deeply understand the World Honored One! I deeply understand the Tathagata!' The World Honored One said, 'I spoke briefly, how can you say you deeply understand?' Sangharama said to the Buddha, 'Cessation is the eternal cessation of all fetters, and contemplation, World Honored One, is the contemplation of all dharmas.' The World Honored One said, 'Excellent, excellent! Sangharama! I spoke briefly, but you can widely distinguish.' Then, Sangharama received this teaching from the Buddha, and in a quiet place, he contemplated its meaning. Having contemplated its meaning in a quiet place, this son of a good family shaved his head and beard, put on the three robes, and with firm faith, left home to study the Way, cultivating the unsurpassed pure conduct, exhausting the source of birth and death. The pure conduct was established, what needed to be done was done, and he would no longer be subject to the womb. At that time, the venerable Sangharama attained the fruit of Arhatship. At that time, when Sangharama had not yet left home, he had a wife and mother at home. Hearing that her son-in-law had left home, the son of the elder Sangharama, even seven times, left home to study the Way at the Tathagata's place, no longer desiring sensual pleasures, abandoning his family business and servants. Then, Sangharama's wife and mother took their daughter to where the bhikkhu Sangharama was, stood silently before him, sighed repeatedly, and then said, 'You, Sangharama! You are without righteousness or propriety, without thinking, you abandoned my daughter, and left home to study the Way at the Tathagata's place. Those kings, ministers, elders, Brahmins, and Kshatriyas of Shravasti, seeing my daughter, are all confused and do not know where she is. They often hold her in respect and wish to live with her, but you, without thinking, abandoned my daughter.'


。」時尊者僧伽羅摩便說偈言:

「此外更無要,  此外亦無比, 此外更無觀,  善慮無過此。」

爾時,尊者僧伽羅摩婦母,語僧伽羅摩言:「我女意有何咎何過?乃使汝捐棄,于如來所出家學道?」時,尊者僧伽羅摩,便說偈曰:

「惡口常誹謗,  嫉姤心懷奸, 瞋恚喜妄語,  如來說大惡。」

爾時,尊者僧伽羅摩婦及婦母,從頭至足皆悉觀,此比丘從足至頭亦復悉觀,我尊者僧伽羅摩足,便作是言:「愿尊者,懺悔我愚癡所為亦不別真。」僧伽羅摩言:「愿妹常安隱壽命延長。」時,僧伽羅摩婦便語母言:「僧伽羅摩稱我為妹,此必不復樂欲。」便語僧伽羅摩言:「愿尊者僧伽羅摩,懺悔愚癡所為然不別真。」僧伽羅摩言:「愿妹安隱壽命延長。」時,僧伽羅摩婦及婦母,頭面禮足繞三匝,再三嘆息便退去。

時,尊者阿難,從舍衛城遙見尊者僧伽羅摩婦及婦母,見已便作是語:「諸妹見僧伽羅摩不耶?」僧伽羅摩婦對曰:「見僧伽羅摩亦與言語,然我願不果。」時,尊者阿難,默然而行。時尊者阿難還自詣房,收攝衣缽澡手洗足,以尼師檀著肩上詣世尊所,頭面禮足在一面坐,須臾退坐以此因緣具白世尊。爾時,世尊便說偈曰:

「腐樹求萌芽,  火中求水渧, 水中而求火,  無慾而求欲。」

爾時,世尊告諸比丘:「我聲聞中第一比丘能降伏魔,所謂僧伽羅摩比丘是。」

爾時,諸比丘聞佛所說,歡喜奉行

English version: At that time, the Venerable Sangharama spoke these verses: 'There is nothing more important than this, there is nothing comparable to this, there is nothing more to observe than this, and there is no better consideration than this.' Then, the mother-in-law of Venerable Sangharama said to Sangharama, 'What fault or wrong has my daughter committed that you have abandoned her to leave home and study the Way with the Tathagata?' At that time, Venerable Sangharama spoke these verses: 'Evil words constantly slander, jealousy harbors deceit, anger delights in falsehood, the Tathagata says these are great evils.' At that time, the wife and mother-in-law of Venerable Sangharama carefully observed him from head to toe, and the bhikkhu also carefully observed them from foot to head. The wife of Venerable Sangharama then said, 'Venerable one, please forgive my foolish actions, for I could not distinguish truth from falsehood.' Sangharama said, 'May you, sister, always be peaceful and have a long life.' Then, the wife of Sangharama said to her mother, 'Sangharama calls me sister, he must no longer have any desire.' She then said to Sangharama, 'Venerable Sangharama, please forgive my foolish actions, for I could not distinguish truth from falsehood.' Sangharama said, 'May you, sister, be peaceful and have a long life.' At that time, the wife and mother-in-law of Sangharama bowed their heads to his feet, circumambulated him three times, sighed repeatedly, and then departed. At that time, Venerable Ananda, from afar in Shravasti, saw the wife and mother-in-law of Venerable Sangharama. Upon seeing them, he said, 'Have you sisters seen Sangharama?' The wife of Sangharama replied, 'We have seen Sangharama and spoken with him, but my wish has not been fulfilled.' At that time, Venerable Ananda silently walked away. Then, Venerable Ananda returned to his own room, gathered his robes and bowl, washed his hands and feet, placed the nisidana on his shoulder, went to the World Honored One, bowed his head to his feet, sat to one side, and after a while, withdrew and sat down, explaining the cause of this matter in detail to the World Honored One. At that time, the World Honored One spoke these verses: 'Seeking sprouts on a rotten tree, seeking drops of water in fire, seeking fire in water, seeking desire without desire.' At that time, the World Honored One told the bhikkhus, 'Among my disciples, the first bhikkhu who can subdue Mara is the bhikkhu Sangharama.' At that time, the bhikkhus, having heard what the Buddha had said, joyfully practiced it.

The Sutra of the Buddha on the Six Transgressions of a Wealthy Man's Son Leaving Home
