舍利弗摩訶目連游四衢經

聞如是:

一時,釋氏舍夷阿摩勒藥樹園。爾時,賢者舍利弗、摩訶目乾連比丘,遊行諸國經歷一年,與大比丘眾俱,比丘五百,還至藥樹,欲見世尊。是等來還,比丘眾多各共語言,各各著衣持缽,其聲高大音響暢逸。佛以預知,問賢者阿難:「此何比丘?揚大音聲其響洋逸,如捕魚師揚聲驗逸?」

阿難白佛:「唯然世尊!舍利弗、目乾連,游止諸國經歷一載,大比丘眾五百人俱至於藥樹,見諸比丘各各談語,著衣持缽,語言聲高音響暢溢。」

佛語阿難:「勿令比丘來至吾許。」阿難白佛:「唯然。」奉命從座起,稽首佛足繞佛三匝而退,往詣舍利弗、目連比丘所,言語敘鬧卻住一面,謂賢者舍利弗、目連:「令余比丘勿詣佛所,世尊有教。」舍利弗、目連聞阿難言,即從坐起往詣佛所,稽首足下繞佛三匝,速去衣缽,出詣藥樹與比丘眾俱。

爾時,釋種諸優婆塞,悉聚會有所講一義,遙見舍利弗、大目連,比丘眾俱,著衣持缽,晝日平旦詣于藥樹下,「五百比丘眾俱,吾等寧可往問起居。」時,諸釋種優婆塞眾,即起速往詣舍利弗目連所,前稽首足下卻住一面。

時,諸清信士問舍利弗、目連:「何故著衣持缽,晝日而往于藥樹間?」舍利弗、目連答釋種清信士:「吾等游諸國來還詣比丘眾,皆以疲倦今此露住

English version Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Shala tree garden of the Shakya clan. At that time, the venerable Shariputra and Maha Maudgalyayana, having traveled through various countries for a year, returned to the Shala tree garden with a large assembly of five hundred monks, desiring to see the World Honored One. Upon their return, many monks were conversing amongst themselves, each putting on their robes and carrying their bowls, their voices loud and clamorous. The Buddha, knowing this beforehand, asked the venerable Ananda, 'Who are these monks? They are making such a loud noise, their clamor is like that of fishermen shouting while fishing?' Ananda replied to the Buddha, 'Yes, World Honored One! It is Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, who have traveled through various countries for a year, and have come to the Shala tree garden with five hundred monks. They saw the other monks conversing, putting on their robes and carrying their bowls, hence their voices are loud and clamorous.' The Buddha told Ananda, 'Do not let these monks come to me.' Ananda replied to the Buddha, 'Yes.' He received the Buddha's command, rose from his seat, bowed to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated the Buddha three times, and then withdrew. He went to where Shariputra and Maudgalyayana were, and told them, 'Please do not let the other monks go to see the Buddha, the World Honored One has instructed so.' Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, upon hearing Ananda's words, immediately rose from their seats, went to where the Buddha was, bowed at his feet, circumambulated him three times, quickly put down their robes and bowls, and left for the Shala tree garden, joining the other monks. At that time, the lay followers of the Shakya clan were gathered together discussing the Dharma. From afar, they saw Shariputra and Maha Maudgalyayana, along with the monks, wearing their robes and carrying their bowls, coming to the Shala tree garden in the daytime. 'There are five hundred monks here, we should go and greet them.' Therefore, the lay followers of the Shakya clan immediately rose and went to where Shariputra and Maudgalyayana were, bowed at their feet, and stood to one side. At that time, these devout laymen asked Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, 'Why are you wearing your robes and carrying your bowls, coming to the Shala tree garden during the day?' Shariputra and Maudgalyayana replied to the lay followers of the Shakya clan, 'We have returned to the assembly of monks after traveling through various countries, and we are all tired, so we are resting here in the open.'


。」諸清信士答曰:「唯諸賢者!吾等於斯具足施坐然燈為明,唯愿屈神及比丘眾,若謂佛者乃可舍退。」賢者舍利弗、大目乾連,嘿然可之,尋往所施坐其床榻,則入其室與眾僧俱坐。

爾時,釋種諸清信士,往詣佛所稽首足下叉手白佛:「我等請求世尊求哀安住,唯然大聖!信比丘眾。所以者何?于彼比丘諸漏盡者,已得羅漢所作已辦,吾不懷疑。此等比丘亦不猶豫,其有比丘幼小新學初出家者,入是法律未久,其心移易或能變異,譬如世間暴水卒來無所遮隔。如是世尊!新學比丘初出家者,入是法律未久,其心移易或能變異,不覲大聖恐改志行。」

於時梵天忽然來下,即住佛前叉手白言:「我等請求世尊,求哀安住,唯然大聖!信比丘眾。所以者何?于眾比丘諸漏盡者,已得羅漢所作已辦,吾不疑。此等比丘亦不猶豫,其有比丘幼小新學初出家者,入是法律未久,其心移易或能變異。」佛即然可梵天王。賢者摩訶目乾連,天眼徹視遙見佛心可之,請求睹大聖德。如大枰閣若大講堂,凈潔涂治開諸軒窗,日東初出入于軒窗光照西壁,賢者目連天眼徹視,遙見世尊相好巍巍,時目乾連尋語比丘眾:「諸賢者!當起著衣持缽,梵天請求諸幼小各詣。」比丘曰:「唯當受教。」速正衣服,隨舍利弗、大目連等往詣佛所,稽首足下退坐一面

English version: The devout lay followers replied, 'Venerable ones! We have prepared seats and lit lamps for illumination here. We only wish that you and the monastic community would condescend to come. If it were the Buddha, we would then withdraw.' The venerable Sariputra and Maha Moggallana silently agreed, then went to the seats they had been offered, sat on the couches, and entered the room to sit with the monks. At that time, the devout lay followers of the Sakya clan went to where the Buddha was, bowed at his feet, and with palms joined, reported to the Buddha, 'We beseech the World Honored One, we beg you to abide in peace, and we wish that the Great Sage would trust the monastic community. Why is this? Because among those monks, those whose defilements are exhausted, who have attained Arhatship, and whose tasks are completed, we have no doubt. These monks also have no hesitation. However, those monks who are young, newly learning, and newly ordained, who have not been in the Dharma for long, their minds are easily swayed and may change, just like a sudden downpour in the world that cannot be stopped. Thus, World Honored One, those newly learning monks, newly ordained, who have not been in the Dharma for long, their minds are easily swayed and may change. If they do not see the Great Sage, they fear their resolve may change.' At that time, Brahma suddenly descended, stood before the Buddha, and with palms joined, reported, 'We beseech the World Honored One, we beg you to abide in peace, and we wish that the Great Sage would trust the monastic community. Why is this? Because among those monks, those whose defilements are exhausted, who have attained Arhatship, and whose tasks are completed, we have no doubt. These monks also have no hesitation. However, those monks who are young, newly learning, and newly ordained, who have not been in the Dharma for long, their minds are easily swayed and may change.' The Buddha then agreed to Brahma's request. The venerable Maha Moggallana, with his divine eye, saw from afar that the Buddha's mind had agreed, and requested to behold the Great Sage's virtue. Like a tall pavilion or a great lecture hall, cleaned and painted, with all the windows open, the sun rose from the east, and the sunlight shone from the windows onto the west wall. The venerable Moggallana, with his divine eye, saw from afar the majestic appearance of the World Honored One. Then Moggallana immediately told the monastic community, 'Venerable ones! You should rise, put on your robes, and take your bowls. Brahma requests that all the young monks go.' The monks replied, 'We will obey.' They quickly adjusted their robes, and followed Sariputra, Maha Moggallana, and others to where the Buddha was, bowed at his feet, and then sat down to one side.

於時,世尊告舍利弗:「吾亦前世供比丘眾,於心云何?」舍利弗,心自念言:「世尊宿世供比丘眾,於此大聖,比丘質樸,于求望知節行安常志精進,佛天中天則為法王,調諸不調然當受教,諸比丘眾舉動輕飄,今日大聖慈愍眾僧。」佛言:「善哉善哉!舍利弗!正當念此蠲除惡念。所以者何?誰為比丘眾去諸重擔?唯如來耳無所不住,及舍利弗、摩訶目乾連。」

時,佛告大目連曰:「於心云何?誰敬比丘眾?誰制比丘眾?」我心念言:「今佛世尊敬制比丘眾,唯然大聖!此比丘眾或有質樸少求知足,或不能者,自謂行安精進無懈,如來法王自應當然,吾亦如是。」佛言:「且止,勿有斯念!當更異念。所以者何?於是目連,誰能堪任去諸重擔?唯如來耳,及舍利弗、大目乾連。

「以信渡流氾,  無放逸為船, 聖諦濟苦患,  智慧究竟渡。」

佛分別是語時,六十比丘漏盡意解,無數比丘遠塵離垢,諸法眼生。

佛說如是,諸比丘、清信士、天、龍、鬼神,莫不歡喜

現代漢語譯本: 當時,世尊告訴舍利弗:『我前世也供養過比丘僧眾,你心中如何看待?』舍利弗心中想:『世尊前世供養比丘僧眾,對於這位大聖人來說,比丘們質樸,在求取和慾望方面知道節制,行為安穩,志向精進,佛是天中之天,是法王,調伏那些不被調伏的人,他們應當接受教誨。這些比丘僧眾舉動輕浮,今天大聖人慈悲憐憫眾僧。』佛說:『好啊,好啊!舍利弗!你應當這樣想,去除惡念。為什麼呢?誰能為比丘僧眾去除重擔?只有如來,無所執著,以及舍利弗、摩訶目犍連。』 當時,佛告訴大目犍連說:『你心中如何看待?誰尊敬比丘僧眾?誰制約比丘僧眾?』我心中想:『現在佛世尊尊敬並制約比丘僧眾,是的,大聖人!這些比丘僧眾有的質樸少欲知足,有的不能做到,自認為行為安穩精進不懈怠,如來是法王,自然應當如此,我也是這樣認為的。』佛說:『先停下,不要有這種想法!應當有不同的想法。為什麼呢?目犍連,誰能承擔去除所有重擔的責任?只有如來,以及舍利弗、大目犍連。』 『以信心渡過洪流,以不放逸為船,以聖諦救濟苦難,以智慧最終渡過。』 佛分別開示時,六十位比丘漏盡意解,無數比丘遠離塵垢,生起諸法之眼。 佛說完這些話,比丘們、清信士、天、龍、鬼神,沒有不歡喜的。

English version: At that time, the World Honored One said to Sariputra, 'I also made offerings to the assembly of monks in my past lives. What do you think in your heart?' Sariputra thought in his heart, 'The World Honored One made offerings to the assembly of monks in his past lives. For this great sage, the monks are simple, know moderation in seeking and desires, their conduct is stable, their aspirations are diligent. The Buddha is the king of gods, the king of Dharma, subduing those who are not subdued, and they should receive teachings. These monks act frivolously, and today the great sage is compassionate towards the assembly.' The Buddha said, 'Excellent, excellent! Sariputra! You should think this way and eliminate evil thoughts. Why? Who can remove the heavy burdens for the assembly of monks? Only the Tathagata, who is without attachment, and Sariputra and Maha Maudgalyayana.' At that time, the Buddha said to Maha Maudgalyayana, 'What do you think in your heart? Who respects the assembly of monks? Who restrains the assembly of monks?' I thought in my heart, 'Now the World Honored Buddha respects and restrains the assembly of monks. Yes, great sage! Some of these monks are simple, with few desires and content, while others cannot achieve this, thinking themselves to be stable and diligent without laziness. The Tathagata is the king of Dharma, and it should naturally be so, and I think so too.' The Buddha said, 'Stop for now, do not have such thoughts! You should have different thoughts. Why? Maudgalyayana, who can bear the responsibility of removing all heavy burdens? Only the Tathagata, and Sariputra and Maha Maudgalyayana.' 'Cross the flood with faith, use non-negligence as a boat, use the noble truths to relieve suffering, and ultimately cross over with wisdom.' When the Buddha explained these teachings separately, sixty monks attained the exhaustion of outflows and understanding, and countless monks were freed from defilements, and the eye of Dharma arose. When the Buddha finished speaking these words, the monks, the lay devotees, gods, dragons, and spirits, all rejoiced.
