聞如是:

一時,婆伽婆在舍衛城祇樹給孤獨園。彼時有異婆羅門,有一子命終愛念不離。彼命終亦不能食,亦不能飲,亦不著衣亦不塗香,但至冢間而啼泣,彼啼泣憶念在抱上。於是彼婆羅門彷徉而行至世尊所,到已共世尊面相慰勞。面相慰勞已,彼婆羅門卻坐一面已。世尊告曰:「何以故?汝婆羅門諸根不常定?」

「此瞿曇!我意根云何意根當定?我有一子而命終,愛念不離。彼命終,我不能食、不能飲、不著衣、不塗香,我但在家啼泣,啼泣時憶念在抱上。」

「如是如是。婆羅門!此婆羅門!愛生已則有憂戚苦不樂。」

「云何,瞿曇!豈當爾?愛生已,當有憂戚苦不樂耶?此瞿曇!愛生已,當有歡喜愛念。」再三,世尊告彼婆羅門曰:「如是如是。婆羅門!此婆羅門!愛生已,則有憂戚啼泣不樂。」再三,彼婆羅門白世尊曰:「云何,瞿曇!豈當爾?愛生已,有憂戚不樂耶?此瞿曇!愛生已,但有歡喜愛念

現代漢語譯本 我聽聞是這樣的: 一時,佛陀在舍衛城的祇樹給孤獨園。當時有一位婆羅門,他有一個兒子去世了,他因為愛念不捨而無法釋懷。他兒子死後,他吃不下飯,喝不下水,不穿衣服,也不塗香,只是跑到墳地哭泣,哭泣時回憶著抱著兒子的情景。於是這位婆羅門徘徊著走到世尊那裡,到了之後與世尊互相問候。問候完畢,這位婆羅門退坐在一旁。世尊問他說:『為什麼?你這位婆羅門,你的心神如此不定?』 『這位瞿曇!我的心神怎麼能安定呢?我有一個兒子去世了,我愛念不捨。他死後,我吃不下飯,喝不下水,不穿衣服,也不塗香,我只是在家哭泣,哭泣時回憶著抱著他的情景。』 『是這樣的,是這樣的。婆羅門!這位婆羅門!愛產生后,就會有憂愁、悲傷和不快樂。』 『怎麼會這樣呢,瞿曇!難道是這樣嗎?愛產生后,會有憂愁、悲傷和不快樂嗎?這位瞿曇!愛產生后,應該只有歡喜和愛念啊。』世尊再三告訴這位婆羅門說:『是這樣的,是這樣的。婆羅門!這位婆羅門!愛產生后,就會有憂愁、哭泣和不快樂。』這位婆羅門再三對世尊說:『怎麼會這樣呢,瞿曇!難道是這樣嗎?愛產生后,會有憂愁和不快樂嗎?這位瞿曇!愛產生后,應該只有歡喜和愛念啊。』

English version The Sutra of the Brahman's Son Who Died, and Whose Love and Attachment Did Not Cease Translated by the An Shigao, a Shramana from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in Shravasti. At that time, there was a certain Brahman who had a son who had died, and he could not let go of his love and attachment. After his son's death, he could not eat, nor drink, nor wear clothes, nor apply perfume. He would only go to the cemetery and weep, recalling the times he held his son in his arms. Then, this Brahman wandered and went to where the World Honored One was. Having arrived, he exchanged greetings with the World Honored One. After the greetings, the Brahman sat down to one side. The World Honored One said, 'Why is it, Brahman, that your senses are so unsettled?' 'This Gautama! How can my mind be settled? I had a son who died, and I cannot let go of my love and attachment. After his death, I cannot eat, nor drink, nor wear clothes, nor apply perfume. I only weep at home, recalling the times I held him in my arms.' 'It is so, it is so. Brahman! This Brahman! When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and unhappiness.' 'How can that be, Gautama! Is it really so? When love arises, will there be sorrow, grief, and unhappiness? This Gautama! When love arises, there should only be joy and affection.' Again and again, the World Honored One told the Brahman, 'It is so, it is so. Brahman! This Brahman! When love arises, there is sorrow, weeping, and unhappiness.' Again and again, the Brahman said to the World Honored One, 'How can that be, Gautama! Is it really so? When love arises, will there be sorrow and unhappiness? This Gautama! When love arises, there should only be joy and affection.'


。」於是彼婆羅門聞世尊所說,亦不樂、不說非。不樂、不然可已,從坐起便還。彼時祇桓門外有諸戲人共戲,彼婆羅門遙見祇桓門外有諸戲人共戲,見已作是念:「世間聰明者此是最勝,我寧可所可共沙門瞿曇論者,盡當向彼戲人說之。」於是彼婆羅門便至彼諸戲人所,到已所可共世尊論者,盡向彼戲人說之。如是說已,彼諸戲人報彼婆羅門曰:「此婆羅門!豈當爾?愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂耶?此婆羅門!愛生已,當有歡喜愛念。」於是彼婆羅門作是念:「此諸戲人語與我等。」回頭已即便去。

彼所論則廣聞,次第徹王宮。王波斯匿聞之,沙門瞿曇作是言:「愛生已則有憂戚苦不樂。」王波斯匿聞已,告末利夫人曰:「此末利!我聞沙門瞿曇作是言:『愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂。』」

「如是如是。大王!愛生已,則有苦憂戚不樂。」

「此末利!我聞汝師言,弟子亦爾。汝末利!彼沙門瞿曇是汝師,而今汝作是言:『愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂。』」

「此大王!聞我所說不信者,便可自往、若遣使。」

於是王波斯匿告那梨鴦伽婆羅門曰:「汝那梨鴦伽!往彼沙門瞿曇所

現代漢語譯本:於是那位婆羅門聽了世尊所說,既不高興,也不說不對。不高興,也不認可,就從座位上起身離開了。當時,祇園精舍門外有一些戲子在玩耍,那位婆羅門遠遠地看見祇園精舍門外有戲子在玩耍,看到後心想:『世間聰明人中,這個人是最厲害的,我寧可把我跟沙門瞿曇辯論的內容,都告訴那些戲子。』於是那位婆羅門就走到那些戲子那裡,到了之後,就把他跟世尊辯論的內容,都告訴了那些戲子。說完之後,那些戲子對那位婆羅門說:『這位婆羅門!怎麼會這樣呢?愛產生后,就會有憂愁、悲傷、不快樂嗎?這位婆羅門!愛產生后,應該會有歡喜、愛戀才對。』於是那位婆羅門心想:『這些戲子說的話跟我一樣。』就回頭離開了。 他所辯論的內容傳得很廣,逐漸傳到了王宮。波斯匿王聽說了,沙門瞿曇說:『愛產生后,就會有憂愁、悲傷、不快樂。』波斯匿王聽了之後,告訴末利夫人說:『末利啊!我聽說沙門瞿曇說:『愛產生后,就會有憂愁、悲傷、不快樂。』 『是這樣的,大王!愛產生后,就會有憂愁、悲傷、不快樂。』 『末利啊!我聽說你的老師這樣說,弟子也這樣說。末利啊!那個沙門瞿曇是你的老師,而現在你說:『愛產生后,就會有憂愁、悲傷、不快樂。』 『大王!如果聽我說不相信,可以自己去問,或者派使者去問。』 於是波斯匿王告訴那梨鴦伽婆羅門說:『你,那梨鴦伽!去沙門瞿曇那裡』

English version: Then that Brahmin, having heard what the Blessed One said, was neither pleased nor did he say it was wrong. Being neither pleased nor accepting it, he rose from his seat and departed. At that time, there were some actors playing outside the gate of Jeta Grove. The Brahmin saw them from afar and thought, 'Among the wise in the world, this one is the most excellent. I would rather tell those actors everything I discussed with the ascetic Gotama.' So the Brahmin went to those actors, and having arrived, he told them everything he had discussed with the Blessed One. After he had spoken, those actors said to the Brahmin, 'O Brahmin! How can that be? When love arises, is there sorrow, grief, and displeasure? O Brahmin! When love arises, there should be joy and affection.' Then the Brahmin thought, 'These actors speak like me.' He turned around and left. What he had discussed became widely known, and gradually reached the royal palace. King Pasenadi heard that the ascetic Gotama had said, 'When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and displeasure.' Having heard this, King Pasenadi said to Queen Mallika, 'Mallika! I have heard that the ascetic Gotama said, 'When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and displeasure.' 'Yes, that is so, O King! When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and displeasure.' 'Mallika! I have heard that your teacher says this, and so do his disciples. Mallika! That ascetic Gotama is your teacher, and now you say, 'When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and displeasure.' 'O King! If you do not believe what I say, you can go yourself or send a messenger.' Then King Pasenadi said to the Brahmin Narayanga, 'You, Narayanga! Go to the ascetic Gotama.'

。到已以我言問訊沙門瞿曇,無量問訊,安隱輕舉有力不?作如是言:『此瞿曇!王波斯匿無量問訊,安隱輕舉有力不?實沙門瞿曇!作是言:「愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂耶?」』此那梨鴦伽!若彼沙門瞿曇作是說,汝當善受持誦習之。何以故?彼不虛說。」

彼那梨鴦伽婆羅門速受王波斯匿教已,至世尊所,到已共世尊面相慰勞,面相慰勞已,卻坐一面。彼那梨鴦伽婆羅門卻坐一面已,白世尊曰:「此瞿曇!波斯匿王無量問訊,安隱輕舉有力不?實沙門瞿曇作是言:『愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂耶?』」

「此那梨鴦伽!我還問汝,隨所有力當還報之。于那梨鴦伽意云何?或有人母命終,彼母命終意狂亂,裸形不著衣隨彼遊行,作如是言:『我不見母、我不見母。』此婆羅門當知之,愛生已則有憂戚苦不樂。如是父兄姊妹若婦命終,彼婦命終已則意狂亂,裸形不著衣隨彼遊行,作是言:『我不見父及婦。』此婆羅門!當知此愛生已則有憂戚苦不樂。此婆羅門!昔有一人婦還歸家,彼親屬欲奪與他人,彼婦人聞之,親屬欲持我與他人。彼婦人聞已速便走還。還至己夫所,到已語彼夫曰:『君當知,我親屬欲持我與他人。君所應為者今當爲之

English version: I will go with my words to inquire of the ascetic Gautama, with countless inquiries, asking if he is well, light, and strong? Saying thus: 『This Gautama! King Pasenadi inquires countless times, asking if he is well, light, and strong?』 Indeed, ascetic Gautama! Saying thus: 『When love arises, will there be sorrow, grief, pain, and displeasure?』 This Narayanga! If that ascetic Gautama says so, you should well receive, recite, and learn it. Why? Because he does not speak falsely.」 That Narayanga Brahmin quickly accepted King Pasenadi's instruction and went to the World Honored One. Having arrived, he exchanged greetings with the World Honored One. After the greetings, he sat down to one side. After sitting down to one side, that Narayanga Brahmin said to the World Honored One: 『This Gautama! King Pasenadi inquires countless times, asking if he is well, light, and strong?』 Indeed, ascetic Gautama says thus: 『When love arises, will there be sorrow, grief, pain, and displeasure?』 『This Narayanga! I will ask you in return, and you should answer me to the best of your ability. What do you think, Narayanga? If someone's mother dies, and he becomes deranged because of his mother's death, running around naked and unclothed, saying: 『I do not see my mother, I do not see my mother.』 This Brahmin should know that when love arises, there will be sorrow, grief, pain, and displeasure. Similarly, if a father, brother, sister, or wife dies, and he becomes deranged because of his wife's death, running around naked and unclothed, saying: 『I do not see my father and wife.』 This Brahmin! Should know that when love arises, there will be sorrow, grief, pain, and displeasure. This Brahmin! Once there was a person whose wife returned to her parents' home, and her relatives wanted to marry her to another man. When the wife heard this, she knew that her relatives wanted to marry her to another man. Upon hearing this, the wife quickly ran back home. Returning to her husband, she said to him: 『You should know that my relatives want to marry me to another man. What you should do, do it now.』

。』於是彼人作極利刀,持彼婦人手還入屋中,作如是言:『當共同去,當共同去。』斷彼女人命亦自斷命。此婆羅門!當知此愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂。」

於是那梨鴦伽婆羅門聞世尊所說,善受持誦習已,從坐起,繞世尊已離世尊,還至王波斯匿所。到已白王波斯匿曰:「實爾,大王!彼沙門瞿曇作是說:『愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂。』」於是王波斯匿告末利夫人曰:「實爾,末利!彼沙門瞿曇作是說:『愛生已,則有憂戚苦不樂。』」「是故,大王!我還問王,隨所有力當報之。于大王意云何?愛鞞留羅大將不?」

「此末利!我愛彼鞞留羅大將。」

「此大王!彼鞞留羅大將,是敗壞、是變異,生苦憂戚不樂不?」

「此末利!鞞留羅大將,有敗壞變異,則有憂戚苦不樂。」

「此大王!當以此知之,愛生已則有憂戚苦不樂。于大王意云何?愛賢首大將,愛一奔陀利大象,愛婆夷提女,愛婆沙剎諦隸(夫人),愛迦尸人民不?」

「此末利!愛迦尸拘薩羅人民。」

「此大王!迦尸拘薩羅人民,亦是敗壞有變異,生苦憂戚不樂不?」「此末利!諸五淫慾自娛樂者,皆因迦尸拘薩羅人民

English version: 'Then that man took a very sharp knife, held the woman's hand, and went back into the house, saying, 『Let's go together, let's go together.』 Then he killed the woman and also killed himself. O Brahmin! You should know that when love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and unhappiness.' Then the Brahmin Naliyangga, having heard what the Blessed One had said, well received, recited, and learned it, rose from his seat, circumambulated the Blessed One, and departed from the Blessed One, returning to King Pasenadi. Having arrived, he said to King Pasenadi, 『Indeed, O King! That ascetic Gotama says this: 『When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and unhappiness.』』 Then King Pasenadi said to Queen Mallika, 『Indeed, Mallika! That ascetic Gotama says this: 『When love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and unhappiness.』』 『Therefore, O King! I will ask you again, and I will answer you to the best of my ability. What do you think? Do you love General Virulha?』 『Yes, Mallika! I love that General Virulha.』 『O King! That General Virulha, is he subject to decay and change, and does he cause pain, sorrow, and unhappiness?』 『Yes, Mallika! If General Virulha decays and changes, there will be sorrow, grief, and unhappiness.』 『O King! You should know from this that when love arises, there is sorrow, grief, and unhappiness. What do you think? Do you love General Siresha, do you love the elephant Pundarika, do you love the woman of Vedehi, do you love the lady of Vasakshatriya, do you love the people of Kasi?』 『Yes, Mallika! I love the people of Kasi and Kosala.』 『O King! The people of Kasi and Kosala, are they also subject to decay and change, and do they cause pain, sorrow, and unhappiness?』 『Yes, Mallika! Those who indulge in the five sensual pleasures, it is all because of the people of Kasi and Kosala.』

。此末利!迦尸人民敗壞變異者,我命不全,況當不生苦憂戚不樂?」

「此大王!當知此愛生已,則有苦憂戚不樂。于大王意云何?今寧愍妾不?」

「此末利!我亦愍汝。」

「此大王!妾亦有敗壞、有變異,寧可不生苦憂戚不樂耶?」

「汝末利!敗壞有變異,我亦當生憂戚苦不樂。」

「此大王!以此當知之,愛生已則有憂戚苦不樂。」

「此末利!從今日始,彼沙門瞿曇!因此事當爲我師,我為弟子。此末利!我今歸彼世尊、法及比丘僧,我于彼世尊持優婆塞,從今日始離於殺,今自歸佛。」如是說,王波斯匿遙聞世尊所說,歡喜而樂

『末利啊!迦尸人民會敗壞變異,我的生命也不完整,何況能不產生苦惱憂愁不快樂呢?』 『大王啊!應當知道,有了愛就會有苦惱憂愁不快樂。大王您覺得呢?現在您會憐憫我嗎?』 『末利啊!我也憐憫你。』 『大王啊!我也有敗壞和變異,難道可以不產生苦惱憂愁不快樂嗎?』 『末利啊!你會有敗壞和變異,我也會因此產生憂愁苦惱不快樂。』 『大王啊!由此應當知道,有了愛就會有憂愁苦惱不快樂。』 『末利啊!從今天開始,那位沙門瞿曇,因為這件事將成為我的老師,我成為他的弟子。末利啊!我現在皈依世尊、佛法和比丘僧,我將在世尊那裡成為優婆塞,從今天開始不再殺生,現在皈依佛。』這樣說完,波斯匿王遠遠聽到世尊所說,歡喜快樂。

'Malika! The people of Kasi are subject to decay and change, and my own life is not complete, how could I not experience suffering, sorrow, and displeasure?' 'Great King! You should know that when love arises, there is suffering, sorrow, and displeasure. What do you think, Great King? Do you pity me now?' 'Malika! I do pity you.' 'Great King! I am also subject to decay and change, how could I not experience suffering, sorrow, and displeasure?' 'Malika! You are subject to decay and change, and I will also experience sorrow, suffering, and displeasure because of it.' 'Great King! From this, you should know that when love arises, there is sorrow, suffering, and displeasure.' 'Malika! From this day forward, that Shramana Gautama, because of this matter, shall be my teacher, and I shall be his disciple. Malika! I now take refuge in the Blessed One, the Dharma, and the Sangha of monks. I will be a lay follower at the Blessed One's place, and from this day forward, I will abstain from killing, and now I take refuge in the Buddha.' Having said this, King Pasenadi, hearing from afar what the Blessed One had said, was joyful and happy.

現代漢語譯本:佛說,婆羅門之子命終時,仍然愛戀不捨經文。
