English version: The Sutra of King Prasenajit's Ten Dreams This is the 0148th scripture in the 2nd volume of the Taisho Tripitaka. Translated by the Western Region Śramaṇa Zhu Tanwulan of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. At that time, King Prasenajit, while sleeping at night, dreamt of ten things. What were these ten things? First, he dreamt of three jars placed side by side, the two side jars were full, and the air flowed back and forth between them, but did not enter the empty jar in the middle. Second, he dreamt of a horse eating with its mouth and also with its rear. Third, he dreamt of a small tree blossoming. Fourth, he dreamt of a small tree bearing fruit. Fifth, he dreamt of a person holding a rope, with a sheep behind him, and the sheep's owner eating the rope. Sixth, he dreamt of a fox sitting on a golden bed, eating from golden utensils. Seventh, he dreamt of a large cow drinking milk from a calf. Eighth, he dreamt of four cows coming from four directions, bellowing and wanting to fight, about to meet but not knowing where the cows were. Ninth, he dreamt of a large pond, the middle was turbid, and the four sides were clear. Tenth, he dreamt of a large stream flowing with bright red water. After the king dreamt these things, he awoke, greatly frightened, worried about losing his kingdom, himself, and his wife and children. The next day, the king summoned his ministers and officials, as well as the Taoists who understood dreams, and asked: 'Last night, while sleeping, I dreamt of these ten things, and after waking up, my heart is filled with fear and unease. Who can interpret this dream?' Among the Taoists, there was a Brahmin who said: 'I can interpret the dream for the king, but I fear that the king will be worried and unhappy upon hearing it.' The king said: 'Tell me the truth as you see it, do not conceal anything.' The Brahmin said: 'The king's dreams are all bad omens, not auspicious. You should kill your most beloved wife, the crown prince, and the close attendants and servants around you to sacrifice to the heavens, so that the king can be safe; the bedding and the precious and fine things you wear should all be burned to sacrifice to the heavens, so that the king can be safe.' Upon hearing the Brahmin's interpretation of the dream, the king became very worried and unhappy, and retreated to his meditation room to contemplate this matter. The king had a queen named Mani, who came to the king and asked: 'Why have you entered the meditation room with worry and unhappiness? Have I done something wrong to offend you?' The king said: 'You have not offended me, it is I who am worried.' The queen asked again: 'What is causing the king to worry?' The king said: 'Do not ask me, hearing it will make you unhappy.'
English version: The queen then said, 'I am half of your body. If there are good or bad things, you should tell me. Why don't you tell me?' The king then said to the queen, 'Last night I had ten dreams. After waking up, I was very worried and scared, fearing that I would lose my country, myself, and my wife and children. I summoned the ministers, dukes, and Taoists, and told them about the ten dreams I had. A Brahmin interpreted my dream, saying, 'You should kill your most beloved queen, the crown prince, as well as the close attendants, servants, white elephants, and famous horses to sacrifice to the heavens. You should also burn the bed you sleep on and the treasures you wear to sacrifice to the heavens. Only then can you be safe.' That's why I am so worried and unhappy.' The queen said, 'Your Majesty, do not worry! Just like buying gold and using a whetstone to grind it, the good, bad, and evil colors will naturally appear on the whetstone. Now the Buddha is in the monastery not far from our country. Why not go and ask the Buddha about the meaning of the dream? If the Buddha can interpret the dream, we will follow what the Buddha says.' The king immediately ordered his ministers to prepare the carriage and go to where the Buddha was. After getting out of the carriage, the king walked to the Buddha, bowed to the Buddha with his head touching the ground, and then sat aside and said to the Buddha, 'Last night I had ten dreams: First, I dreamed of three bottles side by side, the bottles on both sides were full of air, flowing to each other, but not entering the empty bottle in the middle. Second, I dreamed of a horse eating with its mouth and also eating with its buttocks. Third, I dreamed of a small tree blooming. Fourth, I dreamed of a small tree bearing fruit. Fifth, I dreamed of a person holding a rope, followed by a sheep, and the owner of the sheep eating the rope. Sixth, I dreamed of a fox sitting on a golden bed, eating with golden utensils. Seventh, I dreamed of a big cow drinking milk from a calf. Eighth, I dreamed of four cows coming from four directions, wanting to fight each other, but they didn't fight, and I didn't know where the cows were. Ninth, I dreamed of a large pond, turbid in the middle and clear on all sides. Tenth, I dreamed of a stream flowing red. These are the dreams I had. After waking up, I was very scared, fearing that I would lose my country, myself, and my wife and children. Only the Buddha can interpret these ten dreams I had. I hope to hear your teachings.' The Buddha said, 'Your Majesty, do not worry! There is nothing bad about your dreams. Your dreams are a prediction of what will happen in the future, not in the present.' The Buddha said, 'People in the future will not fear the constraints of the law, they will be promiscuous, greedy, jealous, and insatiable. They will lack morality, have no compassion, be moody, and have no sense of shame.' The Buddha said, 'First, dreaming of three bottles side by side, the bottles on both sides full of air, flowing to each other, but not entering the empty bottle in the middle, this is a prediction that in the future, those wealthy and powerful people will only follow each other and ignore the poor. Your Majesty's dream of three bottles side by side is exactly this meaning. Your Majesty, do not be afraid! There is nothing bad for your country, the crown prince, and the queen.'
。」
English version The Buddha said, 'Secondly, the king dreamed of a horse eating with its mouth and also with its rear. This means that in later generations, people will become emperors or ministers, enjoying the state's俸祿 (salary) and also exploiting the wealth of the people, never being satisfied. The king's dream of a horse eating with its mouth and also with its rear refers to this situation. King, do not be afraid! It will have no ill effects on the kingdom, the crown prince, or the queen.' The Buddha said, 'Thirdly, dreaming of a small tree blossoming means that in later generations, people will have white hair before the age of thirty, indulging in lust and appearing old at a young age. The king's dream of a small tree blossoming refers to this situation. King, do not be afraid! It will have no ill effects on the kingdom, the crown prince, or the queen.' The Buddha said, 'Fourthly, dreaming of a small tree bearing fruit means that in later generations, women will marry and have children before the age of fifteen, without any sense of shame. The king's dream of a small tree bearing fruit refers to this situation. King, do not be afraid! It will have no ill effects on the kingdom, the crown prince, or the queen.' The Buddha said, 'Fifthly, dreaming of a person holding a rope, followed by a sheep, and the sheep's owner eating the rope, means that in later generations, husbands will go out to do business, leaving their wives at home, and the wives will have affairs with other men, consuming their wealth. The king's dream of a person holding a rope refers to this situation. King, do not be afraid! It will have no ill effects on the kingdom, the crown prince, or the queen.' The Buddha said, 'Sixthly, the king dreamed of a fox sitting on a golden bed, eating from golden utensils. This means that in later generations, lowly people will become noble and wealthy, and everyone will respect them, while the descendants of dukes and marquises will become even poorer, sitting in lower seats and eating leftovers. The king's dream of a fox sitting on a golden bed and eating from golden utensils refers to this situation. King, do not be afraid! It will have no ill effects on the kingdom, the crown prince, or the queen.' The Buddha said, 'Seventhly, the king dreamed of a large cow suckling from its calf. This means that in later generations, people will have no sense of propriety, and mothers will act as matchmakers for their daughters, enticing men from other families to have affairs with their daughters, selling their daughters for money to support themselves, without any sense of shame. The king's dream of a large cow suckling from its calf refers to this situation. King, do not be afraid! It will have no ill effects on the kingdom, the crown prince, or the queen.'
The Buddha said, 'Eighth, dreaming of four oxen bellowing and rushing from four directions, wanting to fight each other, about to clash but not clashing, and not knowing where the oxen are, this foretells that future emperors, officials, and people will lack sincerity, deceive each other, be ignorant, angry, and disrespectful to heaven and earth. Therefore, rain will not come on time. When officials and people pray for rain, the sky will show clouds, thunder, and lightning from all directions, and officials and people will say it is going to rain, but after a while, the clouds will scatter and the rain will not fall. Why is this? Because emperors, officials, and people lack loyalty, righteousness, compassion, and benevolence. The king's dream of four oxen bellowing and rushing to fight, about to clash but not clashing, and not knowing where the oxen are, refers precisely to this. King, do not be afraid! There will be no other misfortune for your kingdom, your prince, or your queen.' The Buddha said, 'Ninth, the king's dream of a large pond with murky water in the center and clear water around the edges foretells that in the future, China will be in turmoil, governance will be unfair, people will be unfilial to their parents and disrespectful to elders, while the border countries will be peaceful and clear, and the people will be harmonious and filial to their parents. The king's dream of a large pond with murky water in the center and clear water around the edges refers precisely to this. King, do not be afraid! There will be no other misfortune for your kingdom, your prince, or your queen.' The Buddha said, 'Tenth, the king's dream of a large stream flowing with bright red water foretells that in the future, various countries will engage in disputes, raise armies, and attack each other. There will be chariots, infantry, and cavalry fighting together, killing and wounding each other in countless numbers, with the dead lying on the roads and blood flowing red. The king's dream of a large stream flowing with bright red water refers precisely to this. King, do not be afraid! There will be no other misfortune for your kingdom, your prince, or your queen.' The Buddha said, 'What the king has dreamed are all things that will happen in the future, not things of the present. King, do not be afraid or worried.' The king immediately knelt down and said, 'Having heard the Buddha's teachings, my heart is very joyful, like a person using a small container to hold oil, but the oil is too much and the container is too small, so they find a larger container to hold it, and then they are secure and no longer afraid. Now I have received the Buddha's grace and have gained peace.' The king immediately bowed to the Buddha, returned to the palace, richly rewarded the queen, and confiscated the salaries of all the ministers. The king said, 'From now on, I will no longer believe the words of those heretics and Brahmins.'
The King's Dream of Not Being Separated
