English version The Sutra of King Long-Life Sengyou's record states that the sutra translated by An Gong lost the name of the translator, and it is now attached to the record of the Western Jin Dynasty. Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika in Shravasti. At that time, the Buddha told the monks: 'In the past, there was a Bodhisattva who was a great king named Long-Life; the king had a crown prince named Long-Birth. The king governed the country with benevolent policies, not harming officials and people with weapons, the weather was favorable, and the five grains were abundant. There was a neighboring king who governed the country tyrannically, not practicing the right path, causing the people to be impoverished. He said to his ministers: 'I heard that the kingdom of Long-Life is not far from here, very rich, and has no military preparations. I want to attack and seize their country, is it possible?' The ministers replied: 'Excellent!' So he raised troops and went to the border of the kingdom of Long-Life. The officials and people on the border ran to report to the king, saying: 'That greedy king has raised troops and come, wanting to attack the country of our wise king, we hope you will prepare early.' King Long-Life summoned his ministers and told them: 'The reason they come is just to covet our people, granaries, and treasures. If we fight with them, it will surely harm my people. I will not do such a thing as fighting for the country and killing the people.' The ministers said: 'We are all proficient in warfare, and we will surely defeat them, and will not let the wise king's army be invaded by them.' The king said: 'If I defeat them, there will be casualties. Their soldiers and my people all cherish life, loving themselves and harming others, a wise person would not do this.' The ministers did not listen, left the king in the palace, and went out to send troops to the border to resist the enemy. King Long-Life then said to his crown prince: 'They covet our country, so they come to attack us. Now the ministers, for my sake, want to resist them. When two armies face each other, there will surely be damage, now I want to abandon the country and flee with you.'

'The crown prince said, 『Yes.』 Then the father and son together climbed over the city wall and went into hiding in the deep mountains. 'At this time, the greedy king entered their country and offered a reward of a thousand gold pieces and ten million coins to find King Longevity. Later, King Longevity would sit under a tree by the roadside every day. A Brahmin from a distant land also came and rested under the tree. He asked King Longevity, 『Where are you from? Why are you here?』 King Longevity said, 『I am from this country, just here for a casual stroll.』 King Longevity asked the Brahmin, 『Where do you come from, wise one? Where are you going?』 The Brahmin said, 『I am a poor Taoist from a distant land. I heard that King Longevity of this country likes to give alms and help the poor and weak, so I came from afar, hoping to beg for something to live on. I don't know what the king thinks now? You are from this country, you have heard of his thoughts, what is the situation now? Will he still give alms?』 King Longevity thought silently, 『This person came from afar because of me, but he has encountered me losing my country and will return empty-handed, it is truly pitiful.』 'Then, King Longevity, with tears in his eyes, said to the Brahmin, 『I am King Longevity. Another king came to attack me, and I abandoned my country and hid here. Now I hear that you, wise one, have come to rely on me, but you have encountered me being destitute and unable to repay you, what should I do?』 The two faced each other, choking with sobs. King Longevity said, 『I heard that the new king values me very much, if you take my head, you can get a great reward.』 The Brahmin said, 『I heard that Your Majesty helps everyone, so I came to beg, hoping to get a little something to sustain my life. But I have encountered Your Majesty losing your country, this is my bad luck. Now you ask me to cut off your head, I dare not accept this order.』 King Longevity said, 『You came from afar wanting to gain something, but you have encountered me in distress and poverty, unable to repay you. Moreover, people in this world must eventually die, we will all die, I am willing to use my body to help you, why refuse? If you don't take it now, if someone else comes later, I will still give it to them, so it is better to take it sooner.』 The Brahmin said, 『I cannot bear to kill Your Majesty.』

'If Your Majesty truly has a benevolent heart and wishes to sacrifice your life to bestow kindness, you need only release your hands and follow us.' The king then followed them, and upon reaching the city gate, they ordered him to be bound and handed over to the greedy king. The king then rewarded the Brahmins with gold and sent them away. 'Thereupon, the greedy king sent men to burn King Long-Life to death at the crossroads. After King Long-Life died, the ministers told the greedy king: 'This was our former ruler, and now he is to be executed. We wish to prepare some simple offerings to send him off.' The greedy king agreed. The ministers prepared the offerings, choked with sobs as they approached him, and the people who saw it all said: 'The king has died unjustly.' The entire city and countryside cried out to the heavens. 'At that time, Prince Long-Life was by the roadside, and upon hearing the people's talk, he knew that his father had been captured by the greedy king. He then pretended to carry firewood to the market to sell, mingling among the crowd. He stood before his father, and seeing that his father was about to be executed, his heart was filled with sorrow. His father, seeing Long-Life, feared that he would be enraged and seek revenge for him, so he looked up to the sky and sighed, saying: 'If a son wishes to be truly filial, he must ensure that his father dies without regret. Do not seek revenge for your father, so that your father can die in peace; if you disobey your father's words and kill others, then your father will die with lingering resentment.' Long-Life could not bear to see his father die, so he returned to the mountains, and King Long-Life was ultimately burned to death. 'After a long time, Long-Life thought to himself: 'My father was deeply benevolent and righteous, and he did not change even in death; but this greedy king is wicked, unable to distinguish good from evil, and unjustly killed my father. Although my father had a compassionate and kind heart, and died without anger, I cannot bear it. If I do not go and kill this greedy king, I will not live a meaningless life in this world.' So he went out to work as a laborer. A minister in the kingdom was looking for laborers in the market to manage his garden, and he found Long-Life. He had him plant vegetables, and the vegetables grew very well. Later, the minister inspected the garden and, seeing that the vegetables were growing so well, he called the garden supervisor to ask about it. The supervisor replied: 'We hired a man to do it before, and that is why they are so good.'

English version: The minister, having heard of Changsheng's talent, summoned him and asked, 'Are you skilled in cooking?' Changsheng replied, 'I am.' The minister had him cook, and the food was very delicious, so he presented it to the king. The king tasted it and found it delicious, so he asked, 'Who made this food?' The minister replied, 'I previously hired a person who can make this kind of food.' The king then summoned Changsheng and brought him to the palace to have him cook. Later, one day, the king asked Changsheng, 'Are you familiar with military strategy?' Changsheng replied, 'Indeed, I am.' The king then placed him at the border and told him, 'I have an enemy, Prince Changshou. I am always worried that he will suddenly come to seek revenge. Now I rely on you, and I hope you can help me defend against him.' Changsheng replied, 'Yes, I will do my best for Your Majesty.' Another day passed, and the king asked Changsheng, 'Do you like hunting?' Changsheng replied, 'I have liked hunting since I was young.' The king then ordered his men to prepare the carriages and horses, and went hunting with Changsheng. As soon as they entered the forest, they saw wild animals. The king and Changsheng chased after the animals, but they entered deep into the mountains and lost their way, unable to get out. After being lost for three days, they were hungry and tired. The king then dismounted, took off his sword, and handed it to Changsheng, saying, 'I am very exhausted. You sit down, and I want to rest my head on your lap.' Changsheng said, 'Okay.' The king then lay down to sleep. Changsheng thought to himself, 'I have been looking for an opportunity for revenge, and today I have finally got my wish.' He then drew his sword, intending to kill the greedy king. But then he thought, 'My father told me before he died, how can I satisfy my own desire and disobey my kind father's dying words?' So he put the sword back. The king then woke up in shock and asked Changsheng, 'I dreamed that Prince Changshou was coming to kill me, and I was very scared. What is going on?' Changsheng said, 'There are powerful ghosts and spirits in the mountains. They saw Your Majesty here, so they came to frighten you. I am here to protect you, so Your Majesty can sleep peacefully and have no fear.' The king then went back to sleep, and Changsheng again drew his sword to kill him, but remembering his father's words, he stopped again.

King Fu woke up in shock and told Changsheng, 『I dreamt again that Prince Changshou wanted to kill me, and I am very afraid. What is going on?』 Changsheng said, 『It must be the mountain god playing tricks. Your Majesty, there is nothing to fear.』 The king went back to sleep, and Changsheng again drew his sword to kill him, but thinking of his father's words, he stopped. So he threw the sword on the ground, no longer intending to kill the king. The king woke up in shock again and told Changsheng, 『I dreamt again of Prince Changshou, and he said, 「I beg for forgiveness.」 He no longer wants to kill me.』 Then Changsheng said, 『I am Changsheng, the crown prince of King Changshou. I did come here to kill Your Majesty to avenge my father. But I remembered my father』s earnest instructions before his death, that he did not want me to seek revenge. I was foolish and wanted to disobey my father』s words. But after carefully considering my father』s sincere and earnest teachings, I dare not disobey them. Therefore, I now throw my sword on the ground to obey my father』s words. Even so, I am still afraid that I might be confused and make a mistake in the future, and disobey my deceased father』s teachings. So I am telling you now, I hope Your Majesty will execute me immediately, to extinguish my evil intentions early, so that I can completely abandon the thought of revenge.』 The king then repented and said, 『I was truly cruel and tyrannical, unable to distinguish good from evil. The virtuous father and son practiced benevolence, pure and steadfast until death, while I was greedy and cruel, and did not realize it at all. Today, it has come to this, my life is in your hands. You, however, are benevolent, remembering only your father』s words and not harming me, truly a great kindness. Now that I want to return to my kingdom, which way should I go?』 Changsheng said, 『I know that the one who confused Your Majesty before, wanting to avenge my father, was me.』 Then Changsheng and the king went out of the forest together, and they saw the ministers scattered around the edge of the forest. The king stopped and sat down, and arranged for food and drink. The king asked the ministers, 『Do any of you know Prince Changshou, Changsheng?』 Among those who did not know him, they replied, 『We do not know him.』 Among those who knew him, having received kindness from Changsheng before, and fearing that the king would kill him, they also said, 『We do not know him.』 The king then pointed and said, 『This is Changsheng.』

The king said, 'From today onwards, I shall return to my own kingdom, and I wish to return this country to the crown prince; from today onwards, you are my brother, and if any other country comes to invade and plunder, we should help each other.' The king then led his ministers and soldiers back to his own country, and the two countries exchanged rare and precious gifts. The Buddha told the monks, 'The King of Long Life at that time is now me; the Crown Prince Long Life is Ananda; the greedy king is Devadatta. Devadatta has held a grudge against me for many lifetimes, and even though I have good intentions towards him, he still wants to harm me. Ananda, on the other hand, had no ill intentions towards him, so when they met, they had a desire to reconcile. This is how diligently and arduously a Bodhisattva seeks the Way, even when faced with harm from thieves, they have no resentment in their hearts, and thus they ultimately attain Buddhahood and become the most honored one in the three realms.' The monks were very happy to hear this and bowed to the Buddha. The Buddha is like a shipmaster on the sea, using the bridge of Dharma to cross the river of life and death, He is the vehicle of the Great Vehicle path, delivering all heavenly beings and people, He can also liberate himself from afflictions, reach the other shore, and ascend to immortality. He can enable all disciples to break free from bondage and reach Nirvana, Respectfully visiting the Dharma King, with a righteous heart and stable power of the Way. The most supreme one is called Buddha, his fame is as prominent as a snow mountain, Like a pure flower without doubt, receiving joy as if near fragrance. Looking at his myriad forms, one will never tire, his light is as bright as a spiritual star, Through the Eightfold Path, one achieves enlightenment, without attachment or defilement. Love and desire are exhausted, the net of desire is broken, naturally without a teacher's guidance, My practice has no teacher's protection, my will is firm, and I have no equal companion. Accumulating merits, one ultimately becomes a Buddha, from there one understands the holy path, Reaching the truth, there is no going back and forth, it is profound, subtle, pure, and real. Neither dying nor being reborn, this state is Nirvana, This is the most important and tranquil supreme state, ultimately not enduring suffering; Even if there are good places in the heavens, they are not as good as Nirvana, My teacher is the heaven of heavens, the supreme one in the three realms.

The Buddha's majestic form is sixteen feet tall, with supernatural powers to roam freely in the void. His teachings are like fragrant flowers, removing the five aggregates of suffering, and completely severing the bonds of the twelve links of dependent origination. He does not covet heavenly positions or worldly power, his heart is pure, and he opens the gate to truth. The Buddha's Dharma is supreme, and the Buddha guides beings with pure practice. The Three Jewels of Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha will be passed down to future generations, enabling beings to break free from the shackles of desire and emotion. Escaping suffering, transcending the realm of conditioned existence, and attaining eternal joy and peace. I wish to always be in the presence of the Buddha, and together with him, liberate all beings. The original vows of the Buddha were achieved through diligent practice over hundreds of kalpas. He practices the four immeasurables of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity, bestowing blessings upon all beings in the ten directions. He upholds the precepts, pure and undefiled, protecting all beings with a compassionate and gentle heart. He uses wisdom to enter into meditative concentration, and with great compassion, universally recites the scriptures. His wisdom is always revered by people, and he is the master that all sages commonly respect. Even Indra and Brahma take him as their teacher, thus it is known that the Buddha is the supreme one. The appearance of the Buddha is extremely rare, nothing can compare to him, he is the greatest and most outstanding. His merits and virtues are widely spread, we should bow down and pay homage to him. Listen to me sing the praises of the Buddhas of the ten directions, who have abandoned all veils and entered into the stillness of meditation. Their light illuminates the seven heavens, and their virtue is more fragrant than sandalwood. The heavenly deities are amazed and full of admiration, longing to see the Buddha's honorable face. Indra and Brahma respectfully bow down to the Buddha, wanting to ask him for guidance. The reason the Buddha liberates the world is to bestow blessings upon all beings. The teachings and precepts he proclaims are clear and distinct everywhere. The Dharma is thus spread, and the disciples are happy to accept and practice it. Causing gods, humans, ghosts, and dragons to respectfully bow down and pay homage to the Buddha.
