東魏天竺優婆塞瞿曇般若流支譯

如是我聞:

一時,婆伽婆住舍婆提城祇陀樹林給孤獨園,與大比丘眾千二百五十人俱。爾時,世尊有多比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷、諸王、王等群臣宰相、種種外道、沙門婆羅門、波離婆阇迦、天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽等,侍衛供養,恭敬尊重,奉給所須。世尊如是多得凈利,衣食、臥具、病患醫藥,一切天人受用之物。然佛世尊不染不著,猶如蓮華處水無異,勝善名稱普聞世間,一切讚歎。

爾時,世尊——如來應正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人、師、佛、世尊——于諸世間天、人、魔、梵、沙門、婆羅門,知時所宜,如應說法。彼所說法,初、中、后善,義善語善,純備清凈,鮮白梵行。

爾時,世尊告諸比丘言:「諸比丘!若有眾生能知佈施、施果分報,如我所知施果分報。于食食時,若初食摶、若后食摶,不以少分,先舍施已,則不自食,離嫉心垢,則能捨施。諸比丘!若有眾生不知佈施、施果分報,如我所知施果分報

English version The Golden King Sutra Translated by Upasaka Gautama Prajnaruchi of Tianzhu, Eastern Wei Dynasty Thus have I heard: At one time, the Bhagavan was dwelling in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Garden in the city of Shravasti, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred and fifty Bhikshus. At that time, the World Honored One had many Bhikshus, Bhikshunis, Upasakas, Upasikas, kings, ministers, various heretics, Shramanas, Brahmins, Parivrajakas, Devas, Nagas, Yakshas, Gandharvas, Asuras, Garudas, Kinnaras, Mahoragas, and others, attending, making offerings, respectfully honoring, and providing for their needs. The World Honored One thus received much pure benefit, including clothing, food, bedding, medicine for the sick, and all things used by Devas and humans. However, the Buddha, the World Honored One, was not defiled or attached to these things, just as a lotus flower remains unstained while in water. His excellent reputation was widely known throughout the world, and all praised him. At that time, the World Honored One—the Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, Vidyacharana-sampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Purushadamyasarathi, Shastha Deva-manushyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan—knowing the appropriate time for the world of Devas, humans, Mara, Brahma, Shramanas, and Brahmins, taught the Dharma accordingly. His teachings were good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with good meaning and good words, pure and complete, and a bright and pure Brahmacharya. At that time, the World Honored One said to the Bhikshus: 'Bhikshus! If sentient beings understand giving and the results of giving, as I understand the results of giving, then when eating, whether it is the first morsel or the last morsel, they should not eat it themselves first, but should first give a portion away, and then eat themselves. In this way, they can be free from the defilement of jealousy and be able to give. Bhikshus! If sentient beings do not understand giving and the results of giving, as I understand the results of giving...'

。如是眾生若初食摶、若后食摶,不以少分舍用施他,而便自食,有嫉心垢則不能施。何以故?諸比丘!過去有王,名曰金色;端正殊特,容相具足,成就最上勝妙色身。彼金色王,極大富樂、有大財寶,多有雜物多受用物,多有錢、谷珠及真珠、珂寶、珊瑚,多有金銀、饒生色金,多有象馬多有牛群,多草馬群充滿欄廄。

「金色王都,名饒金城,王處其中。城東西長量十二由旬,南北之量廣七由旬。人民充滿,間無空處,安隱豐樂;五十七億村邑、聚落,人民充滿,安隱豐樂。六萬山川皆有大城,城有主者,人民充滿安隱豐樂。彼金色王多有臣眾一萬八千,中宮婇女乃有二萬。彼金色王善知王法依法而行,于彼國法如法為王。彼金色王一切所有,皆能捨施無物不捨,乃至身肉;彼時人壽八萬四千。

「彼金色王,復于異時在空閑處,寂靜思惟生如是心:『一切商人我當不稅,一切人民我當不賦。』時金色王既思惟已,詔喚大臣、左右內外諸曹百官,如是敕言:『自今已后,一切人民,一切商人不賦、不稅,普閻浮提一切人民放其賦稅。』彼金色王以此方便,如法治國乃經多年。

「復于異時有惡星現,應十二年天不降雨

English version: If sentient beings, whether they eat a morsel for the first time or later, do not share a small portion with others but consume it themselves, harboring jealousy and defilement, they cannot give. Why is that? Monks! In the past, there was a king named Golden Color; he was upright in appearance, with an outstanding countenance, possessing the most superior and wondrous form. This King Golden Color was extremely wealthy and happy, possessing great treasures, numerous miscellaneous items and things for enjoyment, a great amount of coins, grains, pearls, as well as true pearls, precious stones, and coral, a great amount of gold and silver, pure gold, a great number of elephants and horses, herds of cattle, and stables filled with grass-fed horses. King Golden Color's capital was named Abundant Gold City, where the king resided. The city was twelve yojanas long from east to west and seven yojanas wide from north to south. The people were numerous, with no empty spaces, living in peace and prosperity; there were fifty-seven billion villages and settlements, filled with people, living in peace and prosperity. Sixty thousand mountains and rivers all had large cities, each with a lord, filled with people, living in peace and prosperity. This King Golden Color had many ministers, eighteen thousand in total, and twenty thousand concubines in his inner palace. This King Golden Color was well-versed in the ways of governance, acting according to the law, and ruling the country according to the law. This King Golden Color was able to give away everything he possessed, there was nothing he could not give away, even his own flesh; at that time, people's lifespans were eighty-four thousand years. This King Golden Color, at another time, in a secluded place, quietly contemplated and had this thought arise in his mind: 'I shall not tax any merchants, nor shall I levy taxes on any people.' At that time, King Golden Color, having finished his contemplation, summoned his ministers, officials from the left and right, and from all departments, and commanded them thus: 'From this day forward, all people, all merchants shall not be taxed, and all people throughout Jambudvipa shall be exempt from taxes.' King Golden Color, using this method, governed the country according to the law for many years. At another time, an ominous star appeared, indicating that there would be no rain for twelve years.

。有婆羅門善知相術,善知咒論,知太白等眾星行度,既見惡星,占相知已詣金色王,既到王所具為王說,作如是言:『天今當知,惡星已出,于天不祥,應十二年天不降雨。』

「時,金色王聞是語已,悲啼泣淚嗚呼嗟嘆,作如是言:『苦哉,我此閻浮提人!苦哉,我此閻浮提人!何期我此閻浮提處,安隱豐樂多饒人物;未久之間何期空曠,無有人民?』

「時,金色王于須臾間,悲啼止已,如是思惟:『富人饒財穀食豐長,於十二年能過不死。若貧窮者財物至少,穀食不足,云何存活?彼十二年云何能過?』彼金色王如是念已,復更思惟,起如是心:『我今當集閻浮提中一切穀食,聚著一處,一切外舍、一切村落、一切城邑、一切人處、國土王處,所有穀食皆悉將來,量知多少,一處作倉,閻浮提中一切人民,數知口數,計十二年均等與食。』

「時,金色王如是念已,即喚大臣、左右內外諸曹百官、一切關防諸禁伺處,所有主者皆悉來集,如是敕言:『卿等皆去閻浮提中所有穀食,一切收撿,量知多少。』閻浮提中一切外舍、一切村落、一切城邑、一切人處、國土王處,所有彼大臣等,聞金色王如是敕已,閻浮提中所有穀食,一切收撿量知多少

English version: There was a Brahmin who was skilled in physiognomy, proficient in incantations, and knowledgeable about the movements of stars like Venus. Having seen an ominous star and divined its meaning, he went to see King Golden Hue. Upon arriving at the king's palace, he reported to the king, saying, 'Your Majesty, you should know that an ominous star has appeared, which is inauspicious for you, indicating that there will be no rain for twelve years.' At that time, King Golden Hue, upon hearing these words, wept with sorrow, lamenting and sighing, saying, 'Alas, the people of my Jambudvipa! Alas, the people of my Jambudvipa! Who would have expected that this Jambudvipa, which was once peaceful, prosperous, abundant in resources, and populous, would soon become desolate and uninhabited?' After a moment of grief, King Golden Hue stopped weeping and began to ponder: 'The rich, with their abundant wealth and food, might be able to survive these twelve years. But the poor, with their meager possessions and insufficient food, how will they survive? How will they endure these twelve years?' Thinking this, King Golden Hue further contemplated and had an idea: 'I should gather all the food from all over Jambudvipa and store it in one place. Whether it's from outside houses, villages, towns, places where people live, or the king's territories, all the food should be collected, its quantity calculated, and stored in one warehouse. Then, I will count the population of Jambudvipa and calculate enough food to be distributed equally for twelve years.' Having thought this, King Golden Hue immediately summoned his ministers, attendants, officials from all departments, and all the heads of checkpoints and fortresses, ordering them to gather. He commanded, 'All of you go to all parts of Jambudvipa and collect all the food, and calculate its quantity.' The ministers, upon hearing King Golden Hue's command, began to collect food from all the houses, villages, towns, places where people lived, and the king's territories throughout Jambudvipa, and calculated its quantity.

。閻浮提中一切外舍、一切村落、一切城邑、一切人處、國土王處,所有穀食,皆悉將來一處作倉。然後往到金色王所,作如是言:『天今當知,閻浮提中一切外舍、一切村落、一切城邑、一切人處、國土王處所有穀食,皆已收聚量知多少。閻浮提中一切外舍、一切村落、一切城邑、一切人處、國土王處所有穀食,皆已將來一處作倉。天應知時,隨意所作。』時,金色王喚閻浮提善算數人、善知書人,如是敕言:『卿今速去閻浮提中一切人民,數知口數從我為首,閻浮提中一切人民,均等與食一切省與。』

「彼知算數、善知書人,聞金色王如是敕已,即爾速去。閻浮提中一切人民,皆悉遍數知口數已,善知書人具作文案謹送奉王。

「時,金色王自身為首,閻浮提中一切人民,均等與食一切省與,如是乃至到十一年存命不死。

「出十一年經一月日,處處多有男子、婦人,若男若女漸漸患饑,何以故?谷欲盡故。猶故復有十一月在,處處多有男子、婦人,若男若女飢渴欲死。

「當於爾時,閻浮提中一切穀食,皆悉已盡,倉皆空虛。爾時,唯有五升熟飯,可給一人一日之食,供金色王一食食在

They counted the population of all the people in Jambudvipa, and then compiled a detailed record, which they respectfully presented to the king. At that time, King Golden took the lead, starting with himself, and distributed the food equally among all the people of Jambudvipa, striving to be as frugal as possible. In this way, they survived for eleven years. After eleven years and one month, men, women, boys, and girls in various places began to feel hunger, and this was because the grain was running out. Although there were still eleven months left, many men, women, boys, and girls in various places were dying of hunger and thirst. By that time, all the grain in Jambudvipa had been exhausted, and the warehouses were empty. At that time, there were only five 'sheng' of cooked rice, enough for one person's food for one day, for King Golden to eat once a day.

「時,有一人過去已經四十劫來行菩薩行,乃至到此娑婆世界,于異林中見兩眾生母子,二人共行淫慾。時彼菩薩如是見已,心即嘆曰:『如是眾生,極惡煩惱住其脅中,飲其乳已,作如是事,何處更有如是惡法?我今不用如是眾生,不用如是非法眾生,非法欲染邪見惡貪之所覆人。不識父母,不知沙門及婆羅門,不護種姓、不敬尊長、不念親舊,我今不用利益如是極惡眾生,菩提之行我今寧當作自利益。』

「時,彼菩薩既起是心,即向余處異樹根下。既到彼已,依彼樹根,結加趺坐端身正念。時,彼菩薩於五取陰,若出若沒隨順觀察,此色集起、此色散滅,如是此受、此想、此行、此識集起,此識散滅,菩薩如是於五取陰隨順觀察,見此沒已,未久之間,所有集法一切散滅。既如是知,以是因緣即時獲得緣覺菩提,得菩提已,而說偈言:

「『因愛故生苦,  如是應舍愛, 當樂於獨處,  猶如犀一角。』

「時,辟支佛緣覺世尊,如是憶念:『我為眾生作利益故,多行苦行,無一眾生得我利益。我於今日憐愍眾生,為作利益,於何人所受其飲食?』

「時,辟支佛緣覺世尊,得天眼通清凈過人,普遍觀察閻浮提處

現代漢語譯本:當時,有一個人過去已經修行菩薩道四十劫,乃至來到這個娑婆世界,在另一片樹林中看見兩個眾生,是母子關係,他們正在一起行淫慾。當時那位菩薩看到這種情況后,心中感嘆道:『這樣的眾生,極惡的煩惱就住在他們的身體里,喝了母親的乳汁后,竟然做出這樣的事情,哪裡還有比這更惡劣的行爲了?我如今不用度化這樣的眾生,不用度化這些不守法的眾生,這些被非法慾望、邪見和貪婪所矇蔽的人。他們不認識父母,不知道沙門和婆羅門,不維護自己的種姓,不尊敬長輩,不念及親人舊友,我如今不用利益這些極惡的眾生,我寧願自己修行菩提道,求得自身的利益。』 當時,那位菩薩生起這樣的念頭后,就走到別處,在一棵不同的樹下。到了那裡后,他依靠著樹根,結跏趺坐,端正身體,集中意念。當時,那位菩薩對於五取蘊,觀察它們的生起和滅去,觀察色蘊的集起和散滅,同樣地觀察受蘊、想蘊、行蘊、識蘊的集起和散滅。菩薩這樣觀察五取蘊的生滅,看到它們滅去後,不久,所有集起的法都散滅了。他這樣明白后,因為這個因緣,立刻獲得了緣覺菩提。得到菩提后,他說了偈語: 『因為愛而產生痛苦,所以應該捨棄愛,應當樂於獨處,就像犀牛的角一樣。』 當時,辟支佛緣覺世尊這樣回憶:『我爲了利益眾生,做了很多苦行,卻沒有一個眾生得到我的利益。我今天憐憫眾生,爲了利益他們,應該從誰那裡接受飲食呢?』 當時,辟支佛緣覺世尊,得到了清凈過人的天眼通,普遍觀察閻浮提。

English version: At that time, there was a person who had practiced the Bodhisattva path for forty kalpas in the past, and had come to this Saha world. In a different forest, he saw two beings, a mother and son, engaging in sexual intercourse together. When that Bodhisattva saw this, he sighed in his heart, saying: 'Such beings, with extremely evil afflictions dwelling within them, having drunk their mother's milk, do such things. Where is there any more evil act than this? I will not now benefit such beings, I will not benefit these lawless beings, those who are covered by unlawful desires, wrong views, and evil greed. They do not recognize their parents, do not know the Shramanas and Brahmins, do not protect their lineage, do not respect their elders, and do not remember their relatives and old friends. I will not now benefit such extremely evil beings; I would rather practice the Bodhi path for my own benefit.' At that time, after the Bodhisattva had this thought, he went to another place, under the root of a different tree. Having arrived there, he leaned against the tree root, sat in the lotus position, straightened his body, and focused his mind. At that time, the Bodhisattva observed the five aggregates, their arising and ceasing, observing the arising and ceasing of the form aggregate, and similarly observing the arising and ceasing of the feeling, perception, mental formations, and consciousness aggregates. The Bodhisattva observed the arising and ceasing of the five aggregates in this way, and seeing them cease, soon after, all the phenomena that had arisen ceased. Having understood this, because of this cause, he immediately attained Pratyekabuddha Bodhi. Having attained Bodhi, he spoke the verse: 'Because of love, suffering arises, therefore love should be abandoned, one should delight in solitude, like the horn of a rhinoceros.' At that time, the Pratyekabuddha, the World Honored One, recalled: 'I have performed many ascetic practices for the benefit of sentient beings, but not a single sentient being has received my benefit. Today, I pity sentient beings, and in order to benefit them, from whom should I receive food?' At that time, the Pratyekabuddha, the World Honored One, obtained the divine eye, which was pure and surpassing, and universally observed the Jambudvipa.

。彼辟支佛緣覺世尊,見閻浮提一切食盡,唯金色王一食之食五升飯在,既觀察已,起如是心:『我今憐愍彼金色王,為作利益,我今當往取金色王一食而食。』時辟支佛緣覺世尊,即以神通飛空而去,自現其身令人得見,如舍居尼鳥身神通,向金色王饒金城都。

「時,金色王住在樓上,五千大臣一切皆見彼辟支佛緣覺世尊。諸大臣中有一大臣,于先遙見彼辟支佛緣覺世尊,在於遠處漸欲來近。如是見已,向余大臣如是說言:『君等皆看,君等皆看!于彼遠處,有一赤翅舍居尼鳥向此而來。』第二大臣看已答言:『君當諦觀!彼非赤翅舍居尼鳥,彼是羅剎食力惡鬼,欲來至此食我等力,今來食我。』時,彼大臣示金色王,作如是說。時,金色王兩手抹面然後諦觀,諦觀察已,語大臣言:『大臣當知,彼非赤翅舍居尼鳥,亦非羅剎食力惡鬼,彼是仙人憐愍我故,而來至此。』

Record of the Translation of the Golden King Sutra

Shakyamuni Tathagata, in his past lives, had countless reincarnations, and once was a Golden King. Through the karmic cause of giving, he ultimately attained Buddhahood, and proclaimed the Dharma of giving, using this as proof, hence this sutra is called the 'Golden King'. Gao Gong, the Minister of the Wei Dynasty, with a heart of sincere relinquishment, went to Qi to seek the Golden King Sutra, in order to open this Dharma gate, universally showing it to all beings, and within his solemn residence, translated this wonderful scripture.
