如是我聞:

一時,薄伽梵在室羅伐城逝多林給孤獨園。

爾時世尊從定起已,為諸四眾演說無上甘露妙法。時有無量百千大眾前後圍繞,諸根不動聽聞法要。

時諸苾芻既見大眾身心寂靜慇勤聽法,咸皆有疑白佛言:「世尊!唯愿慈悲為斷疑網;如來大師無上法王,今此座中聽法諸人,何故慇勤身心不動,聽聞妙法如飲甘露?」

世尊告曰:「汝等苾芻!我于往昔為求法故,敬心殷重,汝等諦聽!善思念之!吾當為汝說彼因緣。

「乃往古昔,于婆羅痆斯大城中,有王名曰妙色,以法化世,國土豐樂、人民熾盛;無諸鬥戰、詐偽怨賊,亦無病苦、災橫之事。稻蔗牛羊在處充滿,亦無瓦礫荒梗棘刺,恩育兆人如觀一子。其王敬信,意樂賢善,自利利人,發堅固愿,有慈心、希大法,愍人眾、愛群官,除去慳貪,常為大舍。王之夫人名曰妙容,顏貌端正,威儀詳審,眾德圓滿,人所愛樂。其王唯有一男,名端正子。年雖幼小忠孝仁慈,王所愛念無離左右

時諸苾芻既見大眾身心寂靜慇勤聽法,咸皆有疑白佛言:『世尊!唯愿慈悲為斷疑網;如來大師無上法王,今此座中聽法諸人,何故慇勤身心不動,聽聞妙法如飲甘露?』

世尊告曰:『汝等苾芻!我于往昔為求法故,敬心殷重,汝等諦聽!善思念之!吾當為汝說彼因緣。』

『乃往古昔,于婆羅痆斯大城中,有王名曰妙色,以法化世,國土豐樂、人民熾盛;無諸鬥戰、詐偽怨賊,亦無病苦、災橫之事。稻蔗牛羊在處充滿,亦無瓦礫荒梗棘刺,恩育兆人如觀一子。其王敬信,意樂賢善,自利利人,發堅固愿,有慈心、希大法,愍人眾、愛群官,除去慳貪,常為大舍。王之夫人名曰妙容,顏貌端正,威儀詳審,眾德圓滿,人所愛樂。其王唯有一男,名端正子。年雖幼小忠孝仁慈,王所愛念無離左右』

The Sutra of the Cause and Conditions of King Wonderful Color Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by the Tripitaka Master Yijing of the Great Tang Dynasty under Imperial Decree

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Bhagavan was in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti.

At that time, the World Honored One, having arisen from samadhi, was expounding the unsurpassed, sweet dew-like Dharma to the four assemblies. At that time, there were countless hundreds of thousands of people surrounding him, their senses still, listening to the essence of the Dharma.

Then, the Bhikshus, seeing that the assembly was peaceful in body and mind, listening to the Dharma with diligence, all had doubts and said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! We beseech your compassion to dispel our doubts. The Tathagata, the great master, the unsurpassed Dharma King, why are the people in this assembly listening to the Dharma with such diligence, their bodies and minds still, as if drinking sweet dew?'

The World Honored One said: 'You Bhikshus! In the past, for the sake of seeking the Dharma, I was deeply respectful. You should listen attentively! Think well upon it! I will now tell you the cause and conditions of that.'

'In the ancient past, in the great city of Varanasi, there was a king named Wonderful Color, who governed the world with Dharma. His kingdom was prosperous and the people were flourishing. There were no battles, deceptions, or enemies, nor were there any illnesses or disasters. Rice, sugarcane, cattle, and sheep were abundant everywhere. There were no broken tiles, barren lands, or thorns. He nurtured all people as if they were his own children. The king was respectful and faithful, his intentions were virtuous and good. He benefited himself and others, made firm vows, had a compassionate heart, desired the great Dharma, pitied the people, loved his officials, eliminated stinginess, and always gave generously. The king's wife was named Wonderful Appearance. Her face was beautiful, her demeanor was dignified, her virtues were complete, and she was loved by all. The king had only one son, named Upright Son. Although he was young, he was loyal, filial, and kind. The king loved him and never let him leave his side.'

「後於異時,其妙色王心悕勝法,召集群僚而告之曰:『我于妙法情生渴仰,卿等宜應為我詢訪。』時諸大臣前白王曰:『大王當知,大覺世尊出興世者,方有妙法。』王報臣曰:『今雖無佛,試為我求。』時王即便以箱盛妙金寶懸于幢上,鳴鼓宣令普告四方:『若有為我宣勝法者,我以金箱報其恩德,廣設音樂而慶贊之。』如是詔召經歷多時,竟無一人能為說法,時王渴仰懷憂而住。

「爾時帝釋,遍觀地獄,誰善誰惡?誰于勝因情無懈倦?遂見此王為法憂惱,便作是念:『此妙色王久悕勝法,我當試之,其事虛實?』遂即化作大藥叉,身手足異常,面目可畏,來至眾中而白王曰:『仁求勝法,我能說之。』王聞法音歡喜踴躍,告藥叉曰:『密跡主有妙法者,幸愿為說,我當諦聽!』藥叉告曰:『大王今者,生輕法心,謂為易得即令宣說。事不應然,我身饑虛,何能為說?』王聞語已,尋命膳官,所有上食速宜奉進。藥叉告曰:『王廚之食,非我所餐,唯人熱血肉是我常食。』王曰:『人之血肉何可卒求?』藥叉曰:『王之愛子,宜應見與。』王聞此語,便作是念:『我久辛苦尋求勝法,今聞法音便成無價。』時端正子在父邊立,聞是語已,跪白王曰:『唯愿父王勿生憂惱,父之所望當令滿足

『後來,在不同的時間,妙色王心中渴望殊勝的佛法,召集所有大臣告訴他們說:『我對於佛法產生了強烈的渴求,你們應該為我四處尋訪。』當時,大臣們上前稟告國王說:『大王應該知道,只有大覺世尊出世,才會有殊勝的佛法。』國王告訴大臣說:『現在雖然沒有佛,也試著為我尋找。』當時,國王立即用箱子裝滿珍貴的金銀珠寶,懸掛在旗幟上,敲響鼓聲,向四方宣告:『如果有人能為我宣講殊勝的佛法,我將用這個金箱作為報答,並廣設音樂來慶賀讚美。』這樣詔告了很長時間,竟然沒有一個人能夠說法,國王因為渴望佛法而憂愁地住著。 『那時,帝釋天遍觀地獄,誰善良誰邪惡?誰對於殊勝的因緣沒有懈怠?於是看到這位國王因為佛法而憂愁煩惱,便這樣想:『這位妙色王長久以來渴望殊勝的佛法,我應當試探他,看看這件事是真是假?』於是立即化作一個巨大的藥叉,身體手腳異於常人,面目可怖,來到眾人之中,對國王說:『您尋求殊勝的佛法,我能夠宣說。』國王聽到佛法之音,歡喜雀躍,告訴藥叉說:『密跡主,您有殊勝的佛法,希望您能為我宣說,我將認真聽取!』藥叉說:『大王現在,產生了輕視佛法的心,認為容易得到就立即宣說。事情不應該是這樣,我身體飢餓虛弱,怎麼能為您宣說?』國王聽了這話,立即命令膳官,將所有上等的食物快速奉上。藥叉說:『王宮廚房的食物,不是我吃的,只有人的熱血肉是我常吃的。』國王說:『人的血肉怎麼能立刻得到?』藥叉說:『大王的愛子,應該獻給我。』國王聽到這話,便這樣想:『我長久辛苦尋求殊勝的佛法,現在聽到佛法之音就變得無價。』當時,端正的王子站在父親身邊,聽到這話后,跪下稟告國王說:『希望父王不要憂愁煩惱,父親的願望應當讓他滿足。』

『Later, at a different time, King Wonderful Color, with a heart longing for the supreme Dharma, summoned all his ministers and told them: 『I have developed a strong thirst for the Dharma, you should seek it out for me everywhere.』 At that time, the ministers stepped forward and reported to the king: 『Your Majesty should know that only when the Greatly Enlightened World Honored One appears in the world, will there be the supreme Dharma.』 The king told his ministers: 『Although there is no Buddha now, try to find it for me.』 At that time, the king immediately filled a box with precious gold and jewels, hung it on a banner, and beat the drums, proclaiming to all directions: 『If anyone can preach the supreme Dharma for me, I will use this golden box as a reward, and set up music to celebrate and praise.』 He proclaimed this for a long time, but not a single person was able to preach the Dharma, and the king lived in sorrow because of his longing for the Dharma. 『At that time, Emperor Śakra surveyed the lower realms, who was good and who was evil? Who was not weary of the supreme cause? He then saw this king troubled and worried because of the Dharma, and thought: 『This King Wonderful Color has long yearned for the supreme Dharma, I should test him to see if this matter is true or false?』 So he immediately transformed into a huge yaksha, with a body, hands, and feet different from ordinary people, and a terrifying face, and came among the crowd, saying to the king: 『You seek the supreme Dharma, I can preach it.』 The king, hearing the sound of the Dharma, was overjoyed and told the yaksha: 『Lord of the Secret Traces, you have the supreme Dharma, I hope you can preach it for me, I will listen carefully!』 The yaksha said: 『Your Majesty now, has developed a heart that belittles the Dharma, thinking it is easy to obtain and immediately preach. Things should not be like this, my body is hungry and weak, how can I preach for you?』 The king, hearing these words, immediately ordered the cooks to quickly present all the best food. The yaksha said: 『The food from the royal kitchen is not what I eat, only human hot blood and flesh are what I usually eat.』 The king said: 『How can human blood and flesh be obtained immediately?』 The yaksha said: 『Your Majesty's beloved son should be given to me.』 The king, hearing these words, thought: 『I have long and painstakingly sought the supreme Dharma, now hearing the sound of the Dharma, it has become priceless.』 At that time, the handsome prince stood beside his father, and after hearing these words, knelt down and reported to the king: 『I hope that my father will not be worried or troubled, my father's wish should be fulfilled.』

。可持我身奉密跡主,以充其食。』王曰:『汝見求法,舍所愛身。善哉,丈夫!隨汝所樂。』其端正子即便以身奉上藥叉。藥叉受已,對王大眾分裂其身,啖肉飲血。王雖見此,慕法情深,了無驚懼。

「時密跡主復告王曰:『我仍未飽,更與汝妻。』時妙容夫人亦在王側,聞斯語已,亦同其子身奉藥叉。藥叉受已,啖其血肉,復告王曰:『然我饑虛尚未充足。』王便白言:『密跡主!一子已施,妻復重食,尚云饑虛;隨意當取,我願供給,無退轉心。』藥叉告曰:『王之自身,宜與我食。』王曰:『善哉!實不敢吝,然我身死如何聞法?今我先可聽其妙法;既受持已,當即捨身。』

「是時藥叉共王立要,即于無量百千萬億大眾之中,說勝妙伽他曰:

「『由愛故生憂,  由愛故生怖, 若離於愛者,  無憂亦無怖。』

「王既聞此勝妙法已,心生慶幸,歡悅無量,告密跡主曰:『我已聞法,如說奉持。今我此身,隨意當食

現代漢語譯本:『可以拿我的身體供奉密跡主,來充當他的食物。』國王說:『你爲了求法,捨棄自己所珍愛的身體,真是太好了,大丈夫!就隨你的意願吧。』他那端正的兒子立刻將身體獻給了藥叉。藥叉接受后,當著國王和眾人的面,分裂他的身體,吃肉飲血。國王雖然看到這些,但求法的心情很深,沒有絲毫的驚恐。 『這時,密跡主又告訴國王說:『我仍然沒有吃飽,再把你的妻子給我。』當時,妙容夫人也在國王身邊,聽到這話后,也和她的兒子一樣,將身體獻給了藥叉。藥叉接受后,吃她的血肉,又告訴國王說:『然而我飢餓仍然沒有滿足。』國王便說:『密跡主!一個兒子已經施捨給你了,妻子又被你吃了,你還說飢餓;你隨意取用吧,我願意供給,絕不退縮。』藥叉說:『國王你自己的身體,應該給我吃。』國王說:『好啊!我實在不敢吝惜,但是如果我死了,怎麼聽聞佛法呢?現在我先聽聞這美妙的佛法;既然接受了,就立刻捨身。』 『這時,藥叉和國王立下約定,就在無量百千萬億的大眾之中,說了殊勝美妙的偈語:』 『因為愛而產生憂愁,因為愛而產生恐懼,如果遠離了愛,就沒有憂愁也沒有恐懼。』 『國王聽了這殊勝美妙的佛法后,心中感到慶幸,歡喜無量,告訴密跡主說:『我已經聽聞佛法,會按照所說的去做。現在我的身體,隨你吃吧。』

English version: 『You can take my body to offer to the Secret Trace Lord, to serve as his food.』 The king said, 『You, seeking the Dharma, are willing to give up your beloved body. Excellent, noble man! Let it be as you wish.』 His handsome son immediately offered his body to the Yaksha. After accepting it, the Yaksha, in front of the king and the crowd, split his body, eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Although the king saw this, his desire for the Dharma was so deep that he felt no fear. 『At this time, the Secret Trace Lord again told the king, 『I am still not full, give me your wife as well.』 At that time, Lady Miaorong was also by the king』s side. Upon hearing these words, she, like her son, offered her body to the Yaksha. After accepting it, the Yaksha ate her flesh and blood, and again told the king, 『However, my hunger is still not satisfied.』 The king then said, 『Secret Trace Lord! One son has already been given, and my wife has been eaten, yet you still say you are hungry; take whatever you wish, I am willing to provide, and will not retreat.』 The Yaksha said, 『The king, your own body, should be given to me to eat.』 The king said, 『Very well! I truly dare not be stingy, but if I die, how will I hear the Dharma? Now, let me first hear this wonderful Dharma; once I have received it, I will immediately give up my body.』 『At this time, the Yaksha made an agreement with the king, and in the midst of countless millions of people, spoke the supreme and wonderful verse:』 『From love arises sorrow, from love arises fear, if one is free from love, there is neither sorrow nor fear.』 『After the king heard this supreme and wonderful Dharma, his heart was filled with joy and immeasurable happiness. He told the Secret Trace Lord, 『I have already heard the Dharma, and will act as it is said. Now, my body is yours to eat as you wish.』

「時天帝釋,見王為法,身心不動如妙高山,知其必當證無上覺,舍藥叉像,復天帝形,信喜內充怡顏前進,一手攜子、一手持妻,而告王曰:『善哉,善哉!是善丈夫,堅裝甲冑破煩惱軍,濟度愚迷出生死海,觀斯勇猛,必當不久能成無上正等菩提。汝之妻、子我今相付。』時王即便白天帝曰:『善哉,善哉!天主憍尸迦!降大慈悲,為善知識,已能滿我樂法之心。』是時天帝于大眾中忽然不現。」

爾時世尊告諸苾芻:「于汝意云何?勿生異念,彼時妙色王者,即我身是;端正子者,羅怙羅是;妻妙容者,即耶輸陀羅是。汝等當知,我往昔時為求法故,舍所愛妻、子及以已身,尚無所吝,何況余物。由此緣故,今時所有一切大眾從我聞法,專心聽受無有疲厭;又由我昔求法忘勞,今于長夜為眾說法,亦無疲倦。汝等苾芻,當學於我,恭敬尊重,勤求勝法;既聞法已,如說修行,勿為放逸。」

爾時諸苾芻及人天眾聞佛說已,歡喜奉行

『當時天帝釋看到國王爲了佛法,身心不動如妙高山,知道他必定會證得無上覺悟,就捨棄了藥叉的形象,恢復了天帝的形態,內心充滿信喜,面帶笑容地走上前,一手牽著兒子,一手拉著妻子,對國王說:『太好了,太好了!真是個好丈夫,堅強地披上鎧甲,擊破煩惱的軍隊,救度愚昧的眾生脫離生死苦海,看你如此勇猛,必定不久就能成就無上正等菩提。你的妻子和兒子,我現在交還給你。』當時國王立刻對天帝說:『太好了,太好了!天主憍尸迦!你降下大慈悲,做了我的善知識,已經滿足了我喜愛佛法的心。』這時天帝在大眾中忽然消失不見。』 那時,世尊告訴各位比丘:『你們認為如何?不要產生其他的想法,那時那位妙色國王,就是我的前身;那個端正的兒子,就是羅睺羅;妻子妙容,就是耶輸陀羅。你們應當知道,我過去爲了求法,捨棄了所愛的妻子、兒子以及自己的身體,尚且沒有吝惜,更何況其他的東西。因為這個緣故,現在所有的大眾聽我說法,專心聽受而沒有疲倦;又因為我過去求法忘記勞累,現在在漫長的夜晚為大眾說法,也沒有疲倦。你們各位比丘,應當學習我,恭敬尊重,勤奮地追求殊勝的佛法;聽聞佛法之後,要按照所說的去修行,不要放逸。』 當時,各位比丘以及人天大眾聽了佛的說法后,都歡喜地奉行。

『At that time, Śakra, the lord of the gods, seeing the king's body and mind as immovable as Mount Sumeru for the sake of the Dharma, knew that he would surely attain unsurpassed enlightenment. He abandoned his Yaksha form and resumed his form as the lord of the gods. Filled with faith and joy, with a joyful countenance, he stepped forward, holding his son with one hand and his wife with the other, and said to the king: 『Excellent, excellent! You are a good man, firmly donning armor to break the army of afflictions, saving foolish beings from the sea of birth and death. Seeing your courage, you will surely soon achieve unsurpassed, perfect enlightenment. I now return your wife and son to you.』 At that time, the king immediately said to Śakra: 『Excellent, excellent! Lord Śakra! You have shown great compassion and become my good teacher, fulfilling my heart's desire for the Dharma.』 At that moment, Śakra suddenly disappeared from the assembly.』 Then, the World Honored One told the Bhikshus: 『What do you think? Do not have any other thoughts. The king of wondrous appearance at that time was my past self; the handsome son was Rahula; and the wife of wondrous beauty was Yashodhara. You should know that in the past, for the sake of seeking the Dharma, I gave up my beloved wife, son, and even my own body, without any reluctance, let alone other things. Because of this reason, now all the assembly listens to my Dharma, attentively receiving it without fatigue. Also, because I forgot my weariness in seeking the Dharma in the past, now I preach the Dharma to the assembly throughout the long night without fatigue. You Bhikshus should learn from me, respectfully honor, and diligently seek the supreme Dharma. After hearing the Dharma, practice according to what is said, and do not be negligent.』 At that time, all the Bhikshus and the assembly of humans and gods, having heard the Buddha's teachings, joyfully practiced them.
