English version The Sutra of the Moonlight Bodhisattva Spoken by the Buddha Translated by Dharma Bhadra, Minister of the Mingjiao Monastery, Grand Master of the Imperial Secretariat, and Senior Official of the Honglu Temple, under Imperial Decree, from the Tripitaka of the Western Heaven Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Bamboo Grove Monastery in Rajagriha, teaching the Dharma to a large assembly of Bhikshus. At that time, Shariputra and Maudgalyayana approached the Buddha, prostrated themselves with their five limbs touching the ground, and after paying homage to the Buddha's feet, said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One! We cannot bear to see the Buddha enter Parinirvana, and therefore, at this time, we wish to enter Nirvana first.' At that time, among the assembly, there was a Bhikshu who, with palms joined, addressed the Buddha, saying, 'World Honored One! What is the reason that Shariputra and Maudgalyayana, now before the Buddha, wish to enter Nirvana first? We beseech the World Honored One to resolve our doubts.' At that time, the World Honored One said to the Bhikshu, 'Listen carefully! I will tell you. Shariputra and Maudgalyayana have completely eradicated all defilements such as greed, anger, and ignorance. They have accomplished what needed to be done, established the pure life, and will not be subject to future existence. It is not only today that they wish to enter Nirvana first. In the past, in northern India, there was a large city called Sila, which was twelve yojanas long and equally wide. There was a king there named Moonlight, who lived for forty thousand years. He had the divine eye and the power of remembering past lives. His body was beautiful and dignified, possessing all the marks of greatness. His light shone like the full moon in the sky. Wherever he went, he did not need the light of lamps, the sun, or the moon, hence he was called Moonlight. He ruled over sixty-eight thousand kingdoms in the four continents. The times were prosperous, the people were peaceful, and gold, silver, precious jewels, food, clothing, elephants, horses, and carriages were all abundant. At the four gates of the city, there were towers, and the doors and windows were all adorned with various treasures. The streets and alleys were swept clean, and banners, canopies, and pearl necklaces were erected.
English version: Moreover, there were fragrances of aloeswood, turmeric, and sandalwood. When a gentle breeze arose, it carried the fragrance throughout the kingdom and city, so that travelers in carriages and on foot did not smell any foul odors. Everywhere there were flowering and fruit-bearing trees—Tamala trees, Kanikara trees, Asoka trees, Betel trees, Sala trees, Tilaka trees, Dragon Flower trees, Makura trees, Atimukta trees, and Patala trees—all flourishing and luxuriant. Parrots, saris, kalavinkas, and kokila birds, among others, made exquisite sounds among the trees. Inside and outside the city, flowing springs and bathing ponds constantly produced beautiful flowers—utpala flowers, kumuda flowers, pundarika flowers, and so on. Such was the wealth and splendor, with all kinds of magnificent adornments. The Buddha told the monks, 『At that time, the Moonbeam Prince piled up gold, silver, precious jewels, elephants, horses, carriages, food, clothing, bedding, medicine, and various decorative items in the marketplaces, streets, and at the four gates of the city. Then, he struck a golden drum and announced to the people: 『The Moonbeam Prince is giving away all kinds of wealth to everyone. Whatever you need, ask for it, and it will be given.』 At that time, all the beings of Jambudvipa came to the royal city to seek what was being given. None were left without abundance, all became very wealthy, and there was not a single person who was poor or had to walk there.』 『At that time, the Moonbeam Prince thought to himself, 『Although the beings are not poor, they are still not equal to me in what they use.』 So, he gave to all beings fine and exquisite clothing, the most precious jewels, crowns, necklaces, bedding, food, and so on, making them wealthy and splendid, just like the Moonbeam Prince himself. The cities, palaces, pavilions, and gardens were all decorated in various ways, like the Trayastrimsa Heaven.』 『There were seventy-two hundred thousand nayutas of people who constantly resided in this city. There were two thousand five hundred ministers, and two chief ministers: one named Great Moon, and the other named Holder of the Earth. They were handsome in appearance, of pure virtue, profound wisdom, great talent, and extensive knowledge. They always taught all beings with the ten virtues.』
。
At that time, during the full moon, the king was sleeping at night and had a dream. In the dream, the heavenly crown he wore turned into black smoke, and then a ghost came, reached his head, and snatched the crown away. After having this dream, he was worried and frightened, fearing that something ominous would happen. So he thought to himself, 'My king is compassionate and merciful, bestowing kindness on everyone, never refusing those who seek help. Surely there will be an evil person who will come to beg for my head.' Having this thought, he immediately used seven treasures to create a jeweled head, so that if there was a beggar, he could use this as a substitute. At that time, the minister of state, Holder of the Earth, also had a dream, in which he saw the body of the Moonbeam King, with his limbs scattered. He immediately summoned the Brahmins to interpret the dream's good or bad omen. The Brahmins said, 'This dream is very ominous, there will surely be a person from afar who will come to beg for the king's head.' Upon hearing this, Holder of the Earth wept with grief, 'Why would my king have such a great disaster?' At that time, twelve thousand five hundred close ministers all had bad dreams, in which they saw banners and flags falling to the ground, golden drums not sounding, loved ones separating, and people weeping with sorrow. After having such dreams, they discussed together, saying, 'If the king is not well, who will save all living beings? How can we be at peace?' At this time, the Moonbeam Prince again told his ministers, 'For as long as I live, I will give to all living beings, without interruption.' At that time, in Fragrant Intoxication Mountain, there was a great Brahmin named Evil Eye, who was intelligent and wise, skilled in various arts. He knew that the Moonbeam Prince had opened a great almsgiving event at the four gates of the city, beating drums to announce, and widely informing all directions, 'Those who seek will be provided for, and there will be no lack.' 'I will now go there to beg for the king's head.' After saying this, he descended from Fragrant Intoxication Mountain. There were heavenly beings in the mountain who knew that the Brahmin was coming to beg for the king's head, and they lamented with grief, 'Alas, alas! This king has a heart of compassion and mercy, benefiting and bringing joy to all living beings; if he were to die, the world would be so unfortunate!'
English version: When this was spoken, the sky and earth became dark, the sun and moon disappeared, springs dried up, violent winds arose suddenly, sand and stones flew, trees were broken, and the earth shook violently, presenting such inauspicious signs. Not far from the city, there was a sage with five supernatural powers, named Miśvāmitra, who, along with five hundred followers, always protected and cared for living beings with compassion. Seeing these omens, he was deeply worried and said to Maṇavaka, 'Surely there will be a disaster befalling the ruler. How shall we protect him?' In the sky, the Kinnaras and the gods all shed tears, like a light rain; all the people were filled with fear. At this time, the evil-eyed Brahmin was about to enter the city. The celestial guardians of the city went before Prince Moonlight and said, 'Now there is an evil man coming from Fragrant Intoxication Mountain, harboring murderous intent, wanting to beg for your head. You must not grant it. You should protect yourself and secure your sacred body.' Upon hearing this, the king was instead delighted and exclaimed, 'Excellent! This will allow me to perfect the pāramitā of giving.' At this time, the evil-eyed Brahmin entered the royal city; the celestial gatekeepers, seeing the Brahmin's ugly appearance, blocked him outside the gate and would not let him in. Then, Prince Moonlight, knowing that he had arrived but was being kept outside the city, told his minister, Great Moon, 'There is a Brahmin coming from Fragrant Intoxication Mountain who wishes to see me. Tell the gatekeepers not to obstruct him.' Great Moon, receiving the order, told the gatekeepers, 'Let him in.' Great Moon, having seen the Brahmin, asked him, 'What do you seek by coming here?' The Brahmin said, 'I have heard that Prince Moonlight is compassionate to all beings and holds great almsgiving gatherings, and that he is not stingy with anything requested. I have come here today to beg for your head.'
English version: Great Moon said, 『Brahmin! A king』s head is formed of pus and blood, and will eventually rot and decay. What use is it to you now that you beg for it? I have a head of seven treasures, and also various gold, silver, and precious jewels, all of which I will bestow upon you, so that your descendants may be wealthy forever.』 The Brahmin said, 『I originally begged for a head, not for treasures.』 At that time, the two ministers wept like rain, grieving and distressed: 『How can we avoid this disaster?』 Then the Brahmin went before the king, bowed, and stood to one side, joining his palms and saying, 『I have heard that the king is compassionate and bestows everything. I have come from afar, only to beg for the king』s head. May you be compassionate and joyfully give it.』 And he spoke a verse: 『A Bodhisattva aspires to supreme wisdom, Abiding in the most excellent pure Dharma, May you be compassionate and quickly give up your head, To perfect the Paramita of giving.』 Then, Prince Moonlight rose, joined his palms, and spoke a verse: 『This impure body born of parents, You seek my head, I joyfully give it, Fulfilling your original wish, and allowing you to return content, So that I may quickly attain the fruit of Bodhi.』 Having spoken this verse, he said to the Brahmin, 『Do not despise my head, with its marrow, pus, and blood, skin and flesh connected, without purity, and I will give it to you, fulfilling your wish.』 At that time, the Brahmin was very happy. When the king was about to cut off his head, he removed his crown; at that moment, all the crowns in Jambudvipa fell to the ground, and people were terrified. The two ministers, unable to bear seeing the king give up his life, took their own lives there; by the power of their good roots, they were reborn in the Great Brahma Palace. Then, the Bhuma Yaksha, in the empty sky, cried out loudly, 『Alas, Prince! Now you are about to die.』 And hundreds of thousands of millions of people rushed to the palace, weeping and shedding tears, grieving over the separation. The king then preached the Dharma to comfort them, causing them to develop the aspiration for the Way.
The Brahmin said, 'If the king is to give up his head, it should be done in a clean place.' The king then said, 'I have a garden named Mani Treasure, with lush flowers and fruits, flowing springs and bathing pools, and various magnificent decorations, it is the best place; what do you think about giving up my head here?' The Brahmin said, 'It is appropriate to go there quickly.' The king then took his sword and went to that garden, stood under a champak tree, and told the Brahmin, 'I am now going to give up my head, come and cut it off.' The Brahmin said, 'If the king does not cut it himself, but has me hold the blade, it is not an act of giving.' At that time, a heavenly being who guarded the garden, seeing this, wept with sorrow and told the Brahmin, 'You are a great evil person! Prince Moonlight is compassionate to all, and universally benefits all living beings. Why here, do you want to harm the prince's life?' The king told the heavenly being, 'Do not say such things, obstructing my virtuous act. In countless past lives, I have been a great king; in this garden, I have given up my head thousands of times. At that time, all the heavenly beings did not obstruct me. In the past, to save a hungry tiger, I gave up my body and life, surpassing Maitreya Bodhisattva by forty kalpas, and at that time, the heavenly beings did not obstruct me either. Today, you should generate a joyful heart, and you will gain victory.' Prince Moonlight then told all the sages of the eight divisions of gods and dragons, 'I am now giving up my head, not seeking to be a wheel-turning king, not seeking to be reborn in heaven, not seeking to be a demon king, not seeking to be Indra, not seeking to be Brahma, but seeking to attain unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, so that those who have not accepted the teachings will turn their hearts and accept the teachings, those who have already accepted the teachings will quickly attain liberation, and those who have attained liberation will fully realize the ultimate shore of stillness and extinction. Also, I hope that after my death, my relics will be like white mustard seeds, and in the Mani Treasure garden, a great pagoda will be built, so that all living beings can worship and make offerings, and upon seeing and hearing, rejoice; after death, they will all be reborn in heaven, generate the Bodhi mind, and escape the cycle of birth and death.'

'Having made the vow,' the Brahmin said, 'the king's relinquishing of his inner wealth is extremely rare. In the future, he will quickly attain Buddhahood.' As he spoke these words, the king tied his hair to the branch of an Ashoka tree, then took a sharp sword and cut off his own head. At that time, the three thousand great thousand worlds shook in six ways. In the void, the devas praised, saying, 'Excellent, excellent! The current Moonbeam Prince will attain Buddhahood.' They rained down utpala flowers, padma flowers, kumuda flowers, and mandara flowers, as well as the fragrance of agarwood, turmeric, and sandalwood, offering various kinds of worship. Then, using sandalwood, they cremated the remains, collected the relics, and built a stupa each in the Mani Garden and at the crossroads, constantly making offerings. All sentient beings, present and future, who walk, stand, sit, or lie down in this garden, and who gaze upon and make offerings before the stupa, will, after death, be reborn in the six desire heavens and the Brahma heavens. At that time, the Buddha told the bhikshus, 'The Moonbeam Prince of the past is now my own body; the two ministers, Great Moon and Holder of the Earth, are now Shariputra and Maudgalyayana; the evil-eyed Brahmin is now Devadatta. Because of this cause, he requested to enter Nirvana before the Buddha.' At that time, the bhikshus, having heard what the Buddha said, were all greatly delighted, accepted it with faith, and practiced accordingly. They bowed to the Buddha and withdrew.
