English version The Sutra of Prince Mupo Spoken by the Buddha Translated by An Shigao, a Tripitaka Master from Parthia during the Later Han Dynasty Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Shravasti, in Anathapindika's Park. At that time, the Buddha said to the monks: 'In my past life, I was the crown prince of the kingdom of Varanasi, named Mupo; from the moment I was born, I was different, with a handsome appearance, unparalleled in the world. I could recall my past lives, the events of countless kalpas, the good and evil I had experienced, the rewards of merit and demerit, the length of life, beauty and ugliness; from this life to that life, where I came from, and where I went, I knew clearly. At the age of thirteen, I closed my mouth and did not speak.' 'The king had only this one son, and all the people of the country loved him very much, hoping that he would inherit the throne; however, because I could recall my past lives, the rise and fall of fortunes over billions of years, I remained silent until the age of thirteen, abandoning my physical form, my mind dwelling in emptiness, drifting aimlessly, not speaking, enduring hunger and cold with equanimity, as simple as a withered tree—although I had eyes and ears, I did not see or hear; my wisdom was profound, yet it was as if I had no will; I was not afraid of humiliation, nor did I have hatred or love; like a blind person, like a deaf person, I did not speak of east or west; my state was like that of ignorance, different from ordinary people.' 'The father king was worried and very distressed, deeply ashamed in front of neighboring countries, fearing ridicule. Therefore, he summoned the Brahmins of the country and asked them: 'Why can't this child speak?' The Brahmins looked at each other and said: 'This child is an evil person, although his face is handsome and beautiful, his heart is not close; looking at his silent appearance, he intends to harm his parents, endanger the country, and exterminate the clan, which will happen soon, and he cannot be raised. Since he cannot speak, what benefit is he to the king! Now that the king no longer has sons, it is all because of this evil son's obstruction, it is he who prevents the great king from having more sons. The king should abandon him and bury him alive.'
English version: 'Only by preserving your own life can you protect the country, secure the clan, and then have the chance to bear noble offspring; otherwise, the situation will be extremely dangerous!' The king believed this absurd and foolish statement, thinking it was true. He became worried and restless, no longer enjoying music and dance, and even delicious food tasted bland. He consulted with senior officials and ministers, saying, 'What should be done?' Some ministers suggested abandoning him far away in a remote, uninhabited mountain area; others suggested throwing him into deep water. One minister said, 'We should follow the master's words, but instead, dig a deep pit with a room-like space beside it, provide him with food and five servants, and place him alive inside. Let fate decide, and let him perish on his own.' The king followed this minister's advice and sent servants to take him out for burial that very morning. The prince felt sorrow in his heart, grieved by the king's foolishness and delusion, and his compassion was boundless. His mother also felt grief, her heart aching, saying, 'I have no blessing to bear a son, and my ill fate has brought this disaster, my heart is breaking with pain.' She sobbed and wept, sighing with sorrow, and was reluctant to part. Since things had come to this point, she had no choice but to give up, so she sent people to carry him out, preparing to bury him. She took out all of the prince's clothes, blankets, necklaces, and jewels to give to him. They sent people outside again, took off all his clothes and jewels, put them aside, and then started digging the pit together. Before the pit was finished, Prince Mupo was alone in the carriage, deeply contemplating, and said to himself, 'Now everyone from the king down to the common people thinks that I am truly deaf, foolish, and mute, unable to speak; the reason I don't speak is precisely to abandon worldly ties, secure myself from harm, and free my spirit from suffering, but now I am about to be harmed by lies.' Since he was about to lose his life and be framed by those people, he silently took his clothes and jewels. The people digging the pit did not notice that Mupo had taken the things.
。
English version: At that time, Mu Po went to the water's edge, cleansed himself, applied fragrant oils to his body, and put on his clothes and ornaments. He went to the pit and asked, 'What is this pit for?' His servants replied, 'The king has a son named Mu Po, who is deaf, mute, and foolish. He is thirteen years old and cannot speak. The king asked the Brahmins, and the Brahmin master said, 「He should be buried alive, so that the whole country will be safe and prosperous, and it will benefit future generations. That is why we are doing this.」 We are digging this pit to bury Mu Po.' Mu Po immediately said, 'I am Prince Mu Po.' The people were immediately terrified, their hair stood on end, and they ran back to look at his carriage, but Mu Po was not there. They returned to the pit, observed carefully, and heard the sound of his voice, which was very unusual, and his radiance was like the moon, a rare sight in the world. When he moved, those around him stopped walking, and those sitting stood up. Birds and beasts all gathered, prostrating themselves before the prince, listening to him speak. Mu Po then said, 'Look at my hands and feet, observe my appearance. Why are you, who are so deluded, deceived by lies, taking falsehood for truth, and abandoning a living being?' His words were eloquent, and those around him were filled with fear and respect, their fear completely exposed. All, high and low, were in agreement and obedient. Their demeanor was very flustered, they were trembling with fear, looking at each other, their faces turning pale. They all said, 'The prince is truly divine, it is as such.' They all stepped forward to pay their respects, kowtowing and begging for mercy, 'We beg you to forgive our sins, and let us return to the palace together, to your father.' Mu Po said, 'Now that I have been abandoned, it is not appropriate to return. You go yourselves and inform the king.' The servants immediately ran to tell the king. His mother was deeply saddened and sent people to inquire about the situation. The servants said, 'The prince is very miraculous. When he speaks, it is truly terrifying. Those who hear it are all in a panic, and the roads are full of people.' The king was astonished, both happy and sad, and deeply wondered what was happening. The king and his wife then rode together in a carriage to welcome the prince. The people of the whole country, both high and low, were running, and the roads were filled with onlookers.
The ministers said, 'The crown prince seems to desire to see a divine being.' Before the king arrived, Mupo thought to himself, 'I should practice the Way; this thought has just arisen.' The Heavenly Emperor Sakra then transformed a garden with a bathing pond, various fruit trees, and other trees, creating unparalleled joy. Mupo immediately took off his fine clothes and jewelry, transforming into a Taoist, properly dressed. As the king was about to arrive, he saw Mupo sitting under a tree. Mupo, seeing the king arrive, rose to greet him, and the king bowed to him. Mupo said, 'Great King, please sit.' The king, hearing Mupo's voice and seeing his majestic and divine radiance, which shook heaven and earth and was unparalleled, was overjoyed and said to Mupo, 'Let us return to the kingdom together, and you shall take the throne and govern the country; I request to retire.' Mupo said, 'No, no! I fear the hardships of hell, and I am filled with endless sorrow and pain. I once served as the king of this country, named Suxian, and governed with the righteous law, practicing all good deeds. For twenty-five years, I did not use whips or weapons, and there were no prisoners in the jail. I bestowed charity and kindness, spread grace and virtue, and helped the poor without greed or stinginess. Although I acted in this way, I still committed minor faults and ultimately fell into hell for over sixty thousand years; I was steamed, peeled, and torn apart, suffering unbearable pain, unable to die, and unable to live. At that time, even if my parents were alive, possessing countless wealth, being rich and noble, and experiencing boundless joy, how could they know that I was there, enduring such severe torture in hell? How could they share my suffering? They could not.' 'Why did I fall into hell and suffer punishment? In the past, when I was the great king of this country, the small kings and vassal regions were all under my rule. My nature was kind and benevolent, my virtue was pure, and my laws were not strict. The small kings all looked down on me and conspired together, saying, 「This great king is cautious, kind, and weak, his authority is insufficient to control, and his virtue is inadequate to rule a great country; we should attack him together and depose him.」 So they led their armies to attack the great country.'
The king of the time had to consider, and bestowed upon them rare treasures, and then soothed and comforted them with high positions and generous salaries, inducing them to settle down. They all then ceased their disturbances and returned to their own countries. Before long, they came to attack again, not just once. The officials of the great country were all very angry and reported to the king, 『Those small countries are foolish and unrighteous, not considering their own sins, and repeatedly offend us. They have caused rebellion, offended the sovereign, made the people restless, and the guards never cease. They should be punished to eliminate the harm.』 The king said, 『As the parents of the people, we should devote ourselves to benevolent teachings, forgive ourselves, nurture all things, and save the people in times of danger; they are like infants, we should pity their ignorance, gradually guide them, and not bear to harm them.』 The king had a great compassionate heart, universally pitying all lives, and never had the thought of killing. The officials could not bear to see the great country repeatedly bullied by the subordinate small countries, and in anger, disregarding the danger, they privately sent troops to attack the countries, and then massacred the people. 『When the king heard of this, he was very grieved, shed tears for it, and mourned for the people who died in the countries, as if he had lost his own children, his pity was boundless. When the small kings saw that the great king was so compassionate and pitied the people, they all surrendered and came to submit to him. For those who came to submit, the great king would set up kitchens for them, and the high officials would prepare meals, all of which required slaughtering cattle, sheep, and livestock to prepare various delicacies. When slaughtering, they always had to report first. Although the king was compassionate, the matter had come to this point, and he could only nod in agreement. Because of this matter, he was guilty, and his toil was such. Every time he thought of this, he felt cold in his heart, his hair stood on end, and his body was weak and cold with sweat. The reason I do not speak is because I recall the past experiences of good and bad fortune, safety and danger, success and failure, and I am afraid of encountering them again, so I have kept silent for thirteen years, hoping to avoid mistakes through silence, get rid of filth, escape the toil of the world, bid farewell to the secular world forever, and not encounter misfortune. Just now I thought of keeping silent again, but I am worried that if the king finds out, I will be buried alive, and I am afraid that the king will suffer such a disaster again in the future, and once I enter hell, there will be no day of coming out.』
English version: 'It is not my intention to offend you, O King, that I speak again. I merely wish to pursue the Way, to keep my mind in a state of non-action, and I do not desire to be a king. People live in this world as if in a dream, and the joys of family are but fleeting moments. Counting the days, there are not many left, yet worries and fears continue to grow. There is little joy and much suffering, with countless troubles. Therefore, the wise see the country, wealth, and love as burdens, and all desires as dust. If I were to become king, I would again become arrogant and indulgent, seeking pleasure, causing the people to worry and be troubled, and become a great calamity for the world. Therefore, I wish to eliminate worries, abandon the entanglements of the world, trace back to the source, and save those who have not yet been delivered. Life is like a temporary stay, there is nothing to rely on, years pass and age advances, life is short, and there is no time to hesitate, as one drifts further from the Way. I do not covet wealth and honor, nor do I value treasures. I abandon worldly glory, aspire to the Great Way, soar far away, and save myself in this world.' The father king said, 'How can this be? You are a wise man, you should consider things more carefully, you cannot just abandon me and leave.' The king's heart was filled with both sorrow and joy, and he deeply regretted his previous actions. The prince replied, 'Where have you ever heard of a father and son abandoning each other at birth? Affection has already been broken, and flesh and blood have been separated. This is because of my own faults, and I cannot listen to your arrangements. Forcing a reunion will only increase toil and trouble.' The father, hearing his son's words and seeing his firm resolve, was at a loss, ashamed and embarrassed, and had no words to reply. The king said, 'If, as you were a king in your previous life, you practiced all kinds of good deeds, and only had a few minor faults, which were not remembered, you still had to suffer and toil to such an extent. Now, I govern the country without following the righteous law, without any good deeds, but instead pursuing evil, arrogant and indulgent, acting in a completely dangerous manner. How great is my sin?' So he let the prince leave to practice and learn the Way. The prince then abandoned the country and the throne, did not envy worldly glory, focused his mind, practiced the Way and cultivated virtue, accumulated merit, and finally attained Buddhahood. After attaining enlightenment, the Buddha then saved countless beings in the ten directions, for countless eons, without feeling weary. Such is the diligence and hardship experienced by a Bodhisattva.

The Buddha said, 'At that time, the prince was myself; the father king is now my father, Suddhodana; the mother was Maya; the soothsayer Brahmin was Devadatta; and the servant was the five ascetics, Ajnatakaundinya and his companions. All who wish to follow the path should obey the Buddha's teachings and not violate the scriptures and precepts. Although the path is difficult, it is better than falling into the three evil realms and the eight difficulties. Violating the precepts will lead to falling into evil realms. Even if one escapes and is reborn as a human, one will be poor and miserable, or become a slave, without freedom. By upholding the precepts and doing good deeds, one can attain the three honored positions.' After the Buddha spoke these words, all the monks, heavenly beings, and people were delighted and bowed to the Buddha.
