聞如是:

一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,告諸比丘:

「昔者有王名波羅㮈。王有一太子,字名墓魄,生有無窮之明,端正妙潔,無有雙比。父母奇之,供養瞻視,須其長大,當爲立字。然太子結舌不語十有三歲,恬惔質樸,志若死灰,意如枯木;目不視色,耳不聽音,狀類瘖啞聾盲之人。於是父母患而厭之。

「王語夫人:『當奈之何?此子將為他國所笑。』夫人語王:『當召相師相之,知當語不?』王即召婆羅門師,使相太子。婆羅門言:『此子非是世間人,為是熒惑耳。外為端正,內懷不祥;危國滅宗,將至不久。不可畜養,宜當生埋,誅而殺之。不除此子,則絕國嗣。』王語夫人:『當如之何?今若不除此子,恐后無復立太子。』於是夫人隨王所為。

「王即召國中大臣共議之。一臣言:『當遠徙深山無人之處。』一臣言:『當沒深水中。』一臣言:『但當隨師所語,掘作深坑而生埋之。』王即隨是一臣所語,即召外陣兵三千餘人,使掘地作藏

現代漢語譯本 佛說太子墓魄經 (開元錄中記載:也作沐魄或慕魄) 我聽聞是這樣的: 一時,佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園,告訴眾比丘: 『過去有一位國王,名叫波羅㮈。國王有一個太子,名字叫墓魄,他出生時就具有無窮的光明,容貌端正美好,世上無人能比。他的父母對他感到驚奇,供養並照看他,等待他長大,準備為他取名字。然而,太子卻結舌不語,已經十三歲了,他安靜淡泊,質樸無華,心志如同死灰,意念如同枯木;眼睛不看顏色,耳朵不聽聲音,樣子就像是又聾又啞的人。因此,他的父母感到憂慮和厭惡。 國王對夫人說:『這可怎麼辦?這個孩子將來會被其他國家嘲笑。』夫人對國王說:『應該召見相師來為他看相,看看他是否會說話?』國王就召見了婆羅門相師,讓他為太子看相。婆羅門說:『這個孩子不是世間的人,他是個妖星。外表端正,內心卻懷著不祥之兆;他會危害國家,導致宗族滅亡,很快就會發生。不能養著他,應該把他活埋,殺了他。不除掉這個孩子,就會斷絕國家的後嗣。』國王對夫人說:『這該怎麼辦?現在如果不除掉這個孩子,恐怕以後就無法再立太子了。』於是夫人就聽從了國王的決定。 國王就召集國內的大臣們一起商議。一位大臣說:『應該把他遷徙到深山無人之處。』一位大臣說:『應該把他沉到深水裡。』一位大臣說:『就應該按照相師所說的,挖一個深坑把他活埋了。』國王就聽從了其中一位大臣的建議,立即召集了三千多名外陣士兵,讓他們挖地建造藏身之處。

English version The Buddha Speaks the Sutra of Prince Mubo's Spirit (Recorded in the Kaiyuan Record: also written as Mu Po or Mu Po) Translated by the Yuezhi Tripiṭaka Master Zhu Fahu of the Western Jin Dynasty Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika Garden in Shravasti, and he told the assembled bhikshus: 'In the past, there was a king named Bāranā. The king had a prince named Mubo, who was born with boundless radiance, with a dignified and beautiful appearance, unmatched in the world. His parents were amazed by him, and they provided for and cared for him, waiting for him to grow up, preparing to give him a name. However, the prince was tongue-tied and did not speak, and he had been so for thirteen years. He was quiet and detached, simple and unadorned, his will like dead ashes, his mind like withered wood; his eyes did not see colors, his ears did not hear sounds, and he appeared like a deaf and mute person. Therefore, his parents felt worried and disgusted. The king said to the queen: 'What should we do? This child will be laughed at by other countries in the future.' The queen said to the king: 'We should summon a fortune-teller to examine him, to see if he will speak?' The king then summoned a Brahmin fortune-teller and had him examine the prince. The Brahmin said: 'This child is not a person of this world, he is an evil star. Outwardly he is dignified, but inwardly he harbors misfortune; he will endanger the country and lead to the destruction of the clan, which will happen soon. He cannot be kept, he should be buried alive, and killed. If this child is not eliminated, the succession of the country will be cut off.' The king said to the queen: 'What should we do? If we do not eliminate this child now, I am afraid that we will not be able to establish another prince in the future.' So the queen followed the king's decision. The king then summoned the ministers of the country to discuss the matter together. One minister said: 'He should be moved to a remote and uninhabited place in the deep mountains.' One minister said: 'He should be sunk in deep water.' One minister said: 'We should just follow what the fortune-teller said, dig a deep pit and bury him alive.' The king then followed the advice of one of the ministers, and immediately summoned more than three thousand soldiers from the outer ranks, and had them dig the ground to build a hiding place.

。給世資糧,侍以五仆,太子衣服、瓔珞、珠寶盡還太子。於是夫人心欲傷絕:『我獨無相,生子薄命,乃值此殃,事不得止。』涕淚哽咽,不能自勝。

「於是復送太子著正殿上,五百夫人見太子端正姝好,無有雙比,皆言:『太子何以不語,而當生埋?』五百婇女見太子端正姝好,皆為太子作禮而言:『何以不語,而當生埋?』各為太子作其伎樂。太子默然,不觀不聽。

「復送太子著外殿上,五百大臣見太子端正姝好,無有雙比,前白大王:『太子非是不語之人,且復宿留,語在不久。婆羅門言,不可審信。』王語大臣:『此是國事,非卿所知。』

「作藏已訖,來迎太子。王語其仆:『使太子載我四望象車,令國中人民就觀,太子當語。若語者,便載來還。』於是太子乘車尋路。國中耆舊大臣皆宛轉車前而言:『太子!要當一語。若不語者,便以車輾我上過去。』遮蠡虎賁扶避使過。遂侍太子遂到藏所。時有數千萬人,皆隨太子往到藏所,皆塞藏戶,太子復不得前。遮蠡虎賁麾人便卻。太子適前,飛鳥走獸復驚來前,繞藏三匝,復塞藏戶,太子復不得前。於是太子舉右手,住而言:『我正不語,而當生埋。我適欲語,恐入地獄。我所以不語者,欲安身避害,濟神離苦,是以不語

『給予世人資糧,並安排五位僕人侍奉,太子的衣服、瓔珞、珠寶都歸還給太子。』於是夫人內心悲痛欲絕:『我真是沒有福相,生下的兒子命薄,竟然遭遇這樣的災禍,事情無法阻止。』她哭泣哽咽,無法控制自己的情緒。 『於是又把太子送到正殿上,五百位夫人看到太子端正俊美,舉世無雙,都說:『太子為什麼不說話,卻要被活埋?』五百位宮女看到太子端正俊美,都向太子行禮說:『為什麼不說話,卻要被活埋?』她們各自為太子表演歌舞。太子沉默不語,不看也不聽。 『又把太子送到外殿上,五百位大臣看到太子端正俊美,舉世無雙,上前稟告大王:『太子不是不說話的人,請再留他一段時間,他很快就會說話的。婆羅門的話,不可輕信。』國王對大臣說:『這是國家大事,不是你們所能知道的。』 『地窖建造完畢后,來迎接太子。國王對他的僕人說:『讓太子乘坐我的四望象車,讓國中的人民都來觀看,太子應該會說話的。如果說話了,就帶他回來。』於是太子乘車沿著道路前進。國中德高望重的大臣都跪在車前說:『太子!一定要說一句話。如果不說,就讓車從我身上碾過去。』遮蠡虎賁扶開他們讓他們讓路。於是侍奉太子到達地窖。當時有數千萬人,都跟隨太子來到地窖,都堵住了地窖的入口,太子又無法前進。遮蠡虎賁揮手讓人退後。太子剛要上前,飛鳥走獸又驚慌地來到前面,繞著地窖轉了三圈,又堵住了地窖的入口,太子又無法前進。於是太子舉起右手,停下來說道:『我正是因為不說話,才要被活埋。我如果想說話,恐怕會下地獄。我之所以不說話,是爲了保全自身,躲避災禍,使精神脫離痛苦,所以才不說話。』

'Giving the world provisions, and attending with five servants, the prince's clothes, necklaces, and jewels were all returned to the prince.' Thereupon, the lady's heart was about to break with grief: 'I am truly without good fortune, having given birth to a son with a wretched fate, and now encountering such a calamity, there is no stopping this.' She wept and sobbed, unable to control herself. 'Then they sent the prince to the main hall again, and the five hundred ladies, seeing the prince's upright and handsome appearance, unparalleled in the world, all said: 'Why does the prince not speak, yet he is to be buried alive?' The five hundred palace maids, seeing the prince's upright and handsome appearance, all bowed to the prince and said: 'Why do you not speak, yet you are to be buried alive?' They each performed music and dances for the prince. The prince remained silent, neither looking nor listening. 'They sent the prince to the outer hall again, and the five hundred ministers, seeing the prince's upright and handsome appearance, unparalleled in the world, stepped forward to report to the king: 'The prince is not a person who does not speak, please keep him for a while longer, he will speak soon. The words of the Brahmins are not to be trusted.' The king said to the ministers: 'This is a matter of state, not something you can understand.' 'After the vault was completed, they came to receive the prince. The king said to his servants: 'Have the prince ride in my four-view elephant chariot, so that the people of the kingdom may all come to see, and the prince should speak. If he speaks, then bring him back.' So the prince rode in the chariot along the road. The venerable ministers of the kingdom all knelt before the chariot and said: 'Prince! You must say a word. If you do not speak, then let the chariot run over me.' The Chali guards pushed them aside to make way. Thus, attending the prince, they arrived at the vault. At that time, there were tens of millions of people, all following the prince to the vault, all blocking the entrance to the vault, and the prince could not advance. The Chali guards waved for people to step back. Just as the prince was about to go forward, birds and beasts came in alarm, circling the vault three times, again blocking the entrance to the vault, and the prince could not advance. Then the prince raised his right hand, stopped, and said: 'It is precisely because I do not speak that I am to be buried alive. If I wanted to speak, I fear I would go to hell. The reason I do not speak is to preserve myself, avoid disaster, and free my spirit from suffering, therefore I do not speak.'

。而信誑詐之言,謂我聾盲為實瘖啞。』

「是時人民聞太子語有絕妙之音,世所希聞,行者為止,坐者為之起,皆言:『太子神聖乃爾。』皆前叩頭,求恩悔過,原赦我罪。其仆聞之,歡喜踴躍,馳白大王:『太子已語,上徹蒼天,下徹黃泉。飛鳥走獸皆來伏聽於太子前。』

「王聞太子語,歡欣踴躍,即與夫人駕四望象車,往迎太子。太子顧視父王,下車避道,四拜而起而言:『勞屈父王遠來見迎。今日父子已生相棄捐,恩愛已乖,骨肉以離,其義甚愆,不可聽觀。』王語太子:『不可!不可!汝為智者,當原不及。共還入國,舉位與汝,我自避退。』太子答言:『我曾為國王,用行有缺漏故,下入地獄六萬餘歲,蒸煮剝裂,其痛難忍。當此之時,父母寧能知我地獄苦痛劇不?寧能分取我身上痛不?我厭畏地獄苦,是以結舌不語十有三歲,冀得免瑕,除去垢穢,出於塵埃之外,不與罪會。除憂去累,念生若寄。不可選軟,去道日遠。高翔遠逝,自濟於世。世間無常,恍惚如夢;室家歡娛,須臾間耳;歡樂暫有,憂苦延長。』

「王知太子意堅志固,遂聽學道。於是太子棄國捐王,入山求道,思惟禪定。壽終即生兜術天上,畢天之壽,下生世間,為迦維羅衛王作太子,自致得佛

卻相信那些虛假欺騙的話,說我聾盲是真的,瘖啞也是真的。 這時,人們聽到太子說話的聲音非常美妙,世間罕見,行走的人停下腳步,坐著的人也站了起來,都說:『太子真是神聖啊。』他們都上前叩頭,請求寬恕,希望赦免他們的罪過。他的僕人聽到后,歡喜雀躍,跑去告訴大王:『太子已經說話了,聲音上達蒼天,下達黃泉。飛鳥走獸都來到太子面前俯首聽命。』 國王聽到太子說話,歡欣鼓舞,立刻和夫人乘坐四望象車,前去迎接太子。太子看到父王,下車避讓到路旁,向父王行了四拜,然後起身說道:『勞煩父王遠道而來迎接。今日父子之間已經到了互相拋棄的地步,恩愛已經破裂,骨肉已經分離,這實在是不合情理,不能再看了。』國王對太子說:『不可!不可!你是有智慧的人,應當原諒我的過失。我們一起回國,我把王位讓給你,我自己退隱。』太子回答說:『我曾經做過國王,因為行為有缺失,所以下到地獄六萬多年,遭受蒸煮剝裂的痛苦,難以忍受。在那個時候,父母難道能知道我在地獄的痛苦嗎?難道能分擔我身上的痛苦嗎?我厭惡畏懼地獄的痛苦,所以才閉口不言十三年,希望能夠免除過失,清除污垢,脫離塵世,不與罪惡為伍。除去憂愁和牽累,認為生命就像寄居一樣。不能選擇安逸,那樣會離道越來越遠。我要高飛遠去,自己救度自己。世間無常,恍惚如夢;家庭的歡樂,只是短暫的瞬間;快樂是暫時的,憂愁和痛苦卻很長久。』 國王知道太子意志堅定,於是聽任太子去學道。於是太子拋棄國家和王位,入山求道,思考禪定。壽命終結后就生到兜率天,在天上享盡天壽,然後下生到世間,成為迦維羅衛國的太子,最終成就佛陀。

Instead, they believed the deceitful and false words, saying that my deafness and blindness were real, and that my muteness was also real. At that time, when the people heard the prince's voice, it was so wonderful and rare in the world that those who were walking stopped, and those who were sitting stood up. They all said, 'The prince is truly divine.' They all came forward, bowed their heads, sought forgiveness, and hoped to be pardoned for their sins. His servant, upon hearing this, was overjoyed and ran to tell the king, 'The prince has spoken, his voice reaching the heavens above and the underworld below. Birds and beasts have all come to bow and listen before the prince.' The king, upon hearing the prince speak, was overjoyed and immediately, with his queen, rode in a four-view elephant carriage to welcome the prince. The prince, seeing his father, got out of the carriage and stepped aside, bowing four times to his father before rising and saying, 'It is a hardship for my father to come so far to welcome me. Today, the relationship between father and son has reached the point of mutual abandonment, love has been broken, and flesh and blood have been separated. This is truly unreasonable and cannot be witnessed any longer.' The king said to the prince, 'No! No! You are a wise man, you should forgive my shortcomings. Let us return to the kingdom together, I will give the throne to you, and I will retire.' The prince replied, 'I was once a king, and because my actions were flawed, I descended into hell for over sixty thousand years, enduring the pain of being steamed, boiled, and torn apart, which was unbearable. At that time, could my parents have known the pain I suffered in hell? Could they have shared the pain on my body? I abhorred and feared the pain of hell, so I kept silent for thirteen years, hoping to avoid faults, cleanse myself of impurities, escape the dust of the world, and not associate with sin. I have removed worries and burdens, and consider life as a temporary dwelling. One should not choose comfort, as that would lead one further away from the path. I will fly high and far away, saving myself in this world. The world is impermanent, like a fleeting dream; the joy of family is but a brief moment; happiness is temporary, while sorrow and suffering are prolonged.' The king, knowing that the prince's will was firm and resolute, allowed him to pursue the path of learning. Thus, the prince abandoned his kingdom and throne, entered the mountains to seek the Way, and contemplated meditation. When his life ended, he was born in the Tushita Heaven, where he enjoyed the full span of heavenly life. Then, he was born into the world as the prince of Kapilavastu, and ultimately attained Buddhahood.

佛告阿難:「爾時太子墓魄者,我身是也;是時父王者,今閱頭檀是也;是時母者,今摩耶是也;是時侍我五仆者,阿若拘鄰等是也;是時婆羅門欲生埋我者,今調達是也,我與調達,世世有怨。」佛說經訖,諸弟子、諸天龍、鬼神、帝王、人民皆大歡喜,為佛作禮

佛陀告訴阿難:『那時埋葬太子的墓魄,就是我的前身;那時的父王,就是現在的閱頭檀;那時的母親,就是現在的摩耶;那時侍奉我的五個僕人,就是阿若拘鄰等人;那時想要活埋我的婆羅門,就是現在的提婆達多,我和提婆達多,世世代代都有怨仇。』佛陀說完這部經后,所有的弟子、天龍、鬼神、帝王、人民都非常歡喜,向佛陀行禮。

The Buddha told Ananda, 'At that time, the tomb spirit of the prince was my former self; the king at that time is now Suddhodana; the mother at that time is now Maya; the five servants who served me at that time are now Ajñāta Kauṇḍinya and others; the Brahmin who wanted to bury me alive at that time is now Devadatta. I and Devadatta have had enmity for many lifetimes.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all the disciples, gods, dragons, ghosts, spirits, emperors, and people were greatly delighted and paid homage to the Buddha.
