English version: Thus have I heard: At one time, the Buddha was in the Jeta Grove of Sravasti, in Anathapindika's Park. He was with countless monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, sitting in the center of the fourfold assembly. At that moment, the Buddha smiled, and five-colored light emanated from his mouth. Ananda rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, clasped his hands, and knelt, saying to the Buddha, 'I have served the Buddha for over twenty years, and I have never seen the Buddha smile like this before. Is the Buddha now thinking of the Buddhas of the past, future, or present? Or is there another reason? I wish to hear about it.' The Buddha told Ananda, 'I am not thinking of the Buddhas of the past, future, or present. I am merely recalling the time in the countless asamkhya kalpas of the past when I practiced the perfection of giving (dana paramita).' Ananda asked the Buddha, 'What is the practice of the perfection of giving?' The Buddha said, 'In the immeasurable kalpas of the past, there was a great kingdom called Yebha, and its king was named Sipa. He governed the country with righteousness and did not wrong the people. The king had four thousand ministers and ruled sixty small kingdoms and eight hundred villages. He had five hundred great white elephants. The king had twenty thousand consorts, but no son. The king personally prayed to the gods and mountains, and the queen felt that she was pregnant. The king personally provided for the queen's bed, food, and drink, making them all soft and comfortable. When the ten months were complete, a prince was born. The twenty thousand consorts in the palace, upon hearing of the prince's birth, were all joyful and elated, and milk naturally flowed from their breasts. Therefore, the prince was named Sudana. There were four wet nurses caring for the prince: one to nurse him, one to hold him, one to bathe him, and one to take him out to play. When the prince reached the age of sixteen, he was fully proficient in writing, arithmetic, archery, charioteering, and all forms of ritual and music.'

English version: The crown prince served his parents as if they were heavenly deities, and the king built a separate palace for the crown prince. English version: 'Since childhood, the crown prince had always loved giving alms, wishing that all people in the world, as well as birds and beasts, could always receive blessings. Foolish people are stingy and greedy, unwilling to give alms. They are foolishly deluded, deceiving themselves, which is of no benefit to them. Wise people living in the world know that giving alms is a virtue. Those who give alms are praised by all Buddhas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Arhats of the past, future, and present.' English version: 'As the crown prince grew older, the king arranged for him to marry a princess. The princess's name was Mandi, and she was the daughter of a king. She was incomparably beautiful, adorned with exquisite lapis lazuli, gold, silver, and various jeweled ornaments. The crown prince had a son and a daughter. The crown prince thought to himself: 'I want to practice the perfection of giving.' The crown prince said to the king: 'I wish to go out and sightsee.' The king agreed. The crown prince then left the city. The heavenly king Sakra transformed into poor, deaf, blind, and mute people, all by the roadside. When the crown prince saw them, he turned his carriage around and returned to the palace, feeling very worried and unhappy. The king asked the crown prince: 'Having gone out and returned, why are you unhappy?' The crown prince replied: 'When I went out just now, I saw those poor, deaf, blind, and mute people, which is why I am worried. I wish to ask the king for a favor, I wonder if the king will agree?' The king replied to the crown prince: 'Whatever favor you wish, just ask. I will not go against your wishes.' The crown prince said: 'I wish to have all the treasures in the king's treasury placed outside the four city gates and in the marketplace, to be used for giving alms, and I will not refuse anyone's requests.' The king said to the crown prince: 'As you wish, I will not go against you.' The crown prince then had his attendants carry the treasures and place them outside the four city gates and in the marketplace, to be used for giving alms, fulfilling everyone's wishes without refusal. There was no one in all directions who did not know of the crown prince's merits. People came from hundreds of miles away, thousands of miles away, and even tens of thousands of miles away. Those who wanted food were given food, those who wanted clothes were given clothes, and those who wanted gold, silver, and jewels were given them as they wished, and no one's wishes were refused.'

『Sometimes, enemy countries or those with grudges, hearing that the crown prince was fond of giving alms and never refused anyone's requests, would gather ministers and many Taoist priests to discuss, saying: 『King Yebo has a white elephant that walks on lotuses, named Sudana, which is powerful and good at fighting. Whenever he fights with other countries, this elephant always wins. Who can go and beg for this elephant?』 The ministers all said: 『No one can get it.』 Among them, eight Taoist priests said to the king: 『We can go and beg for it. Please give us some funds.』 The king then gave them funds. The king also said: 『If you can get this elephant, I will reward you handsomely.』 The eight Taoist priests then set off with their staffs, traveling long distances, crossing mountains and rivers, and arrived at the country of Yebo. When they reached the gate of the crown prince's palace, they all leaned on their staffs, raised one leg, and stood facing the palace gate. At this time, the gatekeeper went in to report to the crown prince: 『There are Taoist priests outside, all leaning on their staffs, standing with one leg raised. They claim: 「We have come from afar, wanting to beg for something.」』 The crown prince was very happy to hear this, so he went out to greet them, bowed to them as a son would to his father, and then asked them: 『Where did you come from? Was the journey difficult? What do you want to beg for? Why are you raising one leg?』 The eight Taoist priests said: 『We have heard that the crown prince is fond of giving alms and never refuses anyone's requests. The crown prince's name has spread in all directions, reaching the heavens above and the underworld below. The merit of his almsgiving is immeasurable. People far and near are singing his praises, and no one is unaware of it. People say that the crown prince is truthful, not false. Now the crown prince is the son of heaven, and what the heavenly beings say will never deceive people. Now, if the crown prince can truly give alms and not refuse anyone's requests, we want to beg from the crown prince that white elephant that walks on lotuses.』 The crown prince then led them to the elephant stable and told them to take an elephant. The eight Taoist priests said: 『We specifically want that white elephant that walks on lotuses, named Sudana.』 The crown prince said: 『This great white elephant is cherished by my father, the king, who regards this white elephant as he regards me. I cannot give it to you. If I give it to you, I will lose my father's favor, and perhaps I will be driven out of the country because of this elephant.』

English version: The prince then thought to himself: 'I had a previous vow that in all my giving, I would not go against anyone's wishes. If I don't give it now, I will be going against my original intention. If I don't use this elephant for giving, how can I attain the supreme and equal intention of deliverance? I should listen to them and fulfill my supreme and equal intention of deliverance.' The prince said: 'Yes! Very good! I am willing to give you the elephant.' He then ordered his attendants to quickly bring the elephant out, saddled with gold. The prince held a water vessel in his left hand to wash the Taoists' hands, and with his right hand, he led the elephant and gave it to them. The eight Taoists, having received the elephant, offered blessings to the prince. After the blessings, they happily rode away on the white elephant. The prince said to the Taoists: 'You should leave quickly. If the king finds out, he will chase after you and take the elephant back.' At that time, the eight Taoists left immediately. The ministers of the kingdom, upon hearing that the prince had given the white elephant to their enemies, were greatly alarmed. They fell from their beds, worried and unhappy, thinking: 'The kingdom relies solely on this elephant to defend against enemy nations.' The ministers all went to report to the king: 'The prince has given the kingdom's precious elephant, used to defend against enemies, to the enemies.' The king was shocked upon hearing this. The ministers further reported to the king: 'The reason Your Majesty has the kingdom now is because of this elephant. This elephant's strength surpasses that of sixty elephants, yet the prince has given it to the enemies. We fear we will lose the kingdom because of this. What should we do? The prince is giving away things so freely, and the treasury is emptying daily. Your ministers fear that the entire kingdom, including Your Majesty's wives and children, will be given away.' Upon hearing these words, the king became even more displeased. The king called a minister and asked him: 'Did the prince truly give the white elephant to the enemies?' The minister replied to the king: 'He indeed gave it.' Upon hearing the minister's words, the king was even more shocked and fell from his bed, losing consciousness. He was splashed with cold water, and after a long time, he regained consciousness. The twenty thousand consorts were also very unhappy. The king and his ministers discussed together, saying: 'What should we do with the prince?' One of the ministers said: 'Whoever steps into the elephant stable with their foot, their foot should be cut off; whoever leads the elephant with their hand, their hand should be cut off; whoever looks at the elephant with their eyes, their eyes should be gouged out.' Someone else said: 'His head should be cut off.'

English version: The ministers discussed together, each saying the same thing. The king, hearing these words, was greatly distressed and said to the ministers, 'My son is very fond of practicing generosity and giving, how can I forbid and imprison him?' Among them, there was one minister who thought the other ministers' suggestions were inappropriate. The king had only this one son, whom he loved very much. How could he want to inflict punishment on him and have such thoughts? The minister said to the king, 'I dare not ask the king to forbid and imprison the prince, but rather to expel him from the country and place him in the wilderness mountains for about twelve years, which should make him feel ashamed.' The king then followed the words of this minister and immediately sent a messenger to summon the prince, asking, 'Did you give the white elephant to the enemy?' The prince replied to the king, 'Indeed, I gave it to him.' The king asked the prince, 'Why did you give my white elephant to the enemy without telling me?' The prince replied, 'Previously, there was an agreement with the king that all giving should not go against the wishes of others, so I did not tell you.' The king said, 'The previous agreement referred to treasures. What does the white elephant have to do with this?' The prince replied, 'These are all the king's possessions, how can they not be included?' The king said to the prince, 'Quickly leave the country and place yourself in the Dandaka mountains for twelve years.' The prince said to the king, 'I dare not disobey the king's orders, I wish to be allowed to give for seven more days to express my humble intentions, and then I will leave the country.' The king said, 'It is precisely because you give too excessively, depleting the wealth of our country and losing my treasure to resist the enemy, that I am expelling you. You cannot stay and give for seven more days, leave quickly, I will not listen to you.' The prince said to the king, 'I dare not disobey the king's orders. Now I have my own private property, I wish to give it away, and after it is used up, I will leave. I dare not trouble the national treasury again.' Twenty thousand consorts went together to the king, requesting to let the prince stay for seven days to give before leaving the country. The king then agreed. The prince then had his attendants widely announce to all directions that anyone who wanted to obtain wealth should come to the palace gate and could freely obtain what they desired. People's wealth cannot be kept forever, it will eventually be destroyed and scattered.

English version: People from all directions came to the gate, and the prince prepared food for them, and freely gave away treasures, allowing them to leave. After seven days, the wealth was exhausted, the poor became rich, and all the people were joyful. The prince said to his wife, 'Get up quickly, and listen to me. The king is now banishing me to Mount Dandaka for twelve years.' The princess, hearing the prince's words, rose up in surprise and asked the prince, 'What fault have I committed that the king should treat me this way?' The prince replied, 'Because I have given too much in charity, emptying the national treasury, and also gave the strong white elephant to our enemy. The king and his ministers are therefore angry and have joined together to banish me.' Mandi said, 'May the country be prosperous, and may the king, ministers, officials, and people, both great and small, be infinitely wealthy and happy. We only need to diligently seek the Way in the mountains.' The prince said, 'In the terrifying places of the mountains, it is difficult to have peace of mind. Tigers and wolves are very frightening. You are used to being pampered, how can you endure this? In the palace, you wear soft clothes, sleep in beds with curtains, and eat delicious food, whatever you desire. Now in the mountains, you will sleep on grass mats and eat fruits. How can you adapt? Moreover, there will be much wind, rain, thunder, lightning, fog, and dew, which will make one's hair stand on end. When it is cold, it will be very cold, and when it is hot, it will be very hot. You cannot rely on the trees, and the ground is covered with thorns, gravel, and poisonous insects. How can you endure this?' Mandi said, 'How can I separate from the prince because of these soft curtains and delicious food? I can never be separated from you. I will surely follow the prince. A king is marked by a banner, fire is marked by smoke, and a woman is marked by her husband. I only rely on the prince. The prince is my heaven. When the prince was in the country, he gave to people from all directions, and I often did it with the prince. Now that the prince is going far away, if someone comes to beg, how should I respond? When I hear that someone is coming to seek the prince, I would rather die, what is there to doubt?' The prince said, 'I like to give and do not go against people's wishes. If someone asks me for my sons and daughters, I cannot refuse them.'

English version: 'If you do not obey my words, you will disturb my good intentions, it is better not to go.' Mandi said, 'I will follow the prince's arrangements, and I will not slacken no matter what the prince gives away. There is no one in the world who gives like the prince.' The prince said, 'If you can do this, it would be very good.' English version: The prince, along with his consort and two children, went to his mother to bid farewell, wanting to leave, and told his mother, 'I hope you will repeatedly advise the king to govern the country with righteous laws and not treat the people wickedly.' The mother, hearing the prince's farewell like this, immediately felt sorrow. She said to the people around her, 'My body is like stone, and my heart is like steel. I have never made a mistake in serving the king. Now, I only have this one son, and he is going to leave me. How can my heart not break and die? When my son was in my womb, he grew day and night like the leaves of a tree. I raised my son, and he has just grown up, but he is going to leave me. Those concubines will all be happy, and my king will no longer respect me. If heaven does not go against my wishes, may my son return to the country quickly.' The prince, his consort, and their two children bowed to their parents, and then they left. English version: Twenty thousand consorts each offered a string of pearls to the prince, and four thousand ministers offered seven-jeweled flowers to the prince. The prince went out of the city gate from the north of the central palace, and gave all the seven-jeweled pearls and flowers to the people in all directions, and they were all given away immediately. Officials and common people, tens of millions of them, all went to see the prince off, and they all privately discussed, 'The prince is a good person, he is the guardian of the country. How can the parents drive away such a precious son?' The onlookers all felt sorry for him. The prince sat under a tree outside the city, bid farewell to those who came to see him off, and told them that they could return from here. The officials and common people all returned with tears in their eyes. English version: The prince, his consort, and their two children left together in a chariot driven by himself. After traveling some distance, they rested under a tree. A Brahmin came to beg for a horse, and the prince immediately unhitched the chariot and gave the horse to him. He put the two children on the chariot, and the consort pushed the chariot from behind, while he walked into the shafts and pulled the chariot. After going forward again, they met another Brahmin who came to beg for the chariot. The prince immediately gave him the chariot. After going forward again, they met another Brahmin who came to beg for

English version: The prince said, 'I will not be stingy with you in any way; all my possessions are exhausted.' The Brahmin said, 'If you have no possessions, give me the clothes on your body.' The prince immediately took off his precious clothes and gave them to him, putting on an old garment himself. Just as he continued forward, he encountered another Brahmin coming to beg. The prince gave him his consort's clothes. Continuing forward, he encountered yet another Brahmin coming to beg. The prince gave him the clothes of his two children. The prince had given away all his carriages, horses, money, clothes, and bedding, without a single trace of regret in his heart. The prince carried his son on his back, and his consort carried their daughter, and they walked away. The prince, his consort, and their two children, with joyful expressions, went together into the mountains. Mount Dandaka was more than six thousand li away from the kingdom of Yebha. As they got further from the kingdom, they walked through a vast swamp, suffering greatly from hunger and thirst. The king of the Trayastrimsa Heaven, Sakra, transformed the swamp into a city with walls, markets, streets, music, clothes, and food. People from the city came out to greet the prince, saying that he could stay there to rest, eat, and enjoy himself. The consort said to the prince, 'The journey has been very tiring, can we rest here for a while?' The prince said, 'My father exiled me to Mount Dandaka, and if I stay here, I would be disobeying my father's command, and I would not be a filial son.' So he left the city, and when he looked back, the city had suddenly disappeared. He continued forward and arrived at Mount Dandaka. At the foot of the mountain was a large river, too deep to cross. The consort said to the prince, 'Let's stay here for now and cross the river when the water recedes.' The prince said, 'My father exiled me to Mount Dandaka, and if I stay here, I would be disobeying my father's teachings, and I would not be a filial son.' The prince immediately entered the Samadhi of Loving-kindness, and a large mountain appeared in the water, damming it. The prince and his consort then lifted their skirts and crossed the river. After crossing, the prince thought, 'If I leave like this, the water will flood and kill many people and small creatures.' The prince then turned back and said to the water, 'Return to your original state. If there are people who wish to come to me, let them all be able to cross the river.' As soon as the prince finished speaking, the water returned to its original state.

'Upon reaching Mount Dandaka, the prince saw the mountain towering and precipitous, with lush trees, birds singing mournfully, clear springs and sweet fruits, and many kinds of birds such as ducks, geese, wrens, kingfishers, and mandarin ducks. The prince said to his consort, 'Look at the trees in this mountain, reaching the sky without any damage, drinking this sweet spring water, and eating these sweet fruits, there must be people practicing the Way in this mountain.' The prince entered the mountain, and the birds and beasts in the mountain were all very happy and came to greet the prince. 'On the mountain, there was a Taoist named Ajita, who was five hundred years old and had excellent virtue. The prince bowed and stopped to say, 'Now that I am in the mountain, are there any good sweet fruits and springs where I can stay?' Ajita said, 'This mountain is a blessed land everywhere, and you can stay anywhere.' The Taoist then said, 'Now this mountain is a pure place, why did you bring your wife here to seek the Way?' The prince did not answer, and Mandi asked the Taoist, 'How many years have you been practicing the Way here?' The Taoist replied, 'I have lived in this mountain for four or five hundred years.' Mandi said, 'If one is attached to the concepts of 'self' and 'others', when will one attain the Way? Even if one stays in the mountain for a long time, it is no different from the trees. Only by not being attached to the concepts of 'self' and 'others' can one attain the Way.' The Taoist said, 'I really do not know about this matter.' 'The prince then asked the Taoist, 'Have you heard of Prince Sudana of King Yebha?' The Taoist said, 'I have heard of him many times, but I have never seen him.' The prince said, 'I am Prince Sudana.' The Taoist asked the prince, 'What do you seek?' The prince replied, 'I want to seek the Mahayana Way.' The Taoist said, 'The prince's merits are so great, and it will not be long before you attain the Mahayana Way. When the prince attains the Supreme True Way, I will become your first disciple with divine powers.' The Taoist then pointed out a place where the prince could stay, and the prince followed the Taoist's example, tying his hair into braids, and using spring water and fruits as food.

So they gathered firewood to build small huts, making one each for Mandi and the two children, a total of three huts. The boy, named Yeli, was seven years old and wore grass clothing, following his father in and out. The girl, named Jina Yan, was six years old and wore deerskin clothing, following her mother in and out. The birds and beasts in the mountains were all very happy to be near the prince. The prince had only stayed one night when the dry ponds in the mountains all began to spring forth water, the withered trees and plants grew flowers and leaves, all the poisonous insects and beasts disappeared, those that ate each other began to eat grass, all kinds of fruit trees grew naturally and lushly, and hundreds of birds sang together in harmonious and sorrowful tones. Mandi was mainly responsible for gathering fruit to feed the prince and his children. The two children also often left their parents to play with the birds and beasts by the water, sometimes even spending the night there. Sometimes the boy Yeli would ride on the back of a lion to play, and when the lion jumped, Yeli would fall to the ground, injuring his face and causing it to bleed. A monkey would then pick leaves to wipe the blood from his face, and then take him to the water to wash it. The prince, sitting there, also saw this from afar and said: 『Even beasts have such a heart.』 At that time, in the country of Jiuliu, there was a poor Brahmin who was forty years old when he married a wife, and his wife was very beautiful. The Brahmin had twelve ugly features: his body was as black as lacquer, his face had three depressions, his nose was flat and collapsed, his eyes were blue, his face was wrinkled, his lips were everted, he stuttered when he spoke, he had a large belly, his legs were crooked, and his head was bald, making him look like a ghost. His wife hated him very much and cursed him, wishing for him to die. When the wife went to fetch water, she met some young people who mocked her husband's ugliness and teased her, saying: 『You are so beautiful, how could you marry such a person?』 The wife told the young people: 『This old man's hair is as white as frost on a tree, I wish he would die sooner or later, but why won't he die!』 The wife then took the water, crying, and went home to tell her husband: 『I just went to fetch water, and those young people all mocked me, you should find some servants for me. If I have servants, I won't have to fetch water myself, and people won't laugh at me anymore.』

English version: The husband said, 『I am extremely poor, where can I get servants?』 The wife said, 『If you don't find servants for me, I will leave you and not live with you anymore.』 The wife also said, 『I often hear that Prince Sudāna was exiled to Mount Dandaka by his father because he gave away too much in charity. He has a son and a daughter, you can go and beg from him.』 The husband said, 『Mount Dandaka is more than six thousand miles from here, and I have never traveled mountain roads, how can I go and seek them?』 The wife said, 『If you don't get servants for me, I will kill myself.』 The husband said, 『I would rather sacrifice my own life than let you die.』 The husband said, 『If you want me to go, you should prepare some provisions for the journey.』 The wife said, 『Go, I have no provisions.』 The Brahmin prepared his own provisions and set off. Then, the Brahmin went directly to the kingdom of Yebbo, arrived at the gate of the royal palace, and asked the gatekeeper, 『Where is Prince Sudāna now?』 The gatekeeper immediately went in to report to the king, 『There is a Brahmin outside asking about the prince.』 When the king heard that someone was asking about the prince, he felt both sad and angry, saying, 『It is because of these people that my prince was exiled. Is this person coming again?』 The king then made an analogy, saying, 『It's like a fire that is already burning fiercely, and then more firewood is added to it. My sorrow is like a fire burning, and someone asking about the prince is like adding firewood to the fire.』 The Brahmin said, 『I have come from afar, having heard of the prince's reputation, reaching from the heavens above to the underworld below. The prince never goes against anyone's wishes when giving charity, so I have come from afar to seek something.』 The king said, 『The prince lives alone in the deep mountains, very poor, what can he give you?』 The Brahmin said, 『Although the prince has nothing, I just want to see him.』 The king then sent someone to show him the way. The Brahmin then went to Mount Dandaka, reached the bank of a large river, and thinking of the prince, he crossed the river smoothly.

English version: Then, the Brahmin went into the mountains and encountered a hunter. He asked, 'Have you seen Prince Sudāna in the mountains?' The hunter, who knew that the prince had moved to the mountains because he had given alms to Brahmins, tied the Brahmin to a tree and beat him with a stick until his body was broken. He cursed, 'I want to shoot your belly and eat your flesh, and you dare to ask about the prince?' The Brahmin thought, 'Am I going to be killed today? I should tell a lie.' So he said, 'Shouldn't you be asking me?' The hunter asked, 'What do you want to say?' The Brahmin said, 'The king misses the prince, so he sent me to chase after him and bring him back to the country.' The hunter immediately untied him and apologized, 'I really didn't know.' Then he pointed out where the prince was. The Brahmin then went to the prince. The prince saw the Brahmin coming from afar and was very happy to greet him, bowing to him and asking, 'Where do you come from? Are you tired from your journey? What do you seek?' The Brahmin said, 'I come from afar, my whole body is in pain, and I am very hungry and thirsty.' The prince invited the Brahmin to sit down and placed fruit and water in front of him. After the Brahmin drank the water and ate the fruit, he said to the prince, 'I am from the country of Kuru, and I have long heard that the prince is fond of giving alms, and his fame has spread in all directions. I am very poor and want to beg something from the prince.' The prince said, 'I have nothing that I am unwilling to give you. I will give you everything I have, there is nothing I will not give you.' The Brahmin said, 'If you have nothing, give me your two children to be servants, so they can take care of me in my old age.' He said this three times. The prince said, 'You have come from afar, wanting my children, how can I not give them to you?' At that time, the two children were playing. The prince called to the two children and said, 'The Brahmin has come from afar to beg for you, and I have already agreed. You should go with him.' The two children ran into their father's arms, crying and saying, 'We have seen many Brahmins, but we have never seen one like this. This is definitely not a Brahmin, it must be a ghost!'

English version: Now my mother has gone to pick fruit and has not yet returned, but my father is going to give me to a ghost as food, I am definitely going to die. If my mother comes back and cannot find me, she will be like a cow looking for her calf, she will surely cry and weep, and be full of sorrow and grief.』 The prince said, 『I have already promised him, how can I stop it? He is just a Brahmin, not a ghost, he will not eat you in the end. You should go quickly.』 The Brahmin said, 『I am about to leave, but I am afraid that if your mother comes, I will not be able to leave. You are helping me with good intentions, but your mother will ruin your good intentions when she comes.』 The prince replied, 『Since I was born, I have never regretted giving alms.』 The prince then washed the Brahmin's hands with water, took the two children and handed them to him, and the earth shook. The two children refused to go with him, and returned to their father and knelt down, saying to their father, 『What sins did we commit in our past lives that we are now suffering such hardships, and that we, the descendants of a king, are to become slaves to others? We repent to our father, hoping that from this cause, our sins will be eliminated, our blessings will increase, and we will never encounter such things again in all our lives.』 The prince said to the children, 『All love and affection in the world must be separated, everything is impermanent, how can it be kept forever? When I attain the supreme and equal path, I will naturally liberate you.』 The two children said to their father, 『Please say goodbye to our mother for us, we are now going to be separated forever, and we will never see each other again. It is because of our past sins that we are suffering such hardships; please tell our mother not to be sad and sorrowful because of losing us.』 The Brahmin said, 『I am old and weak, the children might abandon me and run to their mother, how can I catch them? They should be tied up and given to me.』 The prince then took the hands of the two children, and let the Brahmin tie them up himself, connecting them with a rope, and holding the end of the rope. The two children refused to go with him, so he whipped them, and blood flowed to the ground. When the prince saw this, tears fell to the ground, and the earth boiled. The prince and all the birds and beasts sent the two children off, and only returned when they could no longer see them. All the birds and beasts followed the prince, returned to the place where the children played, and cried and wailed, falling to the ground. The Brahmin took the two children directly away. On the way, the children wrapped the rope around a tree, refusing to go with him, hoping that their mother would come. The Brahmin then whipped them.

The two children said, 'Don't hit us anymore, we'll go by ourselves.' They looked up to the sky and cried out, 'Mountain gods and tree gods, please have mercy on us. We are now going far away to be slaves for others, and we cannot say goodbye to our mother. Please tell my mother to put down the fruit she is holding and come quickly to see us.' The mother was in the mountains, her left sole itched, her right eyelid twitched, and milk flowed from both breasts. The mother then thought to herself, 'There has never been such a strange thing. What should I do with this fruit? I should go back and see my children, lest something has happened to them.' So she dropped the fruit and went home. At this time, the second King of the Trayastrimsa Heaven, Sakra, knew that the prince had given the children away. Fearing that the princess would ruin his good intentions, he transformed into a lion and squatted in the middle of the road. The princess said to the lion, 'You are the king of beasts, and I am also a prince among men. We are both in the mountains, I hope you can move aside a little and let me pass. I have two children who are still very young, and they haven't eaten anything since morning, they are waiting for me to go back.' The lion knew that the Brahmin had gone far away, so he got up and moved out of the way, allowing the princess to pass. The princess returned home and saw the prince sitting alone, but the two children were nowhere to be seen. She searched for them in the grass hut, but didn't find them. She searched in the children's room, but didn't find them. She searched at the place where the children usually played in the water, but still didn't find them. She only saw the birds, beasts, deer, lions, and monkeys that played with the children, all prostrating themselves and crying in front of Mandi, and the pool where they played was also dry. Mandi then returned to the prince and asked him, 'Where are the two children?' The prince did not answer. Mandi said again, 'The children saw me coming from afar with the fruit, and they ran towards me, fell down and got up again, jumping and shouting, "Mother is back, come see us." When they were sitting, they were always by my side, and if they saw dust on me, they would brush it off for me. Now the children are gone, and they don't come to me. Who did you give them to? Now that I can't see them, my heart is broken. Tell me where they are quickly, don't make me go crazy.' She asked three times like this, but the prince did not answer. Mandi became even more distressed and said, 'It would be bearable if I couldn't see the two children, but the prince doesn't answer, which makes me even more confused and panicked.'

'The prince said: 'A Brahmin from the Kuru country came and begged me for two children, so I gave them to him.' Upon hearing the prince's words, the princess collapsed to the ground like a collapsing mountain, weeping and wailing uncontrollably. The prince said: 'Stop crying for now. Do you remember the agreement we made in the past during the time of Buddha Tihokara? At that time, I was the son of a Brahmin named Bhedawei. You were the daughter of a Brahmin named Sudara. You held seven flowers, and I held five hundred silver coins. I bought flowers from you to offer to the Buddha. You entrusted two flowers to me to offer to the Buddha and made a vow, saying, 'May I always be your wife in future lives, never to be separated, whether beautiful or ugly.' At that time, I made an agreement with you, saying, 'If you want to be my wife, you must follow my will. In matters of giving, do not go against others' wishes, except for giving away your parents' possessions. For all other giving, you must follow my will.' You agreed to me at that time. Now, because I am giving away our children, are you disrupting my good intentions?' Upon hearing the prince's words, the princess's mind opened up, and she remembered her past life. She obeyed the prince's giving, and soon she obtained what she desired. King Sakra, seeing the prince's generosity, descended to test him, wanting to know what he desired. He transformed into a Brahmin with twelve ugly features and came before the prince, saying, 'I have often heard that the prince enjoys giving and never refuses requests. Therefore, I have come here, hoping to beg for your princess.' The prince said, 'Very well! The princess is yours.' The princess said, 'Now that I am given to another, who will provide for the prince?' The prince said, 'If I do not give you away, how can I achieve the supreme state of equanimity?' The prince washed the Brahmin's hands with water and gave him the princess. Sakra knew that the prince had no regrets. All the gods praised him, and the heavens and earth shook. At that time, the Brahmin took the princess away. After walking seven steps, he returned the princess to the prince, saying, 'Do not give her to anyone else.' The prince said, 'Why not accept her? Is there something wrong with her? Among all the wives, this wife is the best. She is now the prince of the country, and her father has only this one daughter.'

'It's because of this woman that I threw myself into boiling water and flames, eating rough and bad food without avoiding it, working diligently, and having a dignified appearance. Now that you're taking her away, I'm actually happy.' The Brahmin said to the prince, 'I am not a Brahmin, but the Heavenly King Shakra, who came to test you. What do you wish for?' He then resumed his form as Shakra, with a dignified and extraordinary appearance. The princess immediately bowed and asked for three wishes: 'First, let the Brahmin take my two children back to our kingdom to sell them. Second, let my two children not suffer from hunger and thirst. Third, let the prince and I return to our country soon.' Heavenly King Shakra said, 'It shall be as you wish.' The prince said, 'I wish that all beings may be liberated and no longer suffer from the pain of birth, old age, sickness, and death.' Heavenly King Shakra said, 'Your wish is too great, supremely noble. If you wish to ascend to heaven to be the king of the sun and moon, to be an emperor in the world, to extend your life, I can grant you that, but the supreme honor of the three realms is beyond my reach.' The prince said, 'For now, I only wish to become very wealthy, to give alms more often and better than before; I wish that my father and all the ministers would miss me.' Heavenly King Shakra said, 'It shall be as you wish.' In an instant, he disappeared. The Brahmin of the Kuru Kingdom returned home with the child, and his wife scolded him, 'How dare you bring this child back? This child is of royal lineage, and you have no compassion, beating him until his body is covered in sores, pus, and blood. Quickly take him away to sell him, and find someone else to use.' The husband followed his wife's words and went to sell the child. Heavenly King Shakra secretly disrupted the market, saying, 'This child is too expensive, no one can afford him.' The child was feeling hungry and thirsty, so the deity used natural energy to make the child feel full. Heavenly King Shakra then changed their minds, and they arrived in the kingdom of Yebbo. The ministers and people of the kingdom recognized that this was the prince's child, the king's grandson, and the whole country was filled with sorrow. The ministers asked, 'Where did you get this child?' The Brahmin said, 'I begged for him myself, why do you ask me?' The ministers said, 'Since you have come to our country, we should ask you.'

English version The ministers and people then wanted to seize the Brahmin's children, but one elder advised them, saying, 'This is due to the Prince's charitable heart, and now to seize them would be contrary to the Prince's original intention. It would be better to inform the King. If the King knows, he will naturally redeem them.' So they stopped their attempt to seize the children. The ministers reported to the King, saying, 'Your Majesty, your two grandchildren are now being sold by a Brahmin.' The King was greatly shocked and immediately summoned the Brahmin, ordering him to bring the children into the palace. The King, the Queen, the ministers, and the concubines of the harem, upon seeing the two children from afar, were all choked with sobs. The King asked the Brahmin, 'How did you obtain these children?' The Brahmin replied, 'I begged them from the Prince.' The King called to the two children, wanting to embrace them, but the children wept and refused to be held. The King asked the Brahmin, 'How much do you want for selling the children?' Before the Brahmin could answer, the boy said, 'The boy is worth one thousand silver coins and one hundred specially selected cattle; the girl is worth two thousand gold coins and two hundred cows.' The King said, 'Boys are valued by people, why is the boy cheaper and the girl more expensive?' The boy said, 'The concubines in the harem have no kinship with you, some are of humble origin, some are just maids, but if you favor them, they gain noble status, wear precious jewels, and enjoy all kinds of delicacies. You have only one son, yet you banished him to the deep mountains, and you spend your days enjoying yourself with the concubines in the palace, with no thought of your son. Therefore, it is clear that boys are cheap and girls are expensive.' Upon hearing these words, the King was moved with grief and his tears flowed, saying, 'I have wronged you. Why won't you let me hold you? Do you resent me? Or are you afraid of the Brahmin?' The boy said, 'We dare not resent Your Majesty, nor are we afraid of the Brahmin. We were once Your Majesty's grandchildren, but now we are slaves. How can slaves dare to be held by the King? That is why we dare not.' Upon hearing the child's words, the King was even more grieved and immediately paid the Brahmin the price they had stated. He then called to the two children to embrace them, and the two children then nestled close to him.

The king held his two grandsons, caressing their bodies, and asked the two children, 'Your father is in the mountains, what does he eat and drink? What clothes does he wear?' The two children replied, 'He eats fruits and vegetables, and wears coarse cloth. He plays with all kinds of birds and has no worries.' The king then sent the Brahmin away. The boy said to the king, 'This Brahmin is very hungry and thirsty, I hope you can give him some food.' The king said, 'Aren't you resentful of him? Why do you still ask for food for him?' The child said, 'My father likes to cultivate the Tao, and he has no extra wealth to give alms. Giving alms with what I beg for is my family's almsgiving. I have not yet been able to do things for him to fulfill my father's Taoist intentions. How can I bear to see him hungry and thirsty without compassion? My father even gave his son to the Brahmin, does the king begrudge a meal?' The king then gave the Brahmin food. After the Brahmin finished eating, he happily left. The king sent a messenger to quickly welcome the prince back. The messenger accepted the order to welcome the prince, but was blocked by water and could not cross, but thinking of the prince, he was able to cross. He told the prince with the king's order, 'You should quickly return to the country. The king wants to see the prince.' The prince replied, 'The king placed me in the mountains, with a twelve-year term. There is still one year left, and when the time is up, I will naturally return.' The messenger returned and told the king the situation. The king wrote another personal letter to the prince, 'You are a wise person, you should be patient when you leave, and you should be patient when you return. Why are you angry and not returning? We need you to eat.' The messenger went again with the letter. After the prince received the letter, he bowed his head to the ground, then walked around the letter seven times before opening it to read. When the various birds and beasts in the mountains heard that the prince was going back, they all jumped and rolled, hitting each other and howling. The spring water dried up because of this, and the beasts did not nurse because they lost the prince. All the birds were crying because they lost the prince. The prince then put on his clothes and returned with his concubine. The enemies of the opposing country heard that the prince was coming back, so they sent a messenger, with a decorated white elephant and gold and silver saddles, with gold bowls filled with silver rice, and silver bowls filled with gold rice, to welcome the prince on the road.

English version: The one who apologized and repented said: 'Before, I asked for the white elephant because of my foolishness. Because of me, the prince was exiled far away. Now that I hear he is returning, I am very happy in my heart. Now I return the white elephant to the prince, and offer gold, silver, and grains, hoping you will accept them to remove my guilt.' The prince replied: 'It's like someone preparing a hundred delicacies, especially for someone, and that person eats them and then vomits them on the ground. Can those foods still be clean and edible? What I have given away is like something vomited out, I will never take it back. Quickly ride the elephant back and thank your king. It was hard on the messenger, coming from so far to inquire.' So the messenger rode the elephant back and told the king what had happened. Because of this elephant, the enemy country was transformed into compassion and kindness. The king and the people all developed the intention of supreme equality. The father king rode an elephant to greet the prince, and the prince immediately went forward to bow to his father, then followed his father back to the palace. The people in the country were all happy, scattering flowers, burning incense, hanging ribbons and banners, and sprinkling fragrant water on the ground to welcome the prince. After the prince entered the palace, he immediately went to his mother, bowed to her, and asked about her well-being. The king gave the treasures to the prince, allowing him to give them away as he pleased, and the scale of his giving was even greater than before. He gave without ceasing, and eventually attained Buddhahood.' The Buddha told Ananda: 'My acts of giving in my past life were like this. The prince Sudana at that time was me; the father king at that time is my current father, Suddhodana; the mother at that time is the current Maya; the consort at that time is the current Gopa. The mountain ascetic Ajita at that time was Mahamogallana; the heavenly king Sakra at that time was Sariputra; the hunter at that time was Ananda; the boy Yali at that time is my current son Rahula; the girl Keshini at that time is the current nun Mallika's mother. The beggar Brahmin at that time was the current Devadatta; the Brahmin's wife was Chinchamanavika. I endured countless kalpas of hardship, and also did countless kalpas of good deeds. You should preach this sutra to all the monks, the Bodhisattva practices the perfection of giving, giving should be like this.'
