English version The Sutra of the Bodhisattva Offering His Body to Feed a Starving Tiger and Building a Stupa
The Sutra Spoken by the Buddha on the Bodhisattva Offering His Body to Feed a Starving Tiger and Building a Stupa
Translated by the Śramaṇa Dharmasiddhi of the Northern Liang Gaochang Kingdom
Thus have I heard:
At one time, the Buddha was traveling in the great city of Vishamapara in the country of Gandhara. Under the shade of a mountain rock north of the city, he was teaching and converting the king, his ministers, the eight classes of gods and dragons, humans, non-humans, and countless others. As the teaching was about to conclude, the Buddha smiled, and fragrant light emanated from his mouth. The light had nine colors, illuminating all countries; the fragrance was the same. At that time, the assembly saw the light and smelled the fragrance, and they were all greatly delighted. Then, the light circled the Buddha seven times and re-entered his mouth.
At that time, Ananda adjusted his robes, knelt with his palms together, and said to the Buddha, 'Now, the World Honored One is manifesting an auspicious sign, which must have a cause and will greatly benefit sentient beings, allowing them to receive blessings. May the Heavenly Honored One explain the cause of this.'
The Buddha said to Ananda, 'As you have said, the secret actions of all Buddhas, whenever they manifest a sign, have a great cause. Do you wish to hear it?'
Ananda said, 'Yes! May the Heavenly Honored One explain!'
The Buddha said to Ananda, 'In the past, nine kalpas ago, there was no Buddha in the world. There was a great country named Gandhamati, whose king was named Gandhashiri, his queen was named Chhamamukha, and their crown prince was named Chandanamati. The country was vast and prosperous, and the people were happy, with a lifespan of 1,500 years. The crown prince was virtuous, and the world was peaceful. There was no theft or robbery, and the people lived in harmony, without conflict. The crown prince was compassionate, wise, and intelligent, well-versed in all kinds of scriptures and the ninety-six kinds of doctrines and practices, with nothing he did not understand. From a young age, he had always loved to give, and he was not stingy with his life or possessions. He nurtured all beings more than his own children, his great compassion covered all equally without discrimination, he was filial to his parents, and his manners were impeccable.'
'At that time, the father king built a garden palace not far from the city for the crown prince.'
English version:
The garden was vast and expansive, covering eight yojanas, filled with various flowers and fruit trees, and inhabited by rare birds, creating a pure and beautiful environment. Everywhere there were flowing springs and bathing ponds, in which constantly bloomed utpala flowers, padma flowers, kumuda flowers, pundarika flowers, and other various red and white lotuses. Peacocks, geese, herons, and mandarin ducks played among them, creating a cool, fragrant, and exquisitely wonderful scene.
At that time, the prince, along with his ministers, officials, consorts, and palace women, went to the garden for recreation, and after seven days, they returned to the palace.
At that time, there were poor, lonely, old, and sick people in the kingdom. Hearing that the prince had returned, they all came to the roadside, stretching out their hands towards the prince. Upon seeing this, the prince immediately gave away his necklaces, clothing, gold and silver coins, carriages, elephants, and horses as alms. By the time they reached the city gate, there was nothing left, yet there were still many poor people. The prince felt regretful that he could not meet their needs. Upon returning to the palace, the prince thought of the poor people and was so worried that he could not eat.
The king asked the prince, 'Why are you so worried?' The prince replied, 'Recently, I went out for a stroll and saw many poor people begging by the roadside. I gave away all that I had, but it was still not enough to meet their needs, so I am worried. Now I want to ask the king to use the treasury's wealth to help the world. I wonder if the king will grant my request?' The king said, 'The national treasury is for emergencies and should not be used for personal purposes.'
Thus, the prince's wish was not fulfilled, and his worry was even greater than before. A minister by the prince's side named Jeya, seeing that the prince was not eating, felt sad and distressed. He knelt down with his palms together and said to the prince, 'I have ten thousand gold coins, which I offer to the great one, to use as you wish. I hope you will not worry about poverty and eat as before. If the money is not enough, I will sell myself to serve the great one.' Then, Jeya offered ten thousand gold coins to the prince. The prince sent people out of the city to distribute the money to the poor, but even after spending all ten thousand coins, they still could not reach everyone. They returned to report to the prince, 'The gold coins are all gone, and there are still many poor people.'
English version: Thereupon, the crown prince ordered his attendants to search through his private possessions, and they found another ten thousand gold coins, which he used to give to the poor, but it was still not enough. The crown prince thought to himself: 『The suffering of people all comes from poverty and the pain of not getting what they seek. Now I should sell my beloved body to relieve their suffering and bring them peace and happiness.』 Having thought this, he took off his precious clothes, put on ordinary old clothes, and quietly left the palace, going to a country called Pei Ti She; he sold himself to a Brahmin, receiving a thousand gold coins, which he used to give to the poor. At that time, the Brahmin had a slave drive a cart into the mountains to chop firewood to sell in the market; after a long time, he went to collect firewood again, and in the mountains, he found a piece of sandalwood weighing one hundred pounds. At that time, the king of that country had leprosy, and neither medicine nor incantations could cure it. The king became angry and said: 『What is the use of doctors? Other people's diseases have remedies, why is my disease the only one that cannot be cured!』 He ordered all the doctors to be arrested and executed in the market. At that time, one doctor kowtowed to the king and said: 『The cure for Your Majesty's disease is rare in the world. Even if the name exists, no one has ever seen it.』 The king asked: 『What is the name of the medicine?』 He replied: 『It is called sandalwood.』 The king said: 『People's karmic actions of sin and merit are different, and those with good fortune may have this medicine.』 He immediately issued a decree throughout the land that whoever had this medicine would be given half of the kingdom to buy it. At that time, the Brahmin called the slave and said: 『Although you have earned a small amount of money from selling firewood, it is not as profitable as the wealth and honor we can get now. The king is sick, and now he is using half of the kingdom to buy sandalwood. You can take this sandalwood and offer it to the king, and you will surely get what you want, and I will share this joy with you.』 At that time, the slave took the sandalwood and presented it to the king. After the king received it, he ground it into powder and applied it to his body, and his leprosy was immediately cured. The king was overjoyed, and all the officials and people of the country were blessed. He summoned his ministers to hold a grand feast, released prisoners, gave alms to the poor, and everyone was harmonious and happy.
The king sent his ministers to destroy half of the palace, and divided in half all the people, gold, silver, treasures, money, grains, silks, slaves, carriages, elephants, horses, cattle, and sheep under his rule. He also prepared a hundred decorated treasure carriages, a thousand horses, arranged for music and dance, and used fragrant flowers, banners, and various delicacies to welcome the slave back to the country. The king invited him to sit on the throne together, arranged for music and dance, and provided food and entertainment. The king asked the slave, 'Seeing that your virtue and majesty are different from ordinary people, why are you in such a lowly position? I wish to hear your aspirations.' The slave said, 'Very well! Since you wish to hear, I will tell you now. As you suspect, I was not originally a slave. Have you ever heard of King Gandhamati having a prince named Chandanamati who loved to give alms?' The king replied, 'I have heard of him many times, but I have never seen him.' The slave said, 'I am he.' Upon hearing this, the king respected him even more. He said, 'What is the reason for this?' The prince said, 'I love to give alms, and using up all the wealth of the country was not enough, there were still many poor people, and my original wish was not fulfilled, so I abandoned the country and sold myself.' The king said, 'People's past actions bring corresponding rewards, doing good brings happiness, and doing evil brings suffering; this is not what you did, nor what your parents gave, why did you betray the great hope of the country and put yourself in danger? Such a thing is rare in the world, there must be a different view, I hope you will tell me your thoughts.' The prince replied, 'I originally vowed to liberate all living beings, practice all the paramitas, and aspire to achieve Bodhi.' The king said, 'Excellent! I greatly rejoice in your merit.' The prince said to the king, 'Now I return the country to you, I only ask for one wish, I hope you will not refuse.' The king replied, 'What do you wish for?' The prince said, 'I want to obtain the money and wealth in the treasury to help the poor, the widowed, the disabled, and the sick in the world, and to give alms freely for fifty days, and share the merit with you.' The king said, 'Very well! The money and wealth are yours to use, half of the country that was awarded is your merit, I dare not accept it.'
English version: The crown prince said, 'Excellent! You use wealth to give to me, and I will use the kingdom to serve you. I like to give alms, and the people of the kingdom you govern have different surnames and different aspirations.' The king said, 'This practice is profound and deep, beyond my reach. When you attain enlightenment, I hope to receive your salvation.' The crown prince immediately sent messengers to announce to all the kingdoms that if there were any poor, orphaned, or disabled people, they should all come to gather. At that time, the crown prince sent people to open all the storehouses, transport the wealth to a flat area, and give alms to the poor for fifty days. The poor received wealth and were all happy. At that time, after the crown prince abandoned the kingdom and left, the ministers were terrified and wept, reporting to the king, 'Last night the crown prince suddenly disappeared, and we do not know where he is.' When the king heard this, he fell from the bed, confused and unable to recognize anyone. The concubines and palace maids in the queen's palace, as well as the ministers, officials, and common people, were all shocked and bewildered, grieved and distressed, crying out loudly, and running out in all directions to search for the crown prince. At that time, the queen, fearing the loss of the crown prince, became delirious, and together with the concubines, she lifted her skirts, let down her hair, and ran out of the city, running east and west in search of the crown prince. The king, fearing that the queen's grief over her son might lead to her death, together with his ministers, prepared to leave the city, seeking news of the queen and the crown prince. Ten miles from the capital, in the empty marshland, they saw the queen with several palace maids, beating their chests and weeping, their hair disheveled, their eyes swollen, and covered in weeds, searching for the crown prince. When the king saw this, his grief increased; he went forward, took the queen's hand, tears streaming down his face, and advised her, 'My son has blessings, is kind and filial, and likes to give alms. He gives to others without resentment, and even if he gave all his wealth to the world, it would not be enough, and he often regrets not having anything to give. Now that he has secretly left, he must have gone to other countries to seek wealth to give alms, or to sell himself to help the poor. Let us return to the palace together, and not be too worried. I will now send messengers to all the countries to inquire about news, and we will surely get our son back.' The queen scolded, 'It is all because of your stinginess and greed, your love of money, and your lack of love for your son.'
'Now, can money replace my son's body?' The king said, 'My mistake was in the past, what's the use of regretting it now? Let's go back to the palace together first, and ensure we don't lose our son again. Now I should personally search everywhere, and I must find my son.' The queen, with tears streaming down her face, said, 'Now that I've lost my son, what's the point of living? I'd rather die here than go back empty-handed. I see that my son's body doesn't know hunger or thirst, and even if he suffers from illness, he doesn't mind it. Now, going back to an empty house, what can I rely on?' Then the crown prince's consorts let their hair down, disheveled and unkempt, wailing to the heavens and kowtowing to the ground, looking around but not seeing the crown prince. They kowtowed to the heavens, and with tears in their eyes, they said, 'Heaven, earth, sun, moon, and the spirits of our parents, if I have committed any sins, I now repent them all. I hope to see my husband soon.' Then the king forcibly pulled the queen and the crown prince's consorts, and had them taken back to the palace by carriage. At that time, the crown prince was in a distant foreign country. His eyes and limbs trembled three times, and his heart was filled with worry and fear, as if he had lost something. So he bid farewell to the king there and returned to his own country. The king ordered his officials to prepare one hundred decorated treasure carriages, one thousand horses, ten thousand gold coins, and one hundred thousand silver coins. The king's five hundred ministers each gifted the crown prince ten thousand gold coins and one hundred thousand silver coins. The king and ten million subjects escorted the crown prince to the border, held a farewell banquet, thanked each other, and then parted ways. The crown prince thought, 'Since I was little, my feet have never moved carelessly, and my eyes have never looked carelessly. Before I left the country, I did not say goodbye to my parents. It must be that my parents and the people of the country are worried and distressed because they fear losing me. Now I should go back quickly and let them know my news.' He also thought, 'The road is long and far, and I cannot arrive immediately. I am afraid that my parents, because of their deep love and longing for me, might lose their lives. What method should I use to quickly send them news?' At this time, there was a crow that could speak human language, and it said to the crown prince, 'Your benevolence is supreme, and your grace extends everywhere. What is there to worry about? Whatever you want to do, I will help you.' The crown prince replied, 'I want to entrust you with a matter, and I hope you will not refuse.'
The crow said, 'As you command!' The prince said, 'I trouble you to deliver this letter to my father the king.' The crow said, 'It should be done quickly, now is the right time.' The prince wrote a letter and gave it to the crow. The crow, holding the letter in its beak, flew back to the kingdom and placed the letter before the king. The king opened the letter and read it, learning of the prince's news, and was very happy. He immediately rose and went into the palace, telling the queen, 'Just as I told you, I knew we wouldn't lose our son, and in a few days we will surely see him.' The queen, upon hearing this, felt as if she had come back to life, clapped her hands and praised, saying, 'May all under heaven be peaceful and happy, may all their wishes be fulfilled, and may their lives be boundless.' At that time, the ministers, nobles, men, women, and children of the kingdom, upon hearing the news of the prince's return, all shouted 'Long live the prince!' The king immediately, with tens of millions of ministers, prepared carriages and escorts to go out and welcome the prince. They met on the road, and the prince, seeing his father, immediately got off his precious carriage, went forward to perform the foot-kissing ceremony, and said to his father the king, 'Your son has been unfilial, causing you to lower your dignity and disturbing the borders of the kingdom. I am fortunate to receive your forgiveness!' The king said, 'Very good!' Father and son met, their joy mixed with sorrow, and returned to the palace, and all the people of the kingdom were overjoyed. The poor beggars from distant countries, upon hearing the news of the prince's return, received much money and came from afar to beg from the prince. The prince had people load carts with money and goods, and distributed them to the poor in a flat open space by the roadside. This continued every day for a year, and all who came from the four directions received what they wished for. At that time, the king said to his ministers, 'From now on, the treasures in the national treasury are to be used as needed, without any hesitation.' The virtue of giving is valued far and wide. Even enemies and evil people, upon hearing of the prince's merits, will naturally cultivate goodness. At that time, there was a five-spiritual-power immortal Taoist named Yongmeng, with five hundred disciples, who were cultivating meditation and practicing the Tao in a large cave on this mountain, aspiring to Bodhi, wanting to liberate all beings from suffering, and teaching all under heaven to do good.
At that time, Prince Chandanamati, carrying various delicious foods, went up the mountain to offer them to the various immortal ascetics. Then, the immortal master blessed the prince and preached the Dharma to him. The prince was delighted, aspired to the path of non-action, and did not want to return to the kingdom. He thought of the palace as a hell, his wife and relatives as shackles, and the pleasures of the five desires as hell. After contemplating this, he took off his necklaces and fine clothes, as well as the carriages and attendants, and gave them all to his attendant ministers, ordering them to return to the kingdom. Thereupon, the prince put on a deerskin garment and stayed in the mountains, following the master to learn the Way, and diligently studying the arts of the Way. At that time, the prince's attendants returned to the kingdom and reported to the king: 'The prince went up the mountain to offer to the immortals, and stayed there to learn the Way, refusing to return to the palace; he has mastered the scriptures and mantras, and has decided not to return.' The king said: 'This is truly painful! People have children to gain joy, and rely on them to eliminate troubles for the country in their old age. I have this son, but I am always worried and distressed. He does not desire wealth and honor, nor is he close to his relatives. What is the matter with this troublesome son!' So, he summoned his ministers to discuss the matter. The ministers said: 'The prince loves the Way, does not covet worldly glory, and aspires to the path of non-action. Since he does not want to return to the kingdom, there is nothing we can do. The king should send an envoy to ascertain his intentions, and if he is determined not to return, then we should consider other measures.' The king then sent an envoy to ask the prince: 'I am waiting for you as if I am thirsty for a drink. What is the reason for you staying in the mountains and not returning? Now the ladies and concubines are weeping and looking towards the road you would return on, grieving and distressed beyond measure. A son should bring peace to his parents, and should not go against their wishes. You should return as soon as possible.' The envoy received the order and conveyed the king's message. The prince replied: 'All things are impermanent, and the physical form does not last long. The joy of family life is followed by the pain of separation. One's life is determined by heaven, and one cannot be free. When impermanence arrives, even father and son cannot save each other. I am now seeking the path of non-action, wanting to liberate all beings from suffering. On the day I attain the Way, I will first liberate my parents. This place is not far, and I will also go back to pay my respects from time to time. Now my mind is made up, and the king should make other plans to continue the succession of the kingdom.' The envoy returned and reported to the king, explaining the matter in detail.
Then the king summoned all his ministers and re-established the crown prince. At that time, the king's wife, along with the crown prince's consorts and palace maids, followed, carrying the crown prince's clothes and adornments, as well as various sweet fruits, food, fragrant flowers, and musical instruments. They led the way, going up the mountain to the place where the crown prince was, to offer food to all the immortals. Then, they welcomed the crown prince. The queen said, 'Planting grain is to prevent hunger, digging wells is to wait for thirst, building walls is to prevent thieves, and raising a son is to serve the elderly. If you do not return to the kingdom now, my life will not be complete.' The crown prince knelt and said to the queen, 'Leaving home to live in the mountains, changing appearance and clothing, is like spitting out saliva, which cannot be eaten again. A recluse Taoist is of no use to the country. The principle has been determined and cannot be changed. I would rather shatter my body here than return. I hope mother will return in time and visit me later.' Then the queen and the crown prince's consorts, seeing that the crown prince's will was firm and he had no intention of returning, wept sadly and were filled with remorse, returning along the road. At that time, the king only hoped that the queen could bring back the crown prince, and he went out of the city with all the ministers to greet them. They only saw the queen and the crown prince's consorts, with disheveled hair and faces, beating their chests and wailing, returning empty-handed along the road. The king was even more displeased, and all the ministers could not help but weep, returning to the palace. Then, the king consoled the queen and the crown prince's wives, saying, 'My son loves the Tao, which is rare in the world; his compassionate nurturing and universal salvation benefit everyone. He is a treasure of the country, not an ordinary person. Now he likes to live in the mountains to cultivate his aspirations. As long as he is safe, we can still see each other from time to time. Now we are not far from our son, we can send him food, and news can be exchanged, which can be comforting.' Then the queen, having heard the king's consolation, felt her worries slightly relieved. She often sent people with food, as well as various sweet fruits and delicacies, to the mountains to provide for the crown prince. After many years, the crown prince also came down the mountain from time to time to visit his parents, and then returned to the mountains to cultivate the Tao. Below the mountain, there was a steep cliff and a deep valley, at the bottom of which was a mother tiger who had just given birth to seven cubs.
English version: At that time, heavy snow fell, and the tigress, embracing her cub, had been unable to find food for many days. Fearing that her cub would freeze to death, she endured hunger to protect it. The snow continued to fall, and the mother and cub were both hungry and exhausted, on the verge of death. The tigress, driven by hunger, even considered eating her own cub. At this moment, the various immortals and Taoists on the mountain, witnessing this situation, advised each other, 『Who can sacrifice themselves to save all living beings? Now is the time.』 Upon hearing this, the prince exclaimed, 『Excellent! My wish can finally be fulfilled!』 He went to the edge of the cliff, looked down, and saw the tigress embracing her cub, covered in snow. A great compassion arose in his heart, and he stood on the mountaintop, quietly entering into meditation. He immediately attained the pure, non-arising Dharma-patience; he saw the events of countless past kalpas, and the future as well. He then returned to tell his master and five hundred fellow students, 『I am now going to sacrifice myself, I hope you will all rejoice in this.』 The master said, 『Your study of the Way is still shallow, and your understanding is not yet broad. Why would you suddenly seek your own death, abandoning the body you cherish?』 The prince replied, 『I made a vow in the past that I should sacrifice my body a thousand times. I have already sacrificed my body nine hundred and ninety-nine times before, and today』s sacrifice will complete the thousand. Therefore, I will sacrifice it, and I hope master will rejoice in this.』 The master said, 『Your aspiration is lofty and profound, and no one can match it. You will surely attain enlightenment first, do not be forgotten.』 The prince bid farewell to his master and left. Then, the master and five hundred immortal Taoists, with tears in their eyes, escorted the prince to the edge of the cliff. At that time, the elder Fulan, along with five hundred men and women, brought food and drink up the mountain as offerings; seeing that the prince was going to sacrifice himself, they cried with sorrow and followed the prince to the edge of the cliff. Then, in front of everyone, the prince made a great vow: 『Today, I sacrifice my body to save the lives of all beings. May all the merits quickly lead to the attainment of Bodhi, the diamond body, the eternal, blissful, pure, and unconditioned Dharma body. May those who have not been liberated be liberated, may those who have not understood understand, and may those who are not at peace find peace. My current body is impermanent, filled with suffering, and a collection of various poisons. This body is unclean, with nine orifices constantly flowing with filth, bitten by the four great poisonous snakes, and chased and harmed by the five robbers with drawn swords.』
English version: 'Such a body, which is impermanent, is indulged with delicious food and the pleasures of the five senses, yet after death, it receives no good reward, but instead falls into hell to suffer immeasurable pain. The human body should only be used for suffering, not for pleasure.' After the prince had reproached his body for its various faults, he further vowed: 'Now I will use my flesh and blood to save that hungry tiger. The remaining relics of my bones, my parents will surely build a stupa for me later, so that all sentient beings whose bodies suffer from various illnesses, karmic causes from past lives, and cannot be cured by medicine or acupuncture, may come to my stupa and sincerely make offerings. No matter how severe the illness, it will surely be cured within a hundred days. If what I say is true, may the heavens rain down fragrant flowers.' The heavens responded by raining down Mandarava flowers, and the earth shook. The prince then removed his deerskin clothing, wrapped it around his head and eyes, and with his palms together, threw himself before the tiger. Thus, the tigress ate the Bodhisattva's flesh, and both mother and cub survived. At that time, the people on the cliff looked down and saw the prince's flesh and bones scattered by the tiger. They cried out in grief, their voices shaking the mountains; some beat their chests and threw themselves on the ground, some meditated, and some bowed their heads in repentance for the prince's actions. At that time, the gods of the Suddhavasa heavens, as well as Indra, the Four Heavenly Kings, and tens of millions of other gods of the sun and moon, all generated the supreme Bodhi mind. They played music, burned incense, scattered flowers, and offered Mandarava flowers to the prince, chanting: 'Well done! Mahasattva! Soon you will sit on the Bodhi seat.' After chanting this three times, they each returned to their heavenly palaces. The five hundred ascetics all generated the supreme and true Bodhi mind, and the great masters of the immortals attained the patience of non-birth. The king and queen sent messengers the next day, carrying food to offer to the prince on the mountain. When they arrived at the permanent stone chamber, they only saw the bedding, deerskin clothing, umbrella, bowl, staff, water bottle, and washbasin in the room, but the prince was nowhere to be found. They asked around, but no one responded. They only saw the ascetics weeping in small groups.
English version: Upon reaching the master's dwelling, they only saw the sage sitting with his hand propping his cheek, his face covered in tears. They asked all around, but received no response. The messenger, filled with fear, offered food to the sages, then ran back to report the matter in detail to the lady. The lady said, 'Did you not see my son, but only the sages?' The messenger replied, 'I only saw the sages weeping in twos and threes.' The lady said, 'Alas! My son is dead!' She beat her chest and cried out, running to the king. Upon hearing this, the king fell from his bed, losing consciousness. The ministers and the people gathered around the king, kowtowing and advising, 'The prince's situation on the mountain is uncertain, whether it is true or false, why such grief? We beseech the king to rest a little!' Then the king, the lady, the concubines, the maids, the ministers, the officials, and the people, all lifted their skirts, barefoot, and ran up the mountain. At this time, the elder Fulan also came to inform the king, 'Yesterday, the prince threw himself off the cliff, using his flesh to feed the tigers, and now only his bones remain scattered on the ground.' Then the elder led the king to the place where the prince's body was. The king, the lady, the concubines, the maids, the ministers, the officials, and the people all cried out in grief, their cries shaking the valleys. The king and the lady lay upon the prince's body, their hearts breaking, losing consciousness. The concubine stepped forward to lift the prince's head and arrange his hair, her heart shattered, crying out, 'How unfortunate, when alive you were my honor, and today we are forever separated, never to meet again. I would rather have my own body crushed to dust than have my heaven suddenly depart like this. The prince is dead, what use is there for me to live!' At this time, the ministers reported to the king, 'The prince vowed to give alms to save all beings, and was taken by the impermanent death god. Before the body rots, we should make offerings.' So they collected the bones, carried them out of the valley, and in a flat place, they piled up sandalwood and various fragrant woods, using various spices, ghee, silk coverings, and banners to cremate the prince, collecting the relics and placing them in precious vessels. Then they built a seven-jeweled pagoda there, decorating it with various treasures.
English version: The pagoda extended ten miles in all directions, with various flowers and fruits arranged, and flowing springs and bathing pools that were dignified and clean. The king often ordered the four groups of musicians to offer entertainment to this pagoda day and night. The Buddha told Ananda, 'The prince at that time was myself; the king father at that time is now my father, Suddhodana; the queen at that time was my mother, Maya; the concubines at that time are now Gopa; the minister Jeya at that time is Ananda; the divine master on the mountain at that time is Maitreya; King Petisha is Nanda; the Brahmin at that time is Rahula. Bodhisattva Maitreya has always been my teacher since the past. Because I gave alms without sparing my life to save sentient beings, I surpassed my teacher by nine kalpas and became a Buddha, and now I can attain Buddhahood to save countless beings.' When the Buddha finished speaking, eighty-four thousand beings, including gods, dragons, and humans, all developed the supreme and equal mind of enlightenment, and eight thousand monks exhausted their afflictions, broke free from bondage, and attained the Arhatship. The king, ministers, gods, dragons, and spirits, upon hearing what the Buddha said, were all greatly delighted, paid homage to the Buddha, and departed. (The Danxiang version continues) At that time, after hearing what the Buddha said, the king immediately erected a large pagoda at that place, named 'The Bodhisattva Throwing Himself to the Hungry Tiger Pagoda,' which still exists today. Below the mountain on the east side of the pagoda are monastic residences, lecture halls, and monasteries, where five thousand monks regularly receive the four kinds of offerings, and the Dharma flourishes. At that time, seeing people from various countries suffering from leprosy, madness, deafness, blindness, crippled hands and feet, and various other diseases, they all came to this pagoda, burned incense, lit lamps, applied fragrant mud to the ground, repaired and cleaned, and repented by bowing their heads. All kinds of diseases were cured. Those who were cured before left, and those who came later followed; there were often over a hundred people, regardless of their status, and it never stopped.
