爾時世尊,從本座起,詣安陀林,於一樹下,晝日棲止,宴寂而坐。是時諸苾芻眾,于其園林,別會一舍,依次而坐,所謂尊者阿難、尊者聞二百億、尊者阿泥樓馱、尊者舍利子,如是等諸苾芻眾,既共集會,乃相謂言:「世間人眾,何所修作,多獲義利?」尊者阿難言:「色相行業,若人修作,多獲義利。」尊者聞二百億言:「精進行業,若人修作,多獲義利。」尊者阿泥樓馱言:「工巧行業,若人修作,多獲義利。」尊者舍利子言:「智慧行業,若人修作,多獲義利。」如是說已,咸作念言:「我等今者言說差別,不相齊等,所謂各各建立最勝。若以此義,往問世尊,必為我等隨應宣說。如其所說,我等奉持。何以故?世尊大師,能斷疑故,是大悲者。譬如日光燭諸幽暗,以一切智,破諸疑惑;解除苦網救度有情,令歸正道;等視有情,猶如一子;一切法中,而得自在;以一切法,作大利益。大牟尼尊,能與一切息諸疑惑;佛常勤為解除疑結,是故我等宜共往問。」時諸苾芻互言議已,欲往見佛

爾時世尊,從本座起,前往安陀林,在一棵樹下,白天休息,安靜地坐著。當時,眾比丘在園林中,各自聚集在一處,依次坐下,包括尊者阿難、尊者聞二百億、尊者阿泥樓馱、尊者舍利子等眾比丘。他們聚在一起,互相說道:『世間眾人,修習什麼行為,能獲得最大的利益呢?』尊者阿難說:『如果修習色相行業,就能獲得最大的利益。』尊者聞二百億說:『如果修習精進行業,就能獲得最大的利益。』尊者阿泥樓馱說:『如果修習工巧行業,就能獲得最大的利益。』尊者舍利子說:『如果修習智慧行業,就能獲得最大的利益。』他們這樣說完,都想到:『我們現在所說的各有不同,並不一致,各自都認為自己所說是最殊勝的。如果把這個問題去問世尊,他一定會為我們隨宜宣說。我們按照他所說的去做。為什麼呢?因為世尊是大師,能夠斷除疑惑,是大慈大悲的人。就像日光照亮所有黑暗,以一切智慧,破除所有疑惑;解除痛苦的羅網,救度眾生,讓他們迴歸正道;平等看待眾生,如同看待自己的孩子;在一切法中,都能自在;以一切法,作最大的利益。大牟尼尊,能夠讓一切眾生息滅疑惑;佛陀常常勤奮地為眾生解除疑結,所以我們應該一起去請問他。』當時,眾比丘互相商議后,想要去見佛陀。

At that time, the World Honored One rose from his seat and went to the Andha Grove. There, under a tree, he rested during the day, sitting in peaceful solitude. At that time, the assembly of monks, in the garden, gathered separately in a hall, sitting in order. Among them were the Venerable Ananda, the Venerable Vimsatikoti, the Venerable Anuruddha, and the Venerable Sariputra, and other monks. Having gathered together, they spoke to each other, saying, 'Among the people of the world, what practices, when cultivated, yield the greatest benefit?' The Venerable Ananda said, 'If one cultivates practices related to physical appearance, one will obtain the greatest benefit.' The Venerable Vimsatikoti said, 'If one cultivates practices of diligent effort, one will obtain the greatest benefit.' The Venerable Anuruddha said, 'If one cultivates practices of skillful craftsmanship, one will obtain the greatest benefit.' The Venerable Sariputra said, 'If one cultivates practices of wisdom, one will obtain the greatest benefit.' Having spoken thus, they all thought, 'Our words are different and not in agreement, each of us establishing our own as the most superior. If we were to ask the World Honored One about this matter, he would surely explain it to us accordingly. We will follow what he says. Why is that? Because the World Honored One is the great master, able to dispel doubts, and is of great compassion. Like the sunlight illuminating all darkness, with all-encompassing wisdom, he breaks through all doubts; he releases the net of suffering, saves sentient beings, and leads them back to the right path; he regards all sentient beings equally, as if they were his own children; in all dharmas, he is free; with all dharmas, he brings the greatest benefit. The Great Muni, the Honored One, is able to extinguish all doubts; the Buddha is always diligent in resolving the knots of doubt, therefore we should go together to ask him.' At that time, the monks, having discussed among themselves, desired to go and see the Buddha.

是時世尊在於林中,以凈天耳過於人耳,聞苾芻眾以如是事集會議論,即從三摩地起,詣苾芻所。時諸苾芻,前迎世尊,設座奉請。佛就座已,告苾芻言:「諸苾芻!向聞汝等共相議言:『世間人眾,何所修作,多獲義利?』初阿難言,色相修作多獲義利;聞二百億言,精進修作多獲義利;阿泥樓馱言,工巧修作多獲義利;舍利子言,智慧修作多獲義利。如是說已,又起念言:『所說差別,不相齊等,所謂各各建立最勝。若以此義,往問世尊,佛必為我隨應宣說。如其所說,我等奉持。』是事云何?」
諸苾芻白佛言:「誠哉!世尊!我等曏者為以此緣集會議論,愿佛今時開決疑惑。」
爾時世尊為發此緣,說伽陀曰:
「色相工巧與精進, 智慧于中為最勝; 若諸有情修福因, 所獲福果又極勝。」
說是伽陀已,復告苾芻言:「諸苾芻,或時有人,於色相等,若隨修作,非一切種、一切時,多獲義利。若修福力,於一切種及一切時,多獲義利。諸苾芻!如福力者,我不見有一法,而諸有情隨修作已,多獲義利。何以故?諸苾芻!我念過去世時有王,名曰眼力,安止王城,善布國政,威神廣大,安隱豐樂,人民熾盛。其王有後,名曰廣照,色相殊妙,人所樂見
現代漢語譯本:當時,世尊在林中,以清凈的天耳,超越人耳的聽力,聽見比丘們在議論這件事,便從禪定中起身,來到比丘們所在的地方。比丘們上前迎接世尊,設定座位,恭請世尊入座。佛陀坐下後,對比丘們說:『諸位比丘!我剛才聽到你們在議論:『世間眾人,修習什麼才能獲得最大的利益?』最初阿難說,修習外貌儀態能獲得最大的利益;二百億說,修習精進能獲得最大的利益;阿泥樓馱說,修習工巧技藝能獲得最大的利益;舍利子說,修習智慧能獲得最大的利益。』這樣說完后,又想到:『所說的各有不同,不能相互比較,各自都認為自己所說的最殊勝。如果把這個問題去問世尊,佛陀一定會為我們隨順解答。我們按照佛陀所說的去做。』事情是這樣的嗎?」 比丘們回答佛陀說:『確實如此,世尊!我們剛才正是因為這個原因在議論,希望佛陀現在能為我們解開疑惑。』 這時,世尊爲了闡明這個道理,說了偈語: 『外貌儀態、工巧技藝和精進,其中智慧最為殊勝;如果眾生修習福德的因,所獲得的福報也極其殊勝。』 說完偈語后,佛陀又對比丘們說:『諸位比丘,有時有人,在修習外貌儀態等方面,並非在所有情況下都能獲得最大的利益。如果修習福德的力量,在所有情況下都能獲得最大的利益。諸位比丘!對於福德的力量,我沒有看到有哪一種法,眾生修習后,能獲得更大的利益。為什麼呢?諸位比丘!我記得過去世時有一位國王,名叫眼力,安居在王城,善於治理國家,威望廣大,國家安穩富足,人民興盛。這位國王有一位王后,名叫廣照,容貌非常美麗,令人喜愛。』
English version: At that time, the World Honored One was in the forest, and with his pure heavenly ear, surpassing human ears, he heard the monks discussing this matter. He then arose from his samadhi and went to where the monks were. The monks went forward to greet the World Honored One, set up a seat, and invited him to sit. After the Buddha was seated, he said to the monks, 'Monks! I just heard you discussing: 『What practice do people in the world engage in to gain the greatest benefit?』 Initially, Ananda said that practicing physical appearance brings the greatest benefit; two hundred billion said that practicing diligence brings the greatest benefit; Anuruddha said that practicing skillful crafts brings the greatest benefit; and Sariputra said that practicing wisdom brings the greatest benefit.』 After saying this, you also thought: 『What was said is different and cannot be compared, each considering their own statement to be the most superior. If we ask the World Honored One about this, the Buddha will surely explain it to us accordingly. We will act according to what the Buddha says.』 Is this the case?' The monks replied to the Buddha, 'Indeed, World Honored One! We were just discussing this matter for this reason, and we hope that the Buddha can now resolve our doubts.' At this time, the World Honored One, in order to clarify this principle, spoke a verse: 'Physical appearance, skillful crafts, and diligence, among them wisdom is the most superior; if sentient beings cultivate the cause of merit, the resulting blessings are also extremely superior.' After speaking the verse, the Buddha again said to the monks, 'Monks, sometimes people, in practicing physical appearance and so on, do not gain the greatest benefit in all circumstances. If one cultivates the power of merit, one can gain the greatest benefit in all circumstances. Monks! Regarding the power of merit, I have not seen any dharma that, when practiced by sentient beings, can bring greater benefit. Why is that? Monks! I remember in a past life there was a king named Eye Power, who resided in the royal city, was good at governing the country, had great prestige, and the country was peaceful, prosperous, and the people were thriving. This king had a queen named Broad Illumination, whose appearance was very beautiful and pleasing to see.'
。彼廣照后,後於一時,與王同會,嬉戲娛樂,由戲樂故,誕生一子,容止端嚴,人所樂見,殊妙過人,具天色相。而彼太子生生廣植妙色相因,由彼具足殊妙色相,是故今為立名色力。如是次第,乃至其後,別生三子:彼第一者,精進具足,第二工巧具足,第三智慧具足。
「複次,苾芻!彼廣照后,最後復有一子托陰,是日忽然其王宮中,種種珍寶自天而降;復有微妙種種莊嚴珠寶、露幔,俱時出現,覆王后上。時眼力王,見是希有殊特事已,中心異之;即召相師,而詢問言:『今此希有殊特之相,其故云何?』相師對曰:『大王當知,王后有子,托質聖胎,其子大福,具大威德,當具名稱。』王聞語已,復生驚歎,乃至后時,其廣照后,忽起思念,乃作是言:『大哉!我今欲乘上妙師子之座,覆以白蓋及須寶拂。』即以此事,具白于王。王聞其言,心生歡喜,敕令周遍清凈嚴潔宮城內外,如其所欲,悉為辦造。
「又復一時,彼廣照后,忽起思念,乃作是言:『我今往彼大金寶聚,踞于其上,隨意舉手,自取金寶,普為一切,廣行佈施,使匱乏者財寶豐盈。』以事聞王,王隨所作。
「又復一時,彼廣照后,忽起思念,乃作是言:『快哉!我今欲令釋放一切禁系

English version: Queen Guangzhao, later at a certain time, gathered with the king, playing and enjoying themselves. Because of this playing and enjoyment, she gave birth to a son, whose appearance was upright and dignified, pleasing to all who saw him. He was exceptionally wonderful, surpassing ordinary people, and possessed a naturally beautiful appearance. This prince, life after life, had extensively planted the causes for a beautiful appearance. Because he possessed such a remarkably wonderful appearance, he was now named 'Color Power'. In this order, and later, she gave birth to three more sons: the first son was complete in diligence, the second son was complete in craftsmanship, and the third son was complete in wisdom. The diviner replied, 'Great King, you should know that the queen is pregnant, and the fetus has a sacred quality. This child has great blessings, great power and virtue, and will be very famous in the future.' The king, upon hearing this, was even more amazed. Later, Queen Guangzhao suddenly had a thought and said, 'Wonderful! I now wish to sit on a superior lion throne, covered with a white canopy and precious whisks.' She then told the king about this in detail. The king, upon hearing her words, was very happy and ordered the entire palace, inside and out, to be cleaned and prepared according to her wishes. English version: 'After some time, Queen Guangzhao suddenly had a thought and said, 'I now wish to go to that great pile of gold treasures, sit on it, and freely raise my hand to take gold treasures, and universally give them to everyone, widely practicing generosity, so that those who lack wealth will become rich.' I now wish to release all those who are imprisoned.'

「又復一時,彼廣照后,忽起思念,乃作是言:『快哉!我今欲遊園林。』以事聞王,王隨所欲,使凈園林,令其觀賞。
「又復一時,彼廣照后,忽起思念,乃作是言:『快哉!我今於此宮屬多人眾前,以如是事,發誠實語:「若我真實有福報者,惟愿天人速疾奉我殊妙莊嚴勝師子座。我若得已處其座上,廣為人眾宣說法要。」』如是言已,颙俟諸天,降希有相。以事聞王,時眼力王,即于宮中,敕令周遍清凈嚴潔所有王城內外,一切人眾,悉著凈衣及妙嚴飾,各持異香華鬘,咸來集會。時廣照后,以眾嚴具殊妙嚴飾,宮嬪、眷屬、侍從圍繞,出詣眾前,相好莊嚴,其猶天女;一切人眾,咸所瞻仰,俱生歡悅。是時王后,于諸有情,隨起慈心,仰瞻虛空,以其真實加持力故,說伽陀曰:
「『天主人主及解脫, 是三福力若最勝; 由此真實我今時, 愿天速布師子座。』
「說是伽陀已,即時忽然天降勝妙師子之座及散妙華;空中諸天,悉皆胥悅。時彼人眾,見是希有殊特事已,咸生愛樂,俱共嘆異,說伽陀曰:
「『希有大福大力能, 一切世間今供養; 人間所欲天能成, 彼天福力為勝上

I now wish to speak these truthful words before the many people in this palace: 「If I truly have blessings, may the heavenly beings quickly present me with a magnificent and adorned lion throne. If I obtain it and sit upon it, I will expound the essence of the Dharma to the masses.」' Having said this, she looked up to the sky, awaiting the descent of rare phenomena from the heavens. She reported this matter to the king, and King Yanli immediately ordered the entire city, inside and outside the palace, to be cleaned and tidied. All the people were to wear clean clothes and beautiful ornaments, each holding different fragrant flowers, and all were to come. At that time, Queen Guangzhao, adorned with various magnificent ornaments, surrounded by palace maids, relatives, and attendants, came before the crowd, her appearance dignified, like a celestial maiden; all the people looked up to her, and all felt great joy. At this time, the queen, with compassion for all sentient beings, looked up to the sky, and through the power of her true blessings, spoke a verse:' 'The Lord of Heaven, the Lord of Men, and liberation, if these three blessings are the most supreme; by this truth, I now wish that the heavens quickly bestow a lion throne.' 'Having spoken this verse, immediately a magnificent lion throne descended from the heavens, and beautiful flowers were scattered; the heavenly beings in the sky were all very joyful. At that time, the people there, seeing this rare and extraordinary event, all felt admiration, and together they praised and marveled, speaking a verse:' 'Rare is the great blessing and power, which the entire world now offers; what is desired in the human realm, the heavens can fulfill, the power of that heavenly blessing is most supreme.'

「時廣照后,心生歡喜,處師子座;升是座已,即時大地六種震動,其師子座,從地踴起,住虛空中,高七人量,復有種種殊妙珍寶莊嚴,露幔覆于座上。彼諸人眾,見是福力瑞相殊特,生欣樂意,各以所持異香華鬘,供獻王后,合掌肅恭,以利益心,居前而坐,聽受其語。
「時眼力王,見是事已,極大歡悅,與諸官屬,合掌肅恭,依次而坐。
「爾時廣照后,即說伽陀曰:
「『人當修作諸福因, 如彼所作勿間斷; 隨其樂欲施作時, 由福藏故獲妙樂。』
「說是伽陀已,空中自然有聲贊言:『汝今善說!最上善說!』又復空中,奏天微妙可愛音樂。其眼力王與諸人眾,聞說伽陀,時自然天降殊妙衣服及莊嚴具,各墮其身,王及人眾,即以所降衣服莊嚴,前奉王后,異口同音,作是贊言:『善說!善說!』即時王后,從師子座,自空徐下,安處於地。爾時天樂即隨停止,復奏人間所有音樂,王及人眾,咸生尊重。廣供奉已,悉皆歡喜。時廣照后,回入宮中,既入宮已,彼師子座,空中隨隱。時諸人眾,顯明觀見,如上瑞相,歡喜贊言:『奇哉福力,具大威德。奇哉福力,是甘美果

Those people, witnessing this extraordinary auspicious sign of blessed power, were filled with joy, and each offered the various fragrances and garlands they held to the Queen, respectfully joining their palms, with a mind of benefiting all beings, they sat in front, listening to her words. 'After reciting the verse, a voice naturally arose in the air, praising: 'You have spoken well! Utterly well spoken!' And in the air, heavenly, exquisite, and lovely music was played. Furthermore, a hundred elephants, from the wilderness, naturally entered the royal palace and stayed in the stables. And a hundred cows came to the fields, without plowing, naturally, on time, all seeds fully matured. Furthermore, beneath the lion throne, there were five great treasuries, filled with various treasures, with their entrances revealed, available for use at will, never to be exhausted. 「時眼力王,與其宮嬪、侍衛、眷屬、耆舊臣佐等,顯觀如是吉祥勝相,咸生嘆異,作如是言:『奇哉!太子,有大福力。奇哉!太子,具大名稱。今人中生,乃有如是天中吉祥廣大勝相,俱時出現。』時王歡喜,憐愛子故,敕主藏者:『汝今應開我之庫藏,廣出一切所有金寶,我當爲施所有一類善祝願者,使彼皆得財寶豐盈,令其為我妙善稱讚,廣作福事;然復愿我生生廣集吉祥勝福,當爲太子安立名字。』即時謂彼諸臣佐言:『今此太子當立何名?』近臣白言:『大王!今此太子,現生廣有吉祥福力勝相出現,是故宜應立名福力。』即時王敕福力為名。

If I could now obtain a small portion of food from the heavens, I would use it to give to these hungry ghosts.』 At that time, suddenly, much food descended from the heavens. Prince Fulili, immediately used this food to give to the hungry ghosts. Those hungry ghosts, due to the power of their past karma, were all unable to see it, and all said: 『Prince! I have heard that you are compassionate, why do you not now give us food?』 The prince said: 『I have given you the food that descended from the heavens, why do you not take it now?』 The hungry ghosts said: 『Prince! Due to the power of our past karma, we are all unable to see it.』 At that time, Prince Fulili, again had this thought: 『How pitiful! Stinginess is not to be loved.』 Then he said: 『If the blessings have great power, by my true words, may these hungry ghosts be able to see the food, and all be able to take it as they should.』
。』發是言已,彼諸餓鬼,悉能見食,即時各變,面相如人。福力太子,心生歡喜,遂以飲食,恣其所取。彼餓鬼眾,既得食已,頓止飢渴,身力完具,壯實充盛,無醜惡形,乃于福力太子,各起清凈歡喜之意;即時命終,皆得生於兜率天上,旋處空中,白太子言:『太子!我等得生兜率天上,皆由汝之威神建立。』
「福力太子,聞此妙善語已,深大慶悅,即時前進詣園林中,與彼諸兄,共會議言:『世間人眾,何所修作,多獲義利?』彼色相具足者言:『今此世間色相行業,若人修作,多獲義利。何故知邪?謂若有人,他昔未見,見即歡喜;昔未信重,見已信重。如我往昔,師尊仙人,亦作是說,若有具足妙色相者,為人所喜,妙色可觀,瞻奉愛樂;猶如智人,樂最上法,設諸供養。』
「複次,精進具足者言:『非修色相多獲義利!今此應知,精進行業,若人修作,多獲義利。何以故?雖修色相,而無精進,豈能現世及他世中,獲可意果?或謂色相多獲義利者,彼是愚人,癡見所覆。如我所說,精進行業,于現世中能成可意果者,謂猶農夫植種,商賈獲利,仕者受祿,學人通教,修習禪定,得輕安果,皆為現世精進所成諸可意果
現代漢語譯本:『當他發出這個聲音時,那些餓鬼都能看見食物,並且立刻改變了面貌,變得像人一樣。福力太子心中非常高興,於是就讓它們隨意取用食物。那些餓鬼們得到食物后,立刻止住了飢餓和乾渴,身體變得強壯有力,不再有醜陋的模樣,他們對福力太子都產生了清凈歡喜的心意;隨即他們就去世了,都轉生到了兜率天,在空中盤旋,對太子說:『太子!我們能夠轉生到兜率天,都是因為您的威神力量。』 福力太子聽到這些美妙的話語后,心中非常高興,立刻走到園林中,和他的哥哥們一起商議說:『世間的人們,做什麼修行,才能獲得最大的利益呢?』其中一個外貌出衆的哥哥說:『現在這個世間,修習外貌的行業,如果有人修習,就能獲得最大的利益。為什麼這麼說呢?因為如果有人,以前沒見過你,見到你就會歡喜;以前不信任你,見到你就會信任你。就像我以前的老師仙人也說過,如果有人擁有美好的外貌,就會被人喜歡,外貌美好,值得觀看,讓人愛慕;就像有智慧的人,喜歡最上乘的佛法,會供養佛法一樣。』 另外,一個精進的哥哥說:『修習外貌並不能獲得最大的利益!現在應該知道,精進行業,如果有人修習,才能獲得最大的利益。為什麼呢?即使修習外貌,如果沒有精進,怎麼能在今生和來世獲得如意的結果呢?那些認為修習外貌能獲得最大利益的人,都是愚蠢的人,被癡迷的見解所矇蔽。就像我所說的,精進行業,在今生就能成就如意的結果,就像農夫種植莊稼,商人獲得利潤,當官的獲得俸祿,學習的人通曉教義,修習禪定的人獲得輕安的果實,這些都是今生精進所成就的如意結果。』
English version: 'When he uttered this sound, those hungry ghosts were able to see the food, and immediately their faces transformed, becoming like those of humans. Prince Fukuryoku was overjoyed, and so he allowed them to take food as they pleased. Once the hungry ghosts had received the food, they immediately stopped being hungry and thirsty, their bodies became strong and powerful, and they no longer had ugly appearances. They all developed pure and joyful intentions towards Prince Fukuryoku; then they passed away and were all reborn in the Tushita Heaven, hovering in the air, they said to the prince: 『Prince! Our rebirth in the Tushita Heaven is all due to your majestic power.』 Prince Fukuryoku, upon hearing these wonderful words, was deeply delighted. He immediately went to the garden and discussed with his brothers, saying: 『What practices should people in the world cultivate to gain the greatest benefit?』 One of the brothers, who had a beautiful appearance, said: 『In this world, the practice of cultivating one's appearance, if someone cultivates it, will bring the greatest benefit. Why do I say this? Because if someone has never seen you before, they will be happy to see you; if they did not trust you before, they will trust you after seeing you. Just like my former teacher, the sage, also said, if someone has a beautiful appearance, they will be liked by people, their appearance will be beautiful and worth seeing, and people will love and admire them; just like wise people who love the supreme Dharma and make offerings to it.』 Furthermore, another brother, who was diligent, said: 『Cultivating one's appearance does not bring the greatest benefit! Now it should be known that the practice of diligence, if someone cultivates it, will bring the greatest benefit. Why is that? Even if one cultivates their appearance, without diligence, how can one obtain desirable results in this life and the next? Those who think that cultivating one's appearance brings the greatest benefit are foolish people, blinded by deluded views. As I said, the practice of diligence can achieve desirable results in this life, just like farmers planting crops, merchants making profits, officials receiving salaries, students understanding teachings, and those who practice meditation obtaining the fruit of lightness and ease, all these are desirable results achieved through diligence in this life.』
。又此精進,於他世中能成可意果者,謂生善趣及生天界,大富自在,現證解脫,皆為他世精進所成諸可意果。由此一切功德,皆以精進而為依止。又此精進,能治怯弱,若運精進,無有少法而難成者。』
「複次,工巧具足者言:『汝諸仁者,雖復多種所說,而實不能稱可我心。何以故?所有精進,若無工巧,而終不能現有所成;若復精進同工巧作,乃能如實所作現成。是故應知,工巧行業,若人修作,多獲義利。又復具工巧者,若王、若臣,若沙門、婆羅門,諸長者等,乃至下族中人,及諸工巧之者,悉來供獻。』
「複次,智慧具足者言:『汝等當知,人所修作,多獲義利者,且非色相,亦非精進,又非工巧。何以故?所觀色相,若無智慧,雖復相似而不凈妙。所起精進,若無智慧,雖得義利而無有成。所作工巧,若無智慧,雖復營修不能攝持。是故應知,智慧能成一切事業,若人修作,多獲義利。又此智慧,能得色相,能成工巧,能發精進,能獲人中一切妙樂。』
「爾時福力太子,熙怡瞻視具智慧者,而謂之言:『如是,如是!汝言真實。所有色相、工巧、精進,若無智慧,不能多獲義利。故知智慧普能攝持諸如實果。仁者!然此智慧若無福力,諸有所作,亦不得成

Blessings possess wisdom, blessings can sing the praises of the merits of the righteous Dharma. Blessings possess intelligence and quickness, blessings allow one to walk the righteous path. Blessings lead to birth in a noble family, blessings grant the ability to remember past lives, blessings bring a good reputation, blessings perfect the practice of precepts, blessings enable giving, the power of blessings ensures that the senses remain intact, blessings bring constant happiness, those with blessings are often honored by the wise, blessings perfect all powers, blessings often lead to encounters with good friends and knowledgeable people. The power of blessings can accomplish all endeavors—such as cultivating fields, or engaging in commerce for profit, with little effort one can accumulate great wealth and become prosperous and free. Those with blessings, even in thought, will have clothes, food, and treasures naturally rain down from the sky, everything is complete, and they can enjoy happiness as they wish. Blessings bring desirable and beautiful dwellings; blessings in this life and in future lives often bring beautiful wives, daughters, family members, and wealth and grains. The places where those with blessings walk are naturally free of thorns and gravel, and they walk smoothly; those with blessings also obtain a large physical form; if there are sick people, when those with blessings touch them with their hands, their illnesses will lessen or be cured; moreover, when those with blessings touch others, they can provide them with food, clothing, treasures, and wealth and grains, for endless use; those with blessings are often protected by gods, dragons, yakshas, rakshasas, and ghosts everywhere, just as the gods who protect crops during rain protect them. 「太子說是諸福事時,四兄異見,修作不同,於是太子,又復言曰:『我今欲與諸兄潛適他國,隨所住處,證驗其事。為當色相人多修邪?或復精進、工巧、智慧福力人多修邪?』是時四兄,聞其言已,悉隨所行,不復告白父王,即適他國。
「入一國已,易其裝飾,各求棲止。時色相具足者,以妙色故,人所瞻睹,皆生悅意,隨獲富盛,受用資養。精進具足者,以勇力故,能有所取;而忽見一迅流大河,深廣可怖,中有極大旃檀香樹,彼精進者,取得其樹,貨易獲利,而成富盛,受用資養

Moreover, the greatly blessed one can become a king, possessing everything and being free from all diseases; the blessed one is often wealthy and prosperous, and will not decline; the blessed one obtains the treasures of the wheel-turning king, with all seven treasures complete; the blessed one can walk in the void; the blessed one's radiance is equal to the sun and moon; the blessed one can become the moon god; the blessed one can become the sun god; the blessed one can become Brahma; the blessed one can become Indra; the blessed one can walk in the heavenly palaces and pavilions, like a heavenly prince; the blessed one has great power, like the Asura king; the blessed one is often born in good realms; the blessed one abandons evil realms; the blessed one often obtains the most rare and delightful beautiful flowers; the blessed one's actions are successful; the blessed one can bring light to the world; the blessed one often receives the sincere offerings of gods, humans, and Asuras.' 「爾時福力太子,隨自勝福大威德力,周行施作利益福事。一日忽過貧人之舍,乃入其中,以彼太子福威力故,是舍忽有廣大吉祥勝相出現,金寶財谷,周匝充盈。時彼貧人,見已驚怪歡喜,思念:『此如是事,昔所未有,由何所起?從何所來?豈非此人來我舍中,是其威力之所致邪?』又念:『我昔極受貧苦,今獲勝利,一切豐盈,必由是人來此所致,使我舍中吉祥相現。此人大福,有大名稱,宜應于彼尊重供養。』由是尊奉,相續無間。太子于其貧人舍中,致諸富盛,令快樂已,乃至后時,遍流聲譽:『某甲舍中,昔甚貧匱,有一異人,來入其舍,彼威力故,是舍忽然吉祥相現。』諸人聞已,于福力太子咸生信重,俱共贊言:『奇哉!勝福,有大力能。』又以太子福威力故,于彼方處,華樹果樹,開敷結實,時令不愆,遍灑甘雨,種子產生,而得滋茂。時諸人眾,于福力太子,深生愛樂,俱來瞻仰

Those endowed with wisdom, through their clever intelligence, can resolve great animosities, and also befriend those with wealth and power, pleasing them and making them happy, thus obtaining clothing, treasures, and other things, enjoying material provisions as they desire. At that time, Prince Fortune Power, relying on his own great merit and powerful virtue, traveled around performing beneficial deeds for the welfare of all beings. One day, he happened to pass by the dwelling of a poor person and entered it. Due to the power of the prince's merit, this house suddenly manifested vast auspicious signs, with gold, treasures, and grains filling the place. When the poor person saw this, he was both astonished and delighted, thinking: 'Such a thing has never happened before. How did this come about? Where did it come from? Could it be that this person came to my house, and it is due to his power?' He also thought: 'I was extremely poor before, but now I have gained victory, and everything is abundant. This must be because this person came here, causing auspicious signs to appear in my house. This person has great merit and a great reputation, and I should respect and make offerings to him.' Therefore, he respectfully served the prince without interruption. The prince made this poor person's house wealthy and prosperous, and after making them happy, the matter even spread far and wide, with people saying: 'So-and-so's house was very poor before, but a remarkable person came to their house, and because of his power, their house suddenly manifested auspicious signs.' Upon hearing this, people developed respect for Prince Fortune Power, and together they praised him, saying: 'How marvelous! He has great merit and great power.' Furthermore, due to the power of the prince's merit, in that place, flowering trees and fruit trees blossomed and bore fruit in due season, sweet rain fell everywhere, seeds grew, and flourished. At that time, the people developed deep love and respect for Prince Fortune Power, and they all came to gaze upon him.

「是時太子,為諸來者普攝其心,故作是念:『快哉!今時我此舍中,可能獲得一切珍寶,種種樂具,及諸妙巧悅意等物,給所來者使令具足。』發是心時,應念即現諸珍寶等,皆悉豐盈。時諸人眾,驚異嘆言:『奇哉!大福,為甘美果。』乃于太子咸生尊重。是時太子,即為諸人,如其所應,以四攝法,平等攝持,悉令和合,所謂同一佈施、愛語、利行、同事。由是名稱普聞一切國邑聚落。
「乃至后時,太子漸次到一國中,見其國王治罰一人善醫業者,敕彼獄官,破其身胑,斷截手足。流血既多,楚毒苦惱,是時被治罰人見太子已,發大苦聲,啼泣告言:『仁者!救我。仁者!救我。』太子即時惻愴斯事,乃自思惟:『我今作何方便救此人苦?』由是念間,忽生智解,如我所有施作福力世間現見。作是念已,悲心內激,即破自身,多出其血,授彼令飲,苦惱得除。太子又見手足已斷甚大苦惱,即取利刀斷己手足,置於彼人手足斷處。是時太子觀察虛空,普於一切有情隨起慈心,即發廣大真實愿言:『我於此生,曾無少分不善之業,若我所說為真實者,愿令此人手足斷處,即於今時支節相合,平復如故。』發是言已,彼人即時支節相合,身體完具,平復如故

These four means are: giving, kind speech, beneficial action, and cooperation. Because of this, the Crown Prince's name spread throughout all the countries and villages. Later, the Crown Prince gradually arrived in a country and saw that the king of that country was punishing a person skilled in medicine, ordering the prison officials to break his body and cut off his hands and feet. Much blood flowed, and he was in great pain. At this time, the person being punished saw the Crown Prince and cried out in great pain, weeping and saying: 'Kind one! Save me. Kind one! Save me.' The Crown Prince immediately felt compassion for this matter, and then thought to himself: 'What means can I use now to save this person from suffering?' Just as he was thinking, wisdom arose, just as all the good deeds and merits I have done are manifested in the world. After having this thought, compassion arose in his heart, and he broke open his own body, letting much blood flow, and gave it to that person to drink, and his suffering was relieved. The Crown Prince then saw that the person's hands and feet had been cut off, causing great suffering, so he took a sharp knife and cut off his own hands and feet, placing them at the places where the other person's hands and feet had been cut off. At this time, the Crown Prince observed the void, and universally generated a compassionate heart for all sentient beings, and made a great and true vow: 'In this life, I have never done any unwholesome deeds. 「爾時帝釋天主,即自思惟:『此何事相?』而復觀察,乃見福力太子作彼最上極難行事,歡喜嘆異。又念:『今此大威德者,作是難事,何所求邪?我今宜往證驗其故。』即變婆羅門相自天而降,住太子前告言:『太子!我向見汝斷自手足,何所為邪?』太子答言:『仁者!他有苦惱,即我苦惱;若他快樂,即我快樂。故我向者見一被治罰人,甚大苦惱,我時乃以真實力故,棄捨自身手足支分,填續其人所斷割處,願力真誠,彼獲如故。』

The prince replied: 'Kind sir! The suffering of others is my suffering; if others are happy, then I am happy. Therefore, when I saw a person being punished and in great pain, I used the power of truth to give up my own limbs and fill the places where his were severed. Because my vow was true and sincere, he was restored to his original state.' At this time, the lord of the Devas, Indra, was even more astonished, and he returned to his original form, saying to the prince: 'Are you not now abandoning your body because of an insincere heart, or some other intention, or because you have regressed?' 「爾時帝釋天主,見是福力,現生果報,希有瑞相,又知人天悉皆胥悅,心頗異之。乃謂福力太子言:『太子!汝今如是勤修勝行,有何所求?』太子白言:『天主!我為求證阿耨多羅三藐三菩提果,拯拔一切有情,出生死海,悉令安住究竟涅槃。』時帝釋天主,知福力太子勤求阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,深心不動,猶若須彌,稱可其意,作是贊言:『善哉,善哉!大士!汝有廣大最上願力,必當速證阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。』如是言已,隱身不現。
「複次,於後彼國之王耆年而終,其王未立灌頂太子,於是王之宗族臣佐人民,共會議言:『我等於今當令何人紹灌頂位?』時一人言:『若有福力大名稱者,可宜紹位

Great being! You possess such vast and supreme vows, you will surely quickly attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi.' After saying these words, he disappeared. Furthermore, later, the king of that country grew old and passed away. The king had not established a crown prince to succeed him. Therefore, the king's relatives, ministers, and people discussed together, saying, 'Who should we appoint to succeed to the throne now?' At that time, one person said, 'If there is someone with great fortune and reputation, he should be the one to succeed to the throne.'

「是時福力太子,當繼王位,善根開發,與諸侍從,出遊園林;太子行時,道路平坦,觸處皆無荊棘砂礫;于其中路,吉祥相現:細雨散空,旋布其頂;異色飛鳥,順次宛轉;童男童女,發勝妙聲,踴躍奔馳,咸生歡悅;一切人眾,身毛喜豎,皆得輕安。又聞空中悅意之言。太子睹斯事相,即起思念:『此相出現,我當決定紹灌頂位。』作是念已,進詣園中,受諸福樂。其園有一大無憂樹,華開茂盛,太子于彼安然寢寐。諸同往者,樂華果故,各于園中,隨處遊賞。又復太子,福威力故,彼有龍王,忽然從地涌出千葉微妙蓮華,其量廣大,色香具足,最上可愛。而彼龍王,又以神力徐置太子在蓮華上;爾時太子都無動覺。由是漸過食時,日正中分,余諸樹影悉皆移動,唯無憂樹影覆太子身,如故不動。又彼園中諸餘華樹,皆悉傾向,大無憂樹,吉祥勝相,悅意可觀。
「時福力太子,夢見自身處穢污上,又見自身穢污所染,又見自以舌舐虛空,又見自身蓮華中立,又見自身上起山峰,又見眾人頂禮於己。太子寤已,隨應占察如上所夢:『如我夢見自身在於穢污上者,我必應居灌頂王位,大富自在,斯為前相。如我所見穢污染身者,我應處於大師子座

His good roots had developed, and he went to the garden with his attendants. When the prince walked, the road was flat, and there were no thorns or gravel anywhere. In the middle of the road, auspicious signs appeared: fine rain scattered in the air, swirling above his head; birds of various colors flew in sequence; young boys and girls made beautiful sounds, jumping and running, all feeling joyful; everyone's body hair stood on end, and they all felt light and at ease. They also heard pleasant words in the air. When the prince saw these signs, he thought: 'These signs appear, I will surely inherit the coronation throne.' With this thought, he entered the garden and enjoyed all kinds of blessings. There was a large Ashoka tree in the garden, with flourishing flowers. The prince slept peacefully there. The others who went with him, because they liked the flowers and fruits, each wandered around the garden. The dragon king then slowly placed the prince on the lotus with his divine power; at that time, the prince felt nothing at all. Thus, the time for eating gradually passed, and it was noon. The shadows of all the other trees had moved, but only the shadow of the Ashoka tree covered the prince's body, remaining still as before. Moreover, all the other flowering trees in the garden leaned towards the great Ashoka tree, a beautiful and auspicious sight, pleasing to the eye.' 「爾時彼國臣佐,先遣使人周行求訪到彼園中,具見太子次第相續吉祥勝相;心生驚異,此大福力,有大名稱。即時速還,具陳上事。時諸臣佐,聞彼言已,皆生歡喜。即依法儀,悉備所須,行詣園中,授其灌頂,到已見諸吉祥勝相。
「時福力太子,即于微妙大蓮華上,結加趺坐。以福力開發故,四大天王奉天莊嚴大師子座,帝釋天主奉天妙蓋及眾寶拂,忉利諸天奉種種寶嚴飾露幔,散眾寶華如雲而下。四大王天諸天子眾,雨種種寶,奏天微妙可愛音樂,及散妙衣。國中園林,周遍清凈,一切悉無荊棘砂礫。豎立幢幡珠繒交絡,設妙香瓶,散諸異華與天宮等。帝釋天主,敕毗首羯磨天子,普于園林,悉令化出四寶所成廣大樓閣,以備太子隨意受用。時彼臣佐,又觀如是希有勝相,轉復異之,咸各肅恭,虔命太子處師子座,頂禮尊奉,如其法儀,為授灌頂。太子得灌頂已,身出光明,周遍照耀一由旬量,映蔽日光而不顯現。是時眾中,有一類人,見斯光已,咸悉稱言:『此勝光王。』一類人言:『此福力王

'As I see those who climb the peaks, I should always dwell in the highest place everywhere. As I see the multitude bowing to me, I should be respected by them. Such things, carefully observing their signs, I now decide to be the enthroned king.' 'At that time, the ministers of that country first sent messengers to search around and visit that garden, where they saw in detail the auspicious and excellent signs of the prince in succession; they were amazed in their hearts, this great power of merit, possessing such a great reputation. They immediately returned quickly and reported the above matters in detail. At that time, when the ministers heard these words, they were all very happy. They immediately prepared everything needed according to the rituals, went to the garden, and performed the enthronement ceremony for the prince, and upon arrival, they saw all kinds of auspicious and excellent signs.' 'At that time, Prince Fukuli, sat in the lotus position on a wonderful great lotus flower. Because of the development of his merit, the Four Heavenly Kings offered a magnificent lion throne of heavenly adornment, the Lord of the Devas, Indra, offered a wonderful heavenly canopy and various jeweled whisks, the devas of Trayastrimsa offered canopies decorated with various treasures, and scattered various jeweled flowers like clouds. The sons of the Four Great King Heavens rained down various treasures, played wonderful and lovely heavenly music, and scattered exquisite garments. The gardens in the country were clean and pure everywhere, without any thorns or gravel. Banners and streamers were erected, with pearls and silks intertwined, exquisite incense bottles were placed, and various exotic flowers were scattered, like the heavenly palace. The Lord of the Devas, Indra, ordered the son of Vishvakarman to transform the gardens into vast pavilions made of four treasures, for the prince to use as he pleased. At that time, the ministers, seeing such rare and excellent sights, were even more amazed, and they all respectfully and solemnly invited the prince to ascend the lion throne, bowing and honoring him, and according to the rituals, performed the enthronement ceremony for the prince. After the prince was enthroned, his body emitted light, illuminating an area of one yojana around him, obscuring the sunlight so that it could not be seen. 「時福力王,從師子座歡喜而下,致敬問訊,如應施設高廣之座,命彼諸兄次第而坐。諸兄即令王複本座。眾坐已定,作諸供獻。如先所論,互談議已,皆生決定歡喜之心。時王起尊重意,各以所奉。如是集會過二三日,王為諸兄及彼人眾開發,令知福非福事,說伽陀曰:
「『無福者墮地獄中, 受大苦惱常無間; 或墮餓鬼或畜生, 受飢渴苦及負重。 無福之者壞其身, 無福為奴重疲極, 無福墮于聾啞中, 無福愚鈍多邪慧

Like a calf that always gets milk from its mother, the blessed can fulfill all their wishes and desires. Like the wish-fulfilling tree, which is pleasing to behold, they always obtain all the fruits they desire. The blessed are able to possess the power of patience and obtain great auspiciousness that brings joy. Their faith is deep and firm, and they can be relied upon and followed. In every life, they possess beautiful appearances. The blessed spread their good reputation far and wide, and they possess extensive knowledge and wisdom. Those who see them will develop a heart of love and joy, and they will also gain the ability to remember everything they hear. The blessed have no illness at the time of their death, and they will also depart with joy. Extremely evil scenes will not appear, and they will be far from fear and suffering. The blessed will enjoy heavenly bliss at the time of their death, and heavenly palaces and pavilions will appear before them. The gods of Trayastrimsa and Yama heavens will come to welcome them. The princes of Tushita heaven and the heavenly beings of Nirmanarati heaven will also do the same. The gods of Paranirmitavasavartin heaven will all come to protect the blessed. The blessed are like the Great Brahma King, and countless heavenly beings respect and serve them. In the thousand Brahma realms where they reside, they are vast, noble, and free. Everything the blessed do will be successful, and they will always be in a state of happiness. All beings will develop a heart of love and joy for them, and even the external environment will not harm them. At this time, the brothers and their people, after hearing these verses, were all convinced and very happy with the King of Blessed Power. They clearly knew that whether in this life or the next, the power of blessings is the most supreme.

「複次其後諸小國王,聞是事已,咸起思念:『彼王有大福力,具大名稱,我今宜應往彼尊奉。』由是諸王共會一處,各領四兵,所謂象、馬、車、步兵眾,同詣福力王所,下車前進,肅恭伸拜,合掌白言:『天子大福,具大名稱,為大國王,威德特尊,我等今時故來親奉。』
「時福力王,即復致問,普為慰安,如次坐已,並其官屬,各與無價上妙珍寶;又以十善法門,普為攝化。是時諸王,俱獲勝利,各還本國。

「複次福力王,以至極盡閻浮提界都統王政,國富自在,威德特尊。一切人民,王悉周給珍寶財物,以十善法普為化導。時閻浮提人民,熾盛安隱快樂,息諸斗諍,卻除他敵,悉無盜賊饑饉疾疫,亦無貧窮癃殘之者。皆有財寶庫藏充滿,眷屬廣多如意自在。又復一切方處,自然除去荊棘砂礫。時令不愆,雨澤溥潤,華果茂盛,稼穡豐阜。人民咸知福力增勝,常行佈施作諸福事,潔己清心,修持戒行。閻浮提人命終皆生四大王天;其福力王廣為無數人眾開發善根,現世他生作大利益,有無數千人命終得生兜率天上。」
佛告諸苾芻:「汝等當知,彼福力王者豈異人乎?即我身是,我于爾時居菩薩位。福力王父眼力王者,今凈飯王是。廣照後者,今摩耶夫人是。色相具足童子者,今阿難苾芻是。精進具足童子者,今聞二百億苾芻是。工巧具足童子者,今阿泥樓馱苾芻是。智慧具足童子者,今舍利子苾芻是

'Having spoken, he immediately removed his own jeweled crown and placed it on his son's head. The son, following his father's instructions, also took charge of the kingdom.' The seasons were regular, the rain was abundant, flowers and fruits flourished, and crops were plentiful. The people all knew that this was the result of increased fortunate power, and they often practiced giving, performed various meritorious deeds, purified themselves, and observed the precepts. The people of Jambudvipa, upon death, were all reborn in the Heaven of the Four Great Kings; King Fortunate Power developed the roots of goodness for countless people, bringing great benefits in this life and the next, and countless thousands of people were reborn in the Tushita Heaven upon death.' 'The Buddha told the bhikshus: 'You should know, is that King Fortunate Power someone else? It is myself. At that time, I was in the position of a Bodhisattva. King Eye Power, the father of King Fortunate Power, is now King Suddhodana. The one who widely illuminates, is now Queen Maya. The boy with perfect features, is now the bhikshu Ananda. The boy with perfect diligence, is now the two hundred billion bhikshus who have heard the teachings. The boy with perfect skill, is now the bhikshu Anuruddha. The boy with perfect wisdom, is now the bhikshu Shariputra.'
。彼時帝釋天主者,今目乾連苾芻是。而彼國王趣命終者,即魔王是。彼貧人者,今羅睺羅苾芻是。彼受治罰善醫業者,今憍陳如苾芻是。諸苾芻!以是緣故當知福力,而諸有情於一切時,應廣修作諸勝行業。故我先說彼福力者,我不見有少法隨修作已多獲義利。」
爾時諸苾芻咸生疑念,俱白佛言:「世尊!彼福力王乃往古世修何行業感是報應,統王諸國具大名稱,威德特尊受天人福,諸有所須于思念間一切如應,自天而降生時地動,空中雨寶降師子座,帝釋奉蓋現寶藏等,是事云何?愿佛開決。」
佛言:「諸苾芻!福力王者,于累生中積修福業,行愿廣大緣力合集,決定如應受勝福報。又諸苾芻!汝等當知,一切有情所作行業,皆非外緣可得,亦非地界、水界、火界、風界所成,若善、不善隨蘊、處、界起諸行業。」即說伽陀曰:
「假使經百劫, 不壞諸業因, 因緣和合時, 有情隨受果。
「諸苾芻!我念過去久遠世時,有佛出世,號無能勝如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。其佛普於世間作佛事已,乃至最後於一國中入無餘依大涅槃界,如薪盡火滅。而彼國王收其舍利,造立寶塔廣大供養
現代漢語譯本:當時的天帝釋,就是現在的目犍連比丘。而那個臨終的國王,就是魔王。那個窮人,就是現在的羅睺羅比丘。那個接受懲罰的善醫,就是現在的憍陳如比丘。各位比丘!因此你們應當知道福報的力量,一切眾生在任何時候,都應該廣泛地修習各種殊勝的善行。所以我先前說過的福報力量,我沒有見到有任何一種法,只要稍微修習就能獲得巨大的利益。 當時,各位比丘都產生了疑惑,一起對佛說:『世尊!那個福力王在過去世修了什麼善行,才感得這樣的果報,統治各個國家,擁有巨大的名聲,威德特別尊貴,享受天人的福報,所有需要的物品,只要一想,一切都如願以償,從天而降,出生時大地震動,空中降下寶物,降下獅子座,帝釋天奉上寶蓋,出現寶藏等等,這是怎麼回事呢?希望佛陀為我們開示。』 佛說:『各位比丘!福力王,在累世中積累修習福業,發願廣大,因緣力量聚合,必定會如願以償地獲得殊勝的福報。還有各位比丘!你們應當知道,一切眾生所作的善惡行為,都不是外在的因緣所能造成的,也不是地界、水界、火界、風界所能形成的,無論是善是惡,都隨著蘊、處、界而產生各種行為。』於是說了偈語: 『即使經過百千劫,所造的業因也不會壞滅,當因緣和合的時候,眾生就會隨之承受果報。』 『各位比丘!我回憶過去久遠世的時候,有佛出世,號為無能勝如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。那位佛在世間普遍地做了佛事之後,乃至最後在一個國家中進入無餘依大涅槃界,就像柴火燒盡,火焰熄滅一樣。而那個國王收集了他的舍利,建造寶塔,廣做供養。
English version: At that time, the Lord Śakra was now the Bhikṣu Maudgalyāyana. And that king who was about to die was the demon king. That poor man was now the Bhikṣu Rāhula. That good physician who received punishment was now the Bhikṣu Kauṇḍinya. Bhikṣus! Therefore, you should know the power of merit, and all sentient beings at all times should extensively cultivate all kinds of superior virtuous actions. Therefore, I said earlier about the power of merit, I have not seen any dharma that, if practiced even slightly, can obtain great benefits. At that time, all the Bhikṣus had doubts and together said to the Buddha: 'World Honored One! What virtuous actions did that King of Merit Power cultivate in past lives to receive such a reward, ruling over various countries, possessing great fame, being especially honored in virtue, enjoying the blessings of gods and humans, and having all his needs fulfilled as soon as he thought of them, descending from the sky, the earth shaking at his birth, treasures raining down from the sky, a lion throne descending, Śakra offering a canopy, and treasures appearing, etc.? How did this happen? We hope the Buddha will explain it to us.' The Buddha said: 'Bhikṣus! The King of Merit Power, in many lifetimes, accumulated and cultivated meritorious deeds, made great vows, and the power of causes and conditions gathered together, so he was destined to receive superior rewards as he wished. Also, Bhikṣus! You should know that all the actions of sentient beings are not caused by external conditions, nor are they formed by the earth element, water element, fire element, or wind element. Whether good or bad, all actions arise according to the aggregates, sense bases, and elements.' Then he spoke a verse: 'Even after hundreds of thousands of kalpas, the causes of karma will not be destroyed. When causes and conditions come together, sentient beings will receive the corresponding results.' 'Bhikṣus! I remember in the distant past, a Buddha appeared in the world, named Unsurpassed Tathāgata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, Vidyācaraṇasaṃpanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā Devamanuṣyāṇāṃ, Buddha, Bhagavān. That Buddha, after universally performing the Buddha's work in the world, finally entered the great Nirvāṇa realm without remainder in one country, like a fire extinguished when the firewood is burned out. And that king collected his relics, built a pagoda, and made extensive offerings.'
。其後諸苾芻眾,鳴于犍椎擊鼓發螺,普告大眾,時苾芻等無數百千人集會一處,彼大法師于吉祥日廣為諸人宣說法要。是時國中有一博戲者,名曰得勝,深著博弈戲玩等事,妻名廣勝,子亦同名。是人先積家財,以博戲故內外財物輸於他人,皆悉散蕩,唯存所著㲲衣二段並常持蓋革屣及五金錢。其人一時忽作是言:『我不造福,因受斯貧苦。』言已吁嘆,持如上物即出其舍,訪求博戲次第。行至說法之所,見大法師處師子座,人眾圍繞合掌聽法。是人睹斯勝相生清凈心,自念:『我今亦此聽法。』即以諸物置於一處,合掌諦誠聽受所說。時彼法師說伽陀曰:
「『人當修作諸福因, 如彼所作勿間斷; 隨其樂欲施作時, 由福藏故獲妙樂。』
「彼人聞是伽陀已,乃思其言:『由福藏故獲妙樂者,我往生中不造福因故受貧苦,我今宜應隨力施作少分福事。』即自惟忖:『我之家財悉已散蕩,而今但有隨身諸物。是中取五金錢及㲲一假若行施者,又慮貧劇致殞身命;若不佈施永壞福因,於他世中而無所託。我今以何方便能離貧苦存活身命,隨修福事不壞勝因?然我今者寧受饑貧必營福事,宜以金錢及㲲衣施

English version: After that, the assembly of monks sounded the ghanṭā, beat the drums, and blew the conch shells, universally announcing to the multitude. At that time, countless hundreds and thousands of monks gathered in one place, and that great Dharma master, on an auspicious day, widely expounded the essentials of the Dharma to the people. At that time, there was a gambler in the country named Desheng, who was deeply addicted to gambling and playing. His wife was named Guang Sheng, and his son had the same name. This person had previously accumulated family wealth, but due to gambling, his internal and external possessions were lost to others, all scattered, leaving only two pieces of felt clothing he was wearing, along with his usual hat, leather shoes, and five copper coins. This person suddenly said, 'I did not create merit, therefore I suffer such poverty.' Having said this, he sighed, took the aforementioned items, and left his house, seeking opportunities for gambling. He arrived at the place where the Dharma was being preached and saw the great Dharma master sitting on the lion throne, surrounded by people who were listening to the Dharma with their palms together. This person, seeing this auspicious sight, generated a pure mind and thought, 'I will also listen to the Dharma here now.' So he placed his belongings in one place, joined his palms, and sincerely listened to what was being said. At that time, the Dharma master spoke a gāthā: 'People should cultivate the causes of all merits, just as they do, without interruption; when they are willing to give and act, they will obtain wonderful joy because of the accumulation of merit.' After hearing this gāthā, that person pondered its meaning: 'Because of the accumulation of merit, one obtains wonderful joy. In my past lives, I did not create the causes of merit, therefore I suffer the pain of poverty. Now I should do my best to perform a small amount of meritorious deeds.' He then thought: 'My family wealth has all been scattered, and now I only have these things with me. If I take five copper coins and one piece of felt to give as alms, I worry that extreme poverty will lead to my death; if I do not give alms, I will forever cut off the cause of merit, and in future lives, I will have no support. What method can I use now to both escape poverty and preserve my life, while also cultivating meritorious deeds and not destroying the auspicious causes? However, I would rather endure hunger and poverty now and definitely engage in meritorious deeds. I should give away the copper coins and the felt clothing.'
。』作是念時,而彼法師又說伽陀曰:
「『善法應當速疾修, 即能息除諸罪業; 如是宜修勝福因, 一切罪業非所樂。』
「彼人復聞是伽陀已,審思其言『善法速修』,斯為決定,由是發起清凈施心,以所持蓋覆法師頂,取其革屣安師足下,散五金錢布于座側,舉㲲衣段被法師身。心大歡喜身毛皆豎,頂禮雙足益生凈信,發是愿言:『愿我以此為法佈施最上善根,此生已往,生生有大殊勝福力,具大名稱,受天人福,威德特尊統王諸國,若有所須應念即現,勝相出生獲無盡藏。』其發如是廣大愿已,時彼法師即為如應迴向功德。是時博戲者出離眾會,唯存一衣以覆其身,還復其舍。時妻及子見已驚異,念前所持諸物出外,應為博戲之所散蕩。妻故問言:『仁者!舍中但存我及於子,余無所有,豈非我等將亦壞邪?』彼人由是轉增逼迫受貧窮苦,自省斯緣,說伽陀曰:
「『世間何苦勝貧苦, 而貧苦與死苦同; 寧當死苦尚甘心, 彼貧窮苦不愛樂。』
「說是伽陀已,吁嘆而住

English version: As he thought this, that Dharma master then spoke a verse: 'Good deeds should be cultivated quickly, which can eliminate all karmic offenses; One should cultivate the cause of superior blessings, all karmic offenses are not desirable.' After hearing this verse, that person carefully considered the words 'good deeds should be cultivated quickly,' believing it to be a definite truth. Thus, he generated a pure mind of giving, using the cover he was holding to cover the Dharma master's head, placing his own shoes under the master's feet, scattering five gold coins beside the seat, and draping a woolen garment over the Dharma master's body. His heart was filled with great joy, his body hair stood on end, he bowed at the master's feet, and his pure faith grew even stronger. He made a vow, saying: 'May I, with this act of giving as the supreme root of good for the Dharma, in this life and in all future lives, have great and extraordinary blessings, possess great renown, enjoy the blessings of gods and humans, be especially honored in power and virtue, rule over all countries, and if there is anything needed, it will appear as soon as it is thought of, be born with auspicious marks, and obtain inexhaustible treasures.' After making such a vast vow, the Dharma master then appropriately dedicated the merit to him. At this time, the gambler left the gathering, with only one garment to cover his body, and returned home. His wife and children were astonished to see this, thinking that the things he had taken out earlier must have been lost in gambling. His wife then asked him: 'You! There is only me and the child left in the house, nothing else. Are we also going to suffer?' That person, because of this, felt even more pressured and suffered the pain of poverty. Reflecting on the cause of this, he spoke a verse: 'What suffering in the world is greater than the suffering of poverty, and the suffering of poverty is the same as the suffering of death; I would rather endure the suffering of death willingly, the suffering of poverty is truly undesirable.' After speaking this verse, he sighed and stopped.
。其後一時,彼妻持瓶詣井以汲,雖復下徹得水,其力不能出之;妻乃召夫令觀是事,其夫即時同力而舉,亦不能出;又呼其子,三人相與悍勇勞力方能小舉;怪而視之,乃見其下有五鐵甕,滿盛黃金聯接排置。夫先見已驚異思念,豈非先施今獲其果?熙怡瞻視,說伽陀曰:
「『奇哉功德現此處, 一切過失悉蠲除; 今所得由先種生, 施者果報知如是。』
「是時彼妻歡喜問言:『仁者!勝相如是,善語若斯,其故何邪?』夫為如應廣說其事。
「複次后時彼得勝博戲者,福力開發現獲斯果,由是展轉遍流聲譽,國中人民互相謂言:『奇哉希有殊特大福,忽然能獲大富自在。』彼人從是已後向佛法僧,倍勝於前極生凈信,日日于佛塔所廣大供養。復于正法聽受修習,又以上味飲食日供凈眾及余沙門、婆羅門、孤露乞人,亦復隨應供給所須悉令滿足。又復廣營精舍,令彼四方苾芻居止承事供養,由是名聞流佈城邑。其後彼國王忽命終無紹繼者,時諸臣佐親屬,審知是人有大福力具大名稱,共議勤請紹其王位。時博戲者即隱本名,人皆稱謂得勝大王

They then called their son, and the three of them together, with great effort, managed to lift the bottle up a little. They were surprised and looked closely, only to find that there were five iron urns at the bottom of the well, filled with gold, connected and arranged in a row. The husband, upon seeing this, was both astonished and thoughtful, wondering if this was the result of his past generosity. He looked on with joy and spoke a verse: 'How marvelous, merit manifests here, all faults are eliminated; what is obtained today is born from past good causes, the result of giving is known to be like this.' At this time, his wife happily asked, 'Kind sir! This auspicious sight is like this, and these virtuous words are like this, what is the reason?' The husband then truthfully and in detail explained the matter. Later, he also won in gambling, and the power of his merit manifested, and he received such a reward. Because of this, his reputation spread throughout the country, and the people in the country said to each other, 'How marvelous and rare, such great and special fortune, to suddenly obtain such great wealth and freedom.' From then on, this person's faith in the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha was even stronger than before, and he made extensive offerings at the stupa every day. He also listened to and practiced the Dharma, and every day he used the best food to make offerings to the Sangha, as well as other shramanas, Brahmins, orphans, and beggars, and he also provided for their needs, ensuring they were all satisfied. He also extensively built monasteries, allowing monks from all directions to reside, serve, and make offerings, and thus his fame spread throughout the city. Later, the king suddenly passed away without an heir. The ministers and relatives, knowing that this person had great merit and a great reputation, discussed together and earnestly requested him to inherit the throne. At this time, the gambler concealed his original name, and people all called him King 'Victorious'.

「時得勝王現獲如是悅意果報,起猛利心,勝前佈施,作諸福事,修持戒行,其王普為臣佐、親屬、一切人民開發福因已,后趣命終即生他化自在天,為彼天王之子。生彼天時有諸上妙悅意珍寶,及眾衣飾自空而降,身有光明映彼天眾光明不現,彼天見已咸皆驚歎,希有勝福果報若斯。」
佛告諸苾芻言:「汝等當知,彼得勝王者豈異人乎?即先所說福力王是。彼時初為博戲之者,能發喜心愛樂聽法,竭其所有以施法師,故於現生獲勝果報,紹繼王位開發福因;由此因緣,二十六生為他化自在天王;三十六生為化樂天王;三十六生為兜率天王;三十六生為夜摩天王;三十六生為忉利天王;三十六生為四大王天主;無數百生為金輪王;正法統化於四天下,七寶具足:所謂輪寶、象寶、馬寶、珠寶、女寶、主藏神寶、主兵神寶,如是七寶隨意受用。復有千子,最上色相,勇健精進能伏他軍,極海邊際大地境界,悉無盜賊刀杖等怖,咸修正法安隱而住。」
爾時世尊,為諸苾芻說伽陀曰:
「大士如是諸勝因, 多生得為勝主宰; 由佛普攝於世間, 此是諸佛之所說
現代漢語譯本:'當時得勝王獲得瞭如此令人愉悅的果報,生起了強烈的信心,比之前更加慷慨地佈施,做了各種善事,修行戒律。這位國王普遍地為臣子、親屬和所有人民開示了福德的因緣之後,壽命終結后就轉生到他化自在天,成為那裡的天王之子。當他出生在那個天界時,有各種上等的、令人愉悅的珍寶和眾多的衣飾從空中降落,他身上散發的光芒使得其他天眾的光芒都黯然失色。那些天人看到后都驚歎不已,感嘆如此稀有殊勝的福報。' '佛陀告訴各位比丘說:『你們應當知道,那位得勝王難道是別人嗎?他就是之前所說的福力王。他當時最初只是一個賭博的人,能夠生起歡喜心,喜愛聽聞佛法,竭盡所有來供養法師,因此在今生獲得了殊勝的果報,繼承了王位,開示了福德的因緣;由於這個因緣,他有二十六世轉生為他化自在天的天王;三十六世轉生為化樂天的天王;三十六世轉生為兜率天的天王;三十六世轉生為夜摩天的天王;三十六世轉生為忉利天的天王;三十六世轉生為四大王天的天主;無數百世轉生為金輪王,以正法統治四天下,七寶具足:即輪寶、象寶、馬寶、珠寶、女寶、主藏神寶、主兵神寶,這七寶可以隨意享用。他還有一千個兒子,都具有最上等的容貌,勇猛健壯,能夠降伏敵軍,整個大海邊際的大地疆域,都沒有盜賊和刀劍等恐怖,都奉行正法,安穩地居住。』' '當時,世尊為各位比丘說了偈頌:' '大士如此種種殊勝因,多生得為殊勝之主宰;由佛普遍攝受於世間,這是諸佛所宣說的。'
English version: 'At that time, King 'Victorious' obtained such a pleasing reward. He generated a strong faith, gave more generously than before, performed various meritorious deeds, and practiced the precepts. This king, having universally revealed the causes of merit to his ministers, relatives, and all the people, after his life ended, was reborn in the Paranirmitavasavartin heaven, becoming the son of the king of that heaven. When he was born in that heaven, various superior and pleasing treasures and numerous ornaments descended from the sky. The light emanating from his body caused the light of the other heavenly beings to dim. Upon seeing this, those heavenly beings were amazed and exclaimed at such a rare and extraordinary reward of merit.' 'The Buddha told the monks, 『You should know, is that King 'Victorious' someone else? He is the King 'Power of Merit' mentioned earlier. At that time, he was initially just a gambler, but he was able to generate a joyful mind, love to hear the Dharma, and give all that he had to the Dharma teacher. Therefore, in this life, he obtained a superior reward, inherited the throne, and revealed the causes of merit. Because of this cause, he was reborn as the king of the Paranirmitavasavartin heaven for twenty-six lives; as the king of the Nirmanarati heaven for thirty-six lives; as the king of the Tusita heaven for thirty-six lives; as the king of the Yama heaven for thirty-six lives; as the king of the Trayastrimsa heaven for thirty-six lives; as the lord of the Four Heavenly Kings for thirty-six lives; and as a golden wheel-turning king for countless hundreds of lives. He ruled the four continents with the righteous Dharma, possessing the seven treasures: the wheel treasure, the elephant treasure, the horse treasure, the jewel treasure, the woman treasure, the treasure of the minister of the treasury, and the treasure of the minister of the army. He could use these seven treasures at will. He also had a thousand sons, all with the most superior appearances, brave and vigorous, able to subdue enemy armies. The entire land to the edge of the great sea was free from thieves, weapons, and other fears. They all practiced the righteous Dharma and lived in peace.』' 'At that time, the World Honored One spoke the following verses for the monks:' 'Such are the superior causes of a great being, in many lives he becomes a superior ruler; because the Buddha universally embraces the world, this is what all the Buddhas have proclaimed.'
。 若得聞是希有事, 及此神通廣大緣, 造黑業者尚信生, 誰諸智者不開覺? 是故如是大希有, 大威德者隨所求; 應當尊重正法門, 復常思念諸佛教。」
佛告諸苾芻:「如我所說,汝等應當如是修學,是故常勤愛樂正法,尊重恭敬信奉供養,如是作已為所依止,如是學者得大利益。」
佛說此經已,諸苾芻等聞佛所說,皆大歡喜,信受奉行
現代漢語譯本:如果能夠聽聞這樣稀有的事情,以及這種神通廣大的因緣,即使是造作惡業的人也會因此生起信心,那麼哪位有智慧的人不會因此開悟覺醒呢?所以,像這樣的大稀有事,具有大威德的人能夠隨其所求而滿足;我們應當尊重正法之門,並且常常思念諸佛的教誨。 佛陀告訴各位比丘:『正如我所說的,你們應當這樣修學,所以要常常勤勉地愛樂正法,尊重、恭敬、信奉、供養它,這樣做了之後才能有所依止,像這樣學習的人才能獲得大利益。』 佛陀說完這部經后,各位比丘聽聞佛陀所說,都非常歡喜,信受奉行。
English version: If one can hear of such rare events, and the great karmic connections of such spiritual powers, even those who have committed dark deeds will develop faith. Who among the wise would not awaken to enlightenment? Therefore, such great rarities, those with great virtue can fulfill whatever they seek; we should respect the gate of the true Dharma, and constantly contemplate the teachings of all Buddhas. The Buddha told the monks, 'As I have said, you should practice in this way. Therefore, you should always diligently love the true Dharma, respect, revere, believe in, and make offerings to it. By doing so, you will have a foundation to rely on, and those who learn in this way will gain great benefits.' After the Buddha finished speaking this sutra, all the monks, having heard what the Buddha said, were greatly delighted, and accepted and practiced it.
