如是我聞:

一時,佛住王舍城迦蘭陀竹園,與千二百五十比丘百菩薩俱。

爾時,眾中有一菩薩比丘,名婆須蜜多,游竹園間緣樹上下,聲如猿猴,或捉三鈴作那羅戲。時,諸長者及行路人競集看之,眾人集時,身到空中,跳上樹端作獼猴聲。耆阇崛山八萬四千金色獼猴集菩薩所,菩薩復作種種變現令其歡喜。時,諸大眾各作是言:「沙門釋子猶如戲兒,幻惑眾人,所行惡事無人信用,乃與鳥獸作于非法。」如是惡聲遍王舍城。

有一梵志,上啟大王頻婆娑羅,白言大王:「沙門釋子作諸非法,乃與鳥獸作那羅戲。」王聞此語,嫌諸釋子,即敕長者迦蘭陀曰:「此諸釋子多聚獼猴,在卿園中為作何等?如來知不?」長者啟王:「婆須蜜多作變化事,令諸獼猴一切歡喜,諸天雨花持用供養,為作何等,臣所不知。」

爾時,大王頻婆娑羅,駕乘名象,前後導從往詣佛所

一時,佛住在王舍城的迦蘭陀竹園,與一千二百五十位比丘和一百位菩薩在一起。

當時,大眾中有一位菩薩比丘,名叫婆須蜜多,在竹園中游走,攀緣樹木上下,發出像猿猴一樣的聲音,有時拿著三個鈴鐺做那羅戲。當時,許多長者和路人爭相觀看。當衆人聚集時,他身體升到空中,跳到樹頂上發出獼猴的聲音。耆阇崛山的八萬四千只金色獼猴聚集到菩薩那裡,菩薩又做出各種變化讓他們歡喜。當時,大眾各自說道:『沙門釋子就像戲耍的孩童,迷惑眾人,所做惡事無人相信,竟然和鳥獸做非法之事。』這樣的惡聲傳遍了王舍城。

有一位婆羅門,上奏頻婆娑羅王,稟告大王:『沙門釋子做各種非法之事,竟然和鳥獸做那羅戲。』國王聽到這話,對釋子感到不滿,就命令長者迦蘭陀說:『這些釋子聚集了許多獼猴,在你的園中做什麼?如來知道嗎?』長者稟告國王:『婆須蜜多做變化之事,讓所有獼猴都歡喜,諸天降下花雨供養,他們做什麼,臣也不知道。』

當時,頻婆娑羅王駕著名象,前後有侍從引導,前往佛陀所在之處。

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Kalanda Bamboo Grove in Rajagriha, together with twelve hundred and fifty bhikshus and one hundred bodhisattvas.

At that time, among the assembly was a bodhisattva bhikshu named Vasumitra, who was wandering in the bamboo grove, climbing up and down the trees, making sounds like a monkey, and sometimes playing the Narala game with three bells. At that time, many elders and passersby gathered to watch. When the crowd gathered, his body rose into the air, and he jumped to the top of the trees, making monkey sounds. Eighty-four thousand golden monkeys from Mount Gridhrakuta gathered at the bodhisattva's place, and the bodhisattva made various transformations to make them happy. At that time, the assembly each said: 'The Shramana Shakya's disciples are like playful children, deceiving the people, doing evil deeds that no one believes, and actually doing unlawful things with birds and beasts.' Such evil rumors spread throughout Rajagriha.

There was a Brahmin who reported to King Bimbisara, saying to the king: 'The Shramana Shakya's disciples are doing all sorts of unlawful things, actually playing the Narala game with birds and beasts.' When the king heard this, he was displeased with the Shakya's disciples, and he ordered the elder Kalanda, saying: 'These Shakya's disciples have gathered many monkeys, what are they doing in your garden? Does the Tathagata know?' The elder reported to the king: 'Vasumitra is performing transformations, making all the monkeys happy, and the devas are raining down flowers as offerings. What they are doing, your subject does not know.'

At that time, King Bimbisara rode his famous elephant, with attendants leading the way, and went to where the Buddha was.

。到迦蘭陀竹園,即便下象,遙見世尊在重閣上,身紫金色方身丈六坐七寶花,三十二相八十種好,皆放光明如紫金山;處炎火中金光圍繞,普令大眾同於金色,尊者婆須蜜多,及八萬四千獼猴亦作金色。

時,諸獼猴見大王來,或歌、或舞、擊鼓、吹貝作種種變。中有采花奉上王者,大王見已,與諸大眾俱至佛所,為佛作禮右繞三匝,卻坐一面,白佛言:「世尊!此諸獼猴宿有何福身作金色?復有何罪生畜生中?尊者婆須蜜多,復宿殖何福,生長者家,信家非家出家學道?復有何罪,雖生人中,諸根具足不持戒行,與諸獼猴共為伴侶。歌語之聲悉如獼猴,使諸外道戲笑我等?唯愿天尊,慈哀我等,分別演說令得開解。」

佛告大王:「諦聽,諦聽!善思念之!吾當為汝分別解說。乃往過去無量億劫,過是之前有佛出世,名曰然燈,十號具足。彼佛滅后,有諸比丘,于山澤中修行佛法,具阿練若十二頭陀,堅持禁戒如人護眼,因是即得阿羅漢道,三明、六通、具八解脫。時空澤中有一獼猴,至羅漢所,見於羅漢坐禪入定,即取羅漢坐具,披作袈裟,如沙門法偏袒右肩,手擎香爐繞比丘行。時,彼比丘從禪定覺,見此獼猴有好善心,即為彈指告獼猴言:『法子!汝今應發無上道心

English version: They arrived at the Karanda Bamboo Grove, and the king, having dismounted from his elephant, saw from afar the World Honored One on a high pavilion. His body was a purplish-gold color, his square frame was sixteen feet tall, and he sat upon a seven-jeweled lotus flower. He possessed the thirty-two marks and eighty minor characteristics, all emitting light like a purple-gold mountain. He was surrounded by golden light within the flames, causing all the assembly to appear golden, including the Venerable Vasumitra and the eighty-four thousand monkeys. At that time, when the monkeys saw the great king coming, some sang, some danced, some beat drums, and some blew conch shells, making all sorts of transformations. Among them, some monkeys picked flowers to offer to the king. Upon seeing this, the great king, along with the assembly, went to the Buddha, bowed to him, circumambulated him three times to the right, and then sat to one side. He said to the Buddha, 'World Honored One! What merit did these monkeys accumulate in their past lives to have golden bodies? And what sins did they commit to be born as animals? What merit did the Venerable Vasumitra accumulate in his past lives to be born into a wealthy family, leave home, and study the Way? And what sins did he commit that, although born as a human with all his faculties, he does not uphold the precepts and instead keeps company with these monkeys? Their singing and speaking voices are all like monkeys, causing the outsiders to mock and laugh at us. We beseech the Heavenly Honored One to have compassion on us and explain these matters so that we may be enlightened.' The Buddha told the great king, 'Listen carefully, listen carefully! Think well on this! I will explain it to you in detail. In the immeasurable eons of the past, before that time, there was a Buddha who appeared in the world named Dipankara, who possessed the ten titles. After that Buddha passed away, there were some monks who practiced the Dharma in the mountains and marshes, fulfilling the twelve dhuta practices of the aranya, upholding the precepts as if protecting their own eyes. Because of this, they attained the path of Arhat, possessing the three insights, six supernormal powers, and eight liberations. At that time, in the empty marsh, there was a monkey who came to the Arhat. Seeing the Arhat sitting in meditation, the monkey took the Arhat's seat, draped it over himself like a robe, and, like a Shramana, bared his right shoulder, holding a censer and walking around the monk. At that time, the monk awoke from his meditation and, seeing that this monkey had a good heart, snapped his fingers and said to the monkey, 'Dharma son! You should now arouse the unsurpassed mind of enlightenment.'

。』獼猴聞說,歡喜踴躍,五體投地,敬禮比丘,起復採花散比丘上。

「爾時,比丘即為獼猴說三歸依,告言:『法子!汝今隨學三世佛法,應當求請受三歸依,及以五戒。』爾時,獼猴即起,合掌白言:『大德!憶念我今欲歸依佛、法、僧。』比丘告言:『汝當歸依佛、歸依法、歸依僧。』第二、第三亦如是說:『歸依佛竟、歸依法竟、歸依僧竟。』第二、第三亦如是說:『次當懺悔。』告獼猴言:『汝於前身無量劫來,貪慾、瞋恚、愚癡、邪見、嫉妒、憍慢、誹謗、破戒,作諸惡事滿足十惡。作五逆罪謗方等經、淫比丘尼、偷僧祇物、作眾重罪無量無邊,我今生分已盡,不受後有。大阿羅漢能除眾生無量重罪。所以者何?我初生時與大悲俱生,三世賢聖法皆如是,亦與大悲俱共生世。』如是慇勤,三為獼猴說出罪懺悔。既懺悔已,告獼猴言:『法子!汝今清凈是名布薩,汝從今日至盡形壽,受不殺戒。三世諸佛諸阿羅漢,永不殺生,身口意凈,汝亦如是。』

「爾時,獼猴白羅漢言:『我願作佛,隨大德語,從於今日乃至成佛,終不殺生。』是時,羅漢聞獼猴語,身心歡喜即授五戒:『法子!汝從今日至盡形壽,隨學佛法。三世諸佛、諸聲聞眾,身業清凈,常不殺生,持不殺戒

獼猴聽到這話,歡喜雀躍,五體投地,向比丘行禮,然後起身採摘鮮花散在比丘身上。 當時,比丘就為獼猴宣說了三皈依,並告訴它:『法子!你現在要學習三世諸佛的佛法,應當請求受持三皈依以及五戒。』當時,獼猴立刻起身,合掌說道:『大德!我記得我現在想要皈依佛、法、僧。』比丘告訴它:『你應當皈依佛、皈依法、皈依僧。』第二遍、第三遍也這樣說:『皈依佛完畢、皈依法完畢、皈依僧完畢。』第二遍、第三遍也這樣說:『接下來應當懺悔。』比丘告訴獼猴說:『你於前世無量劫以來,貪慾、嗔恚、愚癡、邪見、嫉妒、驕慢、誹謗、破戒,做了各種惡事,滿足了十惡。犯了五逆罪,誹謗方等經典、姦淫比丘尼、偷盜僧眾的財物,做了無數無邊的重罪。我今生已經到了盡頭,不再受後世的果報。大阿羅漢能夠消除眾生無量的重罪。這是為什麼呢?因為我初生時就與大悲心一同產生,三世的賢聖之法都是如此,也與大悲心一同降生於世。』就這樣慇勤地,三次為獼猴宣說出罪懺悔。懺悔完畢后,告訴獼猴說:『法子!你現在清凈了,這叫做布薩。你從今天起直到壽命終結,受持不殺生戒。三世諸佛、諸阿羅漢,永遠不殺生,身口意清凈,你也應當如此。』 當時,獼猴對羅漢說:『我願意成佛,遵從大德的話,從今天起直到成佛,終究不殺生。』這時,羅漢聽到獼猴的話,身心歡喜,就為它授了五戒:『法子!你從今天起直到壽命終結,隨順學習佛法。三世諸佛、諸聲聞眾,身業清凈,常常不殺生,持守不殺生戒。

The monkey, hearing this, rejoiced and leaped for joy, prostrating itself with all five limbs to the ground, paying homage to the monk, and then rising to gather flowers and scatter them upon the monk. At that time, the monk then explained the Three Refuges to the monkey, and told it: 'Dharma child! You should now study the Dharma of the Buddhas of the three times, and should request to receive the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts.' At that time, the monkey immediately rose, put its palms together, and said: 'Great Virtue! I remember that I now wish to take refuge in the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.' The monk told it: 'You should take refuge in the Buddha, take refuge in the Dharma, and take refuge in the Sangha.' The second and third times were also said in this way: 'Taking refuge in the Buddha is complete, taking refuge in the Dharma is complete, taking refuge in the Sangha is complete.' The second and third times were also said in this way: 'Next, you should repent.' The monk told the monkey: 'In your past lives, for countless kalpas, you have been greedy, hateful, foolish, had wrong views, been jealous, arrogant, slanderous, and broken precepts, committing all kinds of evil deeds, fulfilling the ten evils. You have committed the five rebellious acts, slandered the Vaipulya Sutras, committed adultery with nuns, stolen the property of the Sangha, and committed countless heavy sins. My present life has come to an end, and I will not receive future retribution. The great Arhats are able to eliminate the immeasurable heavy sins of sentient beings. Why is this? Because when I was first born, I was born with great compassion, and the Dharma of the sages of the three times is all like this, also being born into the world with great compassion.' In this way, earnestly, he explained the repentance of sins to the monkey three times. After the repentance was completed, he told the monkey: 'Dharma child! You are now pure, this is called Uposatha. From today until the end of your life, observe the precept of not killing. The Buddhas and Arhats of the three times never kill, their body, speech, and mind are pure, and you should be like this as well.' At that time, the monkey said to the Arhat: 'I wish to become a Buddha, and following the words of the Great Virtue, from today until I become a Buddha, I will never kill.' At this time, the Arhat, hearing the monkey's words, was joyful in body and mind, and then bestowed the Five Precepts upon it: 'Dharma child! From today until the end of your life, follow and study the Buddha's Dharma. The Buddhas and the assembly of Sravakas of the three times, their bodily actions are pure, they never kill, and they uphold the precept of not killing.'

。汝亦如是,至盡形壽持不殺戒,能受持不?』獼猴答言:『我能奉持。』次受不盜、不邪淫、不妄語、不飲酒,亦如上法。既受戒已,時阿羅漢告言:『汝當發願,汝是畜生,現身障道,但勤精進求阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。』

「爾時,獼猴發願已竟,踴躍歡喜走上高山,緣樹舞戲,墜地而死。由阿羅漢受五戒故,破畜生業,命終即生兜率天上。值遇一生補處菩薩,菩薩為說無上道心,即持天花下空澤中供養羅漢。羅漢見之,即便微笑告言:『天王!善惡之報,如影隨形,終不相舍。』時,阿羅漢而說偈言:

「『業能莊嚴身,  處處隨趣趣, 不失法如券,  業如負財人。 汝今生天上,  由於五戒業, 前身落獼猴,  從於犯戒性。 持戒生天梯,  破戒為濩湯, 我見持戒人,  光明莊嚴身。 七寶妙臺閣,  諸天為給使, 眾寶為床帳,  摩尼花瓔珞, 值遇未來佛,  娛樂說勝法。 我見破戒人,  墮在泥犁中, 鐵犁耕其舌,  臥在鐵床上, 融銅四面流,  燒煮壞其身; 或處於刀山,  劍林及沸屎, 灰河寒冰獄,  鐵丸飲融銅, 如是等苦事,  常為身瓔珞

English version: 'You should also do the same, until the end of your life, uphold the precept of not killing. Can you accept and uphold it?' The monkey replied, 'I can uphold it.' Then it received the precepts of not stealing, not committing sexual misconduct, not lying, and not drinking alcohol, also in the same manner as above. After receiving the precepts, the Arhat at that time told it, 'You should make a vow. You are currently an animal, and this status is an obstacle to the path of cultivation, but you must diligently strive to seek Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi (supreme enlightenment).' At that time, after the monkey had made its vow, it joyfully ran up the high mountain, danced and played in the trees, and as a result, fell from the tree and died. Because the Arhat had given it the five precepts, it broke the karmic retribution of being an animal, and immediately after death, it was reborn in the Tushita Heaven. There, it encountered a Bodhisattva who was in the position of a future Buddha. The Bodhisattva explained the supreme Bodhi mind to it, and it then took celestial flowers and descended from the sky into the swamp to make offerings to the Arhat. The Arhat saw it and smiled, saying, 'Heavenly King! The retribution of good and evil is like a shadow following the body, and will never be separated.' At that time, the Arhat spoke a verse: 'Karma adorns the body, following you everywhere you go, the law is not lost like a contract, karma is like a person burdened with debt. You are now reborn in heaven, due to the karma of upholding the five precepts. In your previous life, you fell as a monkey, due to the nature of breaking precepts. Upholding precepts is the ladder to heaven, breaking precepts is like boiling water. I see those who uphold precepts, their bodies radiating light, adorned with splendor. They live in exquisite pavilions made of seven treasures, with devas serving them, using various treasures for beds and curtains, wearing Mani jewels and flower garlands. They will encounter the future Buddha, joyfully listening to the supreme Dharma. I see those who break precepts, falling into hell, their tongues plowed by iron plows, lying on iron beds, with molten copper flowing from all sides, burning their bodies; or being in mountains of knives, forests of swords, and boiling excrement, suffering in the ash river, the cold ice hell, swallowing iron balls, drinking molten copper. Such painful things often become their adornments.'

。 若欲脫眾難,  不墮三惡道, 游處天人路,  超越得涅槃, 當勤持凈戒,  佈施修凈命。』

「時,阿羅漢說此偈已,默然無聲。獼猴天子言曰:『大德!我前身時,作何罪業生獼猴中?復有何福,值遇大德,得免畜生,生於天上?』羅漢答言:『汝今諦聽!善思念之!乃往過去,此閻浮提有佛出世,名曰寶慧如來、應供、正遍知,十號具足,出現於世。三種示現般涅槃后,于像法中有一比丘,名蓮華藏,多與國王、長者、居士而為親友。邪命諂曲不持戒行,身壞命終以誑惑故,猶如壯士屈申臂頃,落於阿鼻大地獄中;如蓮華敷,其身遍滿十八鬲中。雨熱鐵丸從頂而入,百千猛火及熱鐵輪,從空而下,無量無邊阿鼻地獄壽命一劫,劫盡更生。如是經歷諸大地獄,滿八萬四千劫,從地獄出墮餓鬼中,吞飲融銅啖熱鐵丸。經八萬四千歲從餓鬼出,五百身中恒為牛身。又五百身生駱駝中、又五百身生於豬中、又五百身生於狗中、又五百身生獼猴中,緣前供養持戒比丘,結誓要重,今復遇我,沐浴清化得生天上。持戒比丘即我身是,放逸比丘即汝身是。』

「爾時,獼猴天子聞此語已,心驚毛豎,懺悔前罪即還天上

English version: If one wishes to escape all difficulties, not fall into the three evil paths, to roam the paths of gods and humans, and ultimately transcend birth and death to attain Nirvana, one should diligently uphold pure precepts, practice giving, and cultivate a pure life. At that time, after the Arhat finished speaking this verse, he remained silent. The monkey deva said: 『Great Virtue! What evil karma did I commit in my previous life to be reborn as a monkey? And what merit did I have to encounter Great Virtue, to be able to escape the animal realm and be reborn in the heavens?』 The Arhat replied: 『Now listen carefully! Think well about it! In the distant past, in this Jambudvipa world, a Buddha appeared in the world, named Treasure Wisdom Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksambuddha, possessing all ten titles, appearing in the world. After the Buddha demonstrated Nirvana in three ways, during the Dharma-resemblance period, there was a Bhikkhu named Lotus Treasury, who was often close to kings, elders, and laypeople. He made a living through improper means, was flattering and deceitful, and did not uphold the precepts. After his body broke and his life ended, because of his deception and delusion, in the time it takes for a strong man to bend and stretch his arm, he fell into the Avici Great Hell; his body spread out like a lotus, filling the eighteen hell compartments. Hot iron balls rained down from his head, countless fierce flames and hot iron wheels fell from the sky, the immeasurable and boundless Avici Hell had a lifespan of one kalpa, and when the kalpa ended, he was reborn again. In this way, he went through all the great hells, for a full eighty-four thousand kalpas, and then came out of hell and fell into the realm of hungry ghosts, swallowing molten copper and eating hot iron balls. After eighty-four thousand years, he came out of the hungry ghost realm, and for five hundred lives, he was always reborn as a cow. Then for five hundred lives, he was reborn as a camel, then for five hundred lives as a pig, then for five hundred lives as a dog, then for five hundred lives as a monkey, because of the previous offering to the precept-holding Bhikkhu, he made a deep vow, and now he has met me again, received pure teachings, and was able to be reborn in the heavens. The precept-holding Bhikkhu is me, and the unrestrained Bhikkhu is you.』 At that time, after the monkey deva heard these words, his heart was startled, his hair stood on end, he repented of his previous sins, and then returned to the heavens.

。佛告大王:『彼獼猴者,雖是畜生,一見羅漢受持三歸及以五戒,緣斯功德超越千劫極重惡業,得生天上。值遇一生補處菩薩,從是以後值佛無數,凈修梵行具六波羅蜜,住首楞嚴三昧住不退地。于最後身次彌勒后,當成阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,王名寶光,國土清凈如忉利天。生彼國土諸眾生等,皆行十善具戒無缺,佛號師子月如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。若有眾生聞彼佛名,生生之處,常得遠離畜生之身,除無量劫生死之罪。』」

佛告大王:「欲知彼國師子月佛,今此會中,婆須蜜多比丘是也。」時,頻婆娑羅聞此語已,即起合掌遍體流汗,悲泣雨淚悔過自責,向婆須蜜多頭面著地,接足為禮懺悔前罪。佛告大王:「欲知此等八萬四千金色獼猴,乃是過去拘樓秦佛時,波羅奈國、俱睒彌國,二國之中共有八萬四千比丘尼,行諸非法,與諸白衣通致信命,犯諸重禁莊飾身體,如乾闥婆女無有慚愧,淫為瓔珞,諸犯戒事用為花鬘,豎憍慢幢擊貢高鼓,彈放逸琴贊惡聲歌,狂愚無智如癡獼猴,見好比丘善好有德,視之如賊

English version: The Buddha told King Bimbisara, 『That monkey, although an animal, upon seeing an Arhat receiving the Three Refuges and the Five Precepts, through this merit, transcended the extremely heavy evil karma of a thousand kalpas and was able to ascend to heaven. It encountered a Bodhisattva who was a candidate for Buddhahood, and from then on, it encountered countless Buddhas, purely practiced the Brahma-faring, perfected the Six Paramitas, dwelled in the Shurangama Samadhi, and resided in the state of non-retrogression. In its final life, after Maitreya Buddha, it will attain Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, with the Buddha name of Treasure Light, and its land will be as pure as the Trayastrimsa Heaven. The beings born in that land will all practice the Ten Virtuous Deeds, and their precepts will be complete and without flaw. The Buddha will be named Lion Moon Tathagata, Arhat, Samyak-sambuddha, Vidyā-carana-sampanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Purusa-damya-sarathi, Sasta deva-manusyanam, Buddha, Bhagavan. If any sentient being hears the name of this Buddha, in every life, they will always be able to be free from the body of an animal, and eliminate the sins of countless kalpas of birth and death.』 The Buddha told the King, 『Do you want to know who the Lion Moon Buddha of that land is? It is the Bhikshu Vasumitra in this assembly.』 At that time, King Bimbisara, upon hearing these words, immediately rose, joined his palms, sweated all over his body, wept with sorrow, repented and blamed himself, prostrated himself before Vasumitra, touched his feet in reverence, and repented of his previous sins. The Buddha told the King, 『Do you want to know the origin of these eighty-four thousand golden monkeys? They were the eighty-four thousand Bhikshunis in the past, during the time of Krakucchanda Buddha, in the two countries of Varanasi and Kaushambi. They acted unlawfully, had illicit relations with lay people, violated various serious precepts, adorned their bodies like Gandharva women without shame, used lust as ornaments, used the acts of breaking precepts as garlands, raised the banner of arrogance, beat the drum of pride, played the lute of indulgence, sang evil songs, and were as foolish and ignorant as stupid monkeys. When they saw good Bhikshus who were virtuous, they regarded them as thieves.』

「爾時,彼世有一比丘尼名善安隱,得阿羅漢,三明、六通,具八解脫,到諸比丘尼所,告言:『姊妹!世尊在世常說此偈:

「『「若有比丘尼,  不修行八敬, 此非釋種女,  猶如旃陀羅; 若有比丘尼,  放逸犯八重, 當知是一切,  天人中大賊, 恒處阿鼻獄,  經由十八鬲, 其餘三惡道,  為己園林處, 百千無量劫,  不聞三寶名。 亦啖燒鐵丸,  寒冰抱銅柱, 如是罪畢已,  生於鳩鴿身, 毒蛇與鼠狼,  蜈蚣百足等, 如是諸雜類,  皆應經歷中。」』

「時,諸比丘尼聞阿羅漢比丘尼說此偈已,心懷忿恨,罵詈惡言:『此老獼猴從何處來?惡言妄語,橫說地獄。』時,阿羅漢見諸惡人生不善心,即起慈悲,身升虛空作十八變。時諸惡人見變化已,各脫金環散阿羅漢尼上:『愿我生生身作金色,前所作惡今悉懺悔。唯愿慈哀憐愍我等,受我供養。』時,彼阿羅漢比丘尼,即從空下,受諸惡女種種供養。時諸惡人身壞命終墮阿鼻獄,如蓮花敷遍滿獄中,亦複次第經歷諸餘十八大獄。于諸獄中壽命正等各一大劫,如是展轉九十二劫恒處地獄。從地獄出,五百身中恒為餓鬼

At that time, in that world, there was a bhikkhuni named Shan An Yin, who had attained the state of an Arhat, possessing the three insights, six supernormal powers, and fully equipped with the eight liberations. She went to the other bhikkhunis and told them: 'Sisters! The World Honored One often spoke this verse when he was alive: 'If a bhikkhuni does not practice the eight respects, she is not a daughter of the Shakya clan, but like a Chandala; if a bhikkhuni indulges herself and commits the eight grave offenses, know that she is a great thief among all gods and humans, and will forever be in the Avici hell, experiencing the torment of the eighteen hells. The other three evil realms will be like her own garden. For hundreds of thousands of countless kalpas, she will not hear the name of the Three Jewels. She will also eat red-hot iron balls, and embrace cold copper pillars. After such sins are exhausted, she will be reborn as a dove or pigeon, a poisonous snake or a weasel, a centipede or a millipede, and so on. All such various kinds of beings, she must experience them all.' At that time, when those bhikkhunis heard the Arhat bhikkhuni speak this verse, their hearts were filled with anger, and they cursed and spoke evil words: 'Where did this old monkey come from? Talking nonsense, making up stories about hell.' At that time, the Arhat, seeing that these evil people had given rise to unwholesome thoughts, immediately generated compassion, and her body rose into the air, manifesting eighteen transformations. At that time, those evil people, seeing the transformations, each took off their gold rings and scattered them on the Arhat bhikkhuni: 'May our bodies be golden in every life, and we now repent for all the evil deeds we have done before. We only wish that you will have compassion and pity on us, and accept our offerings.' At that time, that Arhat bhikkhuni came down from the air and accepted the various offerings of those evil women. At that time, those evil people, after their bodies were destroyed and their lives ended, fell into the Avici hell, which was filled with them like blooming lotuses, and they also successively experienced the other eighteen great hells. The lifespan in each hell was exactly equal to one great kalpa, and in this way, they remained in hell for ninety-two kalpas. After coming out of hell, they will be constantly hungry ghosts for five hundred lives.

。從餓鬼出,一千身中常為獼猴,身作金色。大王當知,爾時八萬四千犯戒比丘尼罵羅漢者,今此會中八萬四千諸金色獼猴是也;爾時供養諸惡比丘尼者,今大王是。此諸獼猴因宿習故,持花持香供養大王。爾時污彼比丘尼戒者,今瞿迦梨及王五百黃門是。」佛告大王:「身口意業不可不慎。」爾時,世尊而說偈言:

「戒為甘露藥,  服者不老死, 戒德可恃怙,  福報常隨己。 持戒得安隱,  生處無患難, 亦當見諸佛,  受法得解脫。 破戒墮地獄,  猶如此獼猴, 生處恒卑賤,  地獄苦切己, 大王當諦聽!  止惡修諸善。」

爾時,頻婆娑羅王聞說此偈,對佛懺悔慚愧自責,豁然意解成阿那含。王所將眾八千人,求王出家,王即聽許。佛言:「善來,比丘!」鬚髮自落,袈裟著身,即成沙門。頂禮佛足,未舉頭頃成阿羅漢,三明、六通,具八解脫。王所將餘眾一萬六千人,皆發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心,八萬諸天亦俱發心。八萬四千金色獼猴,聞昔因緣慚愧自責,繞佛千匝向佛懺悔,各各亦發無上菩提心,隨壽長短各自命終,命終之後,當生兜率天值遇彌勒,復更增進得不退轉

English version: Emerging from the realm of hungry ghosts, they are often reborn as golden monkeys for a thousand lifetimes. Great King, you should know that the eighty-four thousand nuns who broke the precepts and insulted the Arhats at that time are now these eighty-four thousand golden monkeys in this assembly; those who made offerings to those evil nuns at that time are you, the Great King, now. These monkeys, due to their past habits, bring flowers and incense to offer to the Great King. Those who defiled the precepts of those nuns at that time are now Kokalika and the five hundred eunuchs under your command.』 The Buddha told the king, 『One must be careful about the actions of body, speech, and mind.』 At that time, the World Honored One spoke this verse: 『Precepts are the nectar of immortality; those who take them will not age or die. The virtue of precepts is reliable; blessings always follow oneself. Upholding precepts brings peace and security; one is born in places free from suffering. One will also see all the Buddhas, receive the Dharma, and attain liberation. Breaking precepts leads to hell, like these monkeys; one is always born in lowly places, and the suffering of hell torments oneself. Great King, you should listen carefully! Stop doing evil and cultivate all good deeds.』 At that time, King Bimbisara, upon hearing this verse, confessed to the Buddha, feeling ashamed and remorseful, and suddenly understood, attaining the Anagami fruit. The eight thousand people brought by the king requested the king's permission to leave home, and the king granted it. The Buddha said, 『Welcome, monks!』 Their hair and beards naturally fell off, and the robes appeared on their bodies, and they immediately became monks. They bowed at the Buddha's feet, and before they raised their heads, they attained the Arhat fruit, possessing the three insights, six supernatural powers, and eight liberations. The remaining sixteen thousand people brought by the king all generated the mind of Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi, and eighty thousand devas also generated this mind. The eighty-four thousand golden monkeys, upon hearing of their past causes, felt ashamed and remorseful, circumambulated the Buddha a thousand times, confessed to the Buddha, and each also generated the supreme Bodhi mind. According to the length of their lives, they each passed away, and after passing away, they will be born in the Tushita Heaven, meet Maitreya, and further advance in their practice, attaining the state of non-retrogression.

爾時,尊者摩訶迦葉見此事已,告諸大眾:「菩薩行凈乃令畜生髮于道心,婆須蜜多尚能如是大為佛事,況余菩薩威德無量。」

時,諸天子、山神、地神、天龍八部,見諸獼猴發菩提心,當生天上得不退轉,心生歡喜,而白佛言:「此諸獼猴幾時當得成佛?」

佛告大眾:「過百萬億那由他阿僧祇恒河沙劫,劫名大光,于彼劫中當得成佛。八萬四千佛次第出世,同共一劫,皆名普金光明王如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。」

時會大眾,聞佛世尊為諸獼猴授菩提記,即脫身上上妙瓔珞,供養如來及比丘僧,異口同音讚歎世尊無量德行:「如來出世,正為此等諸獼猴類。善哉,世尊!獼猴聞法尚得成佛,豈況我等於未來世不成佛耶?」

時會大眾聞佛所說,歡喜奉行,作禮而退

當時,尊者摩訶迦葉看到這件事後,告訴大家:『菩薩的清凈行為能使畜生髮起道心,婆須蜜多尚且能如此大作佛事,更何況其他菩薩的威德是無量的。』 當時,諸天子、山神、地神、天龍八部,看到獼猴們發起了菩提心,將來會生到天上,得到不退轉的果位,心中非常歡喜,就問佛說:『這些獼猴什麼時候能夠成佛呢?』 佛告訴大家:『經過百萬億那由他阿僧祇恒河沙劫,那個劫的名字叫大光,在那個劫中它們將會成佛。八萬四千佛會依次出世,在同一個劫中,都名為普金光明王如來、應供、正遍知、明行足、善逝、世間解、無上士、調御丈夫、天人師、佛、世尊。』 當時在場的大眾,聽到佛世尊為獼猴們授記成佛,就脫下身上最上等的瓔珞,供養如來和比丘僧,異口同聲地讚歎世尊無量的德行:『如來出世,正是爲了這些獼猴之類的眾生。太好了,世尊!獼猴聽聞佛法尚且能夠成佛,難道我們將來會不成佛嗎?』 當時在場的大眾聽了佛所說的話,歡喜地接受並實行,行禮後退下。

At that time, the venerable Mahākāśyapa, having seen this, said to the assembly: 'The pure conduct of a Bodhisattva can cause even animals to develop the aspiration for enlightenment. If Vasumitra can accomplish such great deeds for the Buddha's work, how much more so can other Bodhisattvas, whose power and virtue are immeasurable.' Then, the gods, mountain spirits, earth spirits, and the eight classes of celestial beings, seeing that the monkeys had developed the Bodhi mind, and would be reborn in the heavens and attain non-retrogression, were filled with joy and asked the Buddha: 'When will these monkeys attain Buddhahood?' The Buddha told the assembly: 'After a million billion nayutas of asamkhya kalpas, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, in a kalpa named Great Light, they will attain Buddhahood. Eighty-four thousand Buddhas will appear in succession, all in the same kalpa, and all will be named Universal Golden Light King Tathagata, Arhat, Samyaksaṃbuddha, Vidyācaraṇasaṃpanna, Sugata, Lokavid, Anuttara, Puruṣadamyasārathi, Śāstā Devamanuṣyāṇāṃ, Buddha, Bhagavat.' The assembly at that time, hearing the World Honored One bestow predictions of Buddhahood upon the monkeys, immediately took off their most exquisite necklaces and offered them to the Tathagata and the Sangha of monks. They praised the immeasurable virtues of the World Honored One with one voice: 'The Tathagata appears in the world precisely for beings like these monkeys. Excellent, World Honored One! If monkeys, upon hearing the Dharma, can attain Buddhahood, how could we not attain Buddhahood in the future?' The assembly at that time, having heard what the Buddha said, joyfully accepted and practiced it, bowed in reverence, and withdrew.
